Darlene Sweeney-Newbern Takes the Helm at Toledo NAACP
After decades of advocacy, she’s still ready to fight discrimination and push
for equality
By Jeff Berry
Toledo native Darlene Sweeney-Newbern is fired up, as on January 1, she became the president of the Toledo chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Newbern brings years of experience to the role, with experience in fighting for marginalized people. “I [have been] discriminated against my entire life; while I couldn’t put it into perspective then, I could understand that there were differences back then. [Activism] is just something that’s in my blood,” Sweeney-Newbern explains.
Building a career and a reputation
After high school, Sweeney-Newbern attended college, focusing on computer programming. After graduation she worked as a public school teacher and an instructor at Stautzenberger College. At a Career Fair at the College, the trajectory of the young teacher's life was redirected. The Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) was participating in the Fair, looking for employees. “I learned that there was an agency out there that allowed you to have a voice and to fight for the people. I was ready,” SweeneyNewbern relates.
“People have to be educated...This is not a time for me to be conciliatory. This is a time to demand respect....”
-Darlene Sweeney-Newbern, President of the Toledo Chapter of the NAACP
The Toledo-born activist began with the OCRC as an investigator and rose through the ranks to eventually become second in command of regional operations. After 33 years with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission she retired. During her OCRC tenure Sweeney-Newbern also sat on the executive board of the Toledo NAACP as the legal redress chair, where she continued her advocacy for marginalized communities.
In 2017 Sweeney-Newbern led the OCRC’s investigation into racist activity at Toledo’s General Motors transmission plant after nooses were hung at work stations and “Whites Only” signs were found in restrooms. After a nine month investigation, the
commission made a finding that GM had allowed a racially hostile environment to exist. GM appealed the decision which was upheld.
According to Sweeney-Newbern, after that investigation, she received calls from across the nation seeking help in dealing with racial matters in the workplace, solidifying her reputation, locally and nationally, as a knowledgeable resource regarding civil rights violations in the workplace.
Continuing the ‘good fight’
As president of Toledo Chapter of the NAACP, Sweeney-Newbern continues to address workplace challenges — challenges she’s ready to meet head-on. She advises that, despite attempts to abolish Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, laws prohibiting discrimination in the hiring process are still in place and that educating people is a top priority for her in her role as president of the Toledo NAACP.
“People have to be educated...This is not a time for me to be conciliatory. This is a time to demand respect. This is the time to demand that all those promises of equality from so long ago are kept,” Sweeney-Newbern said, adding, “The NAACP was cofounded by both black and white (people), We’re trying to get everyone in the fight together...We are going to burst the bloated belly of bigotry here in Ohio, particularly in Toledo, and we are going to do this as one unit–with people from all races.”
With six siblings, Sweeney-Newbern grew up having to speak up when she had something to say. As president of the Toledo NAACP, her goal is to say it loud and proud for everyone to hear.
Monthly Toledo Chapter NAACP membership meetings take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 5pm at the African American Legacy Project 1326 Collingwood Blvd. https://www.naacptoledo.org/

Labyrinths have been a part of many cultures for years. Their designs vary but their purpose has remained the same. They offer the opportunity to create a personal focus for the walk. Some people choose to pray as they walk, or to focus on a particular word or phrase, while others center their attention on the sights and sounds of nature around them. This meditative experience may lead to new thoughts about a situation. Often the positive affects of the walk linger past the experience. The importance of old growth forests
Local forests provide up close examples
By Mary Rose Kulczak
Old growth forests are important to nature’s ecological balance. The trees in these forests provide nesting places for insects, reptiles and amphibians. They improve air quality and water quality while creating a rich topsoil for native plants, flowers and fungi.
Ohio is home to many old growth forests, some with trees dating to 300 years old. Northwest Ohio is home to four old growth forests, each with unique aspects to explore. The Old Growth Forest Network keeps detailed records of forests in Ohio and around the country, with descriptions of flora and fauna as well as directions to find each preserve.

ARE YOU AGE 70 OR OLDER AND NOT YET RECEIVING BENEFITS?
By Erin Thompson, Public Affairs Specialist, Toledo, OH
Retirement is not one-size-fits-all. It can mean different things to different people. Perhaps you have not applied for Social Security retirement benefits because you're still working or are delaying applying so you can get a higher benefit. If you’re age 70 or older, you should apply now for the benefits you’re owed. Your benefits will not increase if you continue to delay applying for them because you are 70 or older.
Did you know that you can receive benefits even if you still work? Your earnings can increase your monthly benefit amount – even after you start receiving benefits. Each year that you work, we check your earnings record. It’s possible your latest year of earnings is one of your highest 35 years. If so, we will automatically recalculate your benefit amount and pay you any increase due.
The best and easiest way to apply for your benefits is with a personal my Social Security account. You can create your free account at www.ssa. gov/myaccount. Once you create your account, you can get an estimate of how much you might receive each month based on when you want to start receiving benefits and then apply.
In your account, you can also:
• Learn about benefits for your spouse and family members.
• Manage your benefits once you start receiving them.
We’re here to help you to feel secure today and tomorrow and we invite you to learn more about applying for retirement benefits at www.ssa.gov/ apply. Please share this information with those who need it.
Call the toll-free number
In addition to using the website, you can call Social Security toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. All calls are treated confidentially. Specific questions can be answered from 8 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday. Information is provided by automated phone service 24 hours a day. Toledo

Retirement Benefits
I want to estimate my retirement benefit at several different ages. Is there a way to do that?
Answer:
Yes. If you have a personal my Social Security account, you can get an estimate of your personal retirement benefits and see the effects of different ages for when you might begin receiving retirement benefits. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, you can create one at www. ssa.gov/myaccount.
Survivors Benefits
My spouse died recently, and my neighbor said my children and I might be eligible for survivors benefits. Don’t I have to be retirement age to receive benefits?
Answer:
No. As a survivor, you can receive benefits at any age if you are caring for a child who is receiving Social Security benefits and who is under age 16. Your children are eligible for survivors benefits from Social Security up to age 19 if they are unmarried and attending elementary or secondary school full time. Keep in mind that you are still subject to the annual earnings limit if you are working. If you are not caring for minor children, you would need to wait until age 60 (age 50 if you have a disability) to collect survivors benefits. For more information about survivors benefits,
read our publication Survivors Benefits at www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN05-10084.pdf.
Medicare
I recently retired and am approaching the age when I can start receiving Medicare. What is the monthly premium for Medicare Part B?
Answer:
In 2025, the standard Medicare Part B premium for medical insurance is $185.00 per month. Some people with higher incomes must pay higher monthly premiums for their Medicare coverage. You can get details at www.medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800633-4227) (TTY 1-877-486-2048).

Hard to Swallow Preventing “Granny’s Purse Syndrome”
Prescription medication use among older Americans continues to rise. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 7 in 10 adults ages 40-79 use at least one prescription, with 1 in 5 taking five or more. While essential for managing chronic conditions, these medications also pose significant risks to young children.
One alarming issue is “Granny’s Purse Syndrome,” where children access medications stored in a grandparent’s purse, pocket, or other accessible places. These incidents can quickly turn into medical emergencies. Accidental poisonings from medications are a leading cause of injury in children, with about 20% involving medications kept by grandparents. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), over 35,000 children under five visit emergency rooms annually due to unintentional medication overdoses, with 90% occurring when children ingest medicine unsupervised.
Changing Family Dynamics Increase Risks
Shifting family structures have heightened the risk of medication-related poisonings. With more parents working full-time, children increasingly spend time with their grandparents. The AARP reports that over 20% of children under 12 receive regular care from their grandparents. While beneficial, this arrangement also increases the likelihood of children encountering improperly stored medications.
Another contributing factor is the rise in multigenerational households. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 7.2% of U.S. family households included multiple generations in 2020, a number that has grown due to economic factors, cultural traditions, and caregiving needs. More medications in shared spaces mean a higher risk of accidental exposure.
Research shows that nearly half of all medication-related poisonings involve medications stored in childresistant packaging. While helpful, these containers are not foolproof, especially for seniors with arthritis or dexterity issues. Difficulty opening child-resistant lids may lead some
to transfer medications to easierto-access but less secure containers, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion.
Improving Safety with Better Packaging
Traditional child-resistant packaging often fails to balance security and accessibility for older adults. This gap can lead to unsafe storage habits. Recent innovations in medication packaging aim to improve safety without sacrificing ease of use. To make such solutions widespread, collaboration between pharmaceutical companies, regulatory agencies, and healthcare providers is crucial. Pharmacies play a key role in promoting safer packaging options to reduce accidental poisonings while ensuring accessibility for seniors.
Practical Tips to Prevent “Granny’s Purse Syndrome”
While innovative packaging is promising, proactive measures remain essential. Here are some key tips:
Store Medications Securely: Keep all medicines, both prescription and over-the-counter, out of reach and sight of children.
Use Proper Packaging: Avoid transferring pills to non-child-resistant containers.
Educate Caregivers: Ensure grandparents and other caregivers understand the risks and safe storage practices.
Check the Environment: Be mindful of where purses, bags, and jackets containing medications are placed in homes with young children.
Preventing medication-related accidents requires a collective effort from families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the pharmaceutical industry. Through safer storage, improved packaging, and better education, the risk of Granny’s Purse Syndrome can be significantly reduced, helping protect children while maintaining accessibility for those who depend on medications.
Dining out
Ed’s
Bar & BBQ
A roadhouse gem serving up smoky goodness
Daina and Ed’s cozy Monclova joint is famous for ribs, pulled pork, and homemade specials—don’t miss the garlic dip!
If you’re driving down Maumee Western Road in Monclova and catch a whiff of smoky, slow-cooked barbecue, chances are you’re near Ed’s Bar & BBQ. Sitting pretty at 10151 Maumee Western Rd, this old roadhouse-style joint has been a gathering place for good food, good folks, and a good time for years. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a warm, old-school atmosphere. To the right, there’s a wraparound bar where locals swap stories over cold beers, and to the left, a pool table sits ready for a friendly game. The place has a long history of being different restaurants—once known as Kaiser’s Restaurant and even a strip club called Poppy’s Pole Paradise—but these days, it’s all about the food and the folks who make it special.
The husband and wife duo
At the heart of Ed’s Bar & BBQ are Daiana (pronounced Dina) and Ed, the husband-and-wife duo who keep the place running. You’ll find them right in the thick of things—Ed greeting customers and keeping an eye on things, and Daiana popping in and out of the kitchen with a warm smile. Be sure and try her homemade garlic dip. (Trust us, once you try it, you’ll be hooked.)
The menu is stacked with barbecue classics that’ll have your mouth watering before you even take a bite. The rib dinners are a must, fall-offthe-bone tender and slathered in just the right amount of sauce. The pulled pork is another crowd favorite, smoky and juicy, perfect piled high on a sandwich or eaten straight off the plate. And if you stop in on a Thursday, don’t miss the BBQ chicken special—it’s a local tradition.
For those who prefer something different, Ed’s has plenty of options. The beef brisket sandwich is a go-to for hearty appetites, while the thin and crispy pizzas have their own loyal following. Not in the mood for barbecue? No problem. You can always grab a grilled cheese, a BLT, or Ed’s classic hamburger with a side of fries. And if you’re lucky, the daily special might just be beef and noodles, homemade the way comfort food should be.
The thing about Ed’s Bar & BBQ is that it’s more than just a restaurant—it’s a community. Regulars say it feels like home, with friendly service, no-frills charm, and food that never disappoints. One patron put it best: “The food is always delicious, servers are always attentive, and the family-feel vibe is so cozy!” Next time you’re craving real-deal barbecue and a laid-back atmosphere, swing by Ed’s Bar & BBQ. Whether you come for the ribs, the people, or just to shoot a round of pool, you’ll leave feeling like family.
