Eating disorders explained: Dentistry and eating disorders An eating disorder is a serious mental illness, characterised by an unhealthy preoccupation with eating, exercise, and body weight or shape. Eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice, a diet gone wrong or a cry for attention. Eating disorders can take many different forms and interfere with a person’s day-to-day life. It’s estimated that one million Australians have an eating disorder, and this number is increasing. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, and have a range of severe physical and psychological impacts. Dentists are often one of the first clinical professionals that someone with an eating disorder might have contact with. Dentists are among the best placed healthcare providers to be able to detect the potential presence of an eating disorder in their patients. It is vital that this first opportunity for medical response is treated with the appropriate approach, evidence-based advice and ongoing positive health outcomes at the fore.
