Every day, five people are diagnosed with oral cancer. Will one of your patients have to suffer like Connie? Read Connie’s story on page 14 of the Victorian Dentist.
Helping your dentist help you
Dear Colleague, I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Victorian Dentist, where oral cancer is examined from a number of perspectives. In my role as Chair of the eviDent Foundation, I invite you to consider how oral cancer affects you and your patients, and ask that you make a commitment to supporting eviDent’s research in this area. As dental professionals, we are well aware that oral cancer is the seventh most common cancer in Australia and we understand the dire consequences of failing to treat it in its early stages. Many of our patients, however, may be unaware that the incidence of this cancer is increasing, or that regular dental check-ups for early diagnosis and treatment are vital. The eviDent Foundation is working to increase public awareness of oral cancer and this Christmas we are asking for your help. In this issue of Victorian Dentist, you will read about one of my patients, Connie, and learn about her life-changing experience with oral cancer. I became involved with Connie’s postcancer rehabilitation a few years ago. Connie was diagnosed with floor of mouth sqamous cell carcinoma a number of years ago and has undergone extensive surgical treatment at the Royal Melbourne Hospital to manage the cancer. She is still affected by the devastating consequences of the disease. The eviDent Foundation has been conducting research into early diagnosis of oral cancer, and with your help, we hope to drastically reduce the high levels of morbidity and mortality from this disease. Today, Connie is doing well, but knows she is one of the lucky ones. She also acknowledges the work of the eviDent Foundation: ‘I know that eviDent is doing some amazing work aimed at oral cancers like mine. I hope that their research into early detection will mean that people won’t have to go through the same things that I did.’ Connie, 2019 In this issue, you will also read about the work of one of eviDent’s researchers, Professor Michael McCullough. Early diagnosis of oral cancer is fundamental to reducing the need for the extensive surgery Connie faced. As dental professionals, we have a unique role to play in this early diagnosis, and the eviDent Foundation is working with researchers, such as Professor McCullough, to develop tools to assist us in our practices. eviDent is the only dental practice-based research organisation in Australia; it’s real science, real time. Please make a donation or register to get involved in one of our many research projects.

pays for the consumables for one laboratory saliva analysis to confirm the relationship between salivary acetaldehyde production and oral cancer risk.
$49
pays a postdoctoral researcher for one hour to develop and successfully lab-test a rapid test to detect patients with, or at high risk of, oral cancer.
$250
provides training so practitioner researchers can test an oral cancer risk test to improve early detection rates and identify individuals at high risk of developing this disease.
You, as a dental professional, are in the best position to help your patients. Register your interest to participate in eviDent research projects at www.evident.org.au

President’s Message
2020 Lecture Program
Thank you to our members and friends for helping to make 2019 a very successful year for ANZSPD Victorian Branch. As we enter a new decade, we are very excited about our lecture program for 2020. This will commence with our Biennial Congress held in beautiful Hobart over the Labour Day weekend for Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Australian Capital Territory on 6th and 7th March. Our varied and interesting program will take us through all types of ‘management’ including patient, parent, staff, social media and self-management. Dr Greg Psaltis and his wife Mary Ellen are our keynote speakers from Washington, USA. They will give practical advice in a very entertaining manner. Greg and Mary Ellen will be joined by several local speakers from Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales. We will not only be hearing from paediatric dentists, but also lawyers, nutritionists and a psychologist. Join us for a complimentary yoga session on morning two as well as the Gala Dinner at fabulous MONA. It promises to be a terrific event. At our July dinner meeting, we are looking forward to hearing from Dr Helen Marchant, a specialist in special needs dentistry, about the management of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. These patients can be very challenging but are often treated in general dental practice. Helen’s advice will be helpful to all of us.
Dinner meeting, Thursday 30 July 2020 “Managing adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder”
Our year concludes in October with our Elsdon Storey Memorial Lecture and AGM where we will hear from prosthodontist Dr Kunal Pandya who will discuss the longterm management of first permanent molars that required the placement of stainless-steel crowns earlier in the child’s life. These patients will also be seen in general dental practice and therefore relevant to everyone.
Dr Helen Marchant, Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry
We hope you can join us for our fantastic events in 2020.
