Vanuatu Dental Volunteers Ever considered travelling to a tropical paradise and while you are there doing muchneeded dental work? If so, then there's a wonderful opportunity coming up later this year that’s not to be missed ! First, some background. Vanuatu has serious oral health problems. With a population of around 300,000 there are less than 10 dentists to go around. Compounding the problem is that the population is spread across 65 islands, 80% are rural and subsistence-based with little to no money to pay for care even if it was available. But why volunteer your dental skills in this particular year ? Well, the unique feature of this year’s undertaking is that along with providing oral health education and treatment (plus a broad range of other medical service) throughout the various islands the Vanuatu Dental Care Service and their partners will also be coordinating a National Oral Health Survey on behalf of the Vanuatu Ministry of Health. This is an extremely ambitious task that will survey around 1% of the population, (approximately 3,000 people) across five different age cohorts from 5-65, in both urban and rural communities, on more than 30 separate islands. Naturally, rigorous World Health Organisation’s (WHO) standards of statistical sampling will be employed, along with WHO’s data collecting and processing methodologies. Being the first survey of its type ever conducted in Vanuatu, the expectation is that this will lay the foundation for a future Vanuatu Oral Health Strategy; providing the evidence to then underpin the most appropriate allocation of scarce resources in this vital area. Again, this is a huge, privately funded undertaking. By getting involved, as a dentist, or dental assistant, you really will be part of something significant. The survey training will also entitle you to CPD points and tax deductibility. It might cost you in time and dollars but the returns, as they say, are priceless.

I think we volunteers take more away from the experience, in terms of enjoyment and satisfaction, than we really give. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience”
Barry (Dentist)
The survey will be conducted over 5 months starting in the south and working its way northward, finishing up in November. If you can spare 2-3 weeks of your valuable time later this year then we would love to hear from you. We really can guarantee an unforgettable experience.
