Tips and tricks for the general dentist Early Clinical Essentials BRIEF Direct anterior restorations play a key part in any modern restorative practice. Learn “why”, “when” and “how to” of predictably use direct composite resin to reconstruct anterior teeth from both an aesthetic and functional standpoint. Topics range from incisor hypomineralisation, masking a dark tooth to tried-and-true modalities for building invisible Class IV and composite veneer restorations. The critical role of Digital Smile Design in aesthetic treatment planning of large cases will be explained. Modern dentistry is ever-influenced by both economic factors and patient expectations. Learn how to artistically and reproducibly create direct composite overlays and Class II restorations using smart supercomposites. With outstanding physical and optical qualities, often only one shade is required to generate an invisible result. Ultimate aesthetics can easily be recreated in the final product with tints to make the expanded direct restoration blend seamlessly with the adjacent dentition. A review of how to reconstruct the occlusion will be emphasised with respect to the physical properties of composite; a concept particularly pertinent in larger restorations.

TOPICS • The nuts and bolts of direct anterior aesthetic restorations • Direct overlays simplified with respect to anatomy and occlusion featuring the universal composites and Essentia (GC Japan)

LEARNING OUTCOMES At the conclusion of this course,

Jointly brought to you by the CPD and the Recent Graduates & Students Committee

participants will be able to:

Understand predictable protocols to rebuild the primary, secondary and tertiary anatomy of anterior teeth via a direct approach

know where and when to use what composite material, based on optical qualities ranging from opalescence and fluorescence through to opacity

Confidently treat anterior teeth via both a digitally-driven approach and a freehand approach for practicality

know how to use specific bonding protocols for specific situations

know the finishing and polishing protocol with respect to texture and luster create a posterior putty stent to predictably rebuild line angles and cuspal anatomy in complex Class II situations

• •

avoid “white line fever” in posterior restorations

recreate accurate occlusal anatomy, with layering techniques focused on minimising C-Factor forces

carry out interlobe and superficial staining techniques

implement predictable protocols for finishing and polishing posterior restorations, and for minimising occlusal adjustment

PRESENTER Dr Clarence Tam (NZ) is well-published in both the local and international dental press, writing articles, reviewing and developing prototype products and techniques in clinical dentistry. She frequently lectures throughout New Zealand and Australia. Clarence is the Chairperson and Director of the New Zealand Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
