Eating disorders explained: Dentistry and eating disorders An eating disorder is a serious mental illness, characterised by an unhealthy preoccupation with eating, exercise, and body weight or shape. Eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice, a diet gone wrong or a cry for attention. Eating disorders can take many different forms and interfere with a person’s day-to-day life. It’s estimated that one million Australians have an eating disorder, and this number is increasing. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, and have a range of severe physical and psychological impacts. Dentists are often one of the first clinical professionals that someone with an eating disorder might have contact with. Dentists are among the best placed healthcare providers to be able to detect the potential presence of an eating disorder in their patients. It is vital that this first opportunity for medical response is treated with the appropriate approach, evidence-based advice and ongoing positive health outcomes at the fore. This three-hour presentation, held in conjunction with Eating Disorders Victoria (EDV), covers: • A 90-minute presentation that identifies: ○ Types of eating disorders ○ Risk factors ○ Warning signsw ○ Protective factors ○ How to approach someone you might be concerned about ○ Signs and complications specific to dentistry ○ EDV services and resources

• An EDV Stories of Recovery speaker who will share their lived experience of having an eating disorder and their journey to recovery • Time for questions and answers.

Suturing - Improving Clinical Outcomes in Practice "Build your expertise and accrue CPD credits through Melbourne Dental School’s highly-regarded CPD program, delivered by clinical experts using state-of-the-art equipment and technology"

This course aims to refresh and update your knowledge on suturing techniques in relation to commonly found clinical situations. Closing and stabilising wounds satisfactorily is the key to predictable surgical outcomes. Its importance in achieving consistent results is often underestimated. With alternative methods of wound closures such as strips, clips and glues, suturing remaining a cornerstone to success. Nearly all surgical procedures require the use of sutures. This half-day program combines hands-on exercises and lecture material to review the aim of treatment, the material available and methods for achieving adequate closure in general dental surgical procedures. The hands-on component provides practice and supervision in performing multiple suturing techniques.
