THE

Rewards ARE MANY. THE

Awards ARE FEW.

The 2015 WES TERN NEW YORK ADDY AWARDS

Many of us might share the same story. Sitting on our beds as children with rocket ships or stethoscopes and stuffed animals. Dreaming big dreams of changing the world. Instead, we work in advertising. It isn’t rocket science. Or medical science. Or science of any kind. At its best, it is art. At its worst, it is still a hell of a lot of fun. In the end, what we do and the people we do it with are the rewards for the long hours, the crazy clients and the fact that mom still drops hints that she wants you to be a doctor.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THIS

Yes, once a year, we get together and celebrate the best of what we do. But in reality, the best of us is on display every day in the young account executive, the crusty creative director, the wild-eyed interactive wunderkind and the work. Always the work.

Business

Not changing the world, but changing the perception of it. And that is reward enough.

Crazy OF OURS.

I’d like to recognize the people who contributed their time and work to make this year’s ADDY Awards Show a huge success. A big thank you first goes out to Kristen Cronyn. As this year’s Show Chair, she took on a difficult task that is normally a two-person effort. We all appreciate her great leadership skills, work ethic and dedication. Working closely with The Martin Group was a pleasure. For their time commitment and great creative work, we thank everyone on their staff— especially Sarah DiPofi and Christie Berardi. Thank you to Jason Yates, who was an integral part of Judging Weekend by recruiting judges and managing the judging process. Also, thank you to the Ad Club Board, who contributed in different ways. Lastly, congratulations to all of our Gold and Silver award winners as well as the incredibly talented individuals taking home Special Awards. Well deserved! Kristen Cronyn has spent most of her career in the world of Advertising at both Gelia and SKM Group, specializing in interactive project management. She recently made the transition over to the client side (aka dark side) where she manages mobile for employees and customers at M&T Bank. This is her second time chairing the show and she thanks everyone for their hard work in bringing this together. “Cheers to our winners, and to Bonnie’s lemon cookies.”

Special Awards Some are just more equal than others

ad club of buffalo special awards Osborn Award for Creativity Named in honor of Alex Osborn of Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn fame, this award recognizes individuals who, through outstanding creative achievements, have left an indelible mark on the Western New York creative community. A recipient does not have to be a member of the Ad Club or work primarily in the advertising arts. The key requirement is that the individual’s achievements have helped strengthen the local advertising, graphic arts and communication disciplines—as well as gained recognition outside our market.

Kathy Kastan Creative Director GELIA

ad club of buffalo special awards David I. Levy Communicator of the Year Award This award was created to recognize outstanding achievement and service in the communications industry. Nominees should have a distinguished record of achievement over an extended period of time, which includes contributions to his/her company, the industry and the community.

ad club of buffalo special awards Odysseus Award The Odysseus honors a client in the Western New York market with a record of implementing strategic marketing and advertising in an extraordinary way. A nominee can be an individual or group/department, from any business category (e.g., non-profit, retail, service, business-to-business, etc.) and does not have to be an Advertising Club of Buffalo member.

Tod Martin is the founder, President and Chief Creative Officer of The Martin Group. After graduating from the University at Buffalo with a BFA in communication design, Tod spent the early years of his career at several preeminent Buffalo marketing agencies. But he always had his eye on starting a premier creative firm of his own. In 2001, that became a reality with the formation of The Martin Group.

Kathy Glieco, vice president, marketing, at Independent Health and her team worked with Gelia to develop several attention-getting campaigns in 2014. Independent Health demonstrated how it helps to make health care easier for its members with a demonstrably high level of customer service.

It has been guided by two constants—Tod’s leadership and the belief that every client deserves the absolute best of professional expertise, personal attention and world-class creative. As a result, the last decade has seen TMG grow from a client roster that began with a single local bank to some of the most high profile brands in the country.

Branded as The RedShirt Treatment, this extraordinary dedication was brought to life via a light-hearted TV campaign. In the commercials, a RedShirt appears in everyday situations where someone can use a hand: opening a jar, moving a couch, fixing the copy machine and even assisting the Buffalo Bills.

Throughout it all, and in particular since starting The Martin Group, Tod has been a fierce advocate for Buffalo and has been a constant champion for the region, its businesses and its creative talent. His commitment extends to the community through charitable causes and boards of directors ranging from the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation to the BISON Fund to Canisius High School.

The icon of a red shirt is synonymous with the brand. Independent Health embraced the idea of putting that icon into the image commonly known as the “Bat Signal” to represent that whenever you need them, the RedShirts are there to help.

Tod’s has been a career of achievement and accolades including being cited as a top C-Level executive and having TMG named one of “Western New York’s Top Private Companies,” “Western New York’s Most Admired Companies” and the “Fast Track Companies of Western New York in 2014” by Buffalo Business First. But it is especially fitting that Tod wins this award this year, which saw The Martin Group taking up residence in their new downtown Buffalo home, the agency’s expansion into Rochester and the acquisition of Travers Collins, the firm where he served as Partner and Creative Director for more than six years. Tod has always been a communicator, from his art direction to his brand vision to his inexhaustible personal energy and style. Tonight, long in coming, we recognize his dedication and excellence.

Tod Martin President | Chief Creative Officer THE MARTIN GROUP

To reach its Medicare audience, Independent Health supported the concept of showing the RedShirts in a variety of exaggerated “training” scenarios as they prepare to assist their members. The TV spot includes real RedShirts doing their prep work – including running through an obstacle course of tires like a pro athlete would. Independent Health’s marketing group is strategic, yet flexible. Decisive, yet collaborative. And very respectful. Congratulations to Kathy Glieco and her team: Sean Rahill, Jill Bogdan, Kristin Van Dewater, Michael Coniglio, Lisa Russell, Nickole Jackson, Mary Dolloff, Jessica Zyglis, Bob Vacarella, Theresa Sprague, Amy Lucinski, Kelly Myers-Chunco, Kim Harris, Gina Owczarczak and Kara Cook. Gelia is proud to see them win this well deserved honor.

CROWLEY WEBB

Associate Creative Director GELIA

If you’ve gone to the ADDYs in the past few years, then you’ve probably seen my dumb face enough to know how much I’ve been involved with this show. Since 2010, I’ve co-chaired three times, worked on the creative twice and stuck my nose in planning on the off years. Seeing that on paper makes me realize I should have picked up a hobby. But it’s really not as much work as it sounds. There have always been a bunch of great people working to put this show together, so it’s (mostly) fun. I can’t name them all, but here are a few of them: Tricia, Scott, both Charlies, Kristen, Lauren, Cait, Bill, Amber, Devon, Alyssa and Tina. I owe a huge thanks to my wife, Jen, and daughter, Josie, for putting up with ADDY season every year. As well as Kastan and Paterson, for making Gelia the type of place that can participate and compete in the ADDYs. One of my favorite achievements, reformatting and shortening the award presentation, means that I’m not allowed to give a speech tonight. You’re welcome. Seriously, I am grateful for this honor. And also happy to enjoy this year’s show as a spectator. Don’t mess it up, Cronyn.

It would be pretty hard to work with Adina Pera and not love your job (or her). After two tours as a Crowley Webb intern, and now two years in as a full-time Assistant Account Executive, she has impressed the hell out of us – and her clients. After being offered a full-time gig (while simultaneously finishing her master’s in Integrated Marketing Communications), she jumped in headfirst as one-half of the account service team on a million-dollar industrial B2B account. (Talk about pressure!) Her talent and unfailing sense of accountability have turned her into a magnet for extra work from all corners of the agency, which she eagerly takes on. On top of a full roster of client work, she’s our go-to-gal for many pro bono projects and managing internal training and professional development initiatives. With current client experience that includes ESAB Welding and Cutting, the Association for Manufacturing Technology, HEALTHeLINK and a mile long list of pro bono accounts, Adina has never been anything less than thrilled with every opportunity to learn and grow. Plus, she’s nice. Like really nice. Luckily, the feeling is mutual. Adina believes the culture at Crowley Webb is something truly special. She’s fueled by the passion of her peers and loves seeing how the agency’s super-talented creative team brings good input to life. Adina’s a big Buffalo lover – dedicated to supporting small businesses and local restaurants and shopping in her Elmwood Village neighborhood. A self-described family gal, her Instagram account is mostly pictures of her two little “meatball” nephews. We can’t blame her – they are the cutest. There’s rarely a day when you won’t hear Adina respond at least once with her signature phrase: “It’s totally fine.” We’d have to disagree, though. With Adina on our team, things are more than fine – they’re excellent.

In the spirit of one of Buffalo’s true giants in the industry, this award recognizes not only hard work, but also outstanding achievement in furthering the activities and interests of the club. All past recipients have shown dedication, commitment and service to the club that went above and beyond the call of duty.

Honoring an outstanding young professional in the marketing and advertising field who has demonstrated great potential in his or her early years in the industry. The recipient must have five years or less experience in the marketing and advertising field (excluding internships or part-time employment while working on a degree) and have been an Advertising Club of Buffalo member for at least one year.

A new office in Washington, DC means more than Phillips Lytle being located in a vibrant hub for international and government activity. It means our attorneys are in close proximity to federal offices, agencies and trade associations. And it means they have direct access to high-profile contacts in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. It also means we’ve strengthened our roster with the addition of five seasoned attorneys who possess deep domestic and international connections, and will make an immediate, positive impact on our firm. All this means good things for our clients. This expansion instantly puts us in a position to better serve our clients, offering greater expertise, added depth and solid direction as we move forward. And that, in the end, is always our top priority. Meet our new Washington, DC attorneys.

More than 10 years ago, a group of payers and providers launched a project that has developed into HEALTHeLINK. Lack of patient information and antiquated communication systems among providers was a major contributor to an unsafe, costly, and inefficient health care system. Our goal was to have all relevant patient health data follow that patient in a secure way so that any provider anywhere, anytime, caring for the patient had full knowledge of past history, tests, and medications. To many outside of health care this seems like a given, but we all know how rare these circumstances are when we care for patients. Through truly unprecedented collaboration among health care professionals and New York State, we have set ourselves apart nationally as a community in making tremendous strides in accomplishing this task. The past few years have been dedicated to building the basic infrastructure of this system, increasing physician and hospital adoption and obtaining significant patient consent, all of which are critical factors in the ultimate success of HEALTHeLINK. We have already seen solid evidence of the positive impact on costs and patient care efficiency from studies of Western New York providers using HEALTHeLINK regularly. I use HEALTHeLINK daily in my Pathology practice and can say the positive impact on cost, efficiency, and quality of patient care exceeds what we even thought possible in the original founding group. We want to focus on working with providers to make the system more and more user-friendly and continually add to the ranks of consented patients through educational efforts and cooperative actions with our provider community. This effort will be every bit as difficult as the building of the basic infrastructure, but it is vital to the ultimate goal of transforming health care into an accountable industry. If we can maintain our vision and continue the spirit of collaboration as we have done to date, I am confident we will remain ahead of the rest of the country and create a model for health care reform. David Scamurra, MD Chair, HEALTHeLINK Board of Directors Pathologist, Eastern Great Lakes Pathology/X-Cell Laboratories of WNY
