EN RANCE THEM Back in the ‘80s, there was this wrestler named Iron Mike Sharpe. He was big, wore this black guard thing on his one forearm, and always had a scowl on his face. Anyway, I never saw the guy win one match. Or even give an interview. He didn’t have an entrance theme. When the wrestling program came back from commercial break, he’d just be in the ring awaiting his opponent. An opponent who would eventually – always – win. Iron Mike was one of those guys known as a “jobber,” a wrestler whose sole purpose is to make popular wrestlers look better. That’s it. Match in and match out, the guy was just

there to lose. To look mean, taunt the crowd, put up a bit of a fight, get pinned, and then walk away unceremoniously. No one ever cheered for Mike.

Ad Smack Battle Rumble Mania is now behind us. But what did it take to pull together a show of this caliber? We went straight to the source for the answer. Two sources actually! We sat down with show co-chairs turned rivals April Showers and Scarlett Marcia to get the dirt behind the smiles behind the dirty smiles.

Advertising Grappler Illustrated: So, tell us about the big show! You guys must be best pals now, right? Scarlett Marcia: I just knew this year would be the best show ever. April Showers: Please! This year’s show had a rocky start. My co-chair had no idea what she was doing! And then she goes and gets pregnant! Oh the drama!

SM: Are you serious? AS: Damn right! But in the end, it all came together. Because of yours truly, of course. AGI: Maybe we talk about something else? SM: You? Ha! It was my tag partners Big Pappa Lardo, Scooter B. Goode, T-Bomb Barrett and all of Crowley Webb who really crushed it. Like I said, BEST SHOW EVER!!! AS: Do you even believe this? AGI: No. No I don’t. I’m not asking another question until you two knock it off.

It was always about stories. Listening to them, reading them and finally making them. At first long stories – B-movies for Roger and Jean Corman, documentaries for Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Undersea worlds, sailing on Calypso, French divers, Mexico, the Saint Lawrence and the Amazonian jungle, alone for two months traveling up and down the Brazilian coast to Uruguay looking for and finding stories. I get my first screen credit. Next, 180 degrees later, rock & roll stories for MTV and VHI. Interviewing the E Street Band, Billy Idol and others. And only my hand on the microphone is visible on screen. I get my first manicure.

Then shorter stories . . . writing and producing promos for CBS comedies. Exposure to really, really good writers and very, very funny people. Monday morning writers’ meetings where I laughed my ass off and felt totally intimidated and fortunate to be

one of them. I would have paid CBS to work there. Then home. Buffalo. I get my first taste of advertising. Telling very, very short stories, but according to the same rules and with the same techniques. The fun of working with other creative brains – writers, art directors, visual directors, producers, camera people, lighting designers, set designers, musicians, sound FX editors – all of them artists and storytellers. All of them working incredibly hard and most of them thrilled to be doing it. I’ve been very lucky. I wouldn’t trade any of it. Not the difficult, funny and gratifying experiences I’ve had. Nor the gifted people with whom I’ve worked and from whom I’ve gratefully learned. Truth be told – and here’s why I’m really, really lucky – maybe 5 percent of it has felt like work.


DAVID I. LEVY COMMUNICATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Andy Donovan’s career in Buffalo spans more than three decades. He began as a still photographer working for the District Attorney’s office, capturing crime and accident scenes, prisoners and dead bodies in the morgue. Soon realizing this wasn’t the path he was hoping for, his hunt for another creative outlet led him to the world of film and video production. Early on, Andy made a living as a freelance cameraman working on films and corporate videos. For a brief period, he served as a TV news stringer for the BBC of England. While seeing many projects go from conception to completion, Andy found great reward in the finishing process which led him to his true love and niche as an editor. For 15 years, he worked as an editor and creative director for Avid Productions, and later as an editor for Sherwin-Greenberg Productions. In 2000, Andy opened Daily Post. Since that time, the then-postproduction-only shop has evolved into the full-service production companies dPost and dStudio. With little fanfare, the companies have expanded to over 12,000 square feet of casually chic space in the theatre district. This includes six edit/animation suites and two new production studios with the latest equipment and trendy amenities. Today, 13 full-time staff, joined by more than 150 freelancers annually, create impactful and breathtaking visuals that are garnering attention from regional and national clients. While Andy’s role has shifted from the editor’s chair to the president’s seat, he channels some of his creative energy to home and family. He and his wife Beth love to cook, entertain and renovate their old home. They also enjoy traveling with their teenage sons Sean and Liam, giving Andy time to take more photos . . . this time beautiful and memorable ones.

AWARD FOR SERVICE Joe Crowley

Thanks for choosing me for the only award that has nothing to do with talent, but merely showing up a lot. It’s like AAF’s Rudy award.

Having served as the Advertising Club’s president for Lawley Insurance two years BTC (Before Tall Charlie), I also spent six years on the board of directors and co-chaired the ADDY Awards twice. Thanks to a stellar and hardworking board, we established programming such as Ad Week, Uber Bowl, and The Big Tip Off, which became the largest fundraiser for student scholarships. We also came up with AdLab, which created a monthly continuing education and networking event. This award is as much recognition for the dozens of people who gave up their time to improve the insanely talented advertising community. I won’t name names to offend anyone I would undoubtedly leave out, but thank you to everyone who served to better the creative community in the past, currently and in the future.

FUTURE STAR AWARD

I’ll use the rest of my 300 word allotment as a volunteering PSA because no one cares about my work experience. EVERYONE here should care about a responsibility to give back. Yes, even you. Find your passion and help make it better. If that means serving on the AAF Buffalo board or giving up a Saturday to review a student’s portfolio, consider that your duty. How much would it have helped your career if someone mentored you years ago? If you are interested in animals, education or the elderly, Buffalo has hundreds of nonprofit organizations always looking for creative help. Pick a cause and go all in. Thank you to my beautiful wife for being so accommodating with all of the organizations I had no problem saying yes to helping. She helped me learn to strategical say no once in a while, but always gave me the time to volunteer. Now more than ever, you have a responsibility to make the world a better place. Think about what your passion is and find an outlet to help someone else. I guarantee you’ll get more out of it than them.

Sam Tato wasn’t just one of those interns that excelled at a skill and was destined to stand out among his peers. Sam was a rare find, one who clearly had an innate and extraordinary talent that was far beyond any expectation for a 3D animator. Everyone at dPost knew they had to lock him into a full-time position the day he graduated before Pixar discovered him. Sam is a brilliant animator who creates visual masterpieces. He has dedicated countless hours to honing the precision needed to execute his craft, specifically in the areas of modeling, lighting, texturing and virtual cinematography. Sam has the unique ability to visualize 3D in a theatrical way, just as a real-life image would be seen through a camera lens, which has made him masterful in photorealistic animation.

In early 2013, the dPost team brought on an intern per the regular course of business. Never did the team imagine that this kind, genuine and playful young student would be foundational in launching a new creative arm for dPost. Page 5 / AAF Buffalo / Ad Smack Battle Rumble Mania 2017

That said, Sam could easily coast through his career, but he’s not wired that way. He has an unquenchable thirst to learn, always pushing hard to advance his skills in order to elevate every project and raise the bar for the next. While all this sounds lofty, aka budget-breaker, Sam has a keen and realistic approach to client projects. He is able to mix things up and think outside the box, yet in ways that are practical and attainable, aka budget-friendly. Whether at work or home, Sam strives to enjoy life. When away from all the fun at dPost, Sam is hanging out with his fiancé Jill planning their wedding.


THE

ODYSSEUS AWARD When Greek immigrant Theodoros Spiro Liaros arrived in America in 1912, his pockets were empty and he didn’t speak a word of English. He worked hard launching a variety of business ventures, including a horse-drawn cart that he operated, selling popcorn and peanuts on Buffalo’s West Side at the foot of the new Peace Bridge. In 1927, when bridge construction was completed, Ted bought the tiny tool shed that had been used to store the bridge builders’ tools—Ted’s Hot Dogs was born. Ninety years later, Ted’s remains a Western New York (and Tempe, AZ) staple, famous for all manner of charcoal-broiled awesome. And while it would be easy for the team at Tedquarters to simply live off brand loyalty, they continue to build on family traditions and evolve the Ted’s experience.

This was back in the ‘40s when wrestling was still trying to gain traction among sane people. The match pitted Backwoods Davey Buck v. G-Force Meadows. In a cage, inside a larger cage, inside a fake barn the promoters had constructed in the arena. We all had to fight to watch through one of three small windows. That always puzzled me. Why the barn? That didn’t stop Buck and Meadows. They went at it for three days straight until they both just collapsed. Most of the people had gone home by then. Except me, a few security guards, and some lady who wasn’t even watching the match. She just sat there talking to a bag. Anyway, when Buck’s hand was raised in victory (Meadows forfeited because he had to get back to his job on the docks), I knew this business was for me. As sites are such an important piece of the recruitment puzzle, we work hard to keep research site staff motivated throughout. And we make sure they have the tools they need to do the same for patients. Retention is key, and we’ve found that study-branded items such as monthly newsletters with healthy tips and more, coloring books for kids, and waiting-room iPads help keep patients engaged and energized throughout a program. Showing constant appreciation to all involved is just a given.

The key to success on our side? The site relations specialists at Praxis form strong relationships with study coordinators at sites, constantly communicating on the outcomes of each referral. They assist in conducting effective local outreach. They even coordinate the implementation of our PraxisGo app that assists sites even further.

Strategically held one week after the popular Nathan’s Hot Dog competition at the Taste of Buffalo – the nation’s largest two-day food festival with over 450,000 attendees – Kale Yeah became the world’s healthiest eating competition. We brought in the Major League Eating organization to make it an official, sanctioned event that drew in professional eaters.

We coordinated all public relations, social media and traditional marketing efforts; developing the name, logo, tagline, t-shirt, shareable social content, media relations materials and supporting imagery before the event. We also filmed it on Facebook Live and Twitter’s Periscope in addition to developing a wrap-up video. As soon as the hot dog competition ended, Kale Yeah was everywhere, becoming the perfect mix of irony and shock value to reinvigorate healthier eating discussions around the world. The event was featured on almost every major news outlet, including Good Morning America, Mashable, NPR and even on Fox News’ the O’Reilly Factor. All in all, Kale Yeah generated over 800 articles, with a combined reach of nearly one billion people. Plus thousands of spectators witnessed the spectacle in person.

Hi I’m Isvel, I’m currently leading all creative efforts at blacQube in Atlanta for a range of clients from fast cars to yogurt. Prior to that I was with TBWA Global and 22Squared in Atlanta, where I was instrumental in the agency’s business development as well as created innovative work for Adidas, Nissan, MTV, Renault, Toyota and Coca Cola.
