EDITOR’S NOTE The Gratitude Project Hi F readers, This issue has been tagged as the “Gratitude Project”. Gratitude would be a word that deserves a million likes for our 2nd issue, a word I might overly use to give thanks for the people who made this issue possible! To Al, who has been my pillar of strength, my inspiration, my No. 1 supporter and staunch critic - my sincerest thanks, to our kids, who has been there to add zest and energy while I was doing a lot of paper works. To my Vibrant Team who have always been helpful, energetic - despite the busy schedule and on the run to deliver everything for the love of “F”. As you read through these pages, try to let yourself fall into beautiful discoveries, around 122 pages of things that are beautiful in various forms, that can either be a great source of pleasure and inspiration. This issue made me outgrow my limitations, although there are things beyond my control but there will always be people who would want to help expecting nothing in return. Yes at this age and time, people will still help no matter what. I guess that is the most beautiful discovery I had the privileged of knowing for on this issue. Enjoy reading!

Maricaban Island Diving Resort:
Exploring MARICABAN’S Secret Dive Spots By Riza Olaguer
T
. he winds were gusty, the waves persistently strong and the sea, you’ll notice as you get off the boat, is crystal clear. The shore is not sandy, but covered with coral remnants and beach pebbles, a mix of ash white, ivory and grey, enticing one to take them home as souvenirs. Our boat had docked right in front of Maricaban Island Diving Resort, its bamboo gate entrance a good 5-second sprint from the water’s edge. Welcome to Mabini Island’s one and only commercial rest house. Maricaban is a 2-hour drive from Manila to the port in Anilao, Batangas and a 40-minute boat ride from the port. It lies south of Mabini Peninsula.
An Underexplored World We always associate beach destinations with Boracay and its powdery sand, or Calaguas Island with its pristine version of white beach wanderlust. However, what often comes to mind
30
with mention of Batangas are grey or rocky beaches, acceptable for over-the-weekend trips for those who cannot take a full week’s leave for Bora. But this is not so for local scuba divers well acquainted with this humble province’s best kept secrets found both above, but mostly, under water. The deep waters of Batangas is a treasure trove for world-class divers and photographers. Maricaban Island is surrounded by more than a dozen diving sites, each with something unique to offer. Some diving spots have mild currents that are friendly to first time explorers, while others with strong currents are reserved for experienced divers. Maricaban Island Diving Resort owner and our trip’s host is Josie Evans, a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Certified Open Water Diver since 1996. She tells us of her discoveries in Maricaban’s underwater gardens “there are a lot of beautiful spots but I have some secret spots that only I and perhaps a few other divers here know of. Some really special spots are difficult to find unless you know the area like the back

Maricaban Sunrise - photo captured from the beachfront of Maricaban Island Diving Resort of your hand.” Josie has been guiding old and new divers alike in discovering Maricaban’s rich diverse marine life.
Divulging Maricaban’s Secrets The coast of Maricaban is filled with marine life. It is within the Verde Island Passage where more than 90% of the coral species all over the planet and an overwhelming number of species of shrimp and nudibranch (soft-bodied mollusks popularly known for their extraordinary colors and interesting forms) are found. Early in the afternoon, we headed to the famous Bonito Island dive spot, which is two minutes by boat. According to some, Bonito is a “diver’s paradise” adorned with both beauty and rarity. It is a vibrant marine sanctuary filled with coral heads and a diversity of swimming creatures like “shoals of jacks, snappers, fusiliers, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, stingrays and moray eels.”
Discover Scuba Diving When we reached the Bonito dive spot, currents were too strong so we moved to another spot close by. We had a “Discover Scuba Diving” experience, a 15 to 20 minute dip for non-divers who want to see the underwater world but are not ready for diving lessons. Before plunging into the water, Josie gave us some diving basics – how to breath, how to release pressure from the ears, how to release water from the mask and how not to get in trouble. The rest of the dive, of course, was for us to enjoy. Two of Josie’s sons came with us with their friends. Her son who is only 11 is a diver. Under PADI, the minimum age for diving lessons is 10 years old. The sea bed was 6 to 7 meters below us. (We went for shallow waters since we were all beginners). We didn’t chance upon any sea urchin but we did see Nemo (clownfish) and a lot of far more colorful fishes, and corals of different colors and shapes.

Other Nearby Diving Spots Batangas boasts of several other diving spots. There is, of course, Maricaban Island known to have grassy coral gardens, amazing dropoffs, caves, overhangs, shipwrecks and other diver secrets like in Bonito Island. The Cathedral, also called the Cathedral Marine Park Sanctuary, has become popular internationally. The waters here explode with throngs of various fish species. Here you can feed schools of fish and find colorful feather stars, soft corals, sea squirts and more. Not to be missed is Mapating Rock, a reef explored by more experienced divers for shark sightings. Other dive spots include Ligpo Island, Malajibomaoc, Mainit Point, The Koala, Beatrice Rock and Secret Bay.
Underwater divers.
A Date With Island Life Maricaban Island Diving Resort started operations in 1998 but Josie has been bringing diving enthusiasts, mostly foreigners, to Maricaban since 1996 through her affiliation with an older resort on a nearby island. Because of her passion to explore, preserve and boast of the Philippine’s underwater sanctuaries and marine life, she eventually started her own resort business. Josie’s resort provides simple, down-to-earth, clean and comfortable accommodations for guests looking to be refreshed with Maricaban’s laid back, island life. According to Josie “foreign guests prefer not to use air conditioning, they want a close-to-nature experience of basic island life and that’s what they come here for.” Maricaban Island Diving Resort can accommodate 20 to 30 guests with its 10 double room en suit with bathroom. All rooms have a window with a view of the sea and the sunrise. It is perfect for family excursions, barkada getaways, office team building activities and romantic weekends.
From kayaking with friends or team building, he island has a lot to offer.
Asked what else her guests love about the resort, she says, “they love the food.” Josie serves generous Filipino buffet breakfast, lunch, merienda and dinner, something her foreign guests appreciate a lot. There is also Italian and American food that is served depending on what her guests prefer.
An Addicting Island Recluse Maricaban’s laid back isle is serene, simple and seductive to anyone who wants to get away from the fast-paced city, or from the more stereotype beach resorts. And when you explore its deep waters and its extravagantly rich, enchanting marine life, you get nothing less than an experience of a totally different world. Refresh your
Lifestyle Ms. Moleen del Rosario, the woman who vows to give us a refreshing lifestyle, away from the usual, above the ordinary! By Dynes Regner
Let’s hear another “David and Goliath” story as Ms. Moleen del Rosario, President of Fisher Department Store shares her reasons on bravely competing with big names in retail stores. In her shy but beautiful smile, she confides that “everyones nightmare, when it comes to creating a fashionable lifestyle, is being a copy cat. You do not want to go to a party wearing the same clothes as the one you saw at the lobby.” I want to change that. I really think its about time to “Refresh your Lifestyle.” With that in mind, I guess I’m ready to take the challenge. She wants shoppers to be treated with a unique kind of shopping experience. “ I want Fisher Department Store to be an exciting place where they can find anything under the sun, as what our tagline says “Find it all here.” Beaming with excitement, she said “our store have an area exclusive for business transactions, currency exchange, bill payments, courier and travel agency. You can book a flight while doing the grocery or shopping. This can make every shoppers time well spent.” She and her husband, Roberto Simeon “Bobby” del Rosario, decided to venture into creating a Department Store with a distinct concept of integrating on-line retail products to be available, as well as, items which are exclusive only at the Department Store. Something she is proud to say none of the competing stores are doing. Ms. Moleen del Rosario vows to give her customers a refreshing lifestyle, “We want everyone to enjoy the kind of things that rich people enjoy. We want to veer away from the usual but be more than your ordinary store.” What you can expect from Fisher Department Store are value for money, more shopping choices and great customer experience. The store offers a wide selection of brand names that will surely interest the most niche crowd to the budget conscious shoppers.

Fisher Department Store, which houses four floors of the eight-floor Fisher Mall, advocates the message, “Find it all here.” It has something for everyone, from kids to adults, from fashion to home accessories, furniture to compliment your home and office. Every visit will give you a feeling of a “Refreshed lifestyle.” She mentioned all the house brands in Fisher Dept. Store that includes Felicity, Sway, Disguise, Flaunt, Roberto, Cotton Colony, Sabio, Simon and Juliana, Fisher Basics and Tradisyon which caters to every shoppers distinct taste. Ms. Moleen said, “when you’re wearing our brand, there is a slim chance that you will see the same thing on others because we don’t buy on volumes and that is one fact that is very valuable to all shoppers.” She invites everyone to experience the difference at Fisher Department Store, “Visit us and you can be sure you will FIND IT ALL HERE”, she ends the conversation with her captivating but humble smile.

Chef Judith and Chami... A Marriage Made in the Kitchen
By Dr. Christine P. Aranilla
H
ow is it like to wake up and sleep with the smell of garlic, onion and soy sauce being sautéed with meat, vegetables and miki, a local noodle on a daily basis. Chef Judith Serrano-Reyes grew up with that savoring smell of good cooking from the kitchen of the then famous “The City Rendezvous”, which was owned and managed by Chef Judith’s parents, Apolinario and Angelina Serrano. At “The City Rendezvous”, the house cook used tito or pig’s stomach as the meat ingredient that made it even tastier and became the best seller and sought-after among its patrons.
Dubbed as Chami Festival, various contests involving Chami are held such as the Chami Cooking Contest which is open to all cooks, household or professional, with the primary aim of rounding off the best Chami dish, prepared with miki as the main ingredient.
So whats the fuss about? Chami is a pansit (noodle) variety, made famous as a local delicacy of Lucena City.
In 2009, Chef Judith garnered the Grand Prize in the same contest with her version of Laksa, a favorite iconic street food in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. A frequent traveler of Singapore, Chef Judith was inspired to dig in into that spicy concoction of a real hawker’s Asam Laksa and use miki, instead of the yellow noodles or the vermicelli, for another Chami recipe with a twist.
The uniqueness of the recipe is actually in the noodle, called Miki when uncooked. It has distinctively no preservative, hence no offensive odor or acrid after-taste. Tradition has evolved throughout the years that this once hand-pulled noodle of flour, egg and water mixture is now an industrialized venture, but the quality and freshness remain. Chef Judith’s love for her hometown, anything and everything Quezonian including Chami, stirred her to make use of Chami’s main ingredient, miki, and transform the traditional way of how it is being prepared into something Asian, giving Chami a new preparation, presentation and taste. During town fiesta month of May, the City Government of Lucena hold an Annual Chami Festival as part of the festivities in honor of Chami that brought pride and fame to this gastronomic society.
54
In the 2008 Chami Festival, Chef Judith won third place with her version of Pad Thai. With miki replacing rice noodles, this Thai street food tasted delicious with a twist from the usual sticky texture of rice noodles to the new bolder and firmer feel of bigger flat noodles.
The following year, Chef Judith went home with a third place trophy. She presented the Vietnamese Roll, using miki instead of the vermicelli. Her winning Chami Spring Roll was a mixture of sautéed noodle, crab meat, shrimp and squid wrapped in a special rice wrapper. She concocted her own dip of finely chopped fresh garlic, chili-garlic sauce, lime juice, sugar and fish sauce. With all these winnings, she was made known to revolutionized Chami dishes into re-inventing and discovering the much potential of Chami and or miki.

BODY SHOTS

Winners Reinvent their Way to the Top By Delby Bragais
B
odyshots, the longest running and most awaited Model Search competition in the country, once again scored a big hit in the fashion and modeling scene!
The successful Finals Night of Bodyshots 2014, held June 28 at the Grand Ballroom of the Solaire Resorts & Casino, proclaimed Bodyshots contestants Vina Openiano and Christopher “Sin” Matecki as the winners in the model search competition. Bodyshots, founded by the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines (FDAP), has gained a reputation as an important launch pad for many of the bodies and faces gracing local and international runways, glossy magazines, television and the silver screen. Among the Bodyshots winners and finalists who have reached the pinnacle of success and carved out a name for themselves are top models Joan Bitangcol and Lucia Santiago, newscasters Rhea Santos and Rod Nepomoceno, actors John Estrada, Wilma Doesnt, Ricardo Cepeda, Francine Prieto, Zanjoe Marudo, Emilio Garcia and Lawren Novero, beauty titlist Lorna Legaspi and Maricar Balagtas, and ABS CBN’s Lawrence Dyogi.
For Bodyshots 2014, Vina and Sin bested a total of about 500 aspiring male and female models through two elimination rounds designed to select the top candidates destined to get a crack at the plum prize during the Finals Night. Richard Papa, Vice President of the FDAP and Co-Chair for Bodyshots 2014 together with Johnny Abad, shares that neither winner came into the modeling competition as a favorite, their wins were delightfully unexpected. The Finals Night was a spectacle to behold and featured a Grand Fashion Show directed by Cata Figueroa Jr. showcasing creations by the FDAP and modeled by the chosen finalists. For this special night FDAP designers created stylish outfits with fashion stalwart Danilo Franco heading the design direction and wardrobe committee. Sought-after hair and makeup expert Jinky Ilusorio and his creative team were backstage to weave their magic on the finalists. On that fateful night, against a backdrop of forty sculpted bodies, mesmerizing faces, and a lot of attitude on the runway, the stars of Vina and Sin did shine the brightest!

Meet:
Vina Openiano A veteran of several beauty pageants, Vina won Best in Swimsuit in the 2013 Mutya ng Pilipinas Beauty Pageant, and joined the Ms. World Philippines Beauty Pageant that same year. Undaunted by her failure to bag the plum prize in either pageant, she decided to try her luck once more, this time in the field of modeling.
Designer: Oscar Peralta Shoes by Tal de Guzman
Vina shared her story during the finals night as she was preparing to leave for the competition. Before showering that fateful morning, she said a little heartfelt prayer playfully reminding God that her birthday was coming up soon. She believes winning the Bodyshots Model Search competition was her advance birthday gift from God!. Coming into the competition, Vina’s greatest challenge was managing her time and health amidst the demands of a full time job which sometimes required her to work till 2am while attending Bodyshots activities. Towards the end, her body gave up on her and she got sick. It was a blessing that she was able to quickly recover and bounce back in tip top form, ready for the competition. From this experience, Vina advises aspiring models to consider first the requirements of joining this competition, and its possible effects on ones studies or job before taking the plunge. “Think positive and have faith in God” says Vina. Director Cata Figueroa Jr., who had the opportunity to become better acquainted with the candidates through all the rounds of preparation workshops and qualifying events, describes Vina as very attentive, highly engaged, and quiet. She would keep to herself, and interact with the others in a subdued, controlled manner. Chatting with Director Cata about Vina after her win conjured images of a quiet, focused personality who has a strong sense of purpose. Losing in previous national beauty pageants and making a go of it in the modeling world shows bold ambition, tenacity, and perseverance in pursuit of her dream. Blessed with the gift of height at 5’9” tall, coupled with a lithe and toned body, I believe she has what it takes, both inside and out, to take her to the top of the modeling world.

Meet:
Christopher Matecki “Sin”, as he is fondly called by friends, is an “accidental” contestant. While visiting relatives in the Philippines for the first time, a cousin took him to a fashion event. It turned out to be a Bodyshots elimination round for aspiring models!. Armed with an optimistic “I-have-nothing-tolose” attitude, he quickly dove in and immersed himself in a brand new world, far from his native Australia.
Designer: Kaye Morales
My interesting “behind-the-scenes” conversation with Director Cata paints an inspiring portrait of reinvention. He shares that the first time he saw Sin during the elimination rounds, he failed the first-impression test for the high standards of the Director due to his rather casual, shabby and unkept appearance. As a certified image consultant and fashion designer, I knew exactly what he meant as I would usually emphasize that first impressions are very important and once formed, are lasting. Thus, it was surprising for the noted Director to see the wanna-be model slowly change in front of his eyes! Through the activities leading to the Finals Night, he noticed Sin’s physique showing better tone and sporting a smaller waistline. With his newly styled hair, stylish clothes, and immersion in grooming and modeling workshops, the aspiring newbie eventually got the nod of the Director as one of the candidates to watch out for. True enough, Sin shared that it was during the competition that he experienced his first ever professional hair cut! He has been cutting his hair ever since he can remember and if all else fails he simply shaves it all off, no worries. His greatest challenge was improving his physique and weight amid the delicious Filipino cuisine not readily available in Australia. It took a lot of self-discipline and commitment to stick to a nutritious diet and regular gym workouts to give him an edge over the cut throat competition in the male model category. With no training, background, nor preparation for a model search competition, I believe it was his positive attitude, commitment and cool-headed disposition that proved to be his greatest assets coming into the competition. “Win, lose, no worries is the way I look at it. It’s already an accomplishment being here...” In retrospect, FDAP President Edgar San Diego shared with me that for the Finals Night, it was a wise decision to have a back up of 5 aspirants for the ladies and 5 for the men. Sin, who eventually won the Male model category, was a back up candidate... a dark horse who has reinvented himself all the way to the top.

It is very important for anyone at any age to be healthy. That is why I strongly encourage people to take care of themselves and for women to stay fabulous regardless of their status in life.

IT & FAB STEM CELL THERAPY:
Hype or Hope? By: Dr. Risa Caldoza-De Leon
“Similia Similibus Curantur” (Like Cures Like) - Paracelsus, 16th century. When prominent political and entertainment personalities proudly touted they have undergone stem cell therapy in Europe, the “secret” was revealed. The fountain of youth is now a reality. Stem cells are specialized cells that give rise to more specialized cells or differentiate into a specific cell type. They can self-renew by going through a number of cycles of cell division while maintaining its undifferentiated state. They are the body’s great ally for selfrepair. When a disease or injury happens, stem cells respond to certain signals and start about the healing process by becoming specialized cells required for the body’s repair, as long as they exist in adequate amounts and receive the correct healing signals. When they do not, the result is compromised healing. As we age, stem cell numbers dive, or malfunction, thus, the inevitable diseases of ageing. Stem cells coming from the patient are called autologous, those coming from genetically different donors of the same species (parents, siblings, children, or an unrelated match) are allogenic, while those from different species such as rabbits and sheep are xenogenic.
The Swiss Way Dr. Paul Niehans in the 1930s proposed that prescribing healthy and bioactive cellular materials for the specific disease of a patient will rebuild or revitalize ageing or diseased organs of the same tissue type. This foundation gave birth to cellular therapy. Swiss cellular therapy is a natural rejuvenation method that originated from Switzerland to effect against ageing and chronic diseases. It is simply administering cellular materials from fetal tissues into the human body for therapeutic purposes. These cellular materials, from placenta and organ-specific extracts, may be in the form of oral capsules, topicals, intradermal injectables, and intramuscular injectables. They are obtained from fetal organs and tissues of rabbits and/or sheep from closed colony of animals for more than 40 generations as per requirements of global regulating bodies such as the U.S. Federal Drug Administration, and World Health Organization. These animals are bred in pollution free environment under controlled dietetic organic conditions.
88
Stem cells are injected intramuscularly into the patient’s buttocks. Months after the treatment, patients notice youth-inducing effects such as glowing skin, higher energy levels, reduced symptoms of diseases, and even longevity. Different stem cells are given depending on the particular organ targeted. Intradermal (under the skin) injections are done on the face and neck to promote collagen and elastin production to regenerate skin, making it firmer and smoother. Even children afflicted with autism and Down’s syndrome are said to benefit from stem cells by enhancing the brain’s metabolism, which leads to better cognitive functions. It boosts brain development and the body’s immune system. Treatment cost ranges from P20,000 to P1.5 million and done as outpatient basis.
To each his own Fresh adult stem cells may be harvested from one’s own bone marrow, umbilical cord, blood or fat. There is no risk of rejection since it’s taken from the same patient. Autologous fat stem-cell therapy is used for aesthetic and/or medical reasons such as diabetes, blood disorders and heart problems. Fat from the patient’s tummy is harvested through aspiration and processed in a machine. The resulting fresh stem cell is then injected into the patient. Once injected, these stem cells replace and regenerate old and malfunctioning cells to stimulate growth and function of organs in the body. The procedure costs around P500,000 to P2.5 million. Stem cell therapy is not the standard of care and is considered an investigative procedure for compassionate use. They are still continuously being clinically evaluated and patients should be fully aware of its limitations. Dr. Risa Caldoza-De Leon, a Clinical and Aesthetic Skin Care Specialist, is a diplomate of the Philippine Skin Healthy Physicians, Inc. and diplomate of Philippine Academy of Aesthetic and Age Management Inc. She trained in the Use of Swiss Live Cell Therapies, Precursor Stem Cell and Peptides in Switzerland, and a member of the Philippine Stem Cell Society. She holds clinics at Vanity Skin Aesthetics in One Ecom, Mall of Asia (846-9988), Alabang Hills (823-1188), Binan, Laguna, and Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

ELEBRATING its 30th year anniversary in 2016, Body Shots, undeniably, is the longest-running model search in the country today, and is highly credited for discovering and training more than 500 professional male and female models in the fashion industry. Since its initial presentation in 1986, Body Shots has served as the stepping stone for most of our top models, beauty queens, and entertainment celebrities. And it is interesting to note that from the “on-and-off” staging of the competition by its founder, the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines (FDAP), one batch emerges quite remarkably through the decades: Body Shots 1988. The designer Lito Perez, who chaired the organizing committee that year, recalls that the formal affair was held at the posh ballroom of the Philippine Plaza Hotel with no less than the president of the Society of Designing Arts of Singapore, Allan Kho, and the merchandising head of Metro Singapore, Betty Heng, sitting in the panel of judges. The fashion VIPs from Singapore were visibly impressed by the FDAP’s professional handling of the event which led to the group’s participation in the annual Asean Fashion Connections in Singapore where Filipino designers excelled tremendously both in the design competition and in the fashion gala exhibition. Batch 1988, according to current FDAP president Edgar San Diego, is exceptional because quite a number of its finalists, aside from the male and female winners, have become successful in the fashion arena.
FERdie Villanueva
The finalist , fondly called Pido by his friends and colleagues, parlayed his fresh, boy-next-door looks into a commercial modelling career while he invested heavily on his hobby-cum-occupation: growing ornamental plants and beautifying gardens. Today, his company, Ambience by Pido, is sought-after for creating thematic atmosphere or ambiance for fashion and corporateevents, aside from grand weddings and debutante balls. Pido acts as the style master who puts together all the varied elements such as venue, décor, landscaping, lighting, music, fashion, food and entertainment into one dazzling spectacle. For instance, his special collaboration with fashion show director Robbie Carmona to launch Michael Cinco’s Impalpable perfume from the Bench Celebrity Scents was the talk of the town for weeks. Dolled-upmodels in white glittering, slinky haute couture gowns by Cinco sashayed on stage while gorgeous men in their beefiest splendour came out wearing only white Bench briefs to surprise and titillate the audience.
Edwin Uy
The six-footer modelled only for a year or so, and disappeared from the scene to seriously take up a computer programming course in System Technology Institute (STI) where he eventually became a computer programmer and an instructor. The call of fashion, however, once again beckoned and, this time, he blindly followed his heart, and ventured into creating avant-garde accessories made of wires which became an instant hit among the fashionistas. In 1996, Edwin opened his first atelier as a full-time fashion designer, a decision he never regretsdoing in his life. He is fortunate to have dressed up the top four singing divas of our time – Kuh Ledesma, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Regine Velasquez, and Pops Fernandez – for their highly-acclaimed concerts here and abroad. He has also designed numerous national costumes worn in major beauty pageants, with the most recent ones winning the first and second prizes for Best National Costume, notably in Miss Asia Pacific World 2014, Miss Bikini Philippines 2014, Miss Earth 2013 & 2012, and Mutya ng Pilipinas 2011.
All of these exciting numbers were unfolding against Pido’s breath-taking, all-white, fantasy garden which displayed a fanciful tree with luxurious leaves in ostrich feathers. FMAGAZINE

Romano Navasero
In Malaysia, was adjudged the Asean Model Search champion and, a few years later, he was selected to represent the Philippines in the Mannequin International modelling contest held in Belgium. From the start, he was singled out as a heavy favourite by Europe’s most influential talent agents and fashion editors who made up the board of judges. Unfortunately, a serious gum infection (perhaps due to the extreme cold weather) gave him a swollen face during the final nightwhich ruined his chances of winning the grand prize. He eventually placed third among the more than 40 male and female finalists from around the world. Romano now lives quietly in the US, away from the flashes of the camera, and the blinding lights of the runway spotlights.
Randy Salvino,
on the other hand, left with his family in 2002 for the United States with the hope of giving his children better options later in life. He is married to fellow model, Deedee Leoncio, and they have a daughter, Millicent, and son, Marcus. Randy admits it was, indeed, a difficult transition for him and Deedee – both coming from a life of glamour characterized by several gala shows, photo shoots, and TV commercials to leading a regular life as an office employee-dad and a stay-home mom. But, says Randy, he believes the “normal” set-up has produced good dividends in the end because their children are doing very well in school. He is quick to add, though, that their experiences earlier as models contributed immensely to their growth as individuals. “I would even go as far to say that modelling prepared us for our life as a couple and parents to our two beautiful children.” Randy currently works as a Senior Quality Engineer for an aerospace company that manufactures engine bolts for both military and commercial aircrafts. “You can say that in the beginning, at least, I was totally out of my elements – from making a quick buck by smiling for the cameras to creating work procedures that eventually warrant safety to human lives. It’s quite a big responsibility when you really think about it,” he explains.
Bong Regala, who received the Most
Having lived in the US for almost 12 years now, Randy and Deedee are proud to say that they have grown so much as a family. “Right now, our main focus in life is to instil into our children the value of God and family, the importance of education, and to excel in everything that they set out to do,” he notes. “We are still keeping the option of going back to the Philippines for the kids’ education, but as of this moment, it remains an option.”
Photogenic Award in 1988, has segued easily to television and movies as a character actor and, very aptly, to professional fashion photography. He is also a freelance event manager for corporate affairs, and the restaurant manager of Stoned Bar & Grill where his bubbly personality energizes the popular nightspot.

In an almost similar situation,
Gem Padilla-Thomas
, once an active model in the eighties and the nineties, has decided to lead a more sedate lifestyle abroad, focusing her efforts on her family, and her energy on her favourite sports – running. “I’m a housewife. I take care of my parents, and I do my sports. That’s about it,” she sums up her relatively simple interests right now. A fashion neophyte when she joined Body Shots, Gem surprised everyone when she emerged second best in the overall standing of the finalists. In 1990,she ably represented the country in the Miss Universe Pageant held in Los Angeles, USA. Gem has been married for four years now, but she has caught the running bug since 2007. She has done a number of full marathons from then on, and last year, she finished her first full Ironman distance in Taupo, New Zealand. The full Ironman distance is a longdistance triathlon race consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and a marathon 26.2-mile run, raced in that order and without a break. Given a strict time limit of only 17 hours to complete the race, the full Ironman distance is widely regarded as one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.
Lou Bunyi-Pareja,
meanwhile, has opted to stay in the dizzying world of fashion, but nowadays, she’s working behind the scene as a much in-demand make-up artist for big fashion show galas. Her individual clients seek her out at Emphasis Salon where she is based, while business companies enlist her services for make-up consultancy and image enhancement workshops. Her rise to modelling prominence quickly followed after Body Shots 1988 where she was named second runner-up. The next year, her exotic, dusky looks won for Lou the Look of the Year title that brought her to Paris for the international competition organized by the most prestigious modelling agency in the world, the Elite Agency. Upon her return, the Regal Film’s matriarch Lily Monteverde offered her a contract to join the Regal’s stable of “wet and wild babies. ” But after only one uneventful try as a character actress in the movie, “The Secrets of Pura,” an Alma Moreno headliner, Lou became more decided to stick to fashion for good. Lou is married to Body Shots 1993 winner James Pareja who now works in a garments company in the US, and they are blessed with four wonderful children.

Patty Betita
The ageless , who is as pretty as ever, has been the image model of Facial Care Center from 1996 to the present. She also serves as the brand ambassador of USANA health services, one of the leading brands in nutraceuticals. Her present preoccupation is the company she formed, the Thousand Oaks Personality Development & Talent Management, which regularly holds personality development workshops for kids and teens during summer, and corporate training programs for diverse companies the whole year round. The programs are specialized modules on Business & Social Etiquette, Visual Poise, Wardrobe, Skincare & Make-up, and they have been proven effective by her satisfied clients like Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel, USANA Philippines, Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), and SM (Style Lab). After landing on the Top Five Circle of Body Shots, Patty was crowned Bb. Pilipinas International in 1991, and competed in Tokyo, Japan. Her invaluable experience in the model search and the beauty pageant came in handily every time she gets invited to deliver inspirational talks to young women in different schools like Colegio de San Agustin or Colegio de Sta. Rosa.
One other favourite speaker of most college students whom they consider their fashion model idol is
Marina Benipayo. When Marina bagged the Body Shots 1988 title, little did she know that it will be the start of her long and glorious reign as the country’s Queen of Runway. There was actually no stopping her lucky streak since Body Shots as she went on to become the Bb. Pilipinas World in 1992. The level-headed model, however, knew the value of continuous education by letting herself gain the muchneeded work experience from various fields of business, government, education, and the service industry, while at the same time completing all the required subjects for a Master of the Arts degree in Guidance & Counselling. Her hard work and perseverance were duly rewarded in 2011 when she was bestowed the recognition of Outstanding Alumna of St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina. That same year, too, the First Philippine Fashion Awards handed her the award for “Excellence in Fashion Modelling.” Marina has two sons, Mark and Joshua, whom she describes as her inspiration for all her life’s achievements. “They are primarily the reason why I am what I am today,” she exclaims with so much fondness and endearment.

Through the years, Marina has wisely equipped herself with the right attitude and work habits to become a multi-faceted personality: a successful selfgrowth/behaviour management speaker; an image enhancement & beauty pageant trainer; an instructor at the School of Fashion & the Arts (SoFA), a lifestyle columnist for the Philippine Daily Inquirer; and a freelance television and movie actress.

ntricately designed fishes, whimsical cats, and rainbow swirled characters set in a vibrant wonderland. Sounds like a description for a Disney movie? Well, it could be, but these elements are actually a staple in 12 year old child artist, Hamzah Marbella’s Kaleidoscope World also known as his Worksof-Art World. The son of Renato (who is also an artist) and Elma Marbella, Hamzah is the eldest of seven children and has been exposed to the arts since he was around two years old. He would watch his father create art from his crib, and as a toddler, he already became quite resourceful, using ordinary items such as bottle caps or clothes pins to create interesting figures of people or plants. When his parents recognized his gift, it was an immediate transition to crayons, pencils and drawing paper. At age five, an age where most of us were still learning how to read and write, Hamzah was practically a veteran in the local art scene since he was recognized as the youngest member of the Art Association of the Philippines. And, in this same age where we were still honing our motor and cognitive skills, Hamzah has already auctioned out his artwork titled “Bounty” for an astounding HK$60,000 in a charity event of the International Care Ministries (ICM) in Hong Kong. This Boy Wonder has created about 300 works of Art to date which have been showcased around Asia and the United Nations headquarters in New York. To top off the many achievements under Hamzah’s belt, he has also received around 50 national and international awards which include recognitions from the Philippine’s National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the United Nations International Children’s Art Competition. Still, this Child Prodigy is like any other regular boy who is into the Spiderman craze, enjoys the game DOTA, and likes playing basketball especially when it’s with his siblings. But, he also has a good head on his shoulders since he finds school work fun. He does extremely well in Math and Science and has nabbed more than a few academic awards. When asked what his inspiration was when it came to creating his paintings, he fondly recalls the antics he would witness in his hometown in General Trias, Cavite as a young child. Whenever his family have fish as their meal, there would always be a mischievous cat trying to snatch the fish away. These delightful memories can be seen depicted in Hamzah’s work of art. It isn’t any wonder why Promil Pre-School has chosen him as an Outstanding Child Artist, who could no doubt, someday, become one of our National Artists.
