about this
Issue
Wise people sometimes say that it’s not WHAT you know, but WHO you know. Part of the value of living in a small community is really getting to know the people around you. The pages in this special “Profiles in Community” section will help introduce you to more of those people in Addison County and Brandon. Community is at the core of what makes Vermont such an extraordinary place to live. Knowing the name or some tidbit of information about your neighbor, shopkeeper, hairdresser, banker, or car mechanic is what helps us stick together. Volunteering and engaging in public conversations, knowing that your voice can actually make a difference, is what keeps us engaged. Each individual and each business, institution or organization has a role to play that’s unique and important. And through each of our efforts, we create a vibrant community. We invite you to spend some time with this thick special supplement and put names to some of the faces you see around town. Reflect on the importance of working together to make our towns and state a great place to live and work, while also recognizing that one of the joys of living in small towns is getting to know how each one of us helps to make up the greater whole. For more than 30 years, the Addison County Independent has published this special section to help our readers know a little bit more about the people who play such a vital role in our communities. In this year’s section, we visited around 150 area businesses to snap their photos, introduce their teams and tell their unique stories. While the particulars of each story varies widely, the general theme is the same — each story serves as a tribute to the hard-working employees and employers who make each business the success that it is. We hope you enjoy these pages and that you take the time to reacquaint yourself with these businesses — and the names of their employees. You’ll find that our community is filled not only with products and services, but also with the smiles of those who greet us each day and the thanks we offer in return. — The Editors

Sunrise Orchards is a 200 acre, family owned and operated, wholesale apple farm located in Cornwall, VT. We are devoted to growing excellent apples for our local community as well as the entire Northeast region. We average about 130,000 bushels of apples each year, although it varies widely depending on weather. We grow many varieties such as McIntosh, Empire, Cortland, Honeycrisp, Macoun, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala and Paula Red, as well as many cider specific varieties. In midAugust, harvest begins at Sunrise Orchards and we also start to pack and distribute our apples through our local delivery route all over Vermont and outside the state to markets in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. We store about half of our crop in refrigerated and controlled atmosphere storage (at Vermont Refrigerated Storage in Shoreham, VT) and pack it throughout the winter and spring, continuing to distribute to all of our customers. In mid-May, just about when we finish selling all the apples, we start a new season all over again with a beautiful bloom.
Thank you for your support of our farm.
~ Barney and Christiana Hodges
Our apples and cider are available locally at Middlebury Natural Foods CoOp and Middlebury Shaw’s, as well as many supermarkets around Vermont. Please visit our website, sunriseorchards.com and follow us on Instagram at Sunrise_Orchards to hear about happenings on the farm!

Monroe Street Books
FOUNDER DICK CHODKOWSKI, left, and staffer Timm Williams have 100,000 books for sale on the shelves behind them at Monroe Street Books on Route 7 North in Middlebury. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, they have 60,000 more volumes in storage.
Monroe Street Books makes its mark in both online, brick-and-mortar markets
By JAMES FINN MIDDLEBURY — Most people who drive past the inconspicuous bookstore located two miles north of Middlebury on Route 7 would never guess what lies within. “When people come in, they’re blown away,” said Timm Williams, who works in the store daily. “They say, ‘I’ve driven by for years and I never realized,’ and then they come in and they’re hooked.” Monroe Street Books, the self-proclaimed largest used bookstore in Vermont, boasts a collection of 100,000 used volumes on its shelves and another 60,000 in its storage basement. The store’s packed, ceiling-high shelves offer something for everyone, from their hundreds of science-fiction novels to glossy fashion photography volumes to the many vintage posters sealed in plastic bags that hang on the walls. For Williams and Dick Chodkowski, who owns the store with his wife Flanzy, an appreciation for the material process of book buying lies at the heart of their work. “To me and to Dick, coming into a store and being able to hold the book in your hands is the whole experience,” Williams said. The store, founded in 2004, operates under the motto “Browsing is arousing.” Recently, though, the used book buyers’ oasis has had to alter its foundational approach a bit. For the past several years, the Chodkowskis’ operation has shifted toward a dual in-store and online sales approach meant to help the operation survive a changing booksellers’ landscape that has pushed many sellers towards online platforms, and scores more out of the business entirely.

1992 and was located on its namesake street, in a small barn behind the Chodkowskis’ home, after they moved to Middlebury from Los Angeles. Dick Chodkowski had worked in advertising prior to making the move and had a vast book collection that he had accumulated as a result of his interest in graphic design, fashion and photography. The bookstore moved to its current location on Route 7, formerly a garage for 18-wheelers, when the space opened up in 2004. Some of the books from Chodkowski’s original collection still sit on the shelves at Monroe Street today. The store’s collection is replenished largely through donations, and Chodkowski also offers store credit for some volumes. Books generally cost between $1 and $20, with the occasional rarity priced higher — a signed copy of Julia Alvarez’s “In the Time of the Butterflies” goes for $25, for example. The store’s inventory is incredibly broad, with wellstocked sections on subjects from Latin American history to track and field to nautical non-fiction. Although running a brick-and-mortar operation continues to be a challenge in the face of ever-growing competition from online sellers, Monroe Street Books continues to operate smoothly. Chodkowski says that he doesn’t read as much as he used to, but his love of books still pushes him to keep the operation running. “You do it because you love it, and you hope that you end up making a little money at it at the end of the day,” he said. Monroe Street Books operates seven days a week (including holidays), 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on MondaySaturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

We believe that everyone who needs help with financial planning, investment management, taxes and/or business accounting deserves a service provider they know and can trust. So we created Marble Trail Financial by bringing together two respected firms: Addison Advisors of Middlebury, Vermont, and Misasi & Company of Middlebury and Dorset. We are experienced professionals, committed to our community, who combine asset management with tax preparation as well as comprehensive financial planning to offer a complete package of financial services for individuals, families, and businesses. Our business takes inspiration from the Marble Trail — the geological corridor of western Vermont whose marble, quarried here since the 1700s, has been crafted into many of America’s most treasured public buildings, monuments, and works of art. Just like the Marble Trail, our roots are here in Vermont, our experience is solid, and our connections spread far and wide. As registered investment advisors and certified public accountants, we are held, and we hold ourselves, to a higher fiduciary standard: to act in the best interest of each client, in every interaction. We’re a small firm, which allows us to work closely with every client, and it means we can consistently deliver high-quality, personalized service — the kind that earns trust, and rewards it. We love what we do. Our work can be complex, but our goal is simple: we strive to make longterm, positive differences for everyone who places their trust in Marble Trail Financial.

Farmer Owned and Operated
The Cabot Creamery Cooperative is owned by families on 1,000 different dairy farms. Some of these family farms started with Cabot at its founding
in 1919. The cooperative provides jobs for over 900 people. Each employ-
ee owner is dedicated to producing delicious dairy products that give back to the planet in sustainable ways. Cabot produces cheese, yogurt, butter and dairy dips. Their commitment to sustainability reaches from farm to
fork. Cabot’s pledge is “living within our means and ensuring the means to live.” This commitment makes Cabot one of the greatest examples of corporate social responsibility that we have found.
Cabot honors the hard work of its farmers by using traditional production techniques. The company ages its cheese naturally. This means it takes
longer to make the product, but the product is of a better quality. All of
Cabot’s profits are returned to the farmers. The farmers benefit from the
Cabot brand. They know the milk they produce will go into making a product they can be proud of.

hirty-five years ago, Gill and Jeanne LaRoche opened Gill’s Place Boat Repair at their Salisbury home. Their son, Marc, joined the business 23 years ago, and today they have expanded to selling and installing Hewitt boat lifts and docks, as well as servicing motor boats, ATVs and snowmobiles.

Fire & Ice is serious about serving great food. Paris is always happy to see you! Our entire staff looks forward to serving you. Service, however, has always been the heart of their business. With more than 48 years of experience working on boats (Gill started in 1970 at Vergennes Marine and since 1983 out of their home in Salisbury), Gill has seen it all and knows boats and engines inside and out. Marc has also been working on engines — boats, go-carts and snowmobiles — for more than 21 years and has started a companion business setting up and taking down docks and boat lifts and doing dock work via his barge. Along with their service and sales business, they also offer boat storage, featuring 78 covered spaces for winter storage, plus outside storage for boats not requiring shelter. Boat owners who have their boats stored at Gill’s Place also get their boats tuned up, washed and delivered in time for summer simply by calling at least a week ahead of expected delivery.
Our staff looks forward to seeing you!
Gill’s wife, Jeanne, not pictured, has served as bookkeeper, and errand-runner for the past 35 years. Of their marriage of 50-plus years, and their teamwork in business, she says simply: “we work good together; always have.” They work well with their customers, too. If your boat needs service, give them a call.

Gill LaRoche, right, has been repairing boat engines and working on boats since first starting at Vergennes Marine in 1970, while son Marc, left, joined the business 23 years ago. Not pictured is Gill’s wife, Jeanne, who has done the books, and much more, from the get-go.

As part of our commitment to Triple Terroir, we harvest our estate-grown oak trees to make our barrels. Why? Vermont is about as far north as oak trees can grow. The shorter growing seasons leads to oak tress with the most growth rings – when aging whiskey encounters a growth ring in a barrel it imparts flavor, so our custom Vermont Oak barrels bring tremendous depth to our whiskeys. One more reason to love Vermont.

VRS handles produce with care at refrigerated warehouse in Shoreham By RACHEL COHEN SHOREHAM — It takes a whole lot of chemistry to be able to eat an apple in July. Vermont Refrigerated Storage, or VRS, on Route 22A in Shoreham has keeping apples fresh for extended periods down to a science. With a series of temperature-controlled rooms, each with specific levels of oxygen and nitrogen, co-owner Barney Hodges is able to ensure that clients like Champlain Orchards can keep their fruit fresh throughout the winter and spring, and into the summer months. “Apples perspire and breathe,” Hodges explained. “To store apples long-term, we have to alter the atmosphere of the rooms. We do two daily readings on the rooms to monitor their oxygen levels,” Hodges said. VRS, co-owned by Hodges, his wife Christiana, and Gregory O’Brien, specializes in apple storage for eight, sometimes more, growers in the Champlain Valley. For most growers, VRS serves as a supplementary storage facility they might have on their own properties. Starting around Sept. 15 and up until Nov. 1, growers bring in their apples straight from the fields. VRS takes in around 230,000 bushels during the annual harvest. One bushel of apples is equivalent to

FUTURE DIRECTIONS Hodges and Brinkman are inspired by Shacksbury’s success, and want to make their spaces available and amenable to more entrepreneurs. “We’re interested in facilitating start-ups,” Hodges said. Since Shacksbury put down its roots in VRS, other small companies have used VRS’s variety of storage offerings, including Sap! Beverages; Tata Harper, a skincare company in Shoreham; a Canadian biotech company; and Creed Ice Co Inc. of Rutland. Middlebury Foods, a student-run non-profit out of Middlebury College, uses VRS’s refrigerated storage space to store and pack its local food offerings. “We really make almost no money on that deal, but it’s a good thing to do, so we’re psyched to support them,” Hodges said of VRS’s partnership with Middlebury Foods. In addition to supporting the start-ups that already work with VRS, Hodges would like to see new businesses develop out of VRS’s spaces. “Because of the infrastructure that’s here — forklifts, tall ceilings, town water, power — I feel like we could be a really great space that incubates businesses, warehouses people’s products, as well as continuing with the ag component,” he said.
