Wonderland: Where dreams come true

H

ave you ever wondered what it would be like to put your life on pause, and, for just one night, become something of your dreams? What would you be?

These things of dreams become reality when you walk into Wonderland — a costume, alterations, vintage and otherwise fantastical shop on Middlebury’s Main Street.

Hannah Hurlburt has made it her business to be our fairy godmother — granting all our wishes true.

“I get the greatest joy helping transform others into their alter ego — helping dreams come true,” said the 2004 Middlebury Union grad.

“There are characters and creatures I’ve always dreamed of being,” she continued. “I get the chance every Halloween to pick one of mine, and help others morph into theirs.”

This year, Hurlburt picked a dragon.

“I always wanted to be a dragon,” she explained. “As soon as I saw the wings I knew I had to do my own version.”

Hurlburt’s costume creation this year is inspired by Spyro the Dragon cosplay.

Hang on... Let’s break that last bit down. Spyro the Dragon is a video game developed by Insomiac Games for PlayStation; it was first released in North America in 1998. Spyro, the title character, is a young purple dragon. Ok, now, what’s “cosplay?” That’s a contraction of the words “costume play.” Feel a little smarter?

Hurlburt combined patterns and crafted her own Spyro — a green and gold dragon complete with a three-foot wingspan, horns and a tail.

It’s pretty phenomenal that early on I got that really good base of hand skills that at this point I still reflect back on that, how it helps me make whatever I want to make.

lass art is as contradictory as it is versatile: functional pieces are still fragile, an object’s weight often belies what the eye expects, and a glass piece may appear to be the single moment of inspiration of an artist, when it is in fact the result of years of study, repetition and hard work behind a hot torch.

Artist Jen Violette, of Wilmington, Vt., is a master of this tricky medium. She makes wall mounted sculptures of fruits and vegetables — a single peach dusted in yellow and crimson powdered glass for its “fuzz,” a pair of eggplants, or two apples of different sizes titled “Mother and Child.” These rest on a wooden shelf against a stainless steel background. Another series are her farmscapes, which feature cast glass houses that beg to be held in your palm, but mainly rest on painted mahogany “land.”

Violette does the wood and metal work in her sculpture, and she paints and works in bronze as well, but her skill in glass, whether it’s cast, blown, or lamp-worked, is remarkable.

See her work at the Edgewater Gallery’s group exhibit “Of The Land” at the gallery on the falls in Middlebury through October.

Don’t worry, if you miss the last few days of the group exhibit, Violette’s work is also part of the regular collection of artists shown at Edgewater year round.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START WORKING WITH GLASS?

her extensive glass education. She received her BFA from Alfred University, and has taken workshops at some of the top institutes for glass including the Pilchuck School, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, the Penland School of Crafts, RISD, and the Corning Museum of Glass. In a recent interview, Violette spoke to how her education has shaped where her work leads her now.

HOW HAS YOUR EDUCATION INFLUENCED YOUR WORK WITH GLASS? I’ve been very fortunate to study with a lot of very well known, famous glass artists. I was really lucky early on in my glass career; I was in the right place at the right time. Sometimes I look back and I’m a bit surprised that I was able to do that. I was pretty young then, between the ages of 19 and 21, and I was able to see a whole bunch of stuff from glass

It was in 1991 when I was 18, during my freshman year at Alfred University. I was studying art, working mostly two dimensionally — painting and printmaking — and a good friend of mine who was a grad student in glass convinced me to try glassblowing. I was hooked from the first time I tried it and have loved it ever since.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON RECENTLY? About a month or so ago I went back and took a class; I hadn’t taken a class in 13 years. This was at the Corning Glass Museum, and I ended up getting a scholarship to a glass workshop, called “Sculpting Inside the Bubble.” It involved learning a whole bunch of techniques from this Czech glass master, who’s only 36 years old, Martin Janecky.

It was fabulous to be a student again. Martin had a lot of cool tricks that I hadn’t seen before. I got inspired again to make new pieces, and I worked on making glass hands that were holding a glass acorn, or a glass radish. It was interesting, when I was making the hands, that this was the first time I’d been away from my family in a long time, so the hands I was making ended up being the size of our sons’ hands. on just happened to be the size of their hands.

HOW DOES YOUR WORK FIT INTO THE GROUP EXHIBIT “OF THE LAND”?

The fruits or vegetables in the hands fit well into that. But also my farmscape pieces. The inspiration for those comes in part from our own home. We live in an old farmhouse in Willmington that we renovated ourselves, and we have two old barns that we lovingly restored.

One of the barns is my art studio. There’s a lot of history in our property, and we’ve been here 15 years.

Living in this atmosphere, working in an old barn, I’m inspired by the barn form and the houses, the way they lay on the landscape. I get a lot of inspiration from driving around, looking at the old buildings and imagining who maybe lived there, years ago. So I think about the history and how the buildings sit on the ground, how they’re really overgrown all around them, which I try to get through the painted mahogany bases I make for my pieces, to make it seem like the buildings have sat there for a while.

And I am always simplifying the buildings, I try to simplify the barn forms to be really basic.

This maybe ties into having young kids and being around their toys. Sometimes they create their own landscape, they’re always playing with Legos. But I’ve always been into toys, even before we had kids, I like simplicity in form, simplifying the barn down to the essence of the barn.

CONSIDERING THE GLASS FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THAT YOU CREATE, DO YOU DO ANY GARDENING WITH REAL FOOD?

| ARTS+LEISURE | Thursday, October 27, 2016 — PAGE 3 then I “plant” the seedling. But I’m using a lot of heat with the torch, so this thing comes to life by becoming molten and hot, and it sort of has a little life of its own.

I try to simplify my fruits and vegetables too, I don’t want to create every last little detail.

With the glass wall sculptures, the fruits and vegetables, I like the simplicity of the color and the form, and how it plays up against the stainless steel background, and I make it have different surface texture on the glass than the texture on the metal.

I do a fair amount of gardening here in our yard.

We have a lot of big blueberry bushes and we have a lot of old apple trees in our yard, and we grow a lot of vegetables. It’s very inspiring to be growing the stuff and then harvesting it.

Working with molten glass year round, it’s sort of like I can feel like I’m gardening year round, like I’m creating these forms in the middle of winter. It’s a nice to be using those vibrant colors when it can be a little bleak outside.

Sometimes I make these little flowerpots with a little glass seedling sprouting out of it. Those are fun because I put the little sprout in a kiln nearby that stays warm, and I sculpt the little flowerpot

We’ve heard a tip that on Friday Oct. 28 around 5 p.m. there will be a Punkin' Plunkin’ event starting under the Cross Street Bridge in Middlebury. Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes will plunk into the Otter Creek and race down the river and over the falls.

VUHS hosts Jazz Ambassadors FREE CONCERT COMES TO VERGENNES THURSDAY EVENING

T

he Vergennes Opera House welcomes the Jazz Ambassadors of the United States Army Field Band for a free public concert at the Vergennes High School Gymnasium on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. This concert is part of the Jazz Ambassadors’ 2016 Northeast U.S. fall tour.

THURSDAY 3 NOV.

An added treat during Vergennes Union High School the day is a special workshop with the Army Field Band for the students in the VUHS Jazz Band. Additionally, three VUHS Jazz Band students will be sitting in for one song at the evening concert. The lucky students are Eva Kamman (alto sax), Jameson Haggett (trumpet) and Zeke Palmer (trombone).

The Jazz Ambassadors first started back in 1969.

Leading American Jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington were hired to be “ambassadors” for the United States overseas, or so says the Jazz Ambassadors’ Wikipedia page. This program was designed to improve the public image of the U.S. in light of the criticism from the Soviet Union around racial inequality and racial tension.

The Jazz Ambassadors have appeared in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India and throughout Europe.

“This is truly a community-wide event with enthusiastic involvement by people from throughout the area,” said Jim Lanpher, Vergennes Opera House Board member and coordinator of the concert. “We’re so pleased to be hosting this event and that it is free for everyone to enjoy.”

Hurlburt who is celebrating her 30th birthday today (Thursday, Oct. 27) said she’s wanted to design clothes since she was five years old.

“It happened when I was watching The Wizard of Oz,” Hurlburt remembered. “I watched the bubble float across the screen and become Glinda the Good Witch. Seeing the character transformation of bubble to beautiful witch really spoke to me... And I’ve been playing dress-up ever since.”

“It’s always a pleasant surprise,” said Hurlburt.

“Sometimes the most strait-laced people come in looking for a bunny mask and corset, and then someone kind of funky will come in and want to be Little Bo Peep.

“I get to meet the coolest people,” continued Hurlburt, who together with her mom Janine Clookey and four other off-and-on employees run Wonderland and The Good Witch. “The people who come into my shop are the most open minded wonderful people in the community. I’m really grateful to be here and so thankful that people are letting me do what I do.”

— Hannah Hurlburt In fact, this moment made such an impression, after graduating Mass College of Art Hurlburt launched her own brand in 2009 and named it “The Good Witch” — that’s how she got into the business of granting wishes.

“I design because of what I like to call ‘the moment of truth,’” she said. “It’s when I’m done designing, I’ve made all the cuts, laid it out and sewn it together... then you try the piece on and, when it’s right you get the greatest rush.

It’s pure energy and positive fun. The moment of truth is the essence of why I design something.”

Hurlburt acknowledged that shops like hers are more common in bigger cities, and yeah, sure, the numbers might be higher, but she’s happy to be in Middlebury.

“I hope I’m providing a service to town,” she said, noting her tailoring, alteration and vintage side of the business.

“I hope I’m also providing a space for folks who are a little more alternative, and most of all, I hope I’m bringing another culture to town.”

Then, of course, you get to debut the new outfit.

So, if you don’t believe in dreams-come-true, go see Hannah downtown. She’ll waive her wand, flap her wings or swish her tail, and you’ll be a believer before you leave.

WHO IS DRACULA?

SUPERSTITIONS REVEALED

Despite the movies, books, historical references and personal delving into his story, there is much that is still a mystery about the story of Dracula — the mythological figure purported to feed on the blood of unsuspecting victims.

The blood-sucking being explored in the novel by Bram Stoker is believed to have been loosely based on an individual from Romania credited with heinous and bloody crimes. Vlad III, also known as Vlad Tepes “Vlad the Impaler,” descended from a father named Vlad II Dracul from the House of Draculesti. This was in the House of Basarab. These people were a family that had an important role in the establishing of the Principality of Wallachia, a geographical region in Romania. The Romanian word “drac,” derived from the Latin word “draco,” means both dragon and devil.

Halloween is steeped in tradition. Halloween season also is a time of year when superstitions take root and add to the spooky holiday.

Vlad III was a prince who spent much of his rule campaigning against the Ottoman Empire and its expansion. He was well known for impaling his enemies, and his reputation for his excessive cruelty grew throughout Europe. He was likely dubbed “Dracula” thanks to his family name.

• Legend has it that you will have good luck if you sleep facing south the night before Halloween.

Many people believe that Bram Stoker borrowed loosely on the tale of Vlad III to create his book. Other than the name and the region in the world where Count Dracula was supposed to have lived, there are no real similarities between the fictional and historical Dracula. According to a book written by Nicolae Stoicescu entitled “Vlad Tepes,” the author expresses resentment about how the historical figure of Dracula had been appropriated by the West and converted into a popular horror icon. He is quoted as saying, “This nonsense ascribed to Dracula [the novel] is highly popular and overshadows the true image of the Prince of Walachia. Those who would like to go on cultivating Dracula the vampire are free to do it without, however, forgetting that he has nothing in common with the Romanian history where the real Vlad Tepes whom we know by his deeds holds a place of honor.”

• Some believe that bats flying around a house on Halloween — either indoors or outside — is a sign that spirits lurk nearby.

• Black cats have long been thought to be companions of witches or “familiars,” demonic animals gifted to them.

While some think it’s bad luck for a black cat to cross your path, in Ireland, Scotland and England, black cats symbolize good luck.

• Some say that if you walk around your home backward three times and then counterclockwise three times before the sun sets on Halloween, you will ward off nearby evil spirits.

• On Halloween night, peel an apple. The longer the peel is without breaking, the longer you’ll live.

• If you spot a spider on Halloween, the spirit of a deceased loved one is watching over you.

• It is said that no person should lie in a coffin while alive, even for fun. Otherwise, he or she is inviting death.

Also, no item of clothing belonging to a living person should ever be put on a corpse when it is placed in a coffin, for as it rots in the grave so will the rightful owner’s health begin to decline.

• Children who are born on Halloween are said to have the gift of second sight, which may also include the power to ward off evil spirits.

• People have been warned not to turn around on Halloween night if they hear footsteps behind them, as this could mean Death is following.

• When you pass a graveyard or house where someone has died, you should turn your pockets inside out to make sure you don’t bring home a ghost in your pocket.

Seeing a ghost

Don't get scared. We're gonna keep it scientific... well mostly. Parapsychology is the study of paranormal activity and beings, which may be intertwined with spectrology, or the study of ghosts and phantoms.

Differences between apparitions and ghosts “Apparition” and “ghost” are two different things. The term “apparition” is used for any kind of visual, paranormal manifestation, while a “ghost” is just one type of apparition. Other apparitions may be inanimate objects, animals, lights or orbs. Ghosts are defined as spiritual entities, which are usually human. Typically ghosts are conscious of themselves and their surroundings.

People have various explanations as to why ghosts continue to stick around long after their bodies have expired. Some may be comforting living relatives, while others may be seeking revenge. Ghosts may not understand they are actually dead and, as a result, may frequent the places they found most comforting while they were living. Some ghosts are confused and just don’t know what is going on.

Some people are simply more in tune with the paranormal world than others. Those with an open mind may have a better chance of crossing paths with a ghost and recognizing the encounter. Many ghost-hunting organizations and scientists capture electronic voice phenomena, or EVP, on tape as an indication that ghosts may be present.

Another way to potentially encounter a ghost is to visit an area where many people died suddenly, such as a former battlefield. According to Studies of the Paranormal, a person is more likely to encounter a ghost in a home or another building than at a cemetery.

According to experts, many ghosts are not around to harm others. However, poltergeists, which are another type of spirit or disembodied energy, can be destructive. Some believe they create loud noises, throw objects and even start fires.

Ghosts may be the subject matter of Halloween scary stories and movies, but plenty of people are convinced they are real and move among the living seen and unseen.

THE SWEET HISTORY OF CANDY Halloween is as much about candy as it is about dressing up in fun costumes and scaring the pants off your little sister (ahem, or brother).

Humans have loved their sweets for centuries. Early human beings made candy out of honey by drying it and forming a taffy-like confection, while many modern incarnations of candy involve dissolving sugar into water or milk to form a syrup.

Candy is then made by varying the temperature of the syrup and the sugar concentration to achieve desired textures. The word “candy” is derived from the Arabic “quandi,” meaning “made of sugar.”

The term "candy" definitely includes chocolate bars. Ancient Mayans and Aztecs were the first to experiment with the cocoa bean, the cornerstone of chocolate confections, in the 1500s. However, their chocolate drinks were bitter. It wasn’t until the 19th century that innovators began mixing cocoa with sugar to create chocolate bars. Joseph Fry is credited with making the first chocolate bar in 1847, (thanks Joe!) using bittersweet chocolate. Milk chocolate came later, in 1875, when it was introduced by Henry Nestlé and Daniel Peter. Milton Hershey began producing sweet chocolate in 1894.

Lots of the ol' school candy is still made today. Tootsie Rolls and Charleston Chews examples of classic candies still produced. Good & Plenty debuted in 1893, making it the oldest branded candy in America. NECCO company Wafers were officially branded in 1901 and are another classic treat consumers can still find. their front doorsteps to appease spirits that were believed to be roaming the Earth on this holiday.

Many historians also feel that trick-or-treating can be linked to the European practice of “mumming” or “guysing,” in which costume-wearing individuals would go door-to-door, performing dances and plays in exchange for treats.

Smarties — now there's a candy that’s bound to show up in trick-or-treat bags this Halloween. Smarties have been owned and operated by the same family since 1949. The Ce De Candy Inc. factory opened up in August 1949 in Bloomfield, NJ, and produced a candy that would not melt in the heat.

Halloween wouldn’t be nearly as sweet without troves of candy treasures (after carfuly inspected, and tasted, by mom and dad — of course.)

arlic is more than just a flavoring for foods, having many health benefits.

Studies have shown that garlic has antioxidant properties, promoting the health of the heart and immune systems.

“Allicin” — the chemical produced when garlic is chopped, chewed or bruised — is a powerful antibiotic. Garlic even has been shown to reduce cholesterol.

Successful growing of garlic starts with choosing the right “seeds,” and giving the correct growing conditions and culture.

Plant two inches deep, four to six inches apart in rows, with rows a foot apart. You can plant small cloves closer, or in patches to harvest the tops as garlic greens. Harvest too late and the sheaths will have come off, leaving just the cloves that are hard to get out of the ground or they may even begin growing. Ideal harvest is when there are two to four sheath layers present, which occurs over about a two-week period.

Once harvested, wash the bulbs and allow them to dry for a week or so, out of direct sun. Then trim off the roots, remove the outer dried sheath layers, and then braid if you wish for storage. Cool (50 to 65 F), dry, and well-ventilated are ideal conditions for storage. Check monthly to discard any soft bulbs that may be rotting internally. Set aside the largest cloves for planting again in fall.

the movie DENIAL — RUNNING TIME: 1:50 — RATING: PG-13 Denial is a nearly flawless movie made by a team of British filmmakers who have been honored individually in the past with an Oscar, a Cannes Award, an Emmy and other nominations. They know what they’re doing and together they have created a movie that is written and acted with great complexity. This true story is likely to stay with you long after you leave the theater.

In reality and on screen, Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) is a professor at Emory University in Atlanta. She has written a book, History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier. As the movie opens, she has been sued by British writer David Irving (Timothy Spall) who has built his life and career on trying to convince the world that the Holocaust never happened, that there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz.

If that seems to be an easy win for Lipstadt, remember that while in America we are innocent until proven guilty, in Britain we are guilty until proven innocent. As Deborah Lipstadt’s British legal team takes on the job of actually proving the Holocaust did happen, the collective talent of this British film group assumes the challenge of having to prove something the world has believed for more than 70 years.

Based on Lipstadt’s book, British playwright David Hare’s complex screenplay reflects the demands of British law while we in the audience are increasingly absorbed by trying to understand the strategy of her legal team. There isn’t a moment when we know what is coming next.

This is a legal thriller with high stakes.

In Tom Wilkinson’s hands, defense lawyer Rampton becomes a riveting study of a man who knows he must master all the detail if he is to win.

His lawyer is brilliant, manipulative, and secretive inside and out of court.

Credit Andrew Scott with a fine portrait of solicitor Anthony Julius who steers Lipstadt through the legal process that demands she remain silent.

such skill that we understand why the law suit is the challenge it is.

Spall literally becomes David Irving, the Nazi sympathizer, the relentless historian who says the gas chambers were a myth. He generates our hatred with masterful skill.

Rachel Weisz, who builds the explosive American who knows her stuff, is a marvelous study as she is silenced by her lawyers when she wants to preach from the witness box. As she begins to understand the complexity of their plan, she holds back. Hers is a performance that moves slowly from determination to be heard to acceptance, to understanding – and she does it all beautifully.

Whatever you may know about the Holocaust, you are likely to be immersed in suspense as the movie unfolds. Flawless writing, acting, and directing combine to silence us from beginning to end. The British have shown us how to stun an audience with a brutal piece of history.

MERCURY — BY MARGOT LIVESEY In this brilliant story of an unhappy family, Viv and Donald are married with children. They are struggling to handle the loss of Donald’s father after a long illness. Mercury is a horse, a big beautiful thoroughbred, a striking athletic horse who injects energy into the stable Viv manages.

Viv projects her unfulfilled dream of competing at a very high level onto Mercury and Donald, in his own fog, is unaware of how invested in this horse she has become. This meticulously written book is not technically a thriller in my opinion, but it is oh-so-suspenseful. The vivid descriptions of Viv riding Mercury and Donald coping with his father’s death are so honest and real and the supporting characters lend a depth and richness to the story. Donald narrates at first, but then the pace picks up when Viv begins to tell her part of the story.

The novel wraps up in a very satisfying manner. Margot Livesey is a Scottish born writer who came to North America during the 1970s and is now the New York Times bestselling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy and other novels, a collection of short stories, and numerous essays on writing. Mercury is her eighth novel.

alloween cleanup can be the scariest thing about the holiday. Here are a few tips on how to remove eggs, toilet paper, wax and other messes that go bump in the night.

EGG SPLATTERS ON THE HOUSE Time is your enemy when your house has been egged, because sunbaked yolks can stain your siding. Also, micro-shards of shell can become embedded in paint or act as an abrasive when you clean off the gunk.

Instead of scrubbing, spray away the egg with your garden hose. But don’t aim the hose full blast at the yolk, which will splatter the mess.

Instead, Popular Mechanics magazine suggests first wetting the siding below the egg, then gently spraying the siding above the egg; the water will fall in sheets and flush away the mess.

If you need more cleaning oomph, dip a brush into a bucket of warm water (never hot, which will bake on yolks) and dish soap, and then scrub away the mess.

TOILET PAPER IN THE TREES Wet toilet paper is a beast to remove from

trees. So wait until the sun evaporates dew; or, if rain is predicted, start removal right away.

Use a rake to grab and pull the TP down, a leaf blower to blast it, or a telescoping reacher/grabber to pluck it.

Start at the top and work your way down. Immediately throw paper away: Leaving it on your lawn can smother grass.

CANDLE WAX ON THE CARPETS Never try to remove hot wax from carpeting. Not only can you burn yourself, but you’ll likely spread the wax, making a bigger mess.

When the wax has cooled, break it with a dull knife or Popsicle stick. Throw away the pieces.

Always test the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot.

Apply a dab of cleaner on a white cloth, then hold it to the test area for about a minute. If no color is transferred to the white cloth, the cleaner is safe.

Never rub cleaner on a stain. Rather, blot the stain starting from its outer edge and work to the center.

Cover remaining bits with a paper towel or rag, and press a warm iron to the area. Replace the towel frequently to avoid spreading the wax.
