Brady should keep fighting NFL in court For the record, I believe New England Patriots employees at the January 2015 AFC championship game deflated footballs to the lowest legal limit of 11.5 pounds per square inch preferred by quarterback Tom Brady. Cold weather did the rest, as has been proven by everybody from Lynn, Mass., 7th-graders to Washington, D.C., think-tankers. That act led us to the saga of Deflategate, the latest chapter of which was written on Monday, when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reinstated Brady’s suspension. Let’s take a look back at the NFL’s Deflategate punishment of the Patriots — and penalties it issued to other teams for other infractions. Here are two scenarios courtesy of forbes. com, and then the Deflategate penalties: 1. “The NFL … announced today that the use of a cell phone on multiple occasions during games in 2014 by Cleveland Browns General Manager Ray Farmer was a violation of NFL rules that prohibit certain uses of electronic devices during games. The league has fined the Browns $250,000 and Farmer will be suspended without pay for the first four regular-season games of the 2015 season.” Comment: The Browns got an extra, illegal play-caller in the stands for several games. 2. “Atlanta acknowledged the use of pre-recorded crowd noise in violation of NFL rules during home games throughout the 2013 season and into the 2014 season until the club was notified last November that the violation had been identified. The rule states that ‘at no point during the game can artificial crowd noise or amplified crowd noise be played in the stadium’ … the Falcons have been fined $350,000 and will forfeit their fifth-round selection in the 2016 Draft.” Comment: These were multiple (See Kirkaldy, Page 4B)

Panther baseball finishes NESCAC play at .500 MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College baseball team won the final game of a three-game set with visiting NESCAC West foe Amherst this past weekend to keep its playoff

hopes alive. The Panthers (9-15 overall) concluded their NESCAC West schedule with a 6-6 mark and need help to make the league’s postseason:

Amherst (19-8 overall, 6-3 league) must sweep visiting Wesleyan (5-4 league) this weekend, and visiting Hamilton (3-6) must take at least one game from host Williams (4-5

league) for the Panthers to make the playoffs. Wesleyan owns the tiebreaker with Middlebury, but Middlebury (See Panther baseball, Page 2B)

Men’s lax rallies past Colby, eyes home game WATERVILLE, Maine — This past Saturday, the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team defeated host Colby, 15-10, and moved closer to nailing down a home NESCAC quarterfinal. The Panthers, ranked No. 9 in last week’s NCAA Division III poll, moved to 10-4 overall with their sixth straight win, 7-2 in NESCAC play, good for a three-way tie for second place with Amherst and Bowdoin behind 8-1 Tufts. Bates stood in fifth at 6-3. All the teams were set to play their final regular season games on Wednesday afternoon, with the Panthers hosting Williams (8-6, 4-5 NESCAC) and looking for as high a seed as possible with a victory. Against Colby (3-11, 0-9 NESCAC) on Saturday, the Panthers trailed early in the second half, 7-5, but scored eight straight goals to take control. Henry Riehl and Tim Giarrusso scored 1:11 apart to tie the score at 7-7 with 8:04 remaining. Jack Gould made it 8-7 with 25 seconds left in the quarter on a feed from Giarrusso, and Giarrusso scored 13 seconds later on an assist from Nick Peterson to make it 9-7 after three periods. Men’s golf to host league tournament WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s golf team tuned up for this Saturday’s NESCAC championship at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course by finishing second at this past weekend’s Williams Spring Classic. The Panthers earned the right to host this weekend’s NESCAC tournament with their performance this past fall. This weekend’s winner earns the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament. At the Williams event, Middlebury finished with a two-day total of 614 to finish a stroke behind team champion Trinity. The host Ephs placed third (621) during the eight-team event hosted at the Taconic Golf Club, followed by Hamilton (631) in fourth. The Panthers took 10 strokes off their day one score, firing a 302 on Sunday. Middlebury’s Philippe Morin finished second with a 151, carding a 78 on day two after a 73 on Saturday. Fitz Bowen was the top Panther during Sunday’s round, coming in with a 73 to finish in a tie for sixth place with a 156. Joining him in sixth was Rodrigo Andrade, who shaved a pair of strokes off his score with a 77 during Sunday’s round for a two-day total of 156. One stroke behind with a 157 was Bennett Doherty, who tallied an 80 on Sunday, good for an 11th-place tie. Joe Ko (88-74-162) and David McDaniel (84-86-170) rounded out the squad.

Middlebury softball alive for playoffs MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College softball team kept its postseason hopes alive this past weekend by sweeping three games from NESCAC West rival Hamilton (10-22, 3-9 league), and also picked up a pair of non-league wins on Monday. The Panthers improved to 18-8, 4-4 in league play. The league mark does not include a suspended game in which they led host Amherst, 9-6, after five innings. As it stands now, Williams is in first place in NESCAC West at 7-2, while Amherst is 5-3, ahead of the Panthers in third place at 4-4. Amherst won two of three games in that series and would own a tiebreaker if the teams finished with identical league marks. The Panthers conclude their league schedule this Friday and Saturday with three games at Williams, while (See Softball, Page 4B)
