A dark and beautiful Macbeth soars OPERA REVIEW

iuseppe Verdi had the brilliant idea (in 1846) of taking William Shakespeare’s 1606 play “Macbeth” and setting it to music. And this past Friday that brilliant idea was brought to a very full life on the Town Hall Theater stage by the Opera Company of Middlebury.

TJ Cunningham ON EXHIBIT AT EDGEWATER GALLERY, MIDDLEBURY Growing up in Addison, TJ Cunningham always had an appreciation for the beauty of Vermont.

He developed an interest for art at an early age, and chose to pursue an undergraduate art education at Pensacola Christian College in Florida. Though he moved south to attend school, the almost-28-year-old longed for the beauty of his home state and recently returned as a full-time artist.

Cunningham is the June Solo Exhibition Artist at Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury. Ranging from landscapes and still-lifes to intimate portraits, Cunningham’s paintings are created from direct observation of the world around him.

“I try to approach my work more as a realist,” Cunningham explained last week. “I try not to focus on the picturesque — not that you can LIPT MX LIVI MR FIEYXMJYP :IVQSRX . XV] XS ǻRH XLI ERKPI XLEXƶW HMǺIVIRX ERH LSRIWX ƹ Cunningham’s approach to landscape painting is both established and measured. He begins by creating a series of graphite or Sharpie plein air studies. Then he returns to his home-studio in Addison (right next door to the house he grew up in), to conduct a color study, from which he begins work on the larger canvas. Regardless of composition and subject matter, his portfolio consistently presents an honest representation of light and color.

While he enjoys depicting landscapes, Cunningham most intimately connects with the TSVXVE]EP SJ XLI LYQER ǻKYVI EW LI MW HVE[R XS the physicality of the human face. He gracefully tackles the challenge of portraiture, creating images that evoke a strong emotional quality.

In fact, emotion is one of the characteristics he strives to best communicate in his artwork.

“The thing that I want to establish when I’m painting a person is the essence of that person,” Cunningham said. “You can have a rendered likeness of a person without having the feeling... getting the emotion, that’s really the hard part.

It’s the part that’s beyond what they look like — MXƶW RSX WSQIXLMRK QIEWYVEFPI SV IEWMP] HIǻRIH — you just have to kind of feel your way there.”

“I SEE TREMENDOUS ORDER AND BEAUTY IN NATURE... LANDSCAPE PAINTING ON AN INDIVIDUAL LEVEL IS ENJOYING GOD.” I try to give each work as much time as I can. I paint things out, rearrange and re-texture until I can’t stand it anymore.”

Cunningham is most proud of his work that showcases his progress; with nearly 200 paintings signed in his almost six years as a professional artist, he strives to make each painting better than the one before.

Cunningham’s combination of hard work and natural talent have earned him several awards and accolades including: a 2013 Award of *\GITXMSREP 2IVMX ERH E ǻJXL TPEGI E[EVH from the Portrait Society of America, and he was also was recognized in the article, “21 under 31,” published in Southwest Art Magazine, September 2014.

Something you might not read on Cunningham’s bio at the exhibit is that he is a devout Christian. “That is a huge part of my

To believe that there is a God behind it, that there is a creator, and to enjoy his creation is a very rich experience. Landscape painting on an individual level is enjoying God.” The other thing Cunningham’s religion brings is “the faith to keep going and keep trying.” Art can be a scary full-time career, he said, especially when you have a family. June is a big month for the Cunningham family: He and his wife Julie [MPP GIPIFVEXI XLIMV ǻZI ]IEV ERRMZIVWEV] XLIMV son Richard just turned 2, and Cunningham has a busy professional line-up at Edgewater Gallery.

This Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Cunningham will present a painting demonstration that is free and open to the public. He will also teach a sold-out Landscape Painting Workshop later in the month.

Prior to teaming up with Jim James (of the rock band My Morning Jacket) for Ouroboros, LaMontagne joined forces with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys to produce Supernova. What the two albums have in common is a radical expansion of the standard singer/songwriter’s palate to encompass Floydian dreamscapes and WYTIVGLEVKIH FYVWXW SJ IPIGXVMG KYMXEV Ć´ FYX FI]SRH XLIWI TEVEPPIPW 4YVSFSVSW MW E ZIV] HMÇşIVIRX ERMQEP JVSQ its predecessor. “Supernova was childlike and mischievous, like watching kids play,â€? LaMontagne reported in a recent press

release. “This record feels deeper and closer — but it took me a while to translate it. The thing is, it’s not up to me. I let the songs dictate when they want to exist; I don’t force it. When it comes, it’s like Peter Pan knocking on the window.�

LaMontagne plays the electric guitar leads while Jim James plays rhythm and provides harmony vocals.

It is said that “casting is everything” and in the case of “Macbeth,” the two principals are often cast as, say, “Trophy Wife and Fat, Old, Impotent Husband” or “Shrewish Wife from Hell with Milquetoast Spouse” or sometimes just as two very young or very old characters using sex or fear of their mortality to achieve their goals. Joshua Jeremiah and Rochelle Bard are none of that. Rather, they seem like a nice young couple who stumble upon a seemingly golden opportunity to suddenly and easily advance all their latent and not so latent ambitions. And neither can resist. Their “conversations” often take place on a marvelous bed, front and center, solidifying our perception of them as partners in crime, each helping the other down the slippery slope of decency.

Ms. Bard has an amazing voice and a great stage presence. She looks like the girl next door, if, in fact, you happened to live next door to a very beautiful girl with an incredible vocal range. That sweet appearance makes her most interesting to watch as her ambitions to the throne are awakened. Her voice is rich and engaging. Never does an ear splitting sound or strident note emanate from this Bel Canto singer-actress. She is all about the beauty of the music. She is a wonder.

Mr. Jeremiah has an equally marvelous voice and he gives a nuanced, JEWGMREXMRK TIVJSVQERGI EW E GSRǼMGXIH 2EGFIXL -I EKEMR MW EPWS E XVYI singer-actor, bringing a vitality and physicality to the role that is a delight to watch. This Lord and Lady Macbeth engage each other with a sparkling

At Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, the trails lead to the historic Robert Frost Summer Cabin. While walking in this Vermont Poet Laureate’s footsteps, be sure to walk the Robert Frost Nature Trail with poems displayed along the path.

The Long Trail crosses Route 125 at Middlebury Gap. Hike north along the Long Trail and a spur trail 0.8 miles to MPIRX (PMǺ JSV I\GIPPIRX ZMI[W SJ XLI ,VIIR Mountains and Champlain Valley. This region is home to Breadloaf Wilderness, well known for its black bear and moose populations. Day hikers will enjoy Branbury State Park and Silver Lake Campground.

SOUTH Hikers descending from Killington can head XS 7YXPERHƶW (LEǺII &VX (IRXIV ERH ZMWMX Paramount Theatre — a restored 1912 opera house — or visit the Carving Studio, Sculpture Center and the West Rutland Art Park.

At 4,236 feet, Killington Peak is the Vermont’s second highest summit. The Appalachian Trail and Long Trail share the same footpath in this part of the state and come within 0.2 miles of the summit. A spur trail will get you to the summit and is well worth the extra climb. Another excellent hike is the 2.2 mile )IIV 1IET 8VEMP SǺ SJ XLI &TTEPEGLMER 8VEMP with great views from Deer Leap Rock, also a popular destination for rock climbing. South of Killington, from Route 140 in Wallingford, the Long Trail passes through the White Rocks National Recreation Area and leads to a magical garden of rock cairns. Here, you can photograph the existing collection of cairns or — enjoy creating your own.

Campers at Jamaica State Park can head into the village and venture into Elaine Beckwith’s Gallery and dine at the Garden Cafe. Or, head into Manchester to visit Hills Alive, Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Museum of Creative Process. Additional villages near trailheads include Weston, with its Weston Playhouse and Village Green Gallery, as well as Martha’s Folk Art and Mountain Painters & Artisans Gallery in Londonderry.

The Long Trail passes just outside Manchester Village. Hikers can take the 6-mile round trip to the summit of Bromley Mountain, or hike XVEXXSR ǻVIXS[IV ERH XLI VSGO SYXGVST SJ

Spruce Peak. Another option is the Old Rootville Road trail from Route 30 in Manchester Center leading to Prospect Rock.

There are dozens of arts opportunities in Bennington and eastward along Route 9, the Molly Stark Byway. Catch a show at Oldcastle Theater, visit Robert Frost’s memorial, get a bird’s-eye view from Bennington Monument (the tallest structure in Vermont) and tour the Bennington Center for the Arts & Covered Bridge Museum.

nyone who knows opera, or theater in general, is amazed that the Opera Company of Middlebury can put on such elaborate programs with a 20-piece orchestra and a cast of 26 — as is the case with Verdi‘s “Macbeth.” To assemble such a large cast and put them up for the three-week duration is RS WQEPP ǻRERGMEP JIEX JSV ER] GSQTER] OCM has managed by recruiting host families, who invite the cast (and occasionally an orchestra member), into their homes. While that is no small commitment, says production manager and overseer of the host program Mary 1SRKI] MXƶW E FIRIǻX XLEX KSIW FSXL ways.

“It is such a really great program,” Longey said in a recent break in her jammed-packed day. “Staying with a host family makes the singers feel at home in our community in a way that couldn’t be done otherwise. And while we only ask the hosts to provide a bedroom and kitchen for them to cook, almost all of our hosts are gracious and go way beyond what we ask. The host program started with the early productions a dozen years ago with much smaller casts. This year, with one of its largest casts ever, the company
