Turkey  Stearns  &  the  Detroit  Stars Cheated  and  mistreated,  but  never  defeated  â€”  they  had  will  and  skill,  KXVWOH DQG PXVFOH ÂżUH DQG GHVLUH intestinal  fortitude  and  the  right  at-­ titude. That’s  how  Larry  Lester  describes  the  players  of  baseball’s  Negro  leagues. Larry  is  one  of  America’s  fore-­ most  scholars  of  EODFN EDVHEDOO DQ eminent  writer-­re-­ searcher.  In  1994,  KH DQG 'LFN &ODUN combined  on  the  ³1HJUR /HDJXHV %RRN ´ D VHPLQDO statistical  study  of  the  players  and  WHDPV LQ WKH Âł$WODQWLV´ RI EODFN EDVH-­ ball. Larry  is  the  host  at  the  annual  SABR-­Jerry  Malloy  Negro  League  Conference,  held  for  each  of  the  last  17  years  in  a  city  that  has  a  compel-­ OLQJ KLVWRULFDO FRQQHFWLRQ WR EODFN baseball.  He’s  the  host  with  the  most,  presiding  with  humor,  wisdom  borne  RI H[SHULHQFH DQG VWXG\ WRWDO FRP-­ mitment  to  getting  Negro  league  players  and  teams  their  due. ,ÂśP MXVW EDFN IURP 'HWURLW VLWH of  this  year’s  conference,  where  I  listened  to  stimulating  research  pre-­ VHQWDWLRQV DERXW EODFN EDVHEDOO LQ Detroit  and  other  subjects,  attended  a  7LJHU 0DULQHUV JDPH ³¿HOG ZRUN´ DQG VSHQW LQWLPDWH WLPH ZLWK NLQGUHG spirits.  It’s  a  wonderful  conference. I  teach  a  course  at  Middlebury  Col-­ OHJH FDOOHG Âł6HJUHJDWLRQ LQ $PHULFD Baseball’s  Negro  Leagues,â€?  so  I  had  been  aware  of  the  Negro  Leagues  Committee  of  SABR  (Society  of  American  Baseball  Research),  but  had  never  attended  the  conference.  Now  I  try  never  to  miss  a  Jerry  Malloy,  though  I  did  just  last  sum-­ mer  when  we  were  out  of  the  coun-­ try  for  the  year.  That  conference  was  KHOG LQ 1HZDUN 1 - 7KH 1HZDUN Eagles  were  one  of  the  great  Negro  Leagues  teams,  defeating  the  Kansas  City  Monarchs  in  the  1946  World  Series,  just  before  integration.  Ma-­ jor  league  stars  Larry  Doby,  Monte  Irvin,  and  Don  Newcombe  all  started  out  with  the  Eagles. High  school  squads  build  steam  for  new  season Fall  campaigns  open  with  several  weekend  games By  ANDY  KIRKALDY ADDISON  COUNTY  â€”  Collec-­ tively  in  terms  of  wins  and  losses,  the  2013-­2014  sports  year  proved  to  be  memorable  for  Middlebury,  Mount  Abraham,  Otter  Valley  and  Vergennes  union  high  school  teams  and  athletes. At  least  one  local  squad  won  a  championship  in  each  of  the  fall,  winter  and  spring  seasons.  ,Q WKH IDOO 0RXQW $EH ÂżHOG KRFNH\ and  boys’  soccer  and  MUHS  football  all  climbed  the  mountain,  with  the  Tiger  11  posting  an  undefeated  cam-­ paign. Local  adult  tennis  teams  enjoyed  success MIDDLEBURY  â€”  Adult  tennis  teams  based  at  Middle-­ bury  Indoor  Tennis  enjoyed  what  MIT  owner  David  Ig-­ nat  called  â€œprobably  the  best  everâ€?  season  of  competition  in  Vermont  league  play  and  regional  competition  over  this  past  winter,  spring  and  sum-­ mer. Statewide,  MIT  teams  com-­ piled  a  76-­38  record,  while  HLJKW RI WKHP TXDOLÂżHG WR SOD\ for  New  England  titles  by  winning  their  divisions.
