Fall Guide Welcome

In many ways, fall is the time to say goodbye. It’s goodbye to the annual plants in our gardens, so long to summer vacations, and farewell to the green foliage that we welcomed when our trees budded out last spring.

But in many ways it is a spectacular goodbye — with fantastic fall foliage, invigorating cool mornings and a change to a new seasonal wardrobe.

Sure, there are the traditional putting-the-landscape to bed chores: it’s harvest season, hunting season, slaughtering season. It’s time to cut the hay, prepare the fields and brace yourself for winter.

But before you retreat, reap the benefits of your summer labors. It’s time to gather fruits from the trees, vegetables from the vines. It’s time for canning and preserving in attempt to savor these flavors well into the winter.

And it’s time to get out and have some fall fun.

Take a drive or hop on a bike and cruise into the hills. Absorb the colors of fall, rich enough to carry us through the whitewash of winter. Enjoy the fields and vistas, covered bridges and mountain gaps. Pick your own apples and pumpkins, and get lost in a corn maze.

Celebrate the natural bounty that attracted the earliest settlers to Vermont’s landscape.

Pop in for a coffee or mulled cider and browse through a quaint, downtown shop. Pick up a sandwich or sit down for a relaxing meal at one of the excellent local restaurants featuring local produce and pouring local taps.

Eat cider donuts.

Chat with storeowners, hear their passionate tales and dig into the reasons they are proud to call Addison County home.

Fall means apples & so much more

My husband arrived home one evening during the first week in September after a stop at the Middlebury Natural Foods Coop. He raised his arm in triumph, clutching the handle of a small brown paper bag filled with Macintosh apples and bearing the stamp of Shoreham’s Champlain Orchards.

“Vermont apples are back!” he announced joyfully.

This is one of the hallmarks of the changing seasons: We know summer is giving way to fall when we no longer have to purchase plastic bags of apples shipped in from the West Coast.

That our family marks the seasons partly by the availability of local apples says something about our eating habits, in which apples loom large.

My daughters are still too small and picky to push us into the league of some large families we know — particularly those with teenagers — who consume gallons of milk daily and spend thousands on groceries each month. But apples are the one food all of my daughters agree upon, so we do go through a staggering number of apples every week.

Our typical practice is to eat those apples sliced — a practice my husband developed

to cut down on apple waste, such as when a daughter asks for a “big” apple, takes three bites, and then leaves it sitting on the Lego

table for 24 hours. A bowl of sliced apples, served plain or with a side of peanut butter or sliced cheddar cheese, tends to insure

that what’s taken is fully consumed.

In these parts, local cider can be a bit of an obsession

By EMMA COTTON It’s fall. The temperature is dropping, flannels are becoming the requisite attire and many are developing a craving for a quintessential fall treat: apple cider. Of the many ways to enjoy cider — hot with a cinnamon stick, cold and fresh from the press — adults may crave their cider hard.

Hard cider — the juice of the apple that has been fermented to create alcohol — has been gaining traction with Vermonters for almost 30 years — ever since the Green Mountain State reintroduced the drink, which had completely vanished from American shelves for almost half a century, to the country.

First, a little history. Vermont’s love affair with cider dates back to the colonial era, when Ethan Allen was known for the “stonewall” — equal parts rum and cider — which is said to have provided some liquid courage when the Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775. By 1800, almost every farm in the state had an orchard, and by the early part of the 20th Century, the Boston Globe reported that the country’s largest apple orchard was located in Vermont.

And nationwide, hard cider was everywhere during the early years of this nation — it was cheap, plentiful, and sometimes safer to drink than water, especially as cities developed.

John Adams was even known to drink a tankard of the stuff with breakfast each morning to calm his stomach.

But that all changed when European immigrants brought over beer recipes, which were cheaper to make and yielded fast results.

In 1920, when Prohibition became a reality,

apples regained their reputation as the forbidden fruit, and those most dedicated to temperance burned their orchards to the ground. The apples that remained were grafted and mass produced for fresh eating, and the best cider apples either disappeared from the landscape or were forgotten. Hard cider was erased from the market for 60 years — until it was reinvented in a garage in Vermont.

Flash forward to 1991. A winemaker named Greg Failing was sitting in his two-car garage in Proctorsville, experimenting with apples.

He shopped his creations, which he’d poured into wine bottles, around to distributors, but no one would take them. One such naysayer advised Failing to put the cider in 12-ounce beer bottles. When he did, the drink began to sell. Failing named his company “Woodchuck.”

“That was a turning moment for hard cider,” said Ben Calvi, the general manager and cider maker at Woodchuck’s parent company, Vermont Hard Cider, now based in Middlebury.

“Ten years later, in 2001, Woodchuck was the first hard cider company to sell a million cases of cider and be nationally distributed.”

Now, Vermont has 17 established cideries that range from nationwide distributors, like Woodchuck, to local craft operations, like Citizen and Stowe Cider, to hyper-local and orchard-based operations like Shacksbury and Champlain Orchards, to the wine-like libation made at Eden Specialty Ciders. The category is expanding and growing, and at the same time, cider makers are bringing the craft back to its roots.

are made with common grocery store apples: Golden Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith and the likes. While those sweet ciders are popular, a different kind of cider, made with an emphasis on the apple and all its varieties and complexities. This often results in a drier, more complex taste that is on the rise — especially in Vermont. So first, Vermont reincarnated hard cider and claimed a spot on the national market. Now, Vermont is undergoing its second cider revolution: understanding the apple enough to make cider really good.

“Twenty years ago, the only kinds of cider Woodchuck made were the sweet ciders that are alternatives to beer,” Calvi said. “Still, 70 percent of ciders in the United States are like that, whether it’s Angry Orchard or Woodchuck or Smith and Forage or Strongbow. But 30 percent is not a small proportion, and that’s everything else. So you have drier ciders that are really bringing out the characteristics of the apple, with balanced acidity and sugar and tannin levels, so they’re more complex. If you (See Cider, Page 52)

A Story of Art: Gifts from the Collection of Lucinda Herrick and Charles S. Moffett ’67 September 5–December 10, 2017 Charles Moffett, Middlebury Class of 1967, was one of the most highly regarded world authorities on Impressionism. As a curator at such prestigious institutions as New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and as director of the Phillips Collection in D.C., he organized widely celebrated solo exhibitions of the works of Van Gogh, Manet, Monet, and Gauguin. He then served for sixteen years as Executive Vice President and Vice Chairman of Impressionist, Modern, and contemporary art at Sotheby’s. An inveterate collector of art of all periods and mediums with a particular interest in 19th-century European drawings, he and Lucinda Herrick, his widow, have given and bequeathed some seventy-five works of art to the Middlebury College Museum of Art. Those works, as varied and engaging as Moffett’s broad interests, are the subject of this fall’s exhibition, A Story of Art. Organized by students in a January 2017 course taught

by Assistant Professor of History of Art and Architecture Carrie Anderson, the exhibition includes drawings, photographs, paintings, sculpture, and ceramics dating from antiquity to the present day. While the selection reflects Moffett’s discerning and eclectic taste, it also examines broader issues of authorship, artistic identity, materiality, and temporality, drawing distinctions between studies for larger, more ambitious projects and works that are definitively finished.

A section of the exhibition devoted to Moffett’s life highlights his student days at the College, where he served as president of the Cinema Club was joint-chair of both the Student Educational Policy Committee and the Student Life Committee. There is also an impressive selection of many of the exhibition catalogues he produced.

Land and Lens: Photographers Envision the Environment September 15–December 10, 2017 Featuring seventy-one images spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, the works on view in Land and Lens: Photographers Envision the Environment, come primarily from the Museum’s rich holdings of historic and contemporary photography. Among the wide range of artists represented are historic figures Ansel Adams, Arthur Rothstein, Eliot Porter and Alfred Stieglitz, as well as many contemporaries. Among these Jamie Stillings, Richard Misrach, David Maisel, James Balog, and Edward Burtynsky are well known for their concerned image-making.

Land and Lens, which remains on view through Sunday, December 10, was curated by Kirsten Hoving, Professor of History of Art and Architecture, with the aid of numerous research assistants, interns, and students in her classes. With support from the Andrew J. Mellon Foundation and the Digital Liberal Arts Initiative at Middlebury College, Professor Hoving has produced an innovative and comprehensive digital catalogue of the works on view. Accessible on Museum iPads or personal tablets and smartphones, the digital catalogue enhances understanding of the photographs through short videos and written descriptions of their respective photographic processes or environmental contexts, as well as discussions of their art historical importance. Selected works are interpreted through original music composed and performed by Middlebury College students.

Since its earliest days, photography has helped us comprehend the beauty, complexity, and fragility of the natural world. The works on display in Land and Lens reflect the deep commitment of their makers to recording and responding to the world around them. The breadth and diversity of photographs together with their digital interpretation provide visitors an opportunity to contemplate the wide variety of ways photographers have envisioned the environment.

Exacting attention to color, composition, and technique, paired with Patty’s penchant for high visual standards and whimsical designs, truly sets her work as a new standard within the field of American textile arts.

Tree expert will guide visitors through a foliage walk

By GAEN MURPHREE MIDDLEBURY — Celebrate “Fabulous Fall Foliage” with a walk along the Trail Around Middlebury, sponsored by the Middlebury Area Land Trust. This hour-and-a half walk will be led by tree expert Tim Parsons, Middlebury College’s Landscape Horticulturist.

For Parsons, who is also a Vermont Certified Horticulturist and certified by the International Society of Aboriculture, fall foliage speaks to the tree’s life cycle.

“What I find fascinating about why trees turn is it’s the last ditch effort to wring every little piece of food out of their leaves that they can,” Parsons said. “You are seeing leaves turn because they’re breaking down the chlorophyll to convert them into sugars to use as food for next year.”

Trees mark time differently, Parsons noted, and this year’s fall display is a response to growing conditions a year ago. He said that 2017 would be an early and “inconsistent” fall because trees are responding to the 2016 drought. He noted that by late August, trees on Snake Mountain on the Weybridge/Bridport border and elsewhere around Addison County were already beginning to turn.

“They didn’t grow as well last year because of the drought. So we’re seeing the stress this year,” he said.

Meet at the Franklin Environmental Center Family Weekend, but public is welcome the clayplain-oak-hickory forest that once covered much of the lower elevations of the Champlain Valley. The walk will pass through a “phenology” research site (phenology is the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena), where Middlebury biologists are studying the timing of trees’ spring flowering and budding, in part to track global warming. Along the trail, participants will get to see mixed stands of native trees, including shagbark hickory, butternut, hackberry and, of course, maple.

The foliage hike will also pass by the college’s composting operation, where dining hall scraps get turned into over 400 yards of compost a year, used to nurture campus plants.

Parsons also hopes to show participants a 300-year-old burr oak near the Mahaney Center that Parsons estimates is about 60 feet tall and 90 feet wide. Parsons believes it was a “witness tree,” left to mark property boundaries.

Asked why we never tire of watching fall foliage, Parsons revealed a personal connection to the annual bud to blaze pageant.

“For me it’s the end of a season,” Parsons said. “I don’t ever pay attention to New Year’s Day. My year starts in April when buds are starting to leaf out. And my year kind of ends when the leaves are gone.

Then, like a bear, I kind of hibernate all winter and then you come back into it. You kind of ebb and flow like a tree.”

Middlebury gets spooky as Halloween draws near MIDDLEBURY — Better practice your cackle, dig out your best wig, find a vessel to collect treats within and head downtown on Sunday, Oct. 29. Yet again, the Better Middlebury Partnership will bring an outstanding Halloween event for kids of all ages and adults to the town of Middlebury.

Hay bales, festive games, face painting and costumes will decorate the town green for the tenth annual Middlebury Spooktacular. Rain or shine, the green will be alive with music, dancing, costumes and tasty treats like cider donuts, loved by all ages.

Festivities will kick off at 1 p.m. and will conclude with a children’s trick-ortreat parade along Main Street led by the legendary Spooktacular Witch.

at 2:30 p.m. Accompanied by parents and Spooktacular volunteers, the procession will cross to the Post Office and continue along Main Street to Cannon Park, where the parade will cross and go back up the street to the town green.

So, start planning your costume and get your candy bags ready.

Spooktacular is an annual event hosted by the Better Middlebury Partnership, a non-profit community organization, working to support initiatives to make Middlebury a better place to live, work and play. Spooktacular is supported by BMP members as well as this year’s sponsors, Neat Repeats and the National Bank of Middlebury.

Fall Foliage Road Trips Ripton/Lincoln Tour — 1 Hour: From Middlebury, travel south on Route 7.

East on Route 125, passing the Waybury Inn. Turn left at the Ripton Country Store and follow this road north to Lincoln (take your time, part of this stretch is a dirt road).

Head west out of Lincoln down the mountain to Route 17. Travel Route 17 west through the quaint village of Bristol (where you may like to stop for lunch at a variety of dining establishments) and on to Route 7. Chimney Point Drive — 2 Hours: Leaving Middlebury, take Route 125 west to Chimney Point, the site of the new Champlain Bridge, finished November 2011. A short trip across the bridge to Crown Point in New York will offer great views back to Vermont, and is a great place for a picnic or tour around a major historic landmark. Another stop along this route is the nearby DAR John Strong Mansion Museum and State Park.

Take Route 17 east to Addison, where you will pick up Route 22A and head north into Vergennes, the smallest city in the United States. Note: Vergennes has some of the most interesting buildings in Victorian architecture. If you have time, get out of your car, wander in the Bixby Memorial Library on Main Street, and gaze up at the glass ceiling in the center of the building.

In Vergennes, take Monkton Road east. Cross Route 7 and continue east to the village of Monkton Ridge. At Monkton Ridge turn right onto Bristol Monkton Road, heading south, and continue to Bristol. In Bristol take Route 17 west to Route 7 and head south on Route 7 back to Middlebury.

Addison Independent Drop-In Brewing is Middlebury’s small, independent, locally owned brewery, and is home to The American Brewers Guild Brewing School. We are open 7 days a week serving sample flights, pints, and selling both cans and growlers of our beer to go.

Our flagship beers Sunshine & Hoppiness, Heart of Lothian, and Red Dwarf are available year-round, as well as several other of our fantastic recipes by Brewmaster Steve Parkes.

Route 125 east through East Middlebury and Ripton, passing the Robert Frost Wayside Recreation Area, the famous Middlebury College Bread Loaf campus, crossing over the Middlebury Gap (elevation 2,149 feet). Proceed down the mountain (also known as the Robert Frost Memorial Drive), into the town of Hancock.

Take Route 100 north through the town of Granville, watching on your left for the beautiful Moss Glen Falls. Continue north into Waitsfield, where you will pick up Route 17, and follow it west over the Appalachian Gap (elevation 2,365 feet). When you get to the bottom of the other side, you’ll take a left and Route 17 and Route 116 will run together for several miles, including through the village of Bristol. Just past the village, Route 116 peels off south but you should say on Route 17 westbound through New Haven until you come to Route 7. Take Route 7 south back to Middlebury.

Ancient sport of Atlatl soars into Addison Sept. 22-24th

ADDISON — The 22nd Annual Northeastern Open Atlatl Championship at the Chimney Point State Historic Site in Addison will be Sept. 22-24. This ancient spearthrowing tool competition is a highlight of Vermont Archaeology Month. The event also includes workshops on Friday and Sunday.

On Saturday, the Chimney Point field on the shore of Lake Champlain becomes a competition ground. Contestants from all over New England and New York use an atlatl to test their prowess in accuracy and distance by throwing at a variety of targets. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors are invited to try their hand at flint-knapping (making tools out of stone) with expert Barry Keegan or learn about Woodland pottery with Charlie Paquin. Thunderbird Atlatl will demonstrate the skills needed to accurately throw the atlatl. Archaeology experts will be on hand to look at artifacts or photos of artifacts that people bring for identification from noon to 2 p.m.

Saturday’s competition starts with registration at 10:30 a.m., the International

TINTYPE ARTIST AT ROKEBY

Rokeby has talks on plants, autographs, tintype on tap FERRISBURGH — The Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh has three events scheduled for this fall, in addition to their usual display on the Underground Railroad and the history of the Robinson Family. Admission to these talks are $2 per program or free with museum admission.

First there is “Eliza Marsh’s Book of Sentiments” on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. Brandon resident Eliza Marsh had an unusual hobby — she collected the autographs of leading abolitionists in the 1840s. Though her autograph book has disappeared, historian Kevin Thornton discovered her project and will share his research on her life and labor.

Another talk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m., with Robert Popp discusses “Rare and Unusual Vermont

Plants.” Botanist Popp tracks and inventories rare and unusual plants for Vermont’s Department of Fish and Wildlife. Species may be rare because they have particular habitat requirements, are subject to habitat loss, are at the edge of their range, or are vulnerable to disturbance or collection.

His talk reminds us of the Robinsons’ deep interest in natural history.

Tintype artist Jeff Howlett will bring his talents to the Rokeby on Sunday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., to share with guests. Howlett, a professional photographer, has perfected the art of making tintypes — early photographs made on small rectangles of metal.

He’ll be at the Rokeby offering his services and showing folks how it was done in the old days. Come and have your picture made. Tintypes will cost $50 each.

Which explains why our refrigerator’s fruit drawer is usually full-to-groaning with apples.

In an effort to address this apple consumption, we planted five heritage apple trees in our backyard last spring. To keep our costs low, we purchased rootstock instead of older trees; now, almost six months later, our apple trees stand about as tall as me (not very tall), and have sprouted several branches. We expect them to begin producing fruit in three years or so.

Side note: Time and patience seem to be the rule when it comes to growing one’s own fruit. My blueberry bushes, planted two years ago, continue to yield only a handful of berries every summer despite my vigilant care. When I inquire about other blueberry bushes that I see — bushes that produce vast quantities of fruit despite apparent neglect — the answer is almost always, “Oh, those bushes are over 20 years old now.”

While we wait for our own apple trees to reward us with fruit, we delight in the advent of our local apple season, which stretches from approximately early September until Thanksgiving, depending on the year.

The benefits of local apples are freshness (of course), and variety. I’m not much of a Macintosh or Granny Smith girl, so once the local apples come in I luxuriate in the dizzying array of options: Paula Red, Ginger Gold, Empire, Macoun, Honey Crisp, and more.

And then there’s the personal component: the pleasure that comes from supporting the labor of people you know. They know us at our closest local orchard, Happy Valley, so when our family arrived on opening day this year we were greeted with exclamations over how much our girls had grown since last year, and inquiries after my parents. “Well, it’s really apple season now that you’re here!” we were told.

Similarly, we know the owners of Champlain Orchards, whose children attend preschool and homeschool alongside our own, and who are very generous about donating apples to my daughter’s preschool. When we buy their apples at the orchard or the co-op, we know that we’re supporting a lovely family. There’s no comparison between this sort of relationship with our food producers, and the anonymous airlifted apples in plastic that we’re forced to buy in the winter.

It may be that its fleeting nature is part of what makes apple season so special. But then, the more I think about fall, the more I realize that the entire season is a brief flash of beauty before saying goodbye.

Consider the geese. One of the great delights of moving into our house last year was realizing, come fall, that we are located right under a major Canada geese flyway. All fall, regal, honking Vs of geese pass overhead, creating stunning scenes like the one I witnessed the other morning when my daughter and I went out at 6 a.m. to feed our poultry: The sun was

rising and staining the eastern clouds red while the moon still hung in the deep blue western sky, when a flock of geese flew directly over us. We waved them south as they passed beneath the moon, saying goodbye for another season.

Similarly, the two monarch caterpillars that my daughters found in our field will leave us soon. We put them in a tank and fed them milkweed until they wove the surprisingly strong filaments to anchor themselves to a surface (one attached to a leaf, one to the side of the tank), shed their skin, and encased themselves in green-and-gold chrysalises. In just a few days, if all goes well inside, they’ll emerge as monarch butterflies. Then, we’ll release them so that they can begin their long migration down to Mexico. As with the geese, we’ll wave goodbye and wish them well.

And what is Vermont’s celebrated autumn foliage, if not another goodbye — the ultimate blaze of glory before the fall?

The interesting thing is that fall — this season of many goodbyes — doesn’t seem to invoke sadness in many people.

On the contrary, an informal poll of family and friends reveals that many cite fall as their favorite season. They feel that fall carries with it the sense of a fresh start.

How can this be? How are we able to do in fall what we struggle to do in the rest of life: To be present in the moment? To relish the apples without weeping over the harvest’s end? To gasp over the beauty of the geese, the monarch butterflies, and the foliage without mourning their departure?

Being present in the present is not easy for us humans. As Wendell Berry wrote in his 2015 essay collection, “Our Only World”: There is in fact much at hand and in reach that is good, useful, encouraging, and full of promise, although we seem less and less inclined to attend to or value what is at hand. We are always ready to set aside our present life, even our present happiness, to peruse the menu of future exterminations. If the future is threatened by the present, which it undoubtedly is, then the present is more threatened, and often is annihilated, by the future.

“Oh, oh, oh,” cry the funerary experts, looking ahead through their black veils.

“Life as we know it soon will end. If the governments don’t stop us, we’re going to destroy the world. The time is coming when we will have to do something to save the world. The time is coming when it will be too late to save the world. Oh, oh, oh.”

If that is the way our minds are afflicted, we and our world are dead already. The present is going by and we are not in it.

——— Perhaps, as we revel in fall, we can learn something about appreciating the present goodness throughout the year.

“MUDDY TOES TERRARIUMS” AT ART ON MAIN

Bristol is the place to go for a diverse variety of art BRISTOL — Bristol’s downtown gallery Art on Main will stage an exhibition this fall called “Bringing the Outside In. Running Oct. 13-Nov. 12, the show will feature three different artisans — three different ways of interacting with the natural world.

Susan Goldstein, Krista Cheney and Aurora Davidson all work directly with live natural materials — what they each do with them is unique to their own particular curiosity and artistic vision.

Susan Goldstein, through her “Muddy Toes Terrariums,” creates small, threedimensional worlds inside glass containers. They range from small hand-blown glass globes with artfully place succulents, rocks, moss and other natural elements to large, window-like containers that bring the outside in for a more intimate view.

Krista Cheney is a fine-art photographer who approaches her subjects a bit like a mad scientist — exploring the unpredictable interaction of flowers and frozen water and ultimately creating beautiful, mysterious, other-worldly images of plants and flowers.

Aurora Davidson, who’s company is Green Angel Arts, collects natural materials and combines them to make a kind

of botanical collage that she then photographs. Scenes of fields, forests and mountains shine from her images with the intimacy of the materials themselves — like walking through a meadow to gaze at a view. The original pieces, which are too fragile to display and sell, are kept safely in a climate-controlled space.

Art on Main, at 25 Main St., will hold a reception with these three artists on Friday, Oct. 13, from 5-7 p.m. You can meet Susan, Krista and Aurora there and talk about their work.

‘Better L8 then Never Car Show’ is rolling into Bristol BRISTOL — The last full weekend of September will be a busy one in Bristol as two big events will bring visitors and area residents to downtown Bristol.

The Bristol Harvest Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, on the town green and the Better L8 Than Never Car Show will be held the next day, Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Bristol Recreation Field.

The 19th annual Bristol Harvest Festival is co-hosted by the Addison County Chamber and the Bristol Recreation Department. Activities are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. when the town green will come alive with at least 65 crafters and vendors, an apple pie contest, demonstrations and live musical entertainment on the bandstand throughout the day.

Bands schedule to perform are as follows: 10 a.m.: Harvest Festival Band 11 a.m.: Erin Cassels-Brown 12 noon: The County Down

1 p.m.: Snake Mountain Bluegrass 2 p.m.: Daddy Long Legs 3 p.m.: West Road Rockers Among the vendors will be Art on Main, the local nonprofit gallery that holds its annual Fall Fundraiser under a tent at the Bristol Harvest Festival. More than 200 vehicles are expected, plus there will be a live DJ spinnin’ stacks of wax (as they say), vendors, kids’ activities, raffles, a bake sale and more. One fun event scheduled is a competitive piston toss.

Last year the car show welcomed a record-setting 260 vintage and customized vehicles and an estimated 500 spectators.

At the show, vehicles are displayed by make, model and year and judged on a variety of categories.

Trophies will be awarded to the Top 30 vehicles in the car show. Admission for spectators is free (donations are accepted for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta) and vehicle registration is $20 per vehicle.

LAND OF APPLES

It’s not surprising that many of the cideries have started in the Champlain Valley. With its farming tradition and relatively mild climate, groves of apples for eating have grown up here, so locals are already familiar with how to grow and harvest this popular fruit.

One of these apple growers turned cider makers is Champlain Orchards, which is located not far from the lake in Shoreham.

Company founder Bill Suhr explained that in 2008 Champlain Orchards began to experiment with Honeycrisp ice cider.

“We have continued to expand our offerings annually as our cidery has grown,” he said. “We now have a dedicated cidery staff on farm which carefully creates our ciders.”

What separates Champlain Orchards is its 40 acres dedicated to cider production, which includes more than 30 varieties of cider-specific apples, from Dabinet to Brown Snout to Kingston Black, Suhr said.

The soil in this part of the orchard is a mix of Vergennes clay and Farmington loam soil, which lends a certain terroir to the ciders.

“That’s the difference — we’re locally grown, not just produced,” Suhr said. “These are true Addison County apples. People who take home our ciders are supporting a 250acre, land-trusted farm that will be here for years to come.

LOST AND FOUND APPLES

And then there’s Shacksbury: a growing, four-year-old cidery started on a farm in Shoreham and now based out of the Kennedy

LOCALLY GROWN APPLES have been used to create delicious hard cider for hundreds of years.

Founders Colin Davis and David Dolginow spend much of the fall foraging for “lost” apples, or apples growing on trees that evolved after Vermont’s colonial-age cider boom. (We know — flannel-clad cider makers traipsing through the woods in search of ancient apple trees — the only way it could get more “Vermont” is if they were drinking maple syrup along the way.)

The charming mission comes with another motive: to educate consumers about the fruit’s rich history.

Back in the colonial era, apple trees were planted with seeds (instead of the cloning and grafting that mark today’s commercial practices). But apple seeds do not reproduce the exact same fruit as the tree from which they came. The seeds of a McIntosh apple will not yield more McIntosh apples — they’ll produce something entirely different. When Europeans first brought apple seeds on their maiden voyages to North America, they planted millions of trees, and no two were alike.

Farmers came to understand the diversity of apples. They knew which varieties to use for

sauce, for pie, for cider.

Eventually, they identified the best baking apples and the best apples for fresh eating, and they cloned these species, reproducing them until the rest of the apples fell away and were forgotten. The result? Seven varieties now dominate the grocery store apple market, and many Americans would hesitate to try anything else.

“It’s a lost way of thinking about apples,” Davis says. “The cider that’s most interesting to us is expressive of the fruit.” Shacksbury has now made many ciders from these heirloom varieties, collecting crates of apples to make small, five-gallon ferments that they send to their cider club members. This drink is also available at Shacksbury’s new tasting room at 11 Main St., Vergennes — north side of the building. The tasting room, which is already accepting visitors Thursday through Saturday, will host a grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2-8 p.m., where there will be music and food, in addition to cider.

And Vermont is the perfect place to conduct such project. While orchards were once prolific throughout New England, Vermont’s continuous rural landscape has created space for trees to continue to reproduce, creating new, different varieties. Davis says the team samples apples from about 2,000 trees each fall.

“I think anyone who hikes around Vermont has noticed that there’s wild apple trees everywhere,” he says. And for those who want to discover apples themselves, he adds: “I would encourage people, if they walk by an apple tree in October or November, to try one.”

Brandon gets ready for the Harvest People surge BRANDON — It’s almost time to build your own “Harvest Person.” That’s one of the draws at the annual Brandon HarvestFest, which, as always, will take place the Sunday before Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 1 this year.

moved from Central Park to Estabrook Park north of the village just west of Route 7. It’s still at the usual time — 1-4 p.m.

At HarvestFest, the Brandon Chamber of Commerce supplies all materials, accessories and instruction on how to make your very own “Harvest Person” or “Leaf Person.” Event-goers choose clothes, a hat, shoes and embellishments to personalize their own “Person.” Volunteers help with the finishing touches.

This event is a great way for people to be creative and let imaginations run wild.

The first “Harvest Person” per family is free of charge. After that, they are only $5 each.

Besides Harvest People-making, the event includes hayrides, pumpkins, family fun and activities for both kids and adults.

The Neshobe PTO and the Brandon Recreation Department are providing a lot of the organization for this year’s event.
