Tiger girls’ soccer looks to continue moving forward By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer team this spring will be looking to build on a five-win season that was the program’s two-decade high water mark — and, just maybe, to do some playoff damage. Like the Tiger girls’ basketball and softball programs, MUHS girls’ soccer for the next two academic years will compete in Division II. That means first-round matchups with

powerhouses like Champlain Valley will not be in the cards, and that some new foes will dot the Tigers’ non-league schedule. “It’s nice to be in the division we really should be in,” coach Wendy Leeds said. “It will be fun to see some new teams. It will be mentally really good for the girls to come in with absolutely no preconceptions about who this team is and what they can do.” In the preseason, Leeds was also

looking forward to seeing what her team can do. Although a few valuable players received diplomas in June, the Tigers were a deep team last season and have been reinforced by more solid talent at all positions. And, Leeds said, the team developed unity and communication almost immediately. “To build from where we came in is exciting,” she said. “It usually takes a few weeks to create that kind of a climate or that kind of a culture,

and they’ve come in with it.” The most obvious question is in net, but Leeds believe sophomore Molly Campbell, who has club as well as JV experience, can step in successfully behind what she believes will be a solid defense. Junior Jennifer Cyr will press for playing time in goal as well. Leeds plans to start the season with four defenders, with veteran seniors Sophia Abdul Sater and Kate DaPolito in the middle and speedy

sophomores Annina Hare and Claire Armstrong on the flanks. Juniors Jesse Wulfman and Marvie Avery could also step into the defense. Leeds also intends to deploy four midfielders, probably pairing sophomore Kelsey Smith and senior Sara Boe in the middle, with junior Katie Holmes rotating in to spell both of them. Smith can also drop back and give the central defenders a breather, Leeds said. Seniors Emily Robinson and Sophie Ryan are the probable starters outside, with junior Julia Rosenberg (when she recovers from an illness), sophomore Julia Vorsteveld, senior Anna Roy and Avery also available at flank midfield. In 2012 Leeds platooned players in the two forward spots, and there will be a rotation on the front line rotation again this year. Juniors Katherine Townsend and Abby Lane, senior Sophie McKeever-Parkes, sophomore Faith Isham, and, when she recovers from a preseason injury, senior Gabrielle Ingenthron are all in the mix at striker. Leeds sees better ball control and passing as a team strength, but wants her team to use those fresh legs to be more aggressive near the goal. “We need to be more attack-minded in the final third, especially in the box,” she said. Overall, Leeds liked what she saw heading into the season. “If we can build from here, I am really optimistic,” she said.

First-year MUHS boys’ soccer coach to head new-look program By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — In 2012, the MUHS boys’ soccer squad earned the No. 1 seed in Division I with a 14-2 record and reached the semifinal round before falling, giving longtime coach Doc Seubert an appropriate farewell. Having Bret Weekes, an assistant to Seubert for the past four years, take over as the head coach is not the only change for the program this fall: Eleven seniors, many of them starters, graduated from that 2012 team. During the preseason, Weekes acknowledged what everybody knew a year ago would be the case. “It’s a new look, and a very young Middlebury Union High School Boys’ Varsity Soccer Date Opponent/Event Time 9/4 Colchester 4:30 p.m. 9/7 @ U-32 10 a.m. 9/10 Stowe 4:30 p.m. 9/13 @ CVU 4:30 p.m. 9/16 Missisquoi 4:30 p.m. 9/19 J.P. squad. I’ve been very happy with the energy they’ve had,” he said. But the new program head was by no means singing the blues. “Our young leaders are stepping up,” Weekes said. “We’re going to learn on the job.” Several key players return. Senior Max Livingstone-Peters will move from starting at outside defense to one of two defensive midfield positions, while another senior who saw plenty of time off the bench, Rio McCarty, will start as one of three offensive midfielders. Versatile junior Oliver Clark played a variety of roles last year, and Weekes has placed him as a flank defender this fall, while junior midfielder Calder Birdsey moves into a starting offensive midfield role. Senior Cole Bennett saw some time at defense a year ago and will be one of two starters at central defense this season. Newcomers fill out the roster. Junior Bo Tran takes over in goal, and Weekes believes his athleticism and fearless attitude will make up for lack of varsity experience. Sophomore Wilder Perera will back up Tran. Sophomore Burke Weekes will join Bennett in the middle of the defense, and Matias Van Order Gonzalez was set as the other flank defender. Senior Jake Codding and junior Jake Lawson are also available in the back. Junior Jerry Staret will pair with Livingstone-Peters at defensive midfield, and sophomore Drew Barnicle

will be the third offensive midfielder as the season opens. Other midfielders ready to step in are juniors Bob Avery and Luke Benz and freshmen Duncan McCabe and Sullivan Swearingen. Junior Evan Ryan will line up as

the Tigers’ target forward up front, and freshman Lucas Pyle or Birdsey could spell him there. Offense and speed should be pluses, Weekes said. “I feel very good about our ball skills in the attacking and midfield

area,” he said. “And our pace is good as well … I’m not concerned about players running by us in the defense.” If the defense gels as Weekes hopes, he thinks the rebuilt Tigers will hold their own.

Athletic MUHS football team to rely on hurry-up offense, speed By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — No, the Middlebury Union High School football team is not changing its basic philosophy this fall. Fans of Coach Dennis Smith’s Tigers can expect to see three running backs line up behind the quarterback as the team tries to impose a ground game on its Division I opponents. That formula has led to postseason appearances year after year, even if titles have been elusive since 2002. “We’re Middlebury, and we’re going to be doing what we’ve been

doing,” Smith said. “We’re going to stick with what keeps getting us in the playoffs. And hopefully we’ll get over that hump from there.” But there will be one new wrinkle: The Tigers will introduce a no-huddle look with signals coming in from the sideline. Smith said that hurry-up approach should wear down opponents, prevent them from making substitutions, and allow the Tigers to dictate the pace of games. It does not mean they will become pass-happy, however, like other Vermont teams that have adopted the no-

huddle strategy. “No-huddle doesn’t mean you’re a throwing team,” Smith said. Smith was happy with the Tigers’ offseason work ethic, and how quickly they took to the new tactics. They’ve come in and worked hard, and they’ve picked things up very well,” he said. “I’m ahead of where I thought I would be in terms of installing new stuff with the no-huddle and all signals. They’re there to work, they’re listening, and they get along real well.” Smith will use a deep corps of backs

to make the approach work. Junior quarterback Austin Robinson will do some of the ballcarrying and hand off to senior fullback Jakob Trautwein or one of four running backs: senior Nick Felkl or juniors Sam Smith, Cullen Hathaway and Bobby Ritter. Opening holes will be center Samuel Messenger, guards Josh Stearns and Holden Yildirim, and tackles Sam Usilton and James Ploof. Junior Justin Stone and senior Josiah Benoit will rotate at tight and split ends, and Ritter or junior Connor Quinn could also line up wide.

On the other side of the line of scrimmage, Trautwein is the nose tackle, juniors Sam Killorin and Lucas Plouffe are the defensive tackles, and Usilton and Stone the ends. Stearns and Nicholas Audet are the top linebackers, Ritter and Smith the corners, and Robinson and senior Nathan Peck the starting safeties, Coach Smith said. They will be spelled frequently on both sides of the ball: Smith said the team has depth. “I feel we can rotate guys and not lose much this year, offensively or

defensively,” he said. The Tigers schedule, as always is tough, notably early on. They opened at home with Essex, which defeated them on the road last fall, and threetime defending champion Hartford, with 2012 playoff teams Colchester and Rutland up next. “We’ll learn a lot the first four or five weeks. Our schedule doesn’t soften up,” Smith said. “But we’ll take on anybody. We don’t worry about that. You’ve got to take them all on eventually. We look forward to the challenge.”

Cross country blends veterans, newcomers By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — After a number of runners graduated from MUHS boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams that each finished sixth in Division II a year ago, Coach Chas Lyons will be looking to youngsters to step up and fill in some of the gaps. “We have a very young squad,” Lyons said. The boys’ team does have more depth, and boasts two seniors who broke 20 minutes at the state championship meet: Max Moulton, who was sixth in D-II, and Sam Ferguson. “Max Moulton will be our top runner. Sam Ferguson will be our next fastest,” Lyons said. Junior Matt Becker was the next Tiger across the finish line at the 2012 state meet. After that trio, Lyons will look to a group of sophomores, two of whom finished among the Tigers’ top seven at the state meet, Matt Ferguson (fifth) and Nikhil Plouffe (seventh). “From there you’re looking at … freshmen from last year that are moving up to sophomores,” Lyons said. “Those guys will probably step up quite a bit.” That group also includes James Whitley, Dave Dregallo and Kyle Pecsok. There are fewer female runners on the MUHS team, and fewer returning scorers. But the top two are back, sophomores Emily Fleming and Dan-

ielle Morris, and Lyons expects junior CareyAnne Howlett to improve. “CareyAnne Howlett returns as captain for us. I think she’ll be a good backbone in the middle portion of the group,” Lyons said. Freshmen Indigo Wood and Allison Cherrier are among those who could join the scoring group, he said. “There is some young talent that is supposedly strong,” Lyons said. “They’re probably going to step right up as well.” And, as he noted, there are always surprises. “We have several new members of the team that have not proven themselves that are coming in as sophomores and juniors,” Lyons said. “Someone always comes out of the woodwork, so I hope we have a stronger guys’ team and girls’ team for that.” The team’s Middlebury Invitational will again be held at Rikert Nordic Center, in the afternoon so as not to conflict with Homecoming Weekend’s other scheduled athletic events on Sept. 28. “Being Homecoming Weekend we want to maximize everyone’s viewing potential,” Lyons said. As usual, the coach is seeing the work ethic and positive attitude that make his job a pleasure. “You can never repeat that enough,” Lyons said. “They’re always a great bunch.”

New coach aiming for field hockey bounce-back By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — The MUHS field program has had its ups and downs the past two years, going from 2011’s Division I title to a one-win season after heavy graduation losses. But with a few veterans back and an infusion of athletes from a successful 2012 JV team, new coach Megan Sears — who led that eightwin JV squad — said she is at least “cautiously optimistic” about 2013. “I’m really excited about the possible combinations on the field. And I think with the right combinations we could be really successful,” Sears said. “I don’t want to get too excited, but I’m definitely excited about this bunch. And they’re really a great group of girls.” Four players return who were full-time starters a year ago. Senior Paige Viens was the team’s leading scorer and is back at right wing, and junior Baily Ryan is back in the goal. Two seniors, Kate Knowles and Kiera Kirkaldy, will play center and right midfield in some configuration. Knowles moves back from the front line and could start in the middle, while Kirkaldy played on the right side a year ago but could also play centrally. Sears said the two will have a lot of freedom to switch. Several other players saw varsity action in 2012. Junior Megann Watkins started part-time at midfield and defense and will take over at center back, junior Alli White was a JV call-up and will start at left defense, senior Jess Brisson will share time at right defense, sophomore Sara Kelley will move into the starting line-up at left wing, and sophomore Mikayla Humiston will back up the front line. Newcomers will round out the starting lineup. Sophomores Lauren Bartlett and Makayla Foster are the starting inners, and junior Har-

ley Downey-Teachout will also see plenty of action up front. Sears believes the Tigers will score goals this fall. “I see our forward line being really strong this year. We have four, six actually, really great forward line players,” she said. Sophomore first-year field hockey player Tajah Marsden’s ice hockey skills translated quickly to grass, and Sears said she will play left middie. Junior Emma Snyder-White will spell the midfielders, who Sears said have the skills and quickness across the board to create plenty of opportunities for the offense.

“Ultimately what will make us most successful is being able to transition the ball,” she said. Sophomore Alex Whipple is the final member of the team, and could well earn the final starting spot, at right back. Sears said all her defenders had strong sticks in the circle, while Ryan “definitely has grown” in goal. In the preseason, Sears said even the players commented they seemed to be playing as a unit and communicating well. “If we just keep that up and stay focused, the season could be really fun,” she said.

Eagle field hockey setting its sights high By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham field hockey team returned to prominence in 2012, winning 10 times and contending for a Division II title after a few leaner seasons. Although the Eagles will have to rebuild in the back, Coach Mary Stetson is optimistic her team can again make some noise in the D-I Metro Conference and then the D-II postseason. “We’re trying to go as deep as we can into the postseason and to be competitive every time out in the Metro,” Stetson said. To reach the long-range goal of being a strong tournament team, Stetson said the first step for the Eagles

will be learning to play their best on a daily basis against challenging competition. “Trying to be that competitive team every time we play is that first goal,” she said. It helps that the Eagles entire midfield returns intact: Seniors Madi Wood, Sam Reiss and Sara Cousino all started in 2012, and Wood and Reiss are three-year starters. Versatile juniors Olivia Scott and Gabrielle Ryan will spell them if necessary. Three players who either started last fall or saw major minutes on the front line also return: seniors Hailey Sayles, Sam Driscoll and Gabrielle Schlein. Juniors Bailey Sherwin

and Kennady Roy will join them up front, and Scott will also see time on the attack, Stetson said. Senior Anna Thompson returns to anchor the defense, where senior Melinda Lathrop and juniors Courtney Panton, Vanessa Malloy and Jen Gordon will join her. Ryan could also see action in the back. How well that group gels will be critical, Stetson said. “Our defense is very new in front of the goalkeepers, so it’s going to be that communication,” she said. For the first time in four years, the goalkeeper will be also be new — all-star and four-year starter Lizzie Huizenga graduated. In the preseason, senior Jessica Martell and

sophomore Danielle Morse were sharing the load in the cage. Stetson expects all the Eagles to see time. “Everyone’s going to have to contribute. We’re not a huge squad,” she said. Quickness should be an asset, especially when the Eagles hone their skills. “Our stick skills need to match that speed, and our passing needs to match that speed,” Stetson said. She is optimistic that will happen. “As a group they’re real cohesive, and they work hard. They’re looking to get better,” she said. “It’s been a fun preseason.”

MOUNT ABRAHAM UNION HIGH SCHOOL Coach optimistic for Eagle boys’ soccer By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — In 2012, the Mount Abraham boys’ soccer team shrugged off injuries to finish at .500 and reach the Division II semifinal round. Coach Mike Corey is optimistic — given a little better luck with health — his 2013 Eagles can do even better. “This is a team that will be very technical, have very good overall team speed. It will be heavy in experience,” Corey said. “It’s a mature group of young men. They have great team chemistry … They are incredibly dialed in and supportive of each other.” They also return a number of key players, including a goalie and defenders that cut their teeth last fall and should be a solid unit this season. Converted striker Ira Fisher, a senior, returns in goal with a year of experience, as do junior center backs Whit Lower and Gus Catlin. At flank back, senior Calvin Joos and junior Theo Weaver likewise have plenty of seasoning, and will also be asked to step into the attack at times. Sophomore Charlie Meyer

will back up the field players, and Nick Sczcecinski will be ready to step in for Fisher if needed. “Defense should be our strength this year,” Corey said. Skilled seniors Cale Thygesen and Aiden White-Pifer return to orchestrate the attack at midfield, where they will be joined in the starting lineup by sophomore Jackie Gorton, a part-time starter as a freshman. Seniors Turner Brett, Lucas Calzini and Logan Tow, and sophomores Cobi Badger and Tucker Paradee will spell the midfielders and at times the forwards. Seniors Ethan White, Sawyer Kamman and Rider MacCrellish will run up front, with sophomore Dylan Weaver ready to step in. The Eagles’ 4-3-3 formation is new, but Corey said they have learned it quickly. “They are very bright. We’ve covered a lot … and they’ve taken it in readily,” he said. Overall, Corey described himself as “very encouraged” entering the season. “I’m expecting a lot from this team,” he said. “It should be a step up from last year.”

Soccer team looking for next level By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham girls’ soccer team has been on the upswing, and Coach Dustin Corrigan expects more of the same this season. “We’ve kind of gotten a little better each year the last few years,” Corrigan said. “We’ve got a lot of girls who have really worked hard, done a lot in the offseason … It’s exciting, the potential in this group.” One strength should be experience. “The senior class has eight returning players, eight of whom have three or more years of varsity experience,” Corrigan said. A number of players from 2012’s undefeated JV team have also signed on. “There are some underclassmen who look like they are going to make some really big contributions,” Corrigan said. One player who fits each of those categories will start on the attack. Senior Meghan Livingston popped in a dozen goals in 2012, and joining her at striker in the Eagles’ base 4-4-2 formation will be talented freshman Ernesta McIntosh. Corrigan at times might run three up front, with juniors Stephanie White and Isabel Brennan and either senior Ashlie Fay or sopho-

more Zoe Cassels-Brown also available. Either Fay or CasselsBrown will start in goal, with that decision still pending during the preseason. Veterans will anchor the center of the Eagle midfield, senior M.K. Charnley and junior Amy Nault. Senior Melanie Rotax and sophomore Juniper Nardiello-Smith were the probable starters on the flanks, with seniors Quinn Gervia and Brittany Atkins, juniors Mary Kate Clark and Iris DuPont, and Brennan also in the mix. Senior Harlie Vincent and junior Reed Martin will start in central defense in the primary 4-4-2 set, with

senior Addy Campbell and sophomore Jesse McKean on the flanks. Atkins might step in at wing back if Corrigan goes with three defenders, and junior Kendra Thompson could also see time in the back. Which of several formations Corrigan deploys will depend on circumstances. “How good is the opponent? Are they going to play with two or three up top? The field matters. If it’s a narrow field it’s easier to go with three in the back,” Corrigan said. Producing consistently on the attack, which the Eagles did during the preseason, will be the key against what is a tougher schedule

this fall. “The real test will be if we can do that against a real quality opponent,” Corrigan said. “It’s a very competitive schedule this year. We

made it that way. There shouldn’t be any easy games. That’s a challenge for the girls … We’ll be more battle-hardened come playoffs this year.”

Mt. Abe/VUHS football team seeking playoff success

By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham/ Vergennes football team has earned one of four Division III playoff berths in each of the past two seasons, and with the postseason field expanded to eight this fall Coach Ernie Senecal believes a return to the playoffs is, while by no means assured, at least likely. “We should make the playoffs, but we’d like to set our sights higher this year. I think our goals are, No. 1, to have a winning season, No. 2, to host at least one playoff game,” he said. “Of course, we’d like to make it to the championship game, and ultimately to win it.” To reach those targets, the Eagles

will not change their basic offensive philosophy, although Senecal said some individual plays have been changed or discarded and others added within the framework. “We’ve gotten good production running out of the I, with a little bit of spread mixed in,” he said. “What’s worked for us is to run the football and play some pretty solid defense.” It helps those tactics that speedy senior tailback Tommy Lee Hodsden and bruising fullback Austin Lafayette both return to lug the ball. “We’ve got to match up (running backs) with anybody in D-3. We’ve got a great pair,” Senecal said. Junior Joey Payea moves up from the JV team to take over at quarter-

back, and Senecal said his passing ability and mobility in the pocket could add an extra dimension. “We might look to throw the football a little more this year,” he said. When the Eagles do throw, targets will include senior wide receivers Kyle Mailloux, Aaron Rowell and Mike White, and junior tight ends Tyrus Keith and Brandon Mansfield. The line returns one starter, senior Paul Sabourin at left tackle, and two players who saw plenty of snaps in 2012, junior guard Erik Eisenhower and sophomore guard Matt Mullin. Junior Derek Whitcomb takes over at center, and junior Ty Combs at right tackle. Senior Jason Hartman was set to start on the line, but suffered a

season-ending injury. Senecal said he likes the line’s quickness, and said he hopes a new zone-blocking scheme will also help open up holes for the backs. The defense will see some change, from a 5-2-4 to a 4-3-3 alignment. Lafayette and Mullin will start inside on the line, with sophomore Bradley Sturtevant spelling them. Sabourin and Keith are the ends, with Combs the top sub there. The inside linebackers are senior Josh Cyr and Eisenhower, with White and Mansfield on the outside. Junior Ethan Gendreau will see time filling in for the backers. Mailloux and Rowell are the top corners, and Hodsden the starting safety.

In all, Senecal liked what he saw heading into the season. “We have good quality football players,” he said. “We should be competitive in our division.”

By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — With a continued strong turnout to buoy both the girls’ and boys’ teams, Mount Abraham cross-country coaches Brent Crum and Vicki Wright are hoping for at least a modest step forward this season. “Our numbers are really good right now,” Crum said. On the boys’ side, that turnout includes six of the seven runners who competed for the Eagles at the 2012 state meet, all of them juniors, including Chris Carter, whose time of just over 20 minutes was more than two minutes faster than any of his teammates. “He’s done a summer of training, and he’s looking pretty fast. So I think he’s up for a good season,” Crum said. The other five are Robin Kuhns, Cullen Jemison, Nick Turner and Sam Daniels, all of whom scored points, and Matt Giles, who was the seventh Eagle across the finish line. “They will probably form the core of the boys’ varsity team,” Crum said. Crum said senior Josh Cousineau could earn one of the seven varsity positions, as could sophomore Eliot Brett or one of several freshmen. “It will be fun this year because, like last year, there’s going to be competition for those top seven varsity spots, which makes for a stronger cross-country team. I think we will be solidly in the mix in some of our smaller meets, and we will perform better than we have in some of the big invitationals,” Crum said. “So I’m re-

ally optimistic on a really successful season.” On the girls’ side, five of the top seven at the state meet return, including top finisher Natalie May, a senior and team leader. Junior Sarah Sodano and sophomores Genevieve Chiola and Laura Sundstrom also scored for the Eagles at the state meet, and sophomore Harmony Taggart ran for the team there. Wright expects senior Bakari Olivetti and junior S.J. Grundon, talented runners who missed the state meet, to be top-five runners, but Grundon, who had trouble staying healthy in 2012, was nursing an injury in late August. Wright also cited freshman Anna Iliff as one of several of the team’s younger runners who could emerge this fall. “There’s quite a few of them,” she said. “We’ll see where the others come in.” The group appears to have the approach to succeed, Wright said. “They’ve been working hard in practice, and really showing good leadership, too, especially Natalie and Bakari,” she said. Crum echoed that sentiment. “We have the best bunch of kids. Our cross-country runners, I don’t know if it’s like this at every school, we just have the greatest group of kids. They’re nice. They’re friendly. They’re supportive. They cheer everybody on. They’re the hard workers,” he said. “I’m psyched to have them all out.”

OTTER VALLEY UNION HIGH SCHOOL Otter cross country: Quality, not quantity By ANDY KIRKALDY BRANDON — The trend of low numbers continued this year for the Otter Valley cross-country team, but despite the lack of quantity Coach Jim Samler believes there is some quality among the two boys and three girls who signed up. Samler was also hoping to boost those numbers as school was opening. “I am scouring the halls for some new faces, but for now it’s pretty thin,” he said. Unless Samler’s recruiting strikes gold, the Otters will not reach the five-strong threshold on either the boys’ or girls’ side to score as a team at the Division II meet. Still, Samler expects some strong individual results. Junior Emmett Thurston and sophomore Jacob

Scarborough ran 20:30 and 20:38 on the challenging Thetford course at the 2012 D-II championship meet, right in the middle of a large pack of runners. Any improvement on those times could move them quickly up in the standings. “I think Emmett and Jake will do pretty well in the state this year,” Samler said. Sophomore Emma Cijka, the team’s lone female runner in 2012, gets some company this year: Former field hockey player Danarose Weaver, a senior, and freshman Maria Wiles signed on this fall. Samler sees potential. “The girls will hold their own,” he said. All five understand their results depend on their effort, Samler said. “Everyone is working hard in practice,” he said.

OTTER VALLEY UNION HIGH SCHOOL OV football looks strong in Division III

By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — Buoyed by a new divisional status, a big win at home last week, and a roster of tough, athletic players, the Otter Valley Union High School football team could have its best season in years. Third-year Head Coach Jim Hill said Monday that his team this year may lack the overall size of some opposing teams, but they are fast … and tough. “This is the most physical group I’ve coached,” Hill said. “They love to bring it. They hit it hard.” The Otters have split their two games so far, with a loss to Fair Haven followed by a huge 42-14 win over BFA-Fairfax on Sept. 7 in front of the home crowd. That was one game where Hill said OV had a size advantage over Fairfax, a new opponent now that the Otters have moved from Division II to Division III ball. “Our line is not very big,” Hill said of the Otter offensive line. “The biggest kid I have is 220 pounds, another kid is 6-foot-3, 215. We were bigger than Fairfax, and I think we’re bigger than most D-III teams, but not all.” Hill said he is perfectly happy to be playing D-III ball. OV is a small school with only 200 eligible boys, he said, and the football team has faced an uphill battle in D-II for years. “We’ve been playing at a level above our size for the last few years,” the coach said. “I’m excited about playing teams our size or similar size. We’re going to compete where we’re put.” To that end, Hill said the Otters’ running game is in mid-season form, thanks to a pair of talented backs in senior captain Mike Winslow and sophomore Carson Leary, who have helped OV earn hundreds of total rushing yards in each the first two games. Senior Tyler Jones is also a captain this year.

The Otters are led by junior quarterback John Winslow, who is proving to be a reliable and athletic passer. He was 20 for 32 in the Fair Haven game and 10 for 13 against BFA-Fairfax. “We’re working on big passing plays,” Hills said, adding that the Otters receiving corps took a hit from graduation, and that is an area that Hill is rebuilding. OV graduated four talented receivers in Jim Winslow, Justin Owen, Brett Patterson and Chad Lonergan. Hill said now he is working with a new crop of receivers, senior Justin Wedin, juniors Joey Scarborough and Derek Bassette, and sophomore Robertas Nielsen. “Justin is our most consistent re-

ceiver right now,” Hill said, “Joey has great speed and Derek and Robertas have a lot of athleticism. We’re just struggling with catching and holding onto the ball.” OV has a big game coming up on Friday night in Mill River under the lights, and Hill said it will be a game to remember. After that, the coach said he thinks this Otter team can be in the final four teams in D-III at the end of the season. After the Mill River game, the Otters face more manageable teams for the final four games: Mount St. Joseph at home, Poultney, Winooski, then Oxbow at home to end the season. Overall, Hill is enjoying his team this year and is optimistic about the

season and the players. “It’s a great chemistry,” he said. “There is no ‘me first’ attitude. It’s all about the team with these guys. And that intensity. This is certainly the best group I’ve had since I was hired as head coach.” Otter Valley Union High School Varsity Football Date Opponent/Event Time 8/31 Fair Haven 1 p.m. 9/7 BFA-Fairfax 7 p.m. 9/13 @ Mill River 7 p.m. 9/28 MSJ 1 p.m. 10/5 @ Poultney 3 p.m. 10/11 @ Winooski 7 p.m. 10/19 Oxbow 1 p.m.

OTTER VALLEY UNION HIGH SCHOOL OV boys’ soccer to feature new look

By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — Muffie Harvey loves coaching her Otter boys’ soccer team. That love has been evident each season since she was hired in 2011, regardless of the number of wins or losses. She simply loves to teach kids the game of soccer. This season, the boys are off to a promising 2-1 start as of Sept. 8 with wins over Fair Haven and Windsor, and Harvey is thrilled with what she’s seen so far. “The boys are looking really good this year,” Harvey said in an interview last week. “We’ve got a lot of solid talent and some strong, upcoming talent as well.” Harvey also has the privilege of coaching her son, Barron Harvey, a senior who is co-captain this year with seniors Will Claessens and Nick Mischanko. Coach Harvey said the leadership her captains are showing has led to a great overall team atmosphere this season. “I see a better chemistry this year,” she said. “Not that I thought we had a chemistry problem last year, but these guys are real leaders.” Harvey also singled out tenacious defenseman Connor Gallipo, a junior who came out of the gate to play

from the very first game this season. “He’s awesome,” the coach said. “He’s a leader and he’ll shine this season, as long as I can keep him healthy.” Harvey also has two seniors returning to soccer after a two-year hiatus. Devin Beayon is back after recovering from a severely broken leg, and baseball standout Shane Quenneville is in the goal as the Otters’ keeper. “He does a nice job for us and I’m thrilled to have him back,” Harvey said of Quenneville.

For juniors, Harvey has one, Ben Lones, whom she described as “a force to be reckoned with” as far as his ball handling. Among the 11 sophomores is Collin Eugair, who made the switch from football. Five freshmen round out the 27-member team this season. The Otter boys ended last season with a loss to No. 5 Woodstock in the playdowns and a record of 4-9-1. Harvey said she had no problem with the way her team played last season, bouncing back from a five-game losing streak.

“We lost to the teams we were supposed to lose to,” she said. “We can’t compete with the Burr and Burtons and the Hartfords. They recruit!” Through some divisional shuffling, Burr and Burton and Hartford have both been moved to Division I, leveling the playing field a bit for the D-II Otters. “We need to play teams we can be competitive with,” Harvey said. “If I could have a .500 season this year, I’d be tickled. I think it’s doable.”

By ANDY KIRKALDY BRANDON — With many key players returning and a strong preseason following on the heels of a winning 2012, Otter Valley field hockey coach Stacey EdmundsBrickell said she and the Otters were feeling optimistic heading into the regular season. “I just think we have great strength all the way across,” Edmunds-Brickell said. “We certainly have veteran players.” Several of those veterans return up front. Senior Brittany Bushey, a fouryear starter, will line up at inside forward along with another senior veteran, Emily Lowell, if Lowell recovers from an early season injury. Two juniors will be the wings, Kylee Bissette and Jenna Elliott. One promising newcomer and a member of one of three sets of sisters on the team, Allison Lowell, will back up a group of forwards that Edmunds-Brickell said should be productive. “We certainly have a fast and skilled front line. They want to score goals,” she said. Junior Laura Beth Roberts and sophomore Maia Edmunds will share the center and right middie positions, and junior Marissa Colburn will line

up on the left side. Freshman Courtney Bushey will come off the bench to spell what Edmunds-Brickell said should be another strong unit. “Our midfield is working hard at transitioning … better than we did last year,” she said. “They’re really supporting the front line.” Senior Olivia Bloomer returns to anchor the defense in the middle, with senior Alexia Colburn on one side and sophomore Ann Manning on the other. Seniors Erin Flood and Caitlyn Curtis and freshman Meghan Hallett can also step into the back. “Our defense, they’re solid players,” Edmunds-Brickell said. Freshman Myliah McDonough is the goalie, and Edmunds-Brickell said she worked hard over the summer to learn the position. Edmunds-Brickell said she and the Otters, who lost only two D-II games in 2012, one a close playoff contest to eventual champion Harwood, are setting their sights on the title game this season. “I think we have a strong team that is strong across the field … I think they are working well together,” she said. “If they play the field hockey they are capable of playing, there’s no reason they can’t be there.”

Senior leadership key for OV girls’ soccer By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — “Our team is small in numbers but I feel we have the ability to speak volumes.” That is the OV girls’ soccer coach Dave Brown’s take on his 2013 team, which is looking good despite a 0-2 start as of Sept. 8. With only 14 players on the squad, Brown is looking to his core of nine seniors to help improve on last season. The Otters ended the 2012 campaign ranked No. 13 in Division II with a 4-8-2 record, and lost in the playdowns to Lake Region. Brown said the experience was one the team is using to fuel itself this year. “Four of our games last season were decided in double overtime,” Brown said. “This left a bitter taste with our team and we would like to be competitively strong enough to carry a home playoff match this season.” Almost all of the seniors are returning starters from last year, including captains Brianna Hedding and Michelle Maseroni, speedy forwards Taylor Aines and talented Jessica Frazier up front, tough midfielder Savannah Lynch and Cortney Poljacik returning to the goal. There are no juniors on this team. Three sophomores, Alexis Hedding (playing midfield with Lynch), Shana Houle and Isabelle Kingsley,

and two freshmen, Jillian Flanders and Abby Pinkowski, round out the squad. In the early part of the season the Otters have made a good showing despite their 1-2 record. They lost their opener on the road against perennially strong Middlebury, 1-0, and lost a tough match against Vergennes, 4-3. Brown said his goal this season is to pound the basics of soccer, the bare bones of the game: ball handling, passing and scoring. “Our areas of focus this year are on the basic fundamentals of a simple game,” he said. “We scored 32 goals last season and allowed 33. Soccer is simple ... If you score more than you allow, you win!” The schedule is not on the Otters’ side this season. They face strong teams like Mill River, Woodstock, Springfield and Burr and Burton on the road, and will now play perennial powerhouse Proctor as well, now that the Marble Valley League has moved the Phantoms up in division. All told, there are 10 road games and only five home games for the OV girls this season. Brown is optimistic nevertheless. “We have a tough schedule this season and every game is going to be a dog fight,” Brown said. “But, I think our Otter girls are more than capable of handling their own.”

Vergennes brings back experienced runners By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — Once again, the Vergennes cross-country team will be small. But this year, unless more athletes decided to sign up after the semester started, there will be little margin for error: As school opened, the Commodores had seven boys, just enough to form a varsity team — plus two girls who will run as individuals. The good news for Coach Brad Castillo’s program is that four of his seven boys ran for VUHS at the D-II state meet in 2012, and all finished with respectable times of between 20:21 and 21:31. Those four, in order, are seniors Matteo Palmer and Jarret LaFleche, junior Wesley Miedema, and sophomore Jesse Barnes. Sophomore Silas Mullin also ran for VUHS a year ago, Castillo said, but not in the state meet. All will bring something to the table, Castillo said. “Matteo has come into the season looking fantastic. I’m hoping he will pull the other guys along quicker,” he said. LaFleche will have to work into top shape, something Castillo is confident will occur. “Once he gets into the swing of things, he’ll push Matteo,” he said. Castillo said Miedema is “long and

lean” and has “a good pace,” while Barnes is “much improved from last season” and Mullin is “smart and coachable.” The newcomers were unknowns as the preseason opened, and Castillo will look for them to develop and possibly emerge. They are sophomores Quinn D’Andrea and Xavier Provencher. With only two female runners, the Commodores will not score points, barring highly successful recruiting early in the school year. But Castillo said freshman Alyse Beauchemin was

a strong runner in middle school, and Sophia Parker, a novice to the sport, is “incredibly eager” to learn. As for the boys, who can compete in the D-II championship meet, Castillo said he would bring them along slowly to avoid injury and burnout. Then, he said, they could surprise some people. “I think we can make some noise. Unfortunately, other teams are bigger and more established,” Castillo said. “But I’m convinced if everyone runs to form and stays healthy, we can definitely play the spoiler.”

Young soccer team to rely on skill, teamwork By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — Graduation hit a number of teams hard this fall, but probably none harder than Vergennes boys’ soccer: Fourteen 2012 team members walked across the stage in the VUHS gym in June. But Coach Kevin Hayes believes the 2013 Commodores just might be able to hold their own despite the wholesale changes. Many of them, he said, have been teammates on successful youth and club squads. “This bunch has been playing together for a few years, so they’ve got some good soccer IQ. They’re a unit,” he said. “They can move the ball. They have some skill. They understand the game.” The question, of course, is how

well a young team short on varsity experience will handle a challenging new level of play. “That’s the key right there. They’ve been very successful in all the youth levels … But adapting to the varsity level, we’re facing that now,” Hayes said. “It’s how they deal with that first year of varsity, most of them.” The Commodores do have players with experience. Six players return from the 2012 opening roster, all now seniors. Jordan Stearns and Josh Benning will probably start as defensive central midfielders, Ryan Moriglioni at central defense, and Shane Lawrence as a flank midfielder. Jared Birchmore will come off the bench at midfield, and Logan Ambrose will

see time at wing back. Two more saw time as JV callups, juniors Liam Godfrey and Liam Hayes. Godfrey will start out this fall as the team’s offensive central midfielder in what will be a lineup with three defenders, five midfielders and two strikers, and Hayes will be one of the two frontrunners. Running with Hayes up front will be junior Luke Paquin, while junior Dana Ambrose will spell both Godfrey and the forwards. Junior Jake Dombek rounds out the midfield starters, with junior Chris Castillo and the team’s only sophomore, Aaron Gaines, ready to step in at midfield. Junior Elan Hugo was slated to be the third defensive starter, with se-

nior Logan Ambrose backing up the defenders. The Commodores’ schedule called for, to start, challenging non-league games against Stowe and Montpelier sandwiched around a tough Lake Division game vs. Rice. “I feel it’s a good test,” Hayes said. “The early games will tell us where we land and what we need to do.” Hayes does expect the young Commodores to improve as the season goes along and they adapt to varsity play. “I’m looking forward to this bunch,” he said. “There’s a big hole left by the seniors … but these are soccer players who can hang with teams from a skills standpoint.”

Let’s Go Commodores!

UNION

By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — In 2012, a young Vergennes girls’ soccer team won five games and was competitive in several more. Only three starters graduated from co-coaches Dwight Irish and Peter Maneen’s squad, two midfielders and the goalie, and they are optimistic for better results in 2013. “I think (we’ll take) a good step forward. I don’t know how big,” Irish said. “If it goes according to plan, I think we can make a little run in the playoffs.” In part, the progress will depend on how well the team’s newcomers adapt to varsity play. “We’ll see how these young players respond to this next level,”

Irish said. A good place to start when building a team is defense, and the Commodores return their starters: steady senior sweeper Phoebe Plank; sophomore stopper Kareena Vorsteveld, who Irish said is ready to have a big year; and senior flank backs Samara Sausville and Keyannah Smith. Backing them up will be freshman Megan Rooney and, if she returns from an injury, junior Sammy Kepes. “We’ve got our returning defense,” Irish said. “We really like the prospect of that,” In goal, the coaches in preseason were mulling two options. Junior K.C. Ambrose, a striker a year ago who volunteered for the job, and

sophomore Emma Gardner were the choices. Two juniors return as central midfielders, Tia Hunt with a more defensive orientation, and Haley Paquette on the offensive side. Irish said he and Maneen are happy to have an axis of Plank, Vorsteveld, Hunt and Paquette in the center of the field. “Up the middle has really looked good for us,” he said. Sophomore Julia Johnson steps up to start at right midfield, and sophomore Sara Stearns was the choice on the left side. Irish said speedy sophomore Felicia Armell and freshman Caroline Johnston would also see time at midfield. One of the two strikers will be

high-scoring four-year varsity veteran Ruby Dombek. The coaches plan to pair sophomore Tea Keifer with Dombek. “Up top, Ruby, obviously, I think is going to have a good year,” Irish said. “And Tea I think is going to be a nice complement.” In the preseason, the team was scoring and moving the ball well, Irish said. “We’ve got the short thing going a little bit, and the combinations, and we’re putting the ball in the net,” he said. In all, Irish and Maneen believe the Commodores will hold their own. “I think we’re going to compete pretty well,” Irish said.
