Ferrisburgh Department looks back to its history By WEYLAND JOYNER FERRISBURGH — “I think our department is like family,” says Mike Donnelly, 59, of the Ferrisburgh Volunteer Fire Department. This is a common refrain among departments throughout the county, whose close-knit community provides the bedrock on which members are willing to risk their lives for their neighbors. Donnelly should know: his grandfather, Harris Yandow, founded the Ferrisburgh department Donnelly’s father, Chuck, was deputy chief, and Mike Donnelly himself served as deputy chief in his turn. Donnelly and other members of the department have worked for the past three years catacollecting the accounts of past members, photographs and vintage gear. “The department is steeped in history, and history is really important in recruiting new mem-

bers,” Donnelly says, adding that the sense of history and shared experience across generations The research is not yet so extensive it could make a book, but it makes for a nice story. Here’s an overview: GETTING STARTED The Ferrisburgh Volunteer Fire Department started as a men’s club initially led by businessman Harris Yandow. The focus was on raising money for the war effort, providing civil air parisburgh Hollow area. VFD was the seventh department to join the organization. this time the department purchased a 1925 for $400. In 1950, the Yandows donated land in the “Hollow” by the old mud church and gave the department an interest-free loan to build a two-bay station. Cliff Rivers and Bruce Hill led the construction effort, along with numerous volunteers. EXPANSION AND CHANGE The department acquired truck in 1952 for $1,400. Chief Yandow lobbied to put an oxygen tank

on the pumper truck in 1957, not realizing that it would save his life when he suffered a heart attack in 1958.

as chief. Bob Jenkins took over, leading the de-

Ferrisburgh Central School in 1960. The event was held the weekend before deer season, and

was formed. It included current chief Bill Wager. The cadet program is still running strong, and many current members of the department came up through the cadet ranks. George “Peewee” Marcotte served as the department’s third chief from 1981-1984. Chief Jenkins then took the reins again until Dave Bowles became the fourth chief from 1987(See Ferrisburgh, Page 10)

This tradition would continue for 35 years, until 1995. The station was expanded to three bays and a brand new 1964 International pumper was bought for $13,335 in 1964. Yandow stepped down in 1970 after 29 years

from 1970-1981, and again from 1984-1987.
