Obstacle Running BRISTOL MAN WON'T TAKE THE EASY PATH ho is that group on Mount Abe running with weights on their backs and determination in their faces?

It’s probably Brian Ladeau and Team Sinergy, a group of Vermonters hooked on obstacle course racing.

For the past four years, Ladeau, a 45-year-old Bristol resident and the owner of Otter Creek Custom Framing in Middlebury, has been running, hiking and lifting his way through some of the toughest obstacle courses around.

Ladeau said the passion started out as a dare among gym buddies.

“We were working out, we were lifting heavy, we didn’t really run,” he recalled. “We saw this Spartan Beast race in Killington and said ‘Hey, let’s do it.’ And we went into it like a deer in a headlight.”

Ladeau completed that first race with long-time friend Steve Beckwith, a Middlebury resident. They finished the race in eightand-a-half hours — the same race they finished within five hours this past year.

Locally, Ladeau trains with Beckwith and a crew of between six and ten other athletes. However, this group often heads to Shale Hill Adventure in Benson, a 10-kilometer course with more than 60 obstacles. Shale Hill is also home to Team Sinergy, the larger group founded by Shale Hill owner Rob Butler.

Ladeau and his Addison County group can also be found on the trails of Mount Abraham, Camel’s Hump, Mount Mansfield and Killington Peak, bounding up in preparation for the rough terrain common in obstacle course races.

G

etting outside to enjoy the great outdoors can reduce the likelihood that a person will live a sedentary lifestyle that can negatively affect longterm health. But many adults are spending too much time indoors.

In its 2014 OUT is IN national survey, the National Recreation and Park Association found that 28 percent of adults in the United States do not spend time outside daily. The survey, conducted

by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of the NPRA, asked 1,005 adults to share their opinions and behaviors regarding outdoor time. While 35 percent of respondents said work was getting in the way of their spending time outdoors, 39 percent said their computers, tablets, smartphones, and televisions were keeping them indoors.

Though it might be difficult to cut back on hours at the office, adults do have the capacity to cut back on their screen time. Using that newfound free time to get outdoors can pay dividends for years to come, as the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability notes that the potential consequences of living a sedentary lifestyle are severe.

According to the NCHPAD, one study indicated a 40 percent decrease in cancer mortality among physically active persons compared to those who were inactive.

Physical activity also helps to prevent insulin resistance, which is the underlying cause of type 2 diabetes.

While you don’t

need to get outdoors to be physically active, men and women who find themselves bored by workouts at the gym or at home may be more likely to embrace physical activity if they can get their exercise outdoors. The following are three great ways to spend more time enjoying all that nature has to offer.

• Take up hiking. While some hiking trails are best left to seasoned hikers, many are built for hikers of all ages and abilities. Men and women who are overweight should not be intimidated by hiking, as even the simplest trails can help them get back on a healthy track. Men and women who incorporate hiking into their regular routines can lower their risk of heart disease and improve their blood pressure and blood sugar levels. The American Hiking Society also notes that research has shown that hiking can positively affect mood by helping to combat the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

• Ride a bike to work. Adults whose homes are in close proximity to their offices may want to try riding a bike to work instead of relying on their cars or mass transportation. Cycling improves cardiovascular fitness and increases muscle strength and flexibility. In addition, the stressrelieving properties of exercise can certainly be ascribed to cycling, which may even help adults prevent stressful episodes by relieving them of the burden of sitting in rush hour traffic.

• Grow your own foods. While the cost of fruits and vegetables may not be busting your monthly budget, growing your own fruits and vegetables is a cost-effective way to find more time for the great outdoors. In addition, a study from researchers in the Netherlands suggested that gardening is better for fighting stress than reading indoors.

Nature awaits, and adults should know that some playtime in the great outdoors is not just for kids.

improve their health creates a happier and healthier workforce that reduces costs for employees and the company, according to Senior Medical Director of UnitedHealthcare of New England Dr. Neal Galinko.

An estimated 70 percent of employers already offer wellness programs in their companies, with eight percent more planning to follow in the effort during the next year, according to the Society for Human Resource Management.

The most common wellness initiative among local businesses is providing or subsidizing gym memberships for employees, including in Addison County. For instance, Middlebury Dental Group provides gym memberships at the Vermont Sun Fitness Center for all of its employees, and J.W. & D.E. Ryan’s Plumbing & Heating in Vergennes subsidizes 50 percent of

their employees’ sports programs, from personal training to golf memberships.

At the Middlebury Dental Group, gym membership has become a social experience for the employees.

People at work coordinate their schedules to go to the gym together and to take body pump and spinning classes together, acting as fitness buddies who push each other to achieve more.

“Doing things like this outside the office is great for health and team building,” said Dr. Adam Fasoli, one of the two dentists at Middlebury Dental.

For many people, working out together makes it easier to find time for exercise.

In addition to external health and fitness programs, many local businesses also provide job-focused initiatives that promote health and wellness within the day-to-day functions of the workplace. Some

companies, such as Middlebury Dental and Maple Landmark Woodcraft in Middlebury, put their efforts into improving on-the-job ergonomics — that is, helping the body move efficiently and without undue strain at workstations — to ensure a physically comfortable and healthy working environment.

Addison County goes even further with its health and fitness initiatives within the workplace. In addition to a wellness center and treadmills in the workplace, CSAC encourages its employees to set health and fitness goals and has a buddy system in place to foster community alongside goal completion.

Ryan’s Plumbing and Heating offers health and wellness programs that are specific to the type of work its employees do. The company hosts monthly safety meetings to inform its employees of health and safety concerns that they encounter daily on the job. The topics addressed at meetings range from ladder safety to back safety.

Despite the wide range of employee wellness programs, many employers work toward fostering wellness not only in individual employees, but also in the workplace community.

Participating employees in programs have also reacted positively.

Further, the company gives its employees an allowance toward footwear. It may seem trivial, but is essential to knee and back health, according to office manager Tanya Scuteri.

“They seem to like it a lot,” Middlebury Dental’s Fasoli said with a laugh.

running, one day of carrying either sandbags or weighted vests, a couple days of obstacle training at Shale Hill, plus a lot of hiking, lifting and stretching.

Ladeau, who recently ran six miles with a 25-pound weight vest, isn’t afraid to push himself.

“Shale Hill is probably the hardest course you could possibly train on.

It’s harder than any race that you could do,” he said.

And Ladeau is not competing in easy races. Last year he completed 16 different obstacle course races, including a number of Spartan races: Battlefrog, an 8-kilometer militarystyle race; the HESCO Bonefrog, a 9-to-12-mile race with more than 36 obstacles created by Navy SEALS; and most significantly, the OCR

(Obstacle Course Racing) World Championships.

Athletes must qualify for the OCR World Championships, to be held in Toronto from October 14 to 16 this year. In his first OCR World Championship race in Ohio last year, Ladeau hoped to finish in the top 50 percent for his age and gender group, 40- to 44-year-old men. He finished in the top 10 percent and hopes to do the same this year, although he will be competing with the 45- to 49-year-old group.

Ladeau and his training group are all focused on the world championships, a three-day event that starts with a short course, 3-kilometer race Friday; highlights a Pro-Championship race on Saturday; and finishes with a team race on Sunday.

“Right now all of us are geared towards OCR World Championships.

That’s our big focus. There’s a few on our team that haven’t qualified yet, and that’s their goal, to qualify,” Ladeau said.

Ladeau grew up in Bristol, and as a student he played baseball and basketball. He’s been working in framing since 1990 and has owned Otter Creek Custom Framing for the past 12 years. Training for obstacle course races is a crucial part of Ladeau’s physical and mental health.

“I do it to stay in shape and also, it’s sort of my way to deal with life in general. Just getting exercise, lifting weights, running,” he said. “It’s just a mental thing, earbuds, and you’re going. It’s a way of dealing with life … this is my way.”

Offer Incentives: More employees may participate in wellness programs when companies offer incentives, which can include gift cards, lower health insurance premiums, cash bonuses, and discounts on various health products and services. Some programs featuring wearable devices enable employees to earn up to $1,500 per year in incentives by meeting specific daily walking goals, while employers can achieve premium savings based on participants’ combined results.

Gather Biometric Data: Biometric screenings may give employees a better snapshot of their current health, including weight, body mass index and blood glucose, so offering them onsite at the workplace and at health fairs may encourage more employees to participate.

More advanced programs can include connected devices, such as a Bluetooth-enabled wireless scale, blood pressure monitor or thermometer, which can transmit the participant’s vital signs to a case management nurse or wellness coach.
