Champ swimmers power to victory Vergennes tips St. Albans, reaches 2-1 By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — The Vergennes Champs on Tuesday swamped St. Albans, 301-156, at the Vergennes city pool for their second victory in three Champlain Valley Swim League outings. Allison Croke led Vergennes by sweeping all four 12-and-under girls’ races. Three Champ boys won three races each: U-10 swimmer Ethan Croke, U-12 swimmer Carson Hoffman and U-14 swimmer Nathan Viera. Another four Champs touched the wall first twice each: Will Clark in U-8 boys’ events, Madelyn Giroux in U-10 girls’ events, Leah Croke in U-14 girls’ races, and Jacob Viera in U-18 boys’ competition. Vergennes took charge early by winning seven of the nine opening medley relays. The Champs swept the U-10 and U-12 relays, and the Champ U-8 boys, U-14 girls and U-18 boys’ teams also won. Vergennes also won six of 10 freestyle relays to close out a warm, sunny evening on East Street. The Champs also lost a close competition the previous Thursday; see story. Brown tops Simmons as Sodbusters mark 50 years BRISTOL — Debra Brown edged out Brian Simmons in the top flight of the Sodbusters Horseshoe Pitching Club 50th Anniversary Tournament, held this past Sunday on the Sodbusters’ home turf next to the Bristol American Legion Post. Simmons tossed a slightly higher percentage of ringers overall, 79.878.08, but Brown prevailed in their head-to-head matchup to finish with a 7-0 Class A record. Simmons was right behind at 6-1. Eighty-three competitors in all showed up, including 11 from New Hampshire, three from Massachusetts, two from Connecticut and one each from New York and Florida. KAHRS PITTSFORD — The email was simple enough — “Patrick Daly of Pittsford will be competing in the USA Sport Climbing National Competition in Atlanta, Ga., on July 14-18.” And then there was the photo. Patrick Daly is nine years old. And he’s been climbing for six years. “His older brother Michael climbed competitively for six years,” explained Patrick’s mother, Margaret, in a phone interview Saturday. “I just took Patrick along to the climbing center and he started climbing, too.” Michael Daly, 16, is a junior at Otter Valley Union High School, and climbs with the OV Rock Climbing Club. He has competed in regional climbing competitions. Patrick qualified to climb at the nationals event by placing fifth in his age group at the Northeast (See Daly, Page 2B)
