Sunday  afternoon  left  something  to  be  desired.  We  were  en  route  across  Vermont  and  used  it  as  an  excuse  to  ¿VK WKH :KLWH 5LYHU DW WZR GLIIHUHQW locations  in  Bethel,  including  the  special  regulations  wild  trout  stretch.  Neither  proved  very  good.  In  fact,  we  didn’t  see  a  single  trout.  The  water  was  warm  and  also  too  murky  from  thunderstorms  the  previous  day.  But  JRRG ÂżVKLQJ DQG EDG ÂżVKLQJ ERWK tend  to  make  a  person  philosophical.  And  Dave  did  ask  some  more  pro-­ found  questions.  â€œWhy  did  the  sole  of  my  wading  shoe  suddenly  just  fall  off  when  we  have  to  walk  a  half  mile  along  the  river  bank,  through  woods,  up  a  steep  hill,  and  along  a  railroad  track  to  get  back  to  our  car?â€?  â€œI  don’t  know,â€?  I  replied.  I  had  not  read  Kierkegaard  in  many  years,  but  I  didn’t  want  to  admit  it.  But  I  had  learned  from  Dave  that  asking  ques-­ tions  was  a  good  way  to  be  philo-­ sophical.  â€œWant  to  stop  at  the  upper  0LGGOHEXU\ 5LYHU LQ 5LSWRQ DV ZH drive  through?  I’m  going  to  use  a  VPDOO PD\Ă€\ Q\PSK ´ )RUWXQDWHO\ Dave  had  another  pair  of  wading  shoes  in  the  car,  and  the  stop  sal-­ vaged  the  day  as  we  each  landed  a  couple  small  brook  trout. Apply  by  Jul.  29   for  invasive  aquatic  species  workshop MONTPELIER  â€”  Vermont  Invasive  Patrollers  (VIP),  a  volunteer  monitoring  program  of  the  Vermont  Department  of  Environmental  Conservation  (VT  DEC),  provides  a  critical  line  of  defense  against  invasive  species  that  threaten  our  lakes  and  ponds.  Volunteers,  or  VIPs,  are  trained  to  identify  and  distinguish  between  native  and  invasive  aquatic  plants  and  animals,  and  to  conduct  surveys  for  aquatic  invaders  like  Eurasian  watermilfoil,  water  chestnut,  and  zebra  mussels.  VIPs  survey  a  lake  or  pond  twice  each  summer  and  submit  their  surveys  and  any  suspi-­ FLRXV ÂżQGLQJV WR 97 '(& A  workshop  on  aquatic  invasive  VSHFLHV ELRORJ\ LGHQWLÂżFDWLRQ VSUHDG prevention,  and  survey  techniques  is  scheduled  for  Friday,  Aug.  2,  from  9  a.m.  to  2  p.m.  at  Marsh-­Billings-­ Rockefeller  National  Historical  Park  in  Woodstock.  Those  who  complete  the  workshop  can  sign  up  to  be  a  VIP  on  their  favorite  water  body,  although  commitment  to  become  a  VIP  is  not  required  to  attend  the  workshop.  The  workshop  is  offered  at  no  cost  to  participants  and  will  include  both  time  in  the  classroom  and  on  the  water.  Participants  need  to  have  a  FDQRH RU ND\DN IRU WKH ÂżHOG SRUWLRQ of  the  workshop. Aquatic  invasive  species  have  several  common  characteristics.  They  reproduce  abundantly  (for  example,  aquatic  invasive  plants  can  often  form  a  whole  new  plant  from  just  a  fragment)  and  lack  natural  predators  and  other  control  mechanisms.  And  if  we’re  not  care-­ ful,  they  also  tend  to  be  skilled  hitchhikers,  hitching  rides  on  boats,  ¿VKLQJ JHDU DQG RWKHU UHFUHDWLRQDO equipment  as  we  travel  from  one  lake  to  another. Once  established,  they  can  reduce  species  diversity,  out-­ compete  native  species  that  support  ¿VK KDELWDW DQG GLVUXSW WKH HFRV\V-­ tem  balance.  They  can  also  be  hard  on  our  pocketbooks.  For  example,  zebra  mussels  can  attach  to  and  clog  intake  pipes,  and  water  chest-­ nut  can  grow  so  dense  it  makes  boating  all  but  impossible,  which  can  hurt  recreation-­based  tourism. The  testing,  which  took  place  at  Middlebury  Union  Middle  School,  was  5  hours  long  and  incorporated  drills,  board  breaking,  patterns,  self  defense,  knife  defense,  sparring  and Â

general  knowledge.  The  students,  who  ranged  in  age  from  8  to  53,  have  been  training  twice  a  week  every  week  for  3  to  5  years  to  get  ready  for  this  day. ADDISON  COUNTY  â€”  On  July  19  at  10:13  p.m.  Vermont  State  Po-­ lice  responded  to  a  report  that  a  pickup  truck  had  crashed  into  a  util-­ ity  pole  in  Salisbury  and  that  power  lines  were  down.  The  collision  sent  the  driver  and  three  passengers  to  the  hospital.
