$ ¿UVW UXQ LQ ZLWK D 9HUPRQW ERZ¿Q Recently,  I  was  reminded  (yet  again)  of  what  amazing,  abundant,  DQG GLYHUVH ¿VKLQJ RSSRUWXQLWLHV DUH available  to  anglers  in  Vermont.  With-­ in  a  short  drive  of  Addison  County  RQH FDQ ¿QG EURRN EURZQ DQG UDLQ-­ bow  trout  in  dozens  of  rivers  and  streams,  and  several  mountain  ponds.  7KHUH DUH VDOPRQ DQG ODNH WURXW LQ &KDPSODLQ DQG VRPH LQODQG ODNHV 3LNH DQG VPDOO-­ mouth  thrive  in  the  bigger  rivers  and  many  ponds.  <RX FDQ DOVR ¿QG PXVNLHV ZDOOH\H perch,  largemouth  EDVV IDOO¿VK DQG bullhead.  $QG WKHVH DUH MXVW WKH EHWWHU NQRZQ JDPH ¿VK DQG IRRG ¿VK 7KH 9HUPRQW Department  of  Fish  and  Wildlife  web-­ site  claims  there  are  more  than  90  spe-­ FLHV RI ¿VK LQ WKH VWDWH 6RPH RI WKHVH can  get  big.  Some  are  strangely  pre-­ KLVWRULF 6RPH DUH ERWK OLNH WKH HQ-­ GDQJHUHG DQG SURWHFWHG ODNH VWXUJHRQ Burbot,  carp,  and  longnose  gar  also  come  to  mind. $QG ERZ¿Q D VSHFLHV , KDG KHDUG about  for  a  few  years,  but  to  which  I  was  only  recently  personally  intro-­ duced. $ERXW \HDUV DJR P\ PRWKHU LQ law  and  father-­in-­law,  both  of  whom  ZHUH ERUQ LQ 9HUPRQW PRYHG EDFN here  after  years  of  living  out  of  state  and  even  out  of  the  country.  They  set-­ tled  initially  in  South  Burlington,  but  eventually  grew  tired  of  big-­city  life.  So  after  a  few  years  they  moved  half  DQ KRXU QRUWK WR *HRUJLD WR D VPDOO house  right  on  Arrowhead  Mountain  /DNH WKH ODVW LPSRXQGPHQW RI WKH /DPRLOOH 5LYHU EHIRUH LW ÀRZV LQWR Champlain.  )RU P\ IDWKHU LQ ODZ LW IXO¿OOHG D lifelong  dream  of  owning  a  house  on  WKH ZDWHU 7KH\ FDQ VLW RQ WKHLU EDFN SRUFK DQG ZDWFK GXFNV JHHVH EOXH heron  and  otters.  A  pair  of  osprey  nested  within  earshot  of  their  house  RQ WKH KLOO EHKLQG WKHP RYHUORRNLQJ WKH ODNH Two  species  of  turtles  crawl  up  out  RI WKH ODNH RQWR WKHLU ODZQ WR OD\ HJJV (See  Dickerson,  Page  2B)
