Any species of fish in the Winooski River Recreational Area is eligible as long as it’s legal and caught by a child 14 or under, accompanied by an adult. The child must play and land the fish; the adult may help bait hooks, cast and land the fish with a net. Each entry will be judged on weight and time of entry. This event is free!

You have 50 weeks to catch any of 15 species in any body of water in the Lake Champlain Basin. A $25,000 prize is split among the top three heaviest fish in each category.

THE DERBY HOW LAKE CHAMPLAIN INTERNATIONAL GOT ITS START

t started as a simple idea: to stimulate business and attract tourism. Thirty-six years later, it became the most significant and influential fishing derby in Lake Champlain’s history. That’s an easy claim to make because Lake Champlain International Father’s Day Fishing Derby spawned the non-profit that we know today, which has been dedicating countless hours and resources to the betterment of the lake since the first derby in 1982.

Jacobus led the non-profit for another 15 years. All of his work was volunteer, while he kept up a full time job with IBM. “It was a big burden to run it as a volunteer,” he said. “In the ‘90s I was thinking we needed something other than the derby because we were making money, but not enough to cover everything.” So they tried getting into the business of doing outdoors shows — to mild success. Then they set up a public aquarium, which was met with resistance, so they sold that to ECHO. By the late ’90s, Jacobus was left with just the fishing derby. His executive director at the time was leaving and his advertising ringer (Warren) had died suddenly in 1990. It was, he said, the right time to sell.

It all started with a partnership between South Burlington resident Bill Jacobus and the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce back in ’82. The late Captain John Delorme — a Burlington native and chamber board member who ran charter fishing trips on Lake Champlain as well as in the Great Lakes — brought the idea up during a board meeting.

The fishing derby was meant to raise money to support coldwater fisheries in Lake Champlain. “The chamber was going to supply the administrative support and we were going to do all the rest,” said Jacobus in a recent interview.

Gaining traction with this new idea (without any help from the internet) was a feat. So Jacobus turned to Ken Warren, who owned an advertising business in Burlington and managed the ad sales for WDOT radio Vermont.

“Ken used to run all these free spots on the radio for us,” Jacobus remembered. “Without his contribution to the derby we wouldn’t have been successful because we didn’t have a nickle to spend on advertising. Ken was 12 — A Publication of Vermont Sports

a huge supporter of our efforts.

Anything we needed; he was there for us.”

The first year Jacobus said 2,300 people showed up to fish, and the next year the derby doubled.

Funds from the first two events went into the Vermont Sports Fishing Alliance, a non-profit established for the partnership between the chamber and Jacobus.

“With that money, we gave grants

out every year, and did a lot of political things — like mailings and rallies,” Jacobus said. “But first and foremost it was about conservation efforts on Lake Champlain, particularly as they pertained to sports fishing and tourism.”

“The third year, the chamber got cold feet,” said Jacobus.

“They wanted out, so we formed LCI, Inc., and I took over as president.”

“The derby had decreased from our high of 10,000 people to about 5,500 for a few years and it really needed some new blood and new energy to come in,” Jacobus said.

“We searched for about a year, and then found James Ehlers,” continued Jacobus. “I knew him because he did some contract work for us.” Ehlers also volunteered.

Jacobus sold the derby to Ehlers in 1998, who has since run LCI as the executive director.

“James took over and he has done a great job,” Jacobus said. “LCI was something I didn’t want to see end.

It was stressful at the end, but we have some good memories.”

Jacobus, now retired, summers in South Hero and fishes for fun. The largest fish he’s ever caught was a 36-pound Atlantic Salmon — and he caught it on a fly — while (See LCI Start, Page 13)

fishing the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada. In Lake Champlain, he guesses the biggest fish was probably a 14-pound lake trout.

“I guess 17 years of work paid off,” he laughed, of the derby’s upcoming 36th anniversary.

“James has put his touch on it and I think he has done a fantastic job keeping LCI alive. It’s nice to know that this thing keeps going.”

said. “It was a 27-inch smallmouth bass. It’s amazing out there; I’ve met people from all over the world.

“I just want to see it continue and be vibrant... it’s part of our community and our lives.” – Kyle Warren

“As an adult, I fish for bass — a buddy of mine turned me on to it... I go out mostly at night or in the early morning to fish top water (where the lures float on the water), which is a rush.

“I catch and release because I think it’s the right thing to do, and it’s good for the lake,” Warren said. “I crush all the barbs on my hooks too.”

But Warren had a humble start to his fishing days. “I was raised fishing trout with my dad in brooks and streams,” Warren said. “I was the only one in the family who did fly fishing,” he continued. “That’s all we did in the summers.” His dad would tie a nut on the end of a line and have Warren casting in the yard until his form was given the “OK”.

Warren now continues the tradition with his grandsons. “I love fishing with them,” he said.

Kyle Warren caught a 27-inch smallmouth bass on the Causeway in Colchester.

“I remember my dad coming home one night and telling my mom, that he and some other guys were starting a fishing derby,” he said.

In the end, Warren wants to see Lake Champlain International and the annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby succeed.

It was an instant success, with “a lot of local support,” Warren remembered. “The awards ceremony was held in Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium and my dad would emcee. It was totally grassroots.

“I just want to see it continue and be vibrant,” he said. “It’s been a mainstay; it’s part of our community and our lives. It’s kind of woven into the fabric of Vermont.”

SWIMMABLE, DRINKABLE, FISHABLE

The support from the Warren family continues from donations made to LCI in Eugene Warren’s (Kyle’s uncle) name. He died this past November.

Many area residents share Warren’s concerns for the health of Lake Champlain and local waterways; however, Ehlers is probably the number-one concerned citizen.

“Uncle Gene was an electrical engineer in Massachusetts. He used to bring up all these young guys from the city and they’d go out fishing with Rich Greenough (former captain of Sure Strike Charters — now run by Brian Dunkling)... My uncle was always there for me. I’d call him on the good days and on the bad — but you know what they say: ‘A bad day fishing is even better than the best day at work!’”

Before accepting the role of executive director at LCI, he was working in Burlington as the editor of Outdoors Magazine — and was a charter sailing captain on Lake Champlain, as well as a fishing and hunting guide all across the state.

“He’d miss every Father’s Day,” Warren, the youngest child of three, said. “But we were OK with it.”

Since his dad’s death, Warren’s been presenting the Junior Grand Prize awards — which are presented in honor of Ken Warren — to the youth winners of the derby.

“I’m proud of what I’ve done,” Warren said. But you won’t catch this Colchester angler doing any more public speaking than he has to.

If Warren’s not at work as the loading dock manager for the University of Vermont or helping at home, he’s probably out on Colchester’s Causeway fishing.

“I caught the biggest fish of my life out there on the causeway,” Warren

Warren, however, is concerned that his fishing days may be numbered if the lake health doesn’t start improving.

“I’m really concerned about the future of our waters… To be brutally honest, I think Lake Champlain is turning into a toilet bowl. It’s filthy and it’s everybody’s fault. We are all responsible.”

“I did not want to do it, but the organization/event was going to end and people had been begging me to not let that happen,” said Ehlers. “At the time, I had expected to do it for a couple of years — stabilize it — and hand it off.

The importance of the mission to our health and our economy, and the Father’s Day Derby to the

social fabric of the state, kept me involved all these years later.”

Since the beginning, Ehlers has been resolute; focusing the mission of LCI on keeping Lake Champlain swimmable, drinkable and fishable.

“Yes we lost some sponsors who were only focused on profiting off the resource or trying to use the organization for partisan purposes.

I was fine with that,” explained Ehlers. “I’m not here to be a corporate marketing shill. I’m here to ensure we have access to clean beaches, safe drinking waters, and healthy fisheries. Where we lost sponsors only looking to exploit the community, we gained donors and supporter committed to strengthening our communities.”

One of the things Ehlers was most proud of in 2016 was protecting people from sewage spills and cyanobacteria toxins. This year, he said the LCI team will make every effort to keep the lake’s swimmable, drinkable and fishable waters from getting any worse.

n the 2014 LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby, Shane Lamos reeled in a 20.12 pound sheepshead, setting the record for the event’s warmwater division. In 2016, he caught a 21.67 pound sheepshead, breaking his own record. Success in the Derby is not new for Shane or his LCI team, the Poachers. Together, they have won the warm-water T.E.A.M. division five different times, have placed 14 different fish in the individual species categories top 10, and have had numerous other top team finishes.

Having grown up on Champlain, the lifelong angler and derby participant knows fish–where to find them, how to catch them, and how to learn from every experience on the water.

YOU’VE WON SOME RECORDS AT THE DERBY. WHAT TECHNIQUES HAVE BROUGHT YOU AND YOUR TEAM SUCCESS? What I would say is that we fish deliberately. I think this is true with anyone who fishes, or the professional fisherman you watch on TV, or fishermen who put in a lot of time — they just pay attention to the trends they observe. Fish are part of an ecosystem, and within that ecosystem, there are patterns of behavior you can key in on. For example, most fish spawn in the rivers in early parts of the year.

So if you’re fishing in the early parts of the year, you should be fishing in the rivers. Everybody fishes with some level of analysis of the environment, so they’re paying attention to the wind and the weather patterns that are developing. I think we probably just do more of it than you’d expect.

YOU MUST HAVE PICKED UP A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE ALONG THE WAY. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN FISHING? I think we’ve been observant fisherman since we were kids. We never really recorded everything, although I know people keep fishing journals of the sort. We weren’t really big on that, but we always had it in our heads, what kind of situations we were presented with, what we did on those days, what was successful and what wasn’t. So then, on days that presented themselves decades later, we would ask ourselves: have we seen this kind of situation before? What kind of fishing days have we had under those conditions, and what should we try today? That’s the excitement of it for us — trying to go out there under any challenging circumstance, and trying to find fish. For example, I was going to go fishing out in (Winter Storm Stella), and I was thinking: what

can I learn about fish behavior in the middle of an approaching nor’easter that’s going to dump two feet of snow, and what kind of patterns would develop under those conditions? Now that’s not a pattern that’s likely to show itself again. It turns out I couldn’t go fishing because my kids’ school got cancelled. But that’s something that interests me, and it doesn’t interest everybody.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A DAY OUT ON THE LAKE? We look at a lot of variables, including anything that impacts fish behavior. We’ve looked at publications, online things, and you know — barometric pressure, lake level, lake temperature, wind direction, seasonal patterns, storm fronts coming in, storm fronts moving out. It gives us clues about the kind of behaviors (See Shane Lamos, Page 15)

we can expect from the fish. If there’s one secret to the process that people can learn from, it’s that it’s always changing. The lake is dynamic. People who are successful — just like people who are successful in life — are people who learn to be nimble, and to change as the different parameters change. That’s really our secret.

We can work with a bunch of different parameters.

And we’re big into trying new things. We’ll try anything that might produce some new information for us, or some success. We’re not the type to like — if you catch yellow perch next to somebody’s boat dock, I’m not going to go back there every day — in fact, I won’t even go back there a second day. When I’ve done it once, I know everything I need to know about it. I want to go do something else. I’m more interested in new fishing techniques. Like I said, fishing in an approaching nor’easter really appealed to me. That’s something I don’t know a lot about.

HOW WOULD YOU HAVE APPROACHED THAT SITUATION? The biggest challenge would have been finding a spot to fish that’s relatively safe, and that I wanted to learn about. My first love of fishing is Lake Champlain, but the lake was a mess because there wasn’t a lot of useable ice, and there wasn’t a lot of open water, either. I would have been searching for some open water that’s safe to fish, and then once I got there, I would have been thinking about what those types of conditions would mean for the fish, and the bait fish that they’re trying to consume — whatever they’re eating — it could be crustaceans or something on the bottom, too. So I’d just start scanning though techniques.

HOW OFTEN DO YOUR INSTINCTS AND RESEARCH LEAD YOU TO A SPOTON PLACE WHERE THERE ARE A LOT OF FISH? It used to be never. Recently, it’s gotten a lot better. It’s a team effort. So it’s not me, it’s the whole team. When the team ends up powwowing over these spots, we often have discussions, like —

‘What do you think about this?

This is what I’m seeing, here’s what I want to try.’ We definitely have someone on our team who’s got more of a feel for what to do, who we don’t question that much.

Sometimes he’ll say things that are just outlandish, like ‘I think we should go fish off Mary’s dock.’

There’s no fish off Mary’s dock. If I said it, that would be the reaction, but if he said it, everyone would go. I think he’s part fish.

I can’t even imagine, and I can’t describe all the things that I’ve learned about the lake. My colleagues who work in biology at the lake, I ask questions of them, because I’m very interested in the fishes of the lake.

YOU’RE A SCIENTIST — A CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR AT ST. MICHEAL’S COLLEGE, SPECIFICALLY. DO YOU THINK THAT SCIENTIFIC MINDSET CARRIES OVER INTO YOUR FISHING? Oh, there’s no doubt. You probably don’t talk to many fishermen who talk about fishing the way I do.

For me, after 20 minutes, I want to learn something new. So let’s pull up the anchor, and let’s go try something different. I always want to be learning, and that’s part of my role in teaching, too. The people I fish with have the same mental mindset, which is perfect.

So I’m not the only scientist on the team. We’re all interested in learning new things.

Even with my kids, sometimes we’ll go fishing and we won’t catch any fish, but we’ll be so excited when we get home with how much we’ve learned at the end of the day. We didn’t catch anything, but we explored new areas and new techniques. And when you don’t catch fish, that’s data, too, right?

That’s a good lesson for people, that when you don’t catch fish, you learn something. Learning is the way we’re going to get better.

If I wanted to catch fish every day I could, but that doesn’t get me excited to go fishing. I go fishing to explore the lake, and to learn.

I want to know as much as I can about the lake.

CAN YOU NAME A FEW THINGS YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT THE LAKE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS OF FISHING?

Who goes out and tries to catch a logperch? It’s a giant minnow species that’s actually catchable on hook and line. But I just like the idea: where do logperch reside?

Can I find a school of logperch?

What would they bite on? Where would they be today?

One thing that’s really a testament of the force of the derby, and people who built the derby, was that they recruited so many fishes.

So sometimes in these derbies, it’s just bass, or it’s just salmon — the fish that people think are sexy. But the derby has carp, it has catfish, it has sheepshead. Who wants to catch those? I do. I want to try something different. So the derby gives you an option, it says here are 13 or 14 fish — pick whichever one you want to catch, and we’ll create a point system that makes it equitable to compete against each other. What a brilliant design that is. It’s the only derby I do. It’s the only derby I put my time and energy into. It’s what drew me in early on, that you could literally go out and catch anything.

DO YOU THINK THAT THAT’S WHY YOU’VE BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL WITH THE DERBY? BECAUSE IT GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE ALL YOUR DIFFERENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT FISH YOU’VE CAUGHT? That is certainly the reason. If this was a standard, formatted bassfishing derby, I’m not going to

I don’t know exactly what year I started it, because I fished with my father when I was younger for quite a few of the earlier derbies.

I probably started fishing in the mid-’90s; been fishing with the same group of guys I’ve been fishing with now for 18 years. As a group, we’ve had some success as individuals and as teammates.

More success as time has gone on. We’ve gotten luckier, as I like to say. More big fish. And quite honestly, until a couple of years ago, I had never gotten a fish in the derby that had actually got into the top ten. I hadn’t gotten lucky until 2014, when I finally caught a fish that made it on the top 10 board. I was pretty excited.

And then it happened again this year. It felt pretty good to beat my own record.

IT SOUNDS LIKE FISHING HAS BEEN A LIFELONG PASSION FOR YOU. I grew up around fishing, and I grew up around the lake.

Weekends in the summer were time spent fishing with the family, so I grew up on the lake every day since I was as young as I can remember. Three, four years old, they had me out there.

We’d fish to eat, we’d fish for fish to catch and release, we did all of it. That definitely fueled my early love for fishing, which is something that I did all the time. As I’ve gotten older I’ve met other friends who have had similar experiences, and we fish together. The guys I fish with now were best friends of mine in high school. We fish together now as adults, and sometimes we take our families out together. I have a son, two daughters, and my wife, and we go out all the time.

It’s fun to see the next generation getting excited about fishing.

Fishing is still part of our lives, it’s something we do as much as we can — evenings, the weekend.

We swim and do other things, too. We just love the lake. It’s a great fishery.

9. A $10.00 fee will be charged for any requested duplicate registrations due to loss or theft.

10. Requests for refunds due to accidental duplicate registration purchase will be considered only if made in writing and postmarked on or before June 30, 2017.

INTEGRITY STATEMENT

WITNESSES

1. Each LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby presented

by Yamaha participant and all registered affirming witnesses, must submit to a polygraph (lie-detector) examination upon request of Father’s Day Derby Officials, or he/she shall be disqualified. Based on the results of this examination, the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors reserves the right to disqualify the contestant. In the event that LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby presented by Yamaha Officials disqualify a contestant, any and all fish which were offered by that contestant during the LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby presented

by Yamaha shall also be disallowed. Further, any contestant who has ever been disqualified

by LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby presented by Yamaha Officials shall be permanently barred from participation in any and all future fishing derbies promoted by Lake Champlain International, Inc. 2. The LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby presented

by Yamaha will hereafter be referred to as the “Father’s Day Derby.”

REGISTRATION

3. Prior to the Father’s Day Derby, each contestant must purchase a valid individual, junior or family registration, either directly from Lake Champlain International, Inc. or through one of the LCI Derby 2017 Official Retail Registration Outlets.

4. All participants must hold a valid fishing license for the waters they are fishing as required by state law.

5. All persons aboard the same vessel/boat must be registered in the Father’s Day Derby. No one is allowed to be on the boat if they are not registered, regardless whether or not they are fishing.

6. A family registration may be purchased for the Father’s Day Derby and includes the following: registrant, spouse and their legally dependent children seventeen (17) years of age or younger at opening of the Father’s Day Derby. Only one registration form will be issued per family which covers all family registrants. Each registered family member is eligible for Father’s Day Derby prizes; however, any random drawings to determine prize winners will be executed according to the rule of one chance per registration form, not per person registered (lottery prizes excluded).

7. Father’s Day Derby registrations must be purchased no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017, at specified 2017 Official Retail Registration Outlets. VISA and MasterCard applications will be accepted by telephone, facsimile, or internet through May 31, 2017.

8. Father’s Day Derby registration forms are not transferable. They must be presented on each occasion a fish is offered, and they may not be

REGISTERING THE FISH

14. CONTESTANTS and AFFIRMING WITNESSES must complete a weigh-in form furnished by the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors at the weigh station. Only official weigh-in forms transmitted to LCI Derby Headquarters at 531 Main Street, Colchester, VT 05446, from official 2017 Father’s Day Derby weigh stations will be accepted.

15. The contestant is responsible for the accuracy of the information about his or her entered fish as it is transcribed on the official weigh-in form. Once the contestant has affixed his or her signature to the weigh-in form, he or she relinquishes all rights to challenge the accuracy of the data.

16. Weigh-in data as transcribed, and signed to, on the official weigh-in form at the weigh station will not be considered final until all entered information has been transmitted to LCI Derby Headquarters at 531 Main Street, Colchester, VT 05446 and reviewed, subjected to biological feasibility scrutiny, and accepted by Father’s Day Derby Officials. The signature of a Father’s Day Derby weigh attendant on an official weigh-in form does not in and of itself constitute the final determination concerning any entry.

17. Each Father’s Day Derby participant and all registered affirming witnesses, must submit to a polygraph (lie-detector) examination upon request of Father’s Day Derby Officials, or he/she shall be disqualified. Based on the results of this examination, the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors reserves the right to disqualify the contestant. BOUNDARIES/HOURS

18. The boundaries of the Father’s Day Derby shall include: a. Lake Champlain Proper as defined in the New York Freshwater Fishing Official Regulations Guide and Vermont Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Laws and Guide. b. Southern Boundary: Lock Number 12 at

Whitehall, NY c. Northern Boundary: Canadian border.

19. Any waters fished must have reasonable and convenient access by public right-of-way. Anglers may not fish in waters that are only accessible by private permission or limited right-of-way, or that cannot otherwise be reasonably accessed by all participants.

20. Father’s Day Derby hours: Opening: 12:01 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2017 Closing: 4:00 p.m., Monday, June 19, 2017 21. Father’s Day Derby Weigh Station hours: a. Weigh station hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, at any of the regular weigh stations (listed on locator map). Three weigh stations will operate with extended hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and three weigh stations will operate 24-hours a day beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Saturday June 17, 2017. All weigh stations close at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017.

22. All fish entered in the Father’s Day Derby must be caught upon hook and line and retrieved by rod and reel within the boundaries of the Father’s Day Derby.

23. Fish must be caught between 12:01 a.m.

Saturday, June 17, 2017 and prior to 4:00 p.m.

Monday, June 19, 2017. All fish must be presented to a Father’s Day Derby weigh station no later than 4:00 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2017.

24. Any angler found importing fish from another body of water, misrepresenting a fish’s weight, attempting to alter a fish’s weight or manipulate the fish in any manner to achieve a change in weight will be subject to legal proceedings.

ANGLING REGULATION

25. Father’s Day Derby contestants shall only enter fish caught within the derby boundary and hours 26. The same angler must cast and hook, or, in the case of a trolled release, fight, and bring the fish to net unaided by any other person. No other person may touch any part of the tackle during the playing of the fish, or give aid other than taking the leader for landing purposes.

27. Only two (2) lines are permitted per angler at any time during the derby. This applies for both the Vermont and New York side of the lake. This rule applies regardless of state regulation.

28. Father’s Day Derby contestants may enter one or more fish.

29. All contestants must follow local and federal angling laws.

CONDITION OF FISH

30. All fish must be whole, fresh and never been frozen. No gaffed, snagged or foul-hooked fish will be accepted for entry. All fish entered will be marked for identification purposes, and may at the sole discretion of the Father’s Day Derby Officials become the property of the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors. Any angler found misrepresenting a fish’s weight or attempting to alter a fish’s weight will be subject to legal proceedings.

31. In the interest of conservation of fish species, anglers are encouraged to release all fish caught in the Father’s Day Derby. The intent is to release all fish entered alive, and anglers are encouraged to properly handle live fish. For the purposes of the Father’s Day Derby, a Father’s Day Derby-eligible fish shall be determined to be alive if it is the sole discretion and judgment of the Weigh Station Captain that the fish shows any reasonable signs of life. Any entered fish which is considered to be alive under this criterion shall be validated for a 5% LCI Derby Prize Point bonus. The Weigh Station Captain’s determination shall be made at the time of weigh-in, and shall be considered final.

ELIGIBLE SPECIES & SIZES

32. The seven eligible species categories in the Father’s Day Derby are: a. Cold Water Division: Lake Trout Species Category Atlantic Salmon Species Category, to include: Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, Steelhead and Brown Trout b. Cool Water Division: Walleye Species Category Northern Pike Species Category Smallmouth Bass Species Category c. Warm Water Division: Largemouth Bass Species Category Extraordinary Species Category, to include: Bowfin, Catfish and Sheepshead (Freshwater Drum) 33. All Fish and Wildlife laws of the applicable state, where fishing shall be followed during the Father’s Day Derby. Fish which do not conform to all Fish and Wildlife laws of the applicable state shall be disqualified. PRIZEWINNER DETERMINATION

35. It is the responsibility of the prize-winner to collect his/her prize(s). Prizes, or parts thereof, not claimed

by July 15, 2017 will become the property of the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors.

36. All tax liability is the burden of the recipient of the prize. Additionally, in accordance with state and federal authorities, Lake Champlain International, Inc. may be required to collect taxes before prizes can be presented.

37. The LCI Derby Prize Point value of each fish entered in the Father’s Day Derby shall be determined by multiplying the weight of the fish by the Species Points for that species. In addition, all Father’s Day Derby-eligible fish from the seven major species categories which are entered alive and relinquished to Weigh Station Captains shall receive a 5% LCI Derby Prize Point bonus (see Rule #32). Live fish shall be given priority at weigh-in.

38. Prize Point values for each of the eligible species are as follows. a. If the fish is determined to be alive at the time of weigh-in, add an additional 5%, or 22, bonus points. Thus, the entry earns the angler 440 + 22 = 462 LCI Derby Prize Points.

39. 1st Place Species Prizes shall be awarded, for each of the seven (7) eligible species categories (see Rule #33), to any Father’s Day Derby registrant who enters one fish from that category which amasses the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points for a single fish. Subsequent Species Prize places shall be likewise determined, in order, according to total LCI Derby Prize Points.

40. The Junior Division Prizes shall be awarded to the Father’s Day Derby registrant who is fourteen (14) years of age or under on June 17, 2017 and who enters one fish from any of the eligible species in the Father’s Day Derby (see Rule #33), between the opening and closing hours of the Father’s Day Derby, that amasses the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points. Subsequent Junior Grand Prize places shall be likewise determined, in order, according to total LCI Derby Prize Points. Only a junior angler’s highest scoring fish per Junior Division will be considered eligible for an award. Awards will be made for Cold, Cool and Warm Divisions. a. In addition to the eligible derby species, junior anglers may also enter yellow perch that are a minimum of 12 inches in length. There will be a special award category for junior yellow perch.

41. Early Bird Special. a. Anyone who registers for the 36th Father’s Day Derby presented by Yamaha on or before March 31, 2017, will be entered to win a Smugglers Notch Resort vacation package valued at up to

42. Ladies of the Lake, prizes from Cynthea’s Spa a. The female angler who is both registered in the Father’s Day Derby, and catches the fish that scores the most points in the Cold, Cool, or Warm Water Division, shall receive a prize package valued at over $500.

43. Alaskan Fishing Adventure prize package a. Package is awarded to one person and is for two travelers. b. Entries will be issued by registration number. i. All Individual registrants receive one entry ii. All Junior registrants receive one entry ii. Family registrations • Family registrations receive one entry, regardless of how many family members are on the registration • All fish weighed in from anglers registered under a family registration, and that qualify for bonus points, will be attributed to the family registration number.

• In the event that the winning registration number drawn belongs to a family registration, the first named individual on the registration will be considered the winner and be delegated to receive the prize. c. The LCI Board of Directors reserves the right to change the advertised itinerary and details of the trip if it is deemed necessary. In the event that changes are made, the total value of the trip will remain the same. d. In the event that the winner is unable to go on the trip, it can be transferred to another traveler. e. Package will include guides, lodging, and a cash stipend for food, travel, and other incurred expenses. f. Approximate value of the guides and lodging is $3,500 per person, for a total value of approximately $7,000. g. Total cash stipend awarded will be $3,500 and may be split between the two travelers for a total of $1750 per person. h. Winners will coordinate directly with the appointed Tour Agent to plan the trip. They are responsible for booking their own travel. The awarded cash stipend can be used to pay for travel and food. i. Winner is responsible for license fees, gratuities, travel, food, and any expenses beyond lodging, guides. j. The intention of the cash stipend it be used to pay for travel, food expenses, licensing, and gratuities, but is not restricted to this purpose. k. To win this prize package, a registered angler must have their name drawn at random during the Awards Ceremony for the 2017 Father’s Day Derby. l. Registered anglers are given bonus entries for the drawing based on the following criteria: i. Angler receives two entries for each of their fish placing in 1st – 10th in any adult species category at the end of the derby ii. Angler receives one entry for each of their fish placing 11th – 25th place in any species category at the end of the derby. iii. Each angler on the first place T.E.A.M. in the Cold, Cool, and Warm Water Divisions at the end of the derby will receive three entries. iv. Each angler on the second place T.E.A.M in the Cold, Cool, and Warm Water Divisions at the end of the derby will receive two entries. v. For example, Bob’s two salmon end the derby in 22nd and 7th places. He also signed up for the cash extras.

Bob will get 1 entry for being a registered participant in the derby, 1 entry for his 22nd-place fish, 2 entries for his 7th-place fish, and 1 bonus entry for having the Cash Extras. He now has 5 entries to win the Fishing Adventure package.

44. LCI Anglers of the Year a. Only those participants officially entered in the Father’s Day Derby are eligible to compete. b. Anglers will compete individually, and are eligible to compete in any division – Cold Water, Cool Water or Warm Water (see rule #33 for species breakdown).

One winner will be announced in each division. c. Anglers must enter three fish – one fish each day of the derby – that amass the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points in either the Cold Water, Cool Water or the Warm Water Division (see rule #26 for more on point calculation). Only the angler’s single highest scoring fish per division per day for each of the three days of competition will be included in their final point total. d. Each fish entered MUST be weighed on the same day it was caught to qualify for Angler of the Year. For example, a fish caught at 11:45 p.m.

Saturday, but weighed in at 12:45am Sunday, will still count towards species and T.E.A.M. prizes, but not toward Angler of the Year. e. Throughout the Father’s Day Derby, our computerized results program will keep track of the single highest scoring fish per division per angler for each of the three days, automatically replacing lowerpoint fish when a higher-point fish is registered. Lowerpoint fish will still be considered for any other prize for which an angler is eligible. f. This is a non-exclusive prize, which means it can be won in addition to whatever other prize(s) the angler might also earn. g. Tiebreakers will be determined first by the greatest number of fish entered and second by the single highest-scoring fish entered. If still a tie, the prize shall be split. h. Failure by any claimant(s) to comply with the terms and conditions of the Father’s Day Derby Official Rules and Regulations will render the claim void and no prize will be paid. i. As a condition for claim consideration an investigation will be conducted if, in Lake Champlain International, Inc.’s sole opinion, such action is warranted. Such an investigation will include, but will not be limited to, requiring the winner and/or witness to submit to and pass in a conclusive manner polygraph examinations.

45. $1,000 Council Crazy Carp Challenge. a. $1,000 will be awarded to the angler registered in the Father’s Day Derby, who registers the largest Carp by weight at a Father’s Day Derby weigh station, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. June 17 and 4:00 p.m. June 19, 2017. All other Father’s Day Derby rules apply.

2017 CASH EXTRA PRIZES

46. 2017 Cash Extras include the Super Bonus prizes, Tournament Record Double Downs (WIZN Big Bad Bass; WOKO Big Station Salmon; Lakeshore Ace Laker; Windjammer Walleye; Ray’s Seafood Market and Restaurant Sheepshead; VT Field Sports Northern Pike; Shelburne Camping Bowfin; 3rd Alarm Charters Catfish); the $10,000 Coca-Cola Classic Lake Record Reward; and the Campaign for Vermont Tagged Fish Bonus.

47. General requisite qualifications for Cash Extra Prize awards: a. Fish must be eligible for the Father’s Day Derby and registered ALIVE.

b. In order to be eligible for a 2017 Cash Extras prize, the fish or fishes must be caught in compliance with all state and federal rules and regulations as well as the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Rules and Regulations (no electric reels are allowed) and all other rules contained herein. c. The angler must have purchased the 2017 Cash Extras option at time of registration. d. At the request of LCI Officials, any winner must submit to and pass, in a conclusive manner, a polygraph examination as a condition precedent to claim consideration. e. The polygraph examiner shall be chosen by Lake Champlain International, Inc. The polygraph examiner shall make the final determination regarding passing or failing the examination. f. Fish must be caught by an official entrant in the Father’s Day Derby during official Father’s Day Derby hours. g. If there is a claim, any requisite paper work must be completed in its entirety and presented the same day as the catch to LCI Derby Headquarters located at 531 Main Street, Colchester, VT 05446. Lake Champlain International, Inc. will provide any requisite paper work. h. Eligible contestants: Only those participants officially entered in the Father’s Day Derby who comply with any and all Father’s Day Derby rules and regulations shall be eligible to compete for a prize. i. Failure by any claimant(s) to comply with any and all Rules and Regulations of the Father’s Day will render the claim void and no prize will be paid. j. As a condition for claim consideration an investigation will be conducted if, in Lake Champlain International, Inc.’s sole opinion, such action is warranted. Such an investigation will include, but will not be limited to, requiring the winner and/or witness to submit to and pass in a conclusive manner polygraph examinations. k. The polygraph examiner shall be chosen by Lake Champlain International, Inc. The polygraph examiner shall make the final determination regarding passing or failing the examination. l. Winner is responsible for all state and federal taxes associated with winning a prize.

48. Super Bonus Awards a. The LCI Cold Water Super Bonus Grand Prize shall be awarded to the Father’s Day Derby registrant who (a.) has purchased the 2017 Cash Extras option in addition to his or her basic Father’s Day Derby registration, and who (b.) enters a SINGLE fish, from any of the four eligible Cold Water species in the tournament (see Rule #33), that amasses the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points. b. The LCI Cool Water Super Bonus Grand Prize shall be awarded to the Father’s Day Derby registrant who (a.) has purchased the 2017 Cash Extras option in addition to his or her basic Father’s Day Derby registration, and who (b.) enters a SINGLE fish, from any of the three eligible Cool Water species in the LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby presented by Yamaha (see Rule #33), that amasses the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points. c. The LCI Warm Water Super Bonus Grand Prize shall be awarded to the Father’s Day Derby registrant who (a.) has purchased the 2017 Cash Extras option in addition to his or her basic Father’s Day Derby registration, and who (b) enters a SINGLE fish, from any of the four eligible Warm Water species in the LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby presented by Yamaha (see Rule #33), that amasses the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points. d. Qualifying species are: Atlantic Salmon; Bowfin; Lake Trout; Largemouth Bass; Smallmouth Bass; Northern Pike; Channel Catfish; Sheepshead c. To qualify for this prize, the angler must be a registrant of the 2017 Father’s Day Derby and have selected and paid for the Cash Extras options. d. For the purposes of this award, the Lake Records, as defined by Vermont Fish and Wildlife, are

In the event that the lake record in more than one species category is broken, the fish that was reported the earliest will be declared the winner. i. In the event that a record for one species is broken more than once by fish of different weights, then the largest fish at the end of the derby will be declared the winner. j. Only one (1) $10,000 prize will be awarded.

51. LCI Tagged Fish Bonus a. To qualify for this prize, the angler must be a registrant of the 2017 Father’s Day Derby and have selected and paid for the Cash Extras options. b. Any angler who catches an LCI tagged fish during derby hours shall receive $1,000 cash. c. Qualifying tag numbers are 307713; 307714; 307716; 307717; 307718; 307719; 307720; 307721; 307722; 307723; 307724; 307737; 307738; 307739; 307740; 307741; 307742; 307743; 307744; 307745; 307746; 307747; 307748; 307749; 307750. d. Eligible Species: Smallmouth Bass; Walleye; Northern Pike; Lake Trout; Atlantic Salmon; Largemouth Bass; Sheepshead; Catfish; Bowfin.

T.E.A.M. PRIZES

52. The T.E.A.M. (Two Entries, Any Member) Prize shall be awarded to that Father’s Day Derby T.E.A.M. which (1) has purchased a T.E.A.M. registration in addition to Father’s Day Derby registrations for each of the individual members of the T.E.A.M., and (2) collectively enters two fish, both from within either the Cold Water Division, Cool Water Division or the Warm Water Division, that when added together amass the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points. The two fish may be caught by a single member, or by different members of the T.E.A.M., but must each be caught according to the Angling Regulation (Rule #26).

53. All 2017 Father’s Day Derby T.E.A.M.s shall be governed by the following rules: a. The T.E.A.M. (Two Entries, Any Member) will be composed of at least one (1) and not more than four (4) members. b. Prior to the tournament, each T.E.A.M. member must also purchase a valid individual, junior or family registration. c. Each T.E.A.M. member must be listed on the T.E.A.M. registration form d. T.E.A.M. registrations must be purchased no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017, at specified retail outlets. Mailed T.E.A.M. applications must be postmarked no later than May 15, 2017.

VISA and MasterCard T.E.A.M. applications will be accepted by telephone, facsimile and online through May 31, 2017. All T.E.A.M. members must be listed on the registration form at the time of purchase. e. A contestant may be a member of one and only one T.E.A.M. f. Each T.E.A.M. shall choose a Captain in whose name the T.E.A.M. will be registered. Also, if a T.E.A.M. name is not indicated, one may be assigned. g. T.E.A.M. members may divide themselves into not more than two (2) groups while fishing.

This means a limit of 2 boats per T.E.A.M., or shore anglers fishing in no more than two groups. In all cases, the witness requirement continues to apply (see Rule #’s 13 &14). h. LCI Derby Prize Point Determination Example for T.E.A.Ms: 7.0-pound Atlantic salmon (not alive): 7.0 x 71 = 497 LCI Derby Prize Points.

10.0-pound lake trout (alive): 10.0 x 36 = 360 LCI Derby Prize Points, plus 5% bonus for being alive gives a total of 378 LCI Derby Prize Points (see example, Rule #33).

Total for above example is 497 + 378 = 875 Father’s Day Derby Prize Points.

MISCELLANEOUS

54. Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board members and staff and their immediate families, sponsors, and officials and volunteers involved in the daily operation of the Father’s Day Derby, are not eligible to participate.

55. All contestants agree to give the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors full rights for promotional or commercial purposes to any photograph of themselves taken by the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors or its duly authorized agents.

56. Each contestant agrees to hold the Lake Champlain International, Inc. Board of Directors, Father’s Day Derby sponsors, their agents, employees and volunteers harmless from any liability of any nature for any injuries and/or damage suffered by the contestant in conjunction with the Father’s Day Derby.

57. All entries are subject to review by Father’s Day Derby Officials. Lake Champlain International, Inc. reserves the right to change any entry that it believes to be in error (see Rule #16). The decision of the Father’s Day Derby Officials is final. In the event of a tie, unless otherwise specified, the first fish weighed in will be declared the winner. All prize winners will be posted at LCI Derby Headquarters, 531 Main Street, Colchester, Vermont, at noon on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. Participants who wish to contest posted Father’s Day Derby standings must do so by presenting a valid weigh-in form and registration form to Father’s Day Derby Officials prior to 2:00 p.m., June 20, 2017.

Prizes will be announced, and lower-tier prizes will be presented, at the LCI Awards Ceremony on June 23, 2017. Results will be considered final at 5 p.m. on June 20, 2017, and all remaining prizes will be awarded subsequent to that final determination.

58. Participants must present challenges to the final standings, in writing, between noon and 2:00 p.m. June 20, 2017 at LCI Derby Headquarters, 531 Main Street, Colchester, VT 05446.

59. Lake Champlain International, Inc. reserves the right to change these rules at any time without notice.

60. Dispute Resolution; Arbitration. In the event of any dispute between the parties with respect to any matter covered by these rules, the parties shall first use their best efforts to resolve such dispute among themselves. If the parties are unable to resolve the dispute within thirty (30) calendar days after the commencement of efforts to resolve the dispute, the dispute will be submitted to arbitration in accordance with the following provisions. The arbitrator in such arbitration may rule on any and all claims or controversies for which a federal or state court would be authorized to grant relief, whether or not arising out of, relating to, or associated with the activities of Lake Champlain International, Inc. All claims shall be determined under the law of the State of Vermont, without regard to conflict of law principles.

61. Either Lake Champlain International, Inc. or the Father’s Day Derby participant may submit any matter referred to above to arbitration by notifying the other party, in writing, of such dispute. Within ten (10) days after receipt of such notice, Lake Champlain International, Inc. and the Father’s Day Derby participant shall designate in writing one arbitrator to resolve the dispute; provided, however, that if such parties cannot agree on an arbitrator within such ten (10) day period, the American Arbitration Association shall select the arbitrator. The arbitrator so designated shall not be an employee, consultant, officer, director, or member of any party or an affiliate of or relation to any party.

62. Within fifteen (15) days after the designation of the arbitrator, the arbitrator, Lake Champlain International, Inc. and the Father’s Day Derby participant shall meet, at which time shall be required to set forth in writing all disputed issues and a proposed ruling on each such issue.

63. The arbitrator shall set a date for a hearing, which shall be no later than thirty (30) days after the submission of written proposals pursuant to subsection (b) immediately above, to discuss each of the issues identified by Lake Champlain International, Inc. and the Father’s Day Derby participant. Each such party shall have the right to be represented by counsel.

The arbitration shall be governed by the rules of the American Arbitration Association; provided, however, that the arbitrator shall have sole discretion with regard to the admissibility of evidence.

64. The arbitrator shall use his or her best efforts to rule on each disputed issue within thirty (30) days after the completion of the hearings described in subsection (c) immediately above. Any ruling of the arbitrator shall be accompanied by a written opinion of the arbitrator detailing the arbitrator’s reasoning for such ruling. The determination of the arbitrator as to the resolution of any dispute shall be binding and conclusive upon all parties. All rulings of the arbitrator shall be in writing and shall be delivered to the parties.

65. The Arbitrator shall award costs and expenses, including but not limited to reasonable attorney’s fees and arbitration fees and costs.

66. Any arbitration pursuant to this section shall be conducted in Chittenden County, Vermont. Any arbitration award may be entered in and enforced by any court having jurisdiction thereover, and the parties hereby consent and commit themselves to the jurisdiction of the courts of the State of Vermont and any United States District Court in Vermont for purposes of the enforcement of any arbitration award.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF ARBITRATION

THESE RULES CONTAIN AN AGREEMENT TO ARBITRATE. THE PARTIES UNDERSTAND THAT NEITHER WILL BE ABLE TO BRING A LAWSUIT CONCERNING ANY DISPUTE THAT MAY ARISE WHICH IS COVERED BY THE ARBITRATION AGREEMENT, UNLESS IT INVOLVES A QUESTION OF CONSTITUTIONAL OR CIVIL RIGHTS. INSTEAD, WE AGREE TO SUBMIT ANY SUCH DISPUTE TO AN IMPARTIAL ARBITRATOR.

nother Fish Chowder Championship came and went in the spring of 2016. The annual event was a great success!

Congratulations to winner Andy Cassidy of Our House Bistro in Winooski, Vt. — he took the prize in 2015 too. Bob Lesnikoski and Jim Britch came in second and third; their chowders were so good, there had to be a tie-breaker round. Judges for the 2016 contest were Luis Porter from Vermont Fish and Wildlife, Chef Doug Paine from Hotel Vermont, Vermont journalist Candace Page, Paul Dunkling from Ray’s Seafood Marketplace, and Keele Smith from WPTZ. Each year this event helps get the word out that Lake Champlain is not only beautiful, but also a great source for local food. Try your hand at these fantastic, flavorful chowders. Bonus points if you catch your own fish!

LOCAL FISH CHOWDER

By Chef Andy Cassidy (of Our House Bistro, Winooski) INGREDIENTS:

2 qts Butterworks Farm heavy cream fish stock 3 Hudak Farm large onions, large dice 1 head celery, chopped 3 lbs Burnt Rock Farm Andouille sausage, cubed 6 cups Laughing Child Farm sweet potatoes, large dice 6 cups red potatoes 2 1/2 lbs Lake Champlain (Ray’s Seafood) white perch 2 lbs King Arthur Flour 2 lbs Cabot butter Hazendale Farm fresh garlic, minced Salt, pepper, fresh thyme, cayenne to taste 1 lb VT Smoke and Cure bacon

DIRECTIONS:

Separately roast perch, cut potatoes, bacon and sausage and set aside. Sautee onions, celery, garlic, salt, peppers and thyme, set aside. Melt butter and add flour to make a roux, set aside. Heat water to boil, lower heat and add clam base. Over heat, add roux in small amounts to stock to thicken.

Gently add roasted ingredients and heavy cream.

FORAGERS CHOWDER WITH A HINT OF SPRING

1 1/4 lbs Lake Champlain hot smoked lake trout 1 lb Vermont wild Chanterelles 1 lb AH Mushrooms: shiitake mushroom Vermont Wild Dried; porchini (1 oz), pheasant back (1 1/2 oz), black trumpet (1/2 oz) 6 qts chicken stock 2 Flat Lander Farm duck breasts (keep fat)

DIRECTIONS:

Make mushroom stock: Heat homemade chicken stock (unsalted). Add porcini, pheasant back and black trumpet mushrooms. Simmer on low until reduced by 1/4.

Let stand for an hour. Strain.

Make a Veloute: Heat the mushroom stock. In a sauce pan heat butter; when frothy add flour. Whisk on medium heat about 3 minutes (do not allow to brown). Stir in mushroom stock. Simmer about 30 minutes until reduced and satiny.

Make chowder: Sear duck breasts in a cast iron pan on medium,

1 Maple Wind Farm celeriac 2 1/4 lbs Burnt Rock Farm red potatoes 4 Bear Root Farm leeks and shallots 8 tbsp Mountain Home Farm unsalted butter 8 tbsp Rogers Farmstead bolted flour 1 1/2 qts Sweet Rowan Farm whole milk 1 pt Kimball Farm cream Jericho Settlers Farm pea shoots skin side down for 8 minutes or until crispy, flip for another 2 minutes. Set aside.

Mince shallots and shiitake mushrooms. Heat 2 tablespoons of duck fat and sweat the shallots with a generous grind of black pepper (no salt).

Add the mushrooms and cook until soft. Pulse mixture in a food processor. Whisk into the hot stock and reduce until satiny (about 30 minutes).

Roast 1/2 pound of shiitake mushrooms until golden.

Dice potatoes and duck. Matchstick chop 3/4 of celeriac and steam. Sautee chanterelles. Add to the veloute and simmer so flavors can blend.

Off heat add: cream, whole milk and trout (reserve 3/4 lb trout). Refrigerate overnight. Serve with reserved smoked trout and pea shoots on top.

1-2 lbs Northern pike caught 1 lb Chappelle’s white potatoes 1/2 lbs VT Smoke and Cure uncured bacon 2 small homegrown yellow onions 1 tbsp homegrown dried basil 1 cup Jericho Settlers’ Farm celery root 3 tbs Cabot salted butter

DIRECTIONS:

Fry bacon until almost crisp. Drain off all but 2 tablespoons of drippings.

Cut bacon into bite sized pieces.

Peel and dice celery root. Add to bacon and fry until almost tender.

Add chopped onion, fry another couple of minutes. Add diced potatoes and fry until nearly tender.

Add pike in bite-sized pieces. Fry, turning gently, until fish is cooked through.

Add garlic, salt, pepper, parsley, basil,

1-2 cups Kimball Brook Farm whole milk 1 sprig homegrown fresh parsley 1 clove garlic 1 tsp fresh ground black and red pepper 1 tsp pink Himalayan medium coarse sea salt 1 leaf bay leaf

bay leaf and continue to cook for a couple of minutes.

Add room-temperature milk, simmer for a few minutes slowly stirring; make sure to not boil the milk.

Keep on very low heat for at least 15 minutes, or an hour in a crockpot. Cooking slowly in a crockpot overnight is best.

Garnish with chopped chives or green tail onions, and Olde Cape Cod Oyster Crackers.
