The LCI Derby Guide
It’s time to CELEBRATE 40 YEARS!
This year marks the 40th year for our flagship fundraiser –the LCI Father’s Day Derby presented by Yamaha.
There is no disputing that 2020 and beginning of 2021 have been economically challenging times, perhaps the most difficult any of us have experienced. Despite this, the 2021 derby promises to be as good as the previous 39, due in large part to the incredible commitment of our sponsors who are stepping up regardless of the challenges within their own industries.
BY JAMES EHLERSIt is also difficult to express in words our gratitude for the commitment of our weigh station staff, who have truly gone beyond to ensure an enjoyable and safe event for all involved.
Outside of the derbies, Lake Champlain International has been working tirelessly for the benefit of the anglers and the fish of the entire Lake Champlain watershed. There are many serious threats to the lake fishery; sea lamprey infestation, cormorant overpopulation, and pollution are just the ones we
hear about every day. Yet the benefits of fishing to the community, the lake and the environment are more numerous than anyone gives it credit for. It is our mission to promote these benefits, and fight against the threats that would diminish the great fishing opportunities on Lake Champlain.
The derbies are a huge part of this mission, and we thank you for being a part of it. Your participation in the LCI Derbies allows us to work hard throughout the year towards our mission of clean water and good fishing. It is also our goal to bring you the most enjoyable derby experience possible, and we welcome your feedback.
Welcome to the 40th Annual FATHER’S DAY FISHING DERBY
For as little as $35 for an individual or $64 for an entire family, you can have a great day of fun on the water and have a chance at winning some of the $150,000 in cash and prizes.*

A FATHER’S DAY TRADITION:
FISH HARD & HAVE FUN
BY ELSIE LYNN PARINICan you believe that the Lake Champlain International Father’s Day Fishing Derby is 40 years old this year? Annual events like this become part of our lives and have a way of marking the passing of time — and sometimes making us feel a little, well, old. For Dave Bartlett, this Father’s Day marks 38 consecutive years that he’s fished this derby.
“I fished a bass tournament in 1979 down at the southern end of the lake,” Lake Champlain that
is, remembered Bartlett, who’s 63 now. “It was a two-day tournament in Vergennes that I actually won. That kicked it off… A couple of years later I received a paper with the LCI advertised and asked a friend (Warren Croft) if he wanted to fish it with me. And I haven’t missed one since.”
Bartlett, who lives in Upton, Mass., began coming up to Vermont to fish the Father’s Day Derby when he was 26. Every year since, he’s organized a group of guys to come up to West Shore Cabins in North Hero to fish together.
“Back then we were really competitive about fishing,” he laughed. “Now we relax and enjoy the camaraderie… It’s a reason to get together.”
The fishing begins for Bartlett the weekend before the derby when his 25-year-old twin sons, Matt and Ty, join him along with a few other friends for some “fun fishing.” As the derby approaches, the rest of the group — this year, Bartlett calculates about 10 people — will assemble at the cabins.
“It grows and changes through the years,” he said. “It’s not always the same guys, but there’s a core group that always comes.”
The core group includes: Mike Andreotti, Gordon Wetmore, Lou Perrotti, Peter Lemon, Dan Burkholder, Stan Rutkowski, Dave Gavin, Bartlett (of course), and his nephew Tim. They hail from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine.
“They’re always a fun bunch,” said Donna Macdonald, who manages West Shore Cabins with her brother Bruce Mashtare. “We’ll go down and sit with them, have a cocktail or two and hear about all their fishing stories.”
“Remember the time a friend of mine in another boat handed
(See Tradition, Page 16)
me a fish in his net to weigh,” Bartlett recalled, laughing. “And we thought it’d be funny to ‘forget’ to give him his net back… Minutes later we watched him battle and boat a 4-plus-pound Smallmouth by hand, very confused as to where his net went until we lifted it up to show him.
“Then there was the bass that was netted on the other side of the boat with the line under the boat… The first cast of the LCI, at about 5 a.m. on Saturday, when a Top 10 Smallmouth was caught on a topwater… The unexpected Top 10 Walleye, caught by Gordo, while fishing for Smallmouth… But one of the best was the first year that there was a Carp prize of $1,000 for the largest Carp. One of our guys, Dan, caught one over 16 pounds, weighed it at the cabin and released it unaware of the prize. He would have won!
“Oh, and the thunderstorms!” Bartlett exclaimed. “I remember one year both my friend and I thought we were seeing things when our fishing lines were floating in the air. It wasn’t until I lifted my rod and you could hear the static on the rod tip that we realized what was going on. We never moved so fast to pull the trolling motor up, start the outboard and race to the shore. We’ve never let a thunderstorm get that close to us again.”
The stories go on: flat tires, broken down boat equipment, trailer bearings gone bad, accidentally wrapping a trailer around your truck, swamping boats, burnt fingers on pop-tarts and learning the hard way that vacuuming a boat can quickly ruin a brand new Electrolux vacuum.
“You name it and it’s happened to at least one of us,” Bartlett said. “We used to get up at 4 a.m. and one of the fellows would make pancakes,” said Wetmore, who met Bartlett at their Bass fishing club in Massachusetts. “Then we wouldn’t get off the water until sunset. When you’re 40 you can do that. I’ll be 70 next month. Now we come back at lunch and have every intention of getting back out
there, but sometimes we just settle into our chairs.”
“I hate getting up so early that first day,” echoed Perrotti, who met Bartlett through business; he ran a countertop business and Bartlett is a kitchen dealer. “Dave makes us get up at 4 or 4:30 a.m. and I always say, ‘You’re crazy.’ I’m 73 years old; I’m an old fart, that’s why I don’t like getting up early.”
“Yeah, we’re getting old and grey now,” added Andreotti, who met Bartlett as a young man fishing at the same bass club in Massachusetts. Andreotti moved up to Brunswick, Maine, where he served on the police department and now runs a hunting and fishing guide business. “The nice thing about the LCI Derby is that we get to catch up with each other at least once a year. It used to be catching up with girlfriends or starting a new job, and now it’s talking about our grown kids and grandkids.”
The fact that these guys leave their families to come spend the

— Gordon Wetmore
weekend (or longer) together on Father’s Day is just something that Andreotti said their families have all “digested.”
“Coming to fish the LCI Derby together is the best Father’s Day gift,” he said. “That it’s just us is kind of special.”
Over the decades of companionship, the group of anglers has lost some friends too. So every year now, they remember their passed buddies with two plaques — one in honor of Fred Schneider who died in 1997 (age 52) and the other in honor of Warren Croft who died in 2007 (age 50). The Fred Schneider award goes to the group participant with the highest point fish, and the Warren Croft award goes to the highest cumulative weight of the participant’s largest Largemouth Bass and largest Smallmouth Bass.
“As the years pass, older plates on the plaques are moved to the rear of the plaques to keep the history of winners,” Bartlett said.
“Those plaques are a real point of pride,” added Andreotti. “The winner gets to keep the plaque for the year… Dave’s had his name on there probably more than anyone else. He’s the guy to beat up there.”
When they were younger, Andreotti and Bartlett dabbled in some high-pressure bass tournaments. Although they never fished tournaments for a living, the duo still holds a healthy competition.
“Oh yeah, we still want to beat each other,” said Andreotti, who joined Bartlett fishing the LCI Derby in 1988. “The trouble is, he beats me most of the time. I think he speaks fish or something.”
Andreotti, Wetmore, Perrotti and Bartlett along with the others in this year’s group have another crack at getting their name on those perpetual plaques — or winning a derby prize — again this year. Sure, catching a prize-winning fish is great, but there’s more…
“I look at being out on the water as more of a spiritual experience,”
“I always, always, always roll the windows down when I’m going across from Colchester to the Islands. I could have my eyes closed and know I’m here; Lake Champlain has a unique effervescence… I fish a lot, and there’s no place like it.” — Mike Andreotti
Wetmore said. “Catching fish is a bonus.”
“I always, always, always roll the windows down when I’m going across from Colchester to the Islands,” Andreotti said. “I could have my eyes closed and know I’m here; Lake Champlain has a unique effervescence… I fish a lot, and
there’s no place like it.”
“Yeah, we eat, we drink, we play cards and we fish,” Perrotti simplified. “What else is there?”
Bartlett plans to keep up the annual tradition of fishing the LCI Father’s Day Derby with friends until he can’t cast a line anymore.
“It’s much more than the fishing,” Bartlett said. “It’s the constant ribbing amongst friends, enjoying a sunset over the Alburgh Passage, playing cards and most importantly the camaraderie. After all these years you can imagine the stories… Of course there’s always the story about the one that got away!”
Lake Champlain has a dinosaur. Actually, not just one dino. Likely tens of thousands. And no, I don’t mean Champ and her babies. I’m talking about bowfin and gar. Real, living fossils. Unchanged since the Pleistocene Epoch, 10 million years ago. The original native Lake Champlain fish species.
If you’re like most anglers, you probably have a favorite fish you like to target. Maybe it’s
hauling largemouth bass out of heavy vegetation, or burning spinnerbaits for roaming packs of smallmouth. It could be you like trolling spoons and streamers for landlocked Atlantic salmon, lake trout, brown trout and steelhead. Or perhaps it’s walleye or northern pike that hold your attention.
These keystone Lake Champlain sport-fish have played a crucial role in growing the LCI Father’s Day Derby, the premier competitive fishing event in the region, into what it’s become
today. And these same fish species have been responsible for putting the lake, our crown jewel, on the map as one of the best fishing destinations in the country.
But beneath Champlain’s waters, probably in the same areas you spend time casting a line, lurks an entirely different group of fish. A motley crew, far removed in looks and reputation from the traditional sport-fish we all know.
Bowfin, long-nose gar, freshwater drum, channel catfish, redhorse sucker, burbot and more. Historically, many of these
fish have been overlooked, misunderstood, and even persecuted. But they are native, insanely cool, and every bit as catchable by rod and reel as other more popular sport-fish.
The present-day bowfin is classified as a primitive fish — a living fossil — directly descended and mostly unchanged from relatives that lived alongside dinosaurs. Bowfin are facultative air-breathers, meaning that when necessary, they can gulp air and live out of the water for
(See Monsters, Page 19)
(Monsters continued from Page 18)
long periods, as their modified gas bladder doubles as a lung, and their ancient gill structure prevents them from collapsing when exposed to air. Bowfin are top-level predators, ambushing prey (and your lures) with vicious and aggressive strikes. The battles are epic.
Longnose gar — another relic from prehistoric times — is the bowfin’s closest living relative, and can also survive by gulping air. Longnose gar are covered by a double layer of overlapping ganoid scales that create a virtual suit of armor, leaving them with few natural predators. And their long, solid-bone snout is lined with rows of needle-point teeth, giving them a fearsome and impressive look.
Unfortunately, both bowfin and gar are often incorrectly viewed by anglers as harmful, or invasive, and are unfairly blamed and needlessly killed for eating other more “desirable” sport-fish species. But this isn’t true. These species are native, they have an intrinsic value to the lake’s fish community, and play an essential role in keeping species like panfish and minnows in balance.
Another fascinating native fish
that provides incredible angling opportunities is the freshwater drum. More affectionately known as sheepshead, this unique native species is the only member of its family in North America to occur completely in freshwater. They get huge and fight hard. The Vermont State Record is 25.5 pounds, while 12 to 18 pound fish are very common, and even drum under 10 pounds will test your tackle and your mettle. Drum have specialized molar-like teeth they use for grinding and crushing snails and clams, and in Champlain, they are learning to eat zebra mussels.
While Lake Champlain’s flagship species will always be fish like trout, salmon and bass, it’s clear that some of the lesser-known species are gaining in popularity.
When the LCI Derby started in 1982, there were only seven eligible species: landlocked Atlantic Salmon,
Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Steelhead, Large and Smallmouth Bass, and Walleye. Ten years later, the Extraordinary Category was added to include Bowfin, Burbot, Carp, Channel Catfish, Freshwater Drum, Longnose Gar and Whitefish, but it was reduced to just Bowfin, Carp, Catfish and
Drum in 1994.
In these early days, the Extraordinary Category accounted
for just 13% of fish entered. However, by 2011 it accounted for 24% of all fish registered, and last year 27% of fish registered for the LCI Derby were species in the Extraordinary Category.
Lake Champlain has an incredible diversity of fish species, many of which can be successfully targeted by hook and line. And while not all of them will earn you LCI points, they can provide exciting and unique fishing opportunities right here on our doorstep.
Bowfin can be found in shallow, heavily vegetated areas and can be targeted by tossing out a piece of cut bait under a bobber. They really like perch heads! Catching longnose gar is more about stalking and sight-fishing than anything. Look for gar sunning themselves on the surface in shallow, marshy bays, and cast your bait or lure ahead of the fish and keep it moving. Often, gar will wait until your lure is past them before charging and
(See Big Fish, Page 19)
attacking it. Setting the hook is often difficult because the hooks don’t penetrate the fishes’ bony mouths easily — so make sure your points are sharp. Freshwater drum feed mostly on small snails, clams, worms, and crayfish on the bottom. Fishing a small jig tipped with a nightcrawler around rocks can be a very effective technique.
Next time you’re looking for something a little different — a new challenge, something extra-ordinary, give one of Champlain’s many overlooked species a shot. Gar, bowfin, drum, catfish, redhorse, these species are arguably some of the toughest, meanest, and hardest fighting native fish we have.
is 14.5 pounds, but fish 8 to 12 pounds and up to 30 inches are common. The lake’s largest freshwater drum on record weighed 25.5 pounds, and anglers frequently catch 16-20 pounders. Channel catfish 18 to 25 pounds are widespread and the lake record is just over 32 pounds. Even redhorse sucker, which jump like tarpon when hooked, can exceed 10 pounds.
Bowfin can be found in shallow, heavily vegetated areas ... They really like perch heads! — Shawn Good
And then there’s the longnose gar. While the lake record is an impressive 18.75 pounds and fish 12-16 pounds are common, it’s the length that amazes. There’s no other sport-fish in the lake you can catch that can regularly exceed 50-inches.
They are abundant and widespread in the lake, and as a bonus, they can grow to huge sizes.
The Champlain record bowfin
Fishing is a life-long learning opportunity. Get out of your routine once in a while, and try fishing for some of Champlain’s more extraordinary species. You may never look at a 5-pound largemouth bass the same way again.

Any angler found misrepresenting a fish’s weight or attempting to alter a fish’s weight will be subject to legal proceedings.
29. In the interest of conservation of fish species, anglers are encouraged to release all fish caught in the Father’s Day Derby. The intent is to release all fish entered alive, and anglers are encouraged to properly handle live fish. For the purposes of the Father’s Day Derby, a fish shall be determined to be alive if, at the sole discretion and judgment of the Weigh Station Captain, the fish shows any reasonable signs of life. Any fish entered, which is considered to be alive under this criterion, shall be validated for a 5% LCI Derby Prize Point bonus. The Weigh Station Captain’s determination shall be made at the time of weigh-in, and shall be considered final.

32. No fish under the above-stated lengths will be accepted for entry in the Father’s Day Derby.
PRIZEWINNER DETERMINATION
33. It is the responsibility of the prize-winner to collect his/her prize(s). Prizes, or parts thereof, not claimed by July 23, 2021 will become the property of the LCI Board of Directors.
34. All tax liability is the burden of the recipient of the prize. Additionally, in accordance with state and federal authorities, LCI may be required to collect taxes before prizes can be presented.
35. The LCI Derby Prize Point value of each fish entered in the Father’s Day Derby shall be determined by multiplying the weight of the fish by the Species Points for that species. In addition, all Father’s Day Derby-eligible fish from the eight major species categories which are entered alive and relinquished to Weigh Station Captains shall receive a 5% LCI Derby Prize Point bonus (see Rule #29). Live fish shall be given priority at weigh-in.
36. Prize Point values for each of the eligible species are as follows:
to the Father’s Day Derby registrant who is fourteen (14) years of age or under on June 19, 2021 and who enters one fish from any of the eligible species in the Father’s Day Derby (see Rule #30), between the opening and closing hours of the Father’s Day Derby, that amasses the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points. Subsequent Junior Grand Prize places shall be likewise determined, in order, according to total LCI Derby Prize Points. Only a junior angler’s highest scoring fish per Junior Division will be considered eligible for an award. Awards will be made for Cold, Cool and Warm Divisions.
A. In addition to the eligible derby species, junior anglers may also enter yellow perch that are a minimum of 12 inches in length. There will be a special award category for junior yellow perch.
39. Early Bird Special
A. Anyone who registers for the Father’s Day Derby on or before March 31, 2021, will be entered to win a Smugglers Notch Resort vacation package valued at up to $1800 dollars.
B. To qualify, anglers must submit a COMPLETE registration for the Father’s Day Derby either by phone or online.
C. Winner will be announced at the conclusion of the Father’s Day Derby.
40. Ladies of the Lake prize package is awarded to the female angler, who is both registered in the Father’s Day Derby, and catches the fish that scores the most points in the Cold, Cool, or Warm Water Division
41. LCI Mystery Weight Birthday Cash
A. Eligible species for this promotion are Atlantic Salmon, Bowfin, Carp, Channel Catfish, Lake Trout, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Sheepshead, Smallmouth Bass, and Walleye.
B. The entry weight, for the purposes of this promotion, shall mean the number representing the tenths and hundredths place of the weight of the fish - e.g. for a fish that weighs in at 5.39 pounds, the entry weight would be 39.
C. The entry weight range shall mean the two numbers to the immediate right of the decimal point between .00 through .99, both inclusive, representing the tenths and hundredths place of the weight of the eligible species caught.
D. The preselected winning weight shall mean the single two-digit number in the entry weight range randomly selected for each eligible species prior to the start of the Father’s Day Derby.
25
An example determining points for a live Smallmouth Bass that qualifies for the 5% LCI Derby Prize Point bonus follows: A 4.40-pound Smallmouth Bass is worth 4.40 (weight) x 100 (points-per-pound) = 440 LCI Derby Prize Points. If the fish is determined to be alive at the time of weigh-in, add an additional 5%, or 22, bonus points. Thus, the entry earns the angler 440 + 22 = 462 LCI Derby Prize Points.
37. 1st Place Species Prizes shall be awarded, for each of the eight (8) eligible species categories (see Rule #30), to any Father’s Day Derby registrant who enters one fish from that category which amasses the highest number of LCI Derby Prize Points for a single fish. Subsequent Species Prize places shall be likewise determined, in order, according to total LCI Derby Prize Points.
38. The Junior Division Prizes shall be awarded
E. An independent underwriter will send randomly preselected winning weights to LCI sealed in master security envelopes prior to the start of the Father’s Day Derby.
F. The 40th place fish, as determined by LCI’s Derby Prize Point System, for each of the eligible species will have a chance to match the preselected winning weight. In the event that an eligible species does not have a total of forty fish weighed in, the eligibilty will revert to the last place.
G. Once results for the Father’s Day Derby have been finalized, LCI will place a live phone call to the underwriter’s security representative to verify the entry weights for each eligible species.
H. If the entry weight of the eligible species is identical to the preselected winning weight, the angler will be awarded $10,000.
I. In order to be eligible, the fish must be

c. In the event that the winning registration number drawn belongs to a family registration, the first named individual on the registration will be considered the winner and be delegated to receive the prize.

Only the angler’s single highest scoring fish per division per day for each of the three days of competition will be included in their final point total.
D. Each fish entered MUST be weighed on the same day it was caught to qualify for Angler of the Year. For example, a fish caught at 11:45pm Saturday, but weighed in at 12:45am Sunday, will still count towards species and T.E.A.M. prizes, but not toward Angler of the Year.
E. This is a non-exclusive prize, which means it can be won in addition to whatever other prize(s) the angler might also earn.
F. Tiebreakers will be determined by the single highest-scoring fish entered. If still a tie, the prize shall be split.
G. Failure by any claimant(s) to comply with the terms and conditions of the Father’s Day Derby Official Rules and Regulations will render the claim void and no prize will be paid.
H. As a condition for claim consideration an investigation will be conducted if, in LCI’s sole opinion, such action is warranted. Such an investigation will include, but will not be limited to, requiring the winner and/or witness to submit to and pass in a conclusive manner polygraph examinations.
