Fishing  home waters ,W ZDV WKH ODVW GD\ RI $SULO $W D P WKH ZDWHU WHPSHUDWXUH LQ WKH 1HZ +DYHQ 5LYHU ZDV GHJUHHV F.  Still  below  the  ideal  metabolism  DOO RI 9HUPRQWÂśV WURXW VSHFLHV H[FHSW lake  trout,  but  I’ve  caught  trout  in  much  colder  water.  More  disturb-­ ing  was  how  low  and  clear  the  river  ZDV /RRNLQJ DW WKH H[SRVHG URFNV riffs  and  gravel  bars  I  might  have  thought  it  was  already  mid  June  if  the  trees  above  me  were  not  still  scratching  the  VN\ ZLWK OHDĂ€HVV sticks.  Still,  after  a  few  months  with  a  lot  of  work-­related  travel  â€”  most-­ O\ WR SODFHV QRW NQRZQ IRU WURXW ÂżVK-­ LQJ ² LW ZDV JRRG WR EH EDFN ÂżVK-­ LQJ LQ 9HUPRQW %DFN RQ P\ KRPH rivers.  Because  of  that  travel,  it  was  P\ ÂżUVW WLPH RXW ÂżVKLQJ LQ WKH *UHHQ Mountain  State  since  the  start  of  the  RSHQ WURXW VHDVRQ 2QH RI WKH ODWHVW , have  ever  gone  before  wetting  a  line  LQ 9HUPRQW $W WKH VKRUHOLQH , SDXVHG DQG scanned  the  air  above  the  water.  There  wasn’t  much  insect  activity  near  the  surface.  I  saw  one  or  two  tiny  midges  buzzing  just  above  the  river,  but  nothing  resembling  a  KDWFK 2QH ODUJHU EODFN DTXDWLF LQ-­ VHFW PRYHG SDVW PH LQWR WKH WUHHV but  I  didn’t  get  a  close  look  at  it.  ,W PLJKW KDYH EHHQ D VWRQHĂ€\ EXW , thought  it  was  too  late  in  the  season  IRU EODFN VWRQHĂ€LHV 7KH\ DUH PRUH likely  to  crawl  out  of  the  river  onto  the  snow  in  early  March.  But  it  was  WRR HDUO\ IRU PD\Ă€LHV WKDW ELJ ,Q DQ\ case,  there  was  only  one  of  them,  which  is  not  enough  activity  to  im-­ SDFW ZKDW , ZRXOG ÂżVK ZLWK I  thought  about  going  with  a  cou-­ SOH WLQ\ Q\PSKV DQG ÂżVKLQJ WKH ERW-­ tom.  That  was  where  sluggish  trout  were  likely  to  be,  not  moving  too  far  LQ WKDW FROG ZDWHU IRU IRRG $QG LQ the  clear  shallow  water  and  bright  (See  Dickerson,  Page  4B)
