Business & Professional Community

about this

issue

In this corner of the world most people look forward to meeting folks they know — sometime it’s an impromptu chat on Main Street or at a school function; sometimes it’s a lively exchange of opinions at a town meeting; sometimes its just a friendly wave or a nod at the post office or the store. It’s a common interaction that makes Addison County a special place to live and work. We greet each other in many different settings: as customer and retailer, client and professional, neighbor and friend. And we come to know each other. While we may or may not know the other’s name, we recognize the face and engage in a subtle act of community-building that is one of the joys of small town living. For a quarter century now we have published a Meet Your Business and Professional Community special section every spring to help our readers get to know a little bit more about the people who play such a vital role in our communities. In this 26th edition of the section, we visit more than 100 businesses, solicit their stories and put names with photos. Some businesses retell their history, others highlight their current products and services. Some feature employees who have hit special milestones and still others have cutting-edge offerings they want you to know about. In each case, the focus serves as a tribute to the hard-working employees and employers who make each business the success that it is. We hope you enjoy these pages and that you take the time to reacquaint yourself with the businesses — and the names of the employees — throughout Meet Your Business and Professional Community. Our closeknit communities have much to offer, not only in products and services, but also in the smiles of those who greet us each day and the thanks we offer in return. The editors

We Save Old Wood Boats

Wood inboard and outboard boats emerged in growing numbers soon after World War I, were rapidly being replaced by fiberglass by 1960, and had lifespans of 5-10 years before major work would be required. Snake Mountain Boatworks reverses the ravages of time and neglect. We know our way around, in, under and through old wood boats. We are known for our commitment to the highest standards of craftsmanship, for our joinery, structural and mechanical repairs, watertight hulls, and varnish that is to die for. We communicate with and involve you in the process. Your boat is returned to you when promised and without excuses.

From left to right: Brian Sheppard, Roger “RJ” Towle, Michael Claudon, John LaFountain.

New for 2012: Store your boat at our ADT-protected facility. While she is with us for the winter, we can address her issues small and large so she is ready to go in the spring.

Saving Little Chief

This 18’, 1948 Chris Craft Utility Deluxe appeared to be in fair condition when she arrived, but a closer inspection revealed major rot in most of her planking and framework. A complete mechanical, structural and cosmetic restoration ensued.

Save her we have! See her launched and roaring back to life on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com /snakemtboatworks.

n 1930 Harry and Mildred Goodro purchased a sawmill in East Middlebury, Vt. The mill produced custom sawed Lumber primarily used for furniture; Harry began sawing 2”x2” hardwood square used for making butter tubs. In 1950 the retail building material business was started. Harry retired in 1969 leaving the business to his son Rodney and sons-in-law Richard Perry and Wyman Thomas. In 1983 another generation of Goodro offspring, brother and sister Mark and Cindy Thomas and long time employee Dennis Charron purchased the family business. Richard Miller came on as a partner in 1985 and was so until 2009. He continues now on a part-time basis. With the semi-retiring of Rick and the untimely passing of Dennis in 2009 another chapter has been started. Long time employees Ron Warner and Tim Comes are partnering with Mark and Cindy to manage the business, ensuring that Goodro Lumber Company will continue to successfully offer great customer service, quality materials and lasting value.

Goodro Lumber currently has eighteen full-time employees. Mark Thomas started in 1970 as a part-time employee, upon graduating from UVM he became fulltime in 1974, 42 years later he is president of the company. Cindy Thomas, with 30 years in the family business, looks after the financial end. Ron Warner has 28 years experience in the lumber business, 25 years of those at Goodro Lumber. He is now co-managing and is our lumber buyer. Tim Comes has 28 years in the business 21 of them with Goodro. He is now the General Manager. Rick Miller has over 45 years experience with 28 of them at Goodro. He now works part time and spends most of his time doing estimates and working oneon-one with long time customers. John Perkins, another 28 year veteran, 13 with us, works on our 20/20 kitchen layout program and inside sales. Anne Bertrand, our office assistant, has been helping Cindy for 14 years now. Bernie Laliberte has 13 years at Goodro. He is our inside stock receiver and merchandiser. Matt Stevers has been working the counter now for

four years and comes to us with over 8 years of experience building homes and general carpentry. Rounding out the inside staff is our newest face behind the counter Thatcher Littlefield. Thatcher has over 7 years of building and painting experience with local contractors. Experience doesn’t end on the inside. Our outside staff and drivers are also well rounded. Boyd Belden’s 38 years of experience help him to excel in road sales. He has been on the road for Goodro for almost 2 years. Troy LaPell started with us in 1994 as a truck driver, he has worked his way up to driving our boom truck. Mike Morcombe has now spent almost 2 years driving for Goodro. Dave Shaw & Morgan Dragon are Goodro’s newest employees. They started driving for us this spring. Gordy McDonough, our yard man, has 16 years in the trade, 10 years with Goodro. Tim Porter another truck driver, has 15 years of experience, 8 of those years at Goodro. Last but certainly not least is our 7 year veteran truck driver Bryon Bishop.

Dear Customers & Friends, It is hard to believe that another year has passed! We are so grateful to all of our loyal customers for your continued patronage. We have recently begun an extensive campaign to get feedback from all of our customers to continue to improve our business. We would love to hear from you, if we have not already, through a survey on the contact page of our website (www.nooniesdeli.com), through in restaurant comment cards, or in person at the deli. The feedback thus far has been so insightful that we have already made many positive changes and will continue to implement improvements over the course of the year. We are very excited to have added some really great staff to the already wonderful team that we are fortunate enough to have here at the deli! Please stop by and say “hello” the next time you are here in the Marble Works. Thanks again for a great year, we look forward to serving you soon… Jenny & Bryan

L-R: Nancy Foster, Peggy Connor, Bonnie Gridley, Jill Fraga, Diane Berthiaume and Phil Gridley.

The professionals at RE/MAX Champlain Valley Properties are pleased to welcome two new colleagues to their office. Jill Fraga is a Middlebury native who now lives in Lincoln. Jill, while new to this office, has several years of experience representing both Buyers and Sellers throughout Addison County. Peggy Connor, our new office manager, brings with her valuable municipal experience. She was Deputy Clerk for Addison Superior Court for 15 years, then Assistant Town Clerk of Middlebury, and has clerked for the Select Board for more than a decade. Broker and co-founder Nancy Foster is one of the area’s most experienced real estate brokers with over 30 years in the business. Nancy commits her energies and skills to help sellers market their homes, and her knowledge of the region to help each buyer find the perfect home. Bonnie Gridley has more than 26 years of experience in real estate. Having earned many advanced educational designations such as Certified Buyers Agent, Luxury Home Marketing Specialist, Certified Residential Specialist and a member of the Graduate Realtor Institute, Bonnie is dedicated to providing clients with the best service available – anywhere! In addition to being a professional realtor, Diana Berthiaume is also a dedicated nurse who practices part-time in Brandon. Previously a member of the Salisbury Planning Commission, she is also that town’s former assistant treasurer, and is now a member of the Salisbury BCA. Technically, Phil Gridley is retired; yet he is so indispensable to the team that he rarely takes a day off. From tech support to maintenance, Phil keeps the office running smoothly so his colleagues can stay on the run for their clients. Once in a while he sneaks away to the golf course or tennis courts.
