2Q ¿VKLQJ ZDONLQJ reading  and  writing Every  once  in  a  while,  several  stray  strands  of  thought  wind  together  in  my  mind  —  like  fur,  feathers,  thread  and  D VKDUS PHWDO KRRN WKDW WXUQ LQWR D À\ A  couple  weeks  ago  I  took  part  in  D V\PSRVLXP DW 0LGGOHEXU\ &ROOHJH 7KH WKHPH ZDV PLQGIXOQHVV 7DONV DQG discussions  explored  the  importance  of  being  fully  present,  and  being  at- WHQWLYH :DONLQJ LV RQH ZD\ WR SUDFWLFH attentiveness  —  especially  the  type  of  walking  that  is  not  merely  for  the  pur- pose  of  arriving  at  a  destination,  but  rather  walking  in  order  to  walk:  walking  to  be  present  where  you  are,  rather  than  ZKHUH \RX DUH WU\LQJ WR JR Since  the  symposium  I’ve  done  more  walking  than  usual  —  partly  be- cause  it’s  autumn  in  Vermont  and  fo- liage  is  peaking  and  I  had  a  week  of  guests  who  wanted  to  enjoy  our  local  colors,  but  also  because  of  the  sympo- VLXP $QG ,œYH EHHQ PRUH DZDUH ZKLOH walking  of  being  present  and  atten- WLYH ,Q IDFW ,œYH EHHQ QRWLFLQJ DXWXPQ leaves  on  the  ground,  and  the  variety  of  shapes,  and  hues  and  sizes,  and  pat- terns  of  veins  and  freckles,  that  can  be  IRXQG HYHQ XQGHU RQH WUHH ,œYH EHHQ picking  up  my  favorite  leaves  and  spreading  them  around  my  desk  and  GLQLQJ WDEOH 2QFH D FROOHDJXH ZDONHG by  and  saw  me  examining  a  bright  or- DQJH OHDI $W ¿UVW , ZDV VHOI FRQVFLRXV and  maybe  even  a  little  embarrassed,  IHHOLQJ D OLWWOH OLNH D ¿YH \HDU ROG FKLOG %XW WKHQ , WKRXJKW PRUH RI XV RXJKW WR KDYH VRPHWKLQJ RI WKDW ¿YH \HDU ROG GHOLJKW LQ XV I’ve  written  several  books  about  au- WKRUV & 6 /HZLV DQG - 5 5 7RONLHQ 2QH RI /HZLVœV IDYRULWH DGXOW SDVWLPHV was  taking  walking  tours  around  the  Irish  and  English  countrysides  —  often  WZR QLJKW WRXUV VWD\LQJ DW ORFDO LQQV /HZLVœV JRRG IULHQG - 5 5 7RONLHQ did  not  share  that  passion,  at  least  in  KLV PLGGOH DJH \HDUV %XW DV D \RXQJHU PDQ - 5 5 DQG KLV \RXQJHU EURWKHU Hilary  took  a  walking  tour  of  Switzer- ODQG 6R LW LVQœW VXUSULVLQJ WKDW ZDONLQJ takes  a  prominent  role  in  the  books  of  ERWK RI WKHVH DXWKRUV /HZLVœV ³7KH /LRQ 7KH :LWFK DQG WKH :DUGUREH´ DV ZHOO DV ³3ULQFH &DVSLDQ´ DQG ³7KH 6LO- YHU &KDLU´ DUH PRVWO\ MXVW ORQJ DWWHQ- (See  Dickerson,  Page  2B)
