Vermont Homeowners Recommend “I had been wanting to do a solar installation and had started to gather some equipment. Once I realized that micro inverters are the way to go, I found out that the panels I had would not work with them. I had to start looking around again. Then I realized that Bristol Electronics, the company I’ve known all these years and trust with my electronic needs, was also in the solar business. They came down and checked out the new garage that I had built specifically to place solar panels on and gave me a price that was comparable to installing it myself. In no time at all, I was producing electricity and have not paid a power bill for the last six months.” Chris Goodrich – Bridport, VT “The Bristol Electronics people are very pleasant to work with. We looked at rental vs. ownership and it became clear that ownership was a better deal in the long run. The installation time was very quick. We expect to pay off our loan in 10 years and then we’ll have free electricity for the rest of our lives. Bristol Electronics is very professional. The process was easy and we are very happy.” Gerry & Claire Tetrault – Bristol, VT FREE ON-SITE EVALUATIONS

“We looked into installing a solar system ten to twelve years ago. I wish we had done it back then. The payback has been amazing. Bristol Electronics is such a friendly company. The guys are great, everyone is easy to work with and so professional. When I build a new home in the future, I will definitely plan on incorporating solar and using Bristol Electronics.” Karen – New Haven, VT “Recently, we had a small solar array installed on our garage by Bristol Electronics. They were very helpful through all the phases of the installation process. It took us quite some time to decide that solar energy was the way to go. They were very patient with us as we asked lots of questions! Bristol Electronics always responded promptly and with all the information we needed. Once we made the decision to go solar, they made the process really easy and helped us choose an array that fit both our electric and financial needs with the option to expand in the future. The physical installation didn’t even take an entire day and we immediately had online access to actually see our solar production! I couldn’t ask for an easier process. And we know that our local installer is available any time we have further questions! Thank you, Bristol Electronics! Michelle Lass – Bristol, VT

Sunrise Orchards is a 200 acre, family owned and operated, wholesale apple farm located in Cornwall, VT and devoted to growing excellent apples for our local community as well as the entire Northeast region. We usually grow about 130,000 bushels of apples each year, although last year we had a record crop and harvested over 150,000 bushels! We grow many varieties such as McIntosh, Empire, Cortland, Honeycrisp, Macoun, Red Delicious, Jonagold, Granny Smith, Gala and Paula Red. When harvest begins at Sunrise Orchards in mid-August, we pack and distribute our apples through our local delivery route all over Vermont and outside the state to markets in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. We store about half of our crop in refrigerated and controlled atmosphere storage (at Vermont Refrigerated Storage, Shoreham, VT) and pack it throughout the winter and spring, continuing to distribute to all of our customers. Just about when we finish selling all the apples, we start a new season all over again. Our apples and cider are available locally at the Middlebury Farmer’s Market from September 1-October 31, Middlebury Shaw’s and Middlebury Natural Foods Coop. Please visit our website, sunriseorchards.com, like us on Facebook or follow us on Instagram at Sunrise_Orchards and hear about happenings on the farm!

18 Employees. 362 years experience...WOW!
n 1930 Harry and Mildred Goodro purchased a sawmill in East Middlebury, Vt. The mill produced custom sawed Lumber primarily used for furniture; Harry began sawing 2”x2” hardwood square used for making butter tubs. In 1950 the retail building material business was started. Harry retired in 1969 leaving the business to his son Rodney and sons-in-law Richard Perry and Wyman Thomas. In 1983 another generation of Goodro offspring, brother and sister Mark and Cindy Thomas and long time employee Dennis Charron purchased the family business. Richard Miller came on as a partner in 1985 and was so until 2009. He continues now on a part-time basis. With the semi-retiring of Rick and the loss of Dennis in 2009 another chapter has been started. Long time employees Ron Warner and Tim Comes are partnering with Mark and Cindy to manage the business, ensuring that Goodro Lumber Company will continue to successfully offer great customer service, quality materials and lasting value.

Today it offers a variety of support and education programs for families with young children and at-risk adolescents, including home visiting, parent education, work readiness training and early childhood and family services. Profiles: Stone Leaf Teahouse By PHOEBE LEWIS MIDDLEBURY — Nestled in the Marble Works complex in Middlebury, the Stone Leaf Teahouse is a surprisingly large shop with lightgold, wooden floors and walls lined with tins labeled “Darjeeling firstflush” and “Wen Shan Bao Zhong.” Along with sustainably produced teas, the shop also sells teacups, sweets and snacks, and even traditional Indian tikas. Guests sit at low benches lined with silken pillows and are surrounded by hanging tapestries and chimes, and instead of a typical front door the entrance features two hanging pieces of cloth that ripple in the wind. For owners John and Samantha Wetzel, the Stone Leaf Teahouse is more than a business — it’s a way to share their travels and to teach the art of making tea. And as they teach others in their tea workshops and training sessions, there’s more to tea than simply dumping leaves into hot water. That’s because as well as importing the teas they sell, they also travel to where the teas are grown and harvested, speaking personally with growers and forging personal bonds that prove immensely useful as the business grows. The Wetzels had long dreamed of operating an importing and wholesale tea business, so when in 2008 they visited a friend living and teaching in Taiwan they kept their eyes open for an opportunity — and they found one. “When we were there we were biking around and visiting different areas, and were fortunate to meet a gentleman who has become a supplier for the past six year, and for us he was an ideal person. When I came back that was the first major contact that we made,” John Wetzel said. Stone Leaf sources its tea from China, Taiwan, India and Nepal, and as such the Wetzels are unable to visit every tea farm they’re interested in.
JOHN WETZEL, AND EMPLOYEE JULIE PACHOLIK The friends and business partners they meet along their travels will often buy and ship teas in their place, so that at any given moment the Stone Leaf Teahouse will sell teas that were personally selected for their shop. “Every place is (about) learning tea culture, doing business in the way that they do business there,” Wetzel said. “So in one place we have someone that travels each season and buys tea for us, in other places it’s the garden that sends us samples. We try every way to get the best tea.” The teahouse currently employs two people aside from the Wetzels, and while the shop may seem quiet when a visitor dropped in late in June, it was readying for its busiest weeks of the summer — the Middlebury College Language Schools often mean a boom in business. But the teahouse is only one facet of the Stone Leaf enterprise: the Wetzels also provide wholesale
teas, workshops and tea consulting throughout Vermont. “The teashop and the wholesale — all of those have different rhythms,” Wetzel said. “The language schools are a fun time, to be here and to have five different languages being spoken and I’m the only one speaking English. Especially because I travel a lot, so I love hearing foreign languages.” Most of the Wetzels’ wholesale tea goes to surrounding businesses such as the Vergennes Laundry and the Middlebury Natural Food Co-Op. Stone Leaf helps these businesses choose teas to match their menu, and conducts tea-making workshops to train businesses in how to make a perfect cup. “It’s a very interactive wholesale,” Wetzel said with a laugh. “It’s more like tea consulting.” Selling wholesale is more cost efficient than selling packaged teas, he explained. It also gives buyers like Vergennes Laundry more opportunity to interact with Stone Leaf than if they simply ordered packaged tea off of the Internet. “A lot of it is teaching,” Wetzel said. “We find tea that’s very good, but everybody likes to make it different ways. So for us, it’s about helping people find the right tea and helping them make it the way they like it.” Stone Leaf also offers something else unique to the area — tea-hikes. It is something the Wetzels came across in their travels throughout Taiwan, where a group hike in the mountains culminates in a tea break. “They’re a lot of fun — you don’t need a lot to pack,” Wetzel said. “You hike to the top of Snake Mountain, or if you’re more ambitious, Mount Abe, or even just by the falls. It’s awesome — it’s like this very simple little thing and it just gets you to think about tea wherever you are.” Stone Leaf Teahouse is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and is located in Middlebury’s Marble Works.

“I’m the kind of dude who likes to get all dressed up and have somewhere to go. Admittedly a bit of an exhibitionist – you’ll see me in all my glory and tempting varieties in THE best pizza slice case in Vermont! If you’ve tried me, I know you’ll be back for more. I’m a good traveller and eager to follow you anywhere.
You might want to stop into Nino’s and try a salad, specialty pie, or some wings. I’m not offended; you’ll be glad you did, but you’ll always come back to me. I know that Nino’s slogan is Real Simple… Real Good. But I must take exception. I am real good, but I dare anyone to call me simple!”

What you may not know is how much TLC goes into making me the best that I can be, and in over 40 different styles. Mike & Jessie Nienow begin with a deep massage, then they hand-toss (whoa! It’s better than a carnival ride). Next, they swirl distinctive aromatic sauces on my back – freshly made marinara or pesto, even bbq! After the perfect tasteful accessories, I get sprinkled with cheeses. It tickles just a bit.

WELCOME TO Restaurant Manager Karen
Chef Starrin
has been at 51 Main since summer of 2009. She brings over 25 years of experience in restaurants & event planning, and is also a former restaurant owner.
has been at 51 Main since spring of 2008. A graduate of NECI, our favorite part about him is that he’s not only passionate about food, but also our guests. You may see him hand deliver a dish to a table or check in on diners during their meal. Next time you pass the kitchen window, take a moment to say hello and let him know your favorite specials!
“My favorite part is that it never feels like work,” she says. “When I look out into the dining room and see families playing games together, students relaxing, couples enjoying that stolen moment away from reality, a group of professors gathering to get to know one another, new faces that have just discovered us. I am reminded of our mission — I’d say we nailed it!”
ABOUT 51 MAIN 51 Main at the Bridge was born from an idea that a group of Middlebury College students had for improving social life at the College. They envisioned a sophisticated, diverse social space where people of all ages and all walks of life could come together for conversation, surrounded by good music and art and within a venue that was separate from the campus. The name was created to not only speak to our geography – at the end of the bridge – but also to speak of the place as a bridge between town and
college, a bridge for artists, both musical and visual, to present their talents to the public and a bridge for personal growth through shared experiences. 51 Main is open to all who want to experience the scenic setting, great food with an international flair and music and art that changes in style and presentation regularly. Live entertainment is available nearly every evening Thursday through Saturday.

At Lester Farm, we believe in being good stewards of the land and in preserving our agricultural spaces and scenic beauty. In May of 2013 Amy Oxford opened The Oxford Rug Hooking School in Cornwall. She is the author of five books on rug hooking since learning the trade at McAdoo Rugs in North Bennington, VT in the early 80s. McAdoo closed three years ago and Oxford purchased their entire catalog of over one thousand rug designs, which are now available for her students. Some may remember Amy from her former business, Red Clover Rugs, a rug hooking shop that started in Bristol in 1985 and later moved to the Vermont State Craft Center at Frog Hollow and Star Mill where she was resident artist. Oxford sold Red Clover in 1995 after inventing her own rug making tool, The Oxford Punch Needle, which she manufactures and sells all over the world. Serving Addison County for 59 years Ralph Foote established the law firm of Conley & Foote (Jack was his partner) back in 1955, and a decade later settled in its current location — a grand, historic house at 135 S. Pleasant Street — in the heart of Middlebury’s downtown. Throughout these past 59 years, the firm has endeavored to provide expert legal advice for its general practice, including civil litigation, estate planning, real estate transactions, small business counsel and other matters of law. Richard (Dick) Foote joined his father in the firm in 1987. Willem Jewett (also a state representative serving the towns of Hancock, Goshen, Ripton, Salisbury, Cornwall, Leiceseter and Bridport) joined the firm in 1995, and Joanie Donahue joined the practice in 1998. Judy Steele and Amy Boise, together, bring to the firm 67 years of experience as legal assistants and paralegals. As we have for the past six decades, we remain dedicated to serving our clients with expert legal representation and excellent value.

Profiles: Rory Jackson By WEYLAND JOYNER BRISTOL — Sitting outside his studio in downtown Bristol, greeting fellow business owners and shoppers, Rory Jackson seems to know everyone in town. “It can be distracting,” the artist says of his studio’s public location, “but it’s really important to me to have the energy, the interaction with life.” Jackson, 31, has been working out of this location, on Main Street across from Bristol Bakery, for two years now. “Bristol’s a special place, there are so many good people,” he says. Jackson, who lives in Lincoln, has deep roots in Vermont, both geographically and artistically. His uncle, Woody Jackson, and mother, Anne Cady, are both painters of rural Vermont scenes who have earned Ghanaian children in getting adsome acclaim. equate education, Jackson founded Rory Jackson says his greatest in- the Trinity Yard School on his propfluence was his grandmother Marge erty in 2008. a place of work, not sales. Jackson’s newest artwork features landscapes and seascapes from Ghana as well as Vermont. Inspired by the surf break in front of his house in Cape Three Points, he has produced a number of seascapes. He also enjoys painting aerials — landscapes presented from an aerial perspective, as though the viewer were in a helicopter, looking down at the terrain. In the back of his studio he pulls out one of the new aerials, of a characteristic Champlain Valley landscape. “I’ve learned some interesting things about perspective,” he explains. “See, in the front, closer to the viewer, the pigment is clear,” he says, indicating the dark green of the painting’s foreground, “but as I go back, I add sky color to create depth.” The effect is striking: Light blue mixed with the green pigment obscures the horizon as though there were an atmosphere in the painting, creating a wide-open sense of space. “Maybe one day I’ll include people in the landscape. For now,” Jackson says, nodding toward the studio’s windows, which open out on Main Street, “there’s enough people in the landscape.”

These stains had been cleaned a few times from other pros and never came clean. Don was able to get them the cleanest they have ever been. He researched chemical solutions specific to our problem and was successful. He takes pride in his work and is very professional. If you have a nasty carpet you need cleaned, Don is the pro to come in and get the job done.” – Yvette & George, Bridport “What a wonderful and professional cleaning job you did on our carpets! After over 12 years of mud seasons, 2 large dogs (one since a puppy), and many spilled sodas and coffee, I really did not think the carpets could look this good again!
