Tiger baseball eyes a step forward By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — In his second year leading the Middlebury Union baseball team, Coach Charlie Messenger is expecting a step forward from last year’s three-win campaign, one that ended with the Tigers nearly upsetting highly ranked Champlain sion I playoffs. By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union boys’ tennis team has a new coach, former Tiger tennis player Andy Killorin, but returns many of the players who have been developing their games on the team for the past year or two under the tutelage of former coach Franz Collas. With the addition of just a little bit of strategy to the fundamentals the Tigers have already learned, Killorin is optimistic this year’s team can take a step forward. “I have a lot of players who have all the shots. They have the serves, the volleys, the forehand, the backhand,” he said. “All I have to do is teach them the tactics, which they know the basics of.” The team is one of the largest in program history, 19 in all, but Killorin expects its veterans will be the ones to start most matches, rather than its one senior newcomer, Thomas Crowne, its one sophomore newDate 4/16 4/28 4/30

comer, Nick Mayone, or its seven freshmen. The top of the singles ladder should be occupied by juniors Elliott Abbott, Bo Tran, Bob Avery and Jonathan McCluskey, possibly in that order, although challenges pects either junior Eric Podraza or sophomore Marcelo Hanta-Davis to hold down the No. 5 singles position, with the other on one of the doubles teams. He also believes the Tiger singles players will more than hold their own. “They can hit a really good ball and hit a really good ball consistently, which are two separate things,” Killorin said. “I think all the singles players will do some real damage throughout the year.” He expects junior Jerald Staret and sophomores Jonathan Fitzcharles, Nicholas Holmes and Ben Silver as well as either Podraza or Hanta-
Davis to comprise the two doubles teams, although he will keep an open mind and watch for newcomers to emerge. How the teams are composed will be determined by “who works well with who, who can feed off each other,” Killorin said. Regardless of the doubles lineup, he said the Tigers will have advantages. “Our doubles players, we’re big and we’re fast, and that’s not common,” he said. “They’re tall and can crowd the net and be really intimidating for opponents, and they’re quick and can really get to a lot of stuff. We’re going to win a lot of matches that way.” Killorin believes the Tigers can quite possibly post enough regular season victories to earn a favorable playoff draw and then win a Division I playoff match. petitive,” he said.

Numbers boosting girls’ tennis By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — In 2013, low numbers and a young team meant a year off from the Division I playoffs for the Middlebury Union girls’ tennis program. This spring, more athletes signed up to boost Coach Laura Rumbough’s team, and she also believes a year of seasoning for her veterans will help the Tigers bounce back. “I’m optimistic. It’s a great group of girls, and a lot of them have had quite a few years,” Rumbough said. Junior co-captains Madeline Ganey and Marvie Avery return for their third year as starting singles players and will occupy the Nos. 1 and 2 spots on the ladder in some order, and Rumbough expects solid records from both. “Madeline and Marvie are now into their third year of playing every time every year, so they’re our lead-
ers,” she said. Three seniors, veterans Sonia Howlett and Sara Boe and newcomer Julia Cluss, and junior Dorothy slots on the singles roster; the odd person out will be a doubles candidate. Senior Lindsay Wells and junior Jesse Wulfman comprised the top doubles team in 2013, and Rumbough said either could also challenge for a singles spot. But she is hesitant to break up the combination. “If we have a strong No. 1 doubles team that would change the game a little bit in some of our matches,” she said. In the Tigers’ opening match, junior Emma Castle and freshman Charlotte Keathley teamed up successfully, and Rumbough said both
would remain in the running for doubles play along with the athlete who Senior Anna Caliandro and juniors Sophie Logan and Hannah Stoll round out the squad, but have less tennis experience than their teammates, Rumbough said. Overall, Rumbough said an individual result or two within each match could make a big difference in the Tigers’ record this spring. “Last year a lot of our matches were pretty tight, and they went to If that occurs and the Tigers post a few more wins, they can once again book a postseason date. “Our goal would be to try to make it to the state tournament, which we did not make it to last year,” Rumbough said. “We hope to have a good enough record to earn a place in the states.”

four years in a row, only to come up short. Coach Kelley Higgins didn’t discuss history when previewing this season, but clearly likes a team that only lost a couple key players from 2013. “The main core is returning, and I think that helps. They’re familiar with each other,” Higgins said. “You’ve got to love that. It makes my job easy when you have a lot of togetherness in the team.” Back are junior goalie Baily Ryan and three defenders who saw regular time a year ago: seniors Olivia Carpenter and Hannah Hobbs and sophomore Annina Hare. Higgins moved junior Lejla Mahmuljin, a former attacker, back to join them this spring,
is back at center, high-scoring Emily Robinson returns at attack wing, and junior Julia Rosenberg is back at defensive wing. Sophomore Emma Best split time at attack and attack wing a year ago and will focus on attack wing this spring, Higgins said, and sophomore Claire Armstrong will start at the other D-wing spot. Senior Sophia Abdul Sater might spend more time at attack, but can Eva Hirsch and sophomore Sophia Hodges will also see time spelling the middies. Sophomore Sara Kelley Junior Emily Kiernan is the leading scorer returning at attack, where also four-year veteran Kiera Kirkaldy is back. As well as Abdul Sater, Higgins
said junior Alexis Ouellette and sophomore Emma Donahue will also see regular time, while sophomore Signi Livingstone-Peters and freshman Mikayla Robinson are also available. Higgins said with not quite enough son, the varsity squad is larger than typical, which makes for “great fullplaying time in games. She said she would work hard to accommodate all the athletes. “I want to make sure they are staying with the game and developing,” Higgins said. And she said she is eager to see how the Tigers will fare this spring. “Everybody seems to be on the presses me,” Higgins said. “And just their focus and really wanting to do the right thing from the beginning and wanting to play together as a team really makes me more excited than usual.”
Softball gets more pitching, youth By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — With a deeper younger players and a year of experience gained for some of her key athletes, Middlebury Union softball coach Polly Rheaume was expecting a step forward from last year’s threewin season. “They’re looking really good right now,” Rheaume said. “I think we’re going to have a solid team this year and going to be a lot more competitive than we were last year.” She expects freshman pitcher Payton Buxton to team up with senior Justina Baker to give the Tigers a solid starting tandem, and if junior Haley Davis recovers from an injury the Tigers could go three deep on the mound. Rheaume said Buxton spent plenty of time with a pitching coach
this past winter. “With Payton coming up, she’s worked hard all offseason,” she said. At least to start, sophomore Hanna Lawrence will catch, as senior Rachel Howlett is nursing an injury. They could share time when Howlett recovers, Rheaume said. Sophomore Cassondra Laroche is the diamond, sophomore Makayla Foster will play second, senior Carsyn Buxton returns at shortstop, junior Krisandra Provencher is set at third, and junior Brooke Gaboriault In the preseason, Rheaume was leaning toward starting three junior ra in center, Abby Lane in left and Janelle Mandigo in right, with two more juniors in reserve, Maegan
Mitchell and Keri Richmond. Rheaume expects good things in “They’re going to be a strong, solid defense,” she said. The Tigers were focusing on improving their offense. “Hopefully we can get our bats going a little stronger this year,” Rheaume said. The Tigers will compete in the tough Metro Conference again, but have been moved down to Division II for the playoffs. Rheaume said D-II is also competitive, but hopes D-I Metro play will prepare the Tigers for the playoffs. “There are some strong D-II teams out there, and we’re still playing a D-I schedule,” Rheaume said. “We’ll get some competition there, and that

MOUNT ABRAHAM UNION HIGH SCHOOL
Eagle baseball seeks return to title chase By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — It’s been four years since the Mount Abraham Union baseball team has won a Division II title. In 2010, Coach Jeff Stetson’s in 10 years. But the past three years have been less fruitful for the Eagles, with tournament seeds ranging from 10th to 13th. The program remained competitive in the playoffs, winning giving high seeds battles in quarterfurther. “Even these last few years when we’ve gone out early in the tournament, we’ve been in competitive games against the teams that end up going deep in the tournament, Stetson said.
Just maybe this year’s team could go a little further, he said. To start with, senior Sawyer Kamman returns for a third season of anchoring a pitching staff that Stetson believes should be deeper than any in recent springs. “Sawyer’s looked very good, Stetson said in the preseason. “This will be the best pitching staff, I think, I’ve had in three or four years. Speaking before the Eagles headed to Florida on April 8, he said that trip would probably allow him to sort out the rest of his rotation from a number of candidates: senior returner Josh Cyr, senior newcomer Sean Wood, and junior newcomers Joey Payea and Ernie Brouillard. Junior Brandon Marshall is likely to pitch in relief, as well. How the Eagles will line up, at
least to start, was also to be determined by that trip, although Stetson said nothing will be set in stone with competition for many positions. “I’ve told the guys if you’re hitting you out there in the lineup. One of our big goals this year is to hit the ball hard more consistently, he said. Junior Ethan Gendreau and senior Aaron Benway were the top candidates to catch, with junior Ty Combs also available behind the plate. Benway, Combs and senior Aus-

By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — There may not be a more positive lacrosse coach in the Marble Valley League this year than Otter Valley’s Randy Stewart. While the fourth-year coach acknowledges that this year’s squad of 24 players is very young, during the preseason he was thrilled with the attitude he is seeing on his team. “It feels different this year, he said. “We have such a young squad, mostly freshman and sophomores, but they are very eager to learn. Everything is really positive, and it’s been a while since I’ve been this positive about a season. Stewart said hiring Assistant Coach Carl Gutzman was key to preparing for this season. “It’s the best decision I ever made, Stewart said. “He has the fever, too. We met a lot in the off-season to talk about our goals for the team and the coming season. We’re excited. won one game the second year and one game last year. Stewart said the thing that hurts the program most is the lack of any elementary or middle school feeder program to get kids
started playing earlier. He is teaching the game every season to high school age players, while many other schools have recreational lacrosse programs feeding junior varsity and varsity teams. Stewart said he has spoken with Brandon Recreation Director Bill Moore several months ago about starting a lacrosse program, but then the town budget was defeated on Town Meeting Day. “I knew it wouldn’t be possible, Stewart said. “There is no way this town has surplus money for something like that. If the parents and the locals say that’s what they want, then maybe the town can justify it because the desire is there. As far as the competition against schools with larger lacrosse programs, Stewart credited OV Athletic Director Steve Keith with crafting a more forgiving schedule for the Otters this season. In other words, OV won’t have to play Division I schools with an unfair advantage. “An emerging Division II program has no business going out against a Division I powerhouse, Stewart said. “Steve went out and got us a competitive schedule against comparable tal-
ent. When the guys get pounded, it’s not good for anybody. Nobody wants to go out against a team and win 19-1. Stewart also said he thinks more competitive matches will create more excitement and intensity, for both his player and for the fans. And, he said, this team’s attitude coupled with the new schedule should translate into more wins. “The attitude this year is awesome, the coach said. “It’s really exciting. I feel like I’ll have a couple of years with these kids to change the program. It’s an awesome sport. OVUHS Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Date Opponent/Event Time 4/18 Mt. Otter baseball seeking to repeat By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — The defending Division II baseball champion Otters are itching to get on the diamond and defend their title. Coach Tim Mitchell is taking a calm and collected approach to this season, which like all other spring sports was delayed by a slow snowson, on April 10 and 12, were postweek. “My expectations are to keep playing the game hard and the right way, he said. “One pitch at a time, one game at a time. Not looking ahead, just one game at a time. The 2013 championship OV squad had just 10 players, and that hasn’t changed, despite losing six seniors. There are six seniors stepping up this year: John Winslow, Shane Quenneville, Will Claessens, Dean Douglas, C.J. McCullough and Tyler Jones. Juniors John Winslow, Emmett Thurston and Connor Gallipo, and sophomore Tyler Allen round out the starters.
of varsity play, depending on their schedule. They should have ample opportunity to play at the varsity level, as six schools in the league are season due to lack of players There are 16 regular-season games this year, seven at home and nine away, and it’s a tougher schedule. The Otters will be challenged by more Division I teams on the road this year, thanks to their success in 2013. OV will travel to Rutland, Hartford, Mount Anthony and Brattleboro. Mitchell said the squad’s strength this year is deep pitching. He has six pitchers on the team (all righties) and he’ll need them. “We’ll have to use every single one of our pitchers this year because of a packed schedule, thanks to Mother Nature, he said, noting that some games will be played with little rest in between. Looking ahead, Coach Mitchell said he will concentrate on the fundamentals and take it one game at a
time, although he has high hopes for his team. In the preseason he was just anxious to get outside and play ball. “We’re still state champions for the year and we’re still contenders again this year, I believe, he said, “We expect to be competitive, and like every other team, we’re anxious to be outside and get the season under way. The team believes. Let’s get this season going!

Small VUHS golf squad plans to pick its individual spots By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union golf program lives on this spring, but once again in a largely non-competitive fashion. A year ago, Coach Kurt Plank had a squad at Metro Conference events,
but ultimately the Commodores stayed on the sidelines and worked on their games rather than vie against the state’s top golfers. At least to start this spring, the Commodores won’t have enough golfers to contemplate that option. As of early April, only senior Mat-
teo Palmer and junior Elan Hugo though Plank, as ever, was optimistic for more to sign up for a sport he loves. “For those who play the game, it’s a tremendous amount of fun,” Plank said. “I’m hoping to get a little more
turnout as things open up.” There are good reasons for students to consider the option, he said. “Golf is the kind of game you can play for the rest of your life,” Plank said. And there are reasons for the school to continue to support the
program, as well, he believes, because the athletes police themselves. “When you talk about ethics, the game of golf is the perfect game,” Plank said. As for this spring, a Vermont Principals’ Association rules change will

lowed for single golfers who want to join competitions, provided there are openings. The Commodores should be able to travel to a couple matches. “Individuals can go and compete,” Plank said. “That should work in our favor.”
