The wedding party: For smooth sailing, it’s good for all to understand their roles (MS) — As weddings have become less regimented and more expensive, the traditional bridal party is often pared down to a best man and a bridesmaid or two. Their roles, however, have remained constant through the years.

Whether the wedding you’ve got in mind is large or small, formal or casual, conventional or original, it’s helpful to have a sense of the roles that bridal party members have played through the years.

• Maid of Honor — Usually the closest friend of the bride and sometimes a relative. A married, divorced, widowed, or older woman might be called the matron of honor. She assists with the details of the wedding plans, like shopping for the bridal gown, addressing

invitations and choosing flowers. She arranges the bridal shower in conjunction with the bride’s family, is in charge of coordinating the bridesmaids and organizing fittings, and typically signs the couple’s certificate of marriage or wedding license as a legal witness. At the reception, she should stand immediately after the groom in the receiving line.

• Best Man — Commonly the groom’s best friend, relative or not, the best man is in charge of instructing the ushers and coordinating the groom’s transportation to the ceremony. He usually holds the rings until the ceremony and will also sign the marriage certificate as a legal witness. At the reception, he holds a place of honor, escorting the maid of honor

• Flower Girl and Ring Bearer — The flower girl carries a basket of flower petals to sprinkle down the aisle, or flowers to be passed out to the women seated near the aisle.

The ring bearer may either escort the flower girl down the aisle, or follow her, with the rings on a pillow.

• Bridesmaids and Ushers — Typically friends or relatives of the bride, bridesmaids may be asked to coordinate special details during the ceremony preparations or at the reception, and assist the bride and the maid of honor. Ushers (sometimes also known as groomsmen) should be prepared for an early arrival at the ceremony to escort female guests to their seats. During the ceremony, they will escort the bridesmaids down the aisle. They may also be asked to coordinate the guests’ trip from the ceremony to the reception as well as assist the groom and the best man.

• Father of the Bride — His most conspicuous duty is giving away the bride at the ceremony. He might also fulfill numerous roles, such as coordinating transportation, dancing and toasting. Traditionally, he and the mother of the bride have paid for the wedding and reception but today it is common for expenses to be shared by both families along with the bride and groom themselves.

The new rules of wedding etiquette in our modern age

By SIMONE HILL, theknot.com With the rise of social media and its influence on all aspects of our lives, wedding etiquette is changing to keep up with the times.

Here are some tips to get couples — and their friends and families — from the engagement through the reception.

WHEN PLANNING YOUR WEDDING • Call your parents before pressing “post” or “tweet” to announce your engagement.

Your close friends and family will want to hear it straight from you first. A Facebook status or tweet might be the most efficient way to get the news out, but it’s not the most personal. You know which friends and family members would appreciate hearing the news directly from you. Plus, it’s likely that older family members (like your grandparents) don’t have Facebook or Snapchat accounts and could miss the message altogether.

• Change your relationship status in minutes or months — it’s up to you.

There’s no wrong or right time — some couples even do it at the altar! Once you tie the knot, it’s up to you and your new spouse to decide when to change your relationship status or last name on your social media sites. For some couples, this can be a very important moment; for others, it’s no big deal. So if and when you’re ready to make the change, go for it.

• Post pictures of your engagement ring, but keep the nitty-gritty details like cost and carat to yourself.

After you post your “engaged” status, your friends and family will be dying to find out what the ring looks like, so indulge them with a photo.

It’s not bragging to share a picture with the exciting news. Leave out the other details, because how much it cost isn’t anyone else’s business. Everyone’s going to be checking out your hand for the first few months anyway, so make it easy for friends and family to admire from afar.

• Designate a “tweeter of honor.”

Enjoy your day and stay off your phone while still keeping everyone updated. Your wedding day will fly by, and if you’re on your phone the whole time, you’ll miss out on what’s important.

Focus on the guests who have come to celebrate with you, instead of everyone in your social media circles. You can always designate a “tweeter of honor” to keep your social networks updated throughout the day so you won’t have to. Another option is to schedule tweets beforehand, so they’re ready to go without the hassle.

• Send out traditional paper invites for the main event.

Paper invites are the way to go for the actual wedding day. In today’s technology-based world, where your guests receive hundreds of emails a day, a physical invite has become so much more special. That doesn’t mean you have to go overthe-top with an invite that sings and shoots confetti. Simple card stock and laser printing will do the trick. A paperless invite for the rehearsal dinner or morning-after brunch is a great option (especially if you want to cut down on stationery costs). Just because the invites are electronic doesn’t mean they won’t have style or be personal to you. There are plenty of sites that let you customize e-invites so they look beautiful and unique.

• Keep your public posts positive.

Confront issues directly and privately via phone or in person. We know wedding planning can be stressful at times. But before you post that status venting about all the guests who RSVP’d for too many people or complain about your future mother-in-law-zilla, pause for a second and think.

Posting something negative about your wedding will only lead to hurt feelings. Instead, politely address each situation directly as it comes your way. That means picking up the phone and explaining to your guest that you don’t have enough room for all the extras, and asking your fiancé to have a conversation with his mom. Trust us, the other route will only create animosity around your wedding.

• Spread the word about your hashtag.

Tie it into your invitations and wedding website in a creative way. We’ve gotten to the point where almost everyone is familiar with hashtags and know how to use them, so you shouldn’t feel weird about putting it out there. Think of ways you can tie it into your paper elements in a pretty or witty way, like asking guests to share photos of themselves wearing custom temporary tattoos you send along with the save-the-dates. Letting your guests know ahead of time is crucial to having a successful feed of photos.

IF YOU’RE GOING TO A WEDDING • Wait to publicly post your congratulations.

If the couple hasn’t made the announcement, then you shouldn’t spill the big news for them.

It’s exciting when you’re the first to find out your best friend or sister is getting married, but hold off on the public congrats until they’re ready to share the news themselves. They might be waiting for an important reason and there could be hard feelings involved if others find out they weren’t in the

• Private message any wedding planning questions.

It can be awkward for the couple’s other social media friends who weren’t invited. If you want to discuss wedding plans with the bride or groom, it’s polite to do it in a private way. The couple may have hundreds of Facebook friends who aren’t on the invite list, and it’s not fair if each and every detail comes up on their news feed. Brides especially love to share wedding planning details, and she’ll appreciate a friendly ear to listen if you call to find out how it’s going. This is a busy time for the couple too, so don’t be offended if they don’t keep you up to date on every single detail.

• Share pictures of the bride and groom, but respect their request if they ask you not to post photos before they do.

It’s great that you want to show what an amazing wedding the couple threw and Instagram the cake and the flowers. But some couples may want to wait to share photographic details of the wedding until they have photos from their professional photographer, or might opt for an unplugged wedding, so you should respect their choice. If you’re worried about whether you’re in the clear with posting photos, then wait until a close friend or family member of the couple does so first.

Then you’ll know it’s okay to post away.

• Leave the phone in your purse or pocket.

Posting occasionally is okay, but the couple invited you to celebrate their day, not sit there on your phone. The couple spent a lot of time planning an event that you would enjoy, so don’t spend the entire time on your phone documenting the wedding — go have some fun! It’s okay to share the love a few times, but you shouldn’t opt out of hitting the dance floor in favor of tweeting a play-by-play.

Plus, having a phone or tablet out all the time can get in the way of photos, and no one wants to look back on their wedding day to see a guest more engaged with a device than their reception.

• Follow directions for the RSVP. The couple’s inboxes are already full of wedding-related details; a text, email or private message

is likely to get lost in the mix. Most paper invitations will include an RSVP card with an addressed envelope to send it back in, and couples will look for and expect responses by mail (before the deadline). If you lose the card, then it’s okay to call and find out how the couple would prefer you to RSVP once you know whether you’ll be attending.

• Stay clear of the professional wedding photographer.

Take as many photos as you please, but don’t get in the photographer’s way. Be mindful of the photographer and videographer the couple has hired to take photos of their wedding, especially during the ceremony. A good rule of thumb is to stay seated during the ceremony (and no leaning into the aisle or raising your phone way over your head either). Standing up or moving around can be distracting to the officiant, get in the way of the pros and ruin the view for other guests. Our advice? If you must have that amazing shot of the bride’s entrance, get to the ceremony early and sit in an aisle seat to get great photos without having to pull acrobatic stunts.

• Actually use that wedding hashtag.

The couple created a wedding hashtag for good reason. If the couple has a hashtag, use it as much as possible on every photo and tweet. They’re excited to have all of their photos in one place.

Make as much effort as possible to use it and encourage others to as well.

Floral 411 for brides (MS) — Leading up to their big day, couples have lots to worry about before they finally get to walk down the aisle as husband and wife. Planning a wedding is no small task, as even the most minor details must be accounted for.

Such is the case with the floral arrangements. Though not a minor detail in any way, preparing a wedding day floral arrangement does have its minor details, particularly when it comes to the more individual aspects of a floral plan.

For instance, the following components should be considered when devising a floral plan.

• The bridal bouquet. It’s tradition for bridal bouquets to contain white or cream-colored flowers such as stephanotis, roses, orchids, or lilies.

Many bridal bouquets also include fillers like baby’s breath as well as some green or ivy, as well as ribbons or additional accessories.

• Bouquets for attendants. Attendants’ bouquets should be identical, and it’s best to coordinate these bouquets with the attendants’ gowns. Only the maid of honor traditionally receives a slightly

different bouquet, as it’s customary to give her one apart from the rest, though not significantly so.

• Boutonnieres for groomsmen and ushers. The guy’s side of the wedding also needs to take part in the floral plan. Worn in a buttonhole or lapel, a boutonniere should be worn on the left lapel and match a flower from the bridesmaids’ bouquets. The groom should also wear a boutonniere, though his should match a flower from the bride’s bouquet. When wearing boutonnieres, men should not wear additional accessories such as pocket squares.

• Flowers for special guests. Certain special guests, such as grandmothers and mothers, should receive corsages. While the corsages do not need to be identical, they should match the bridesmaids’ bouquets. It’s best to consult with a florist for a corsage color that matches all dresses, as typically the corsages must be ordered before the bride and groom know what their mothers, grandmothers and other special guests will be wearing.

A corsage that goes with anything, therefore, is ideal.

Floral Terminology

Bouquet: A dense bunch of blooms that are kept together in a bouquet holder, wired or tied with ribbon.

Crescent: One full flower and a flowering stem wired together to form a slender handle that is held in one hand.

Nosegay: Small, round bouquets composed of densely packed round flowers and fill.

Pomander:A flower-covered ball that is suspended from a ribbon. It is often carried by child attendants.

Posies: Smaller than nosegays but similar in design.

Tossing: A smaller copy of the bride’s bouquet to use in the bouquet toss.

Here’s the complete guide to wedding vendor contracts These are our five top tips for what every contract must include

By HEIDI TANDY and IVY JACOBSON, theknot.com Let’s get something straight: Every time you hire a photographer, caterer, videographer, musician, florist or hairdresser; book a chapel, park or hotel ballroom; or order something from a dress shop, dressmaker or formalwear store, you must get your agreement in writing. Until you sign a contract and put down a deposit, you have no guarantees that vendors will hold the date of your wedding. Read everything in your contracts and receipts, and be sure to document every single wedding arrangement you make.

1. Flexibility You might not want to think about an April snowstorm’s effect on your lovely garden ceremony, but if you want to ensure that the catering hall’s ballroom will be available, write that into the contract. Don’t be afraid to alter the stock contract that the vendor or manager offers. If your request is reasonable — for example, you want the supplier to be liable for potential negligence or willful misconduct — and the vendor won’t agree, look elsewhere.

2. Details Forthcoming What should you do if you’ve made some decisions but haven’t finalized details? (For example, you know you want lots of roses, but you don’t know the exact cost of the centerpieces.) You can make a contract when you book the service and include a general amount or maximum cost for services, but add a sentence that says details will be confirmed in writing by a certain date. But even with that, it’s good to be clear with your visions and ideas from the beginning to ensure that your vendor is the best match.

“For example, if you’re at the point where you’re ready to book your florist, you should make sure that you and the florist are on the same page with expectations,” says attorney and wedding lawyer Christie M. Asselin, Esq. “If you put down a deposit, but haven’t figured out what the centerpieces will look like, there may be some problems down the line. It’s important to communicate your expectations before agreeing to hire a vendor.”

3. What Goes Into It • On every contract, write: • Dates and times of all services (including the time the vendor should arrive) • Date of the wedding • Names of all parties involved in the agreement • The deposit and final payment amounts (plus the payment schedule) • Contingency plans and substitutions (if white peonies aren’t available, white garden roses will be used instead) • Detailed description of services • Some venues might also require a wedding insurance clause for liability insurance Note: When dealing with vendors that are providing a service on the wedding day itself, make sure the contract includes the name and number of the person the vendor should call if anything goes wrong or gets delayed.

4. Refunds Along with the basics, every contract should include a cancellation and refund policy on both ends that discusses what refund you will receive if you cancel and what penalty the vendor will pay if they cancel. With a refund clause, you should be able to get back a certain percentage of any deposits you made if the party is canceled by a certain date. But the closer it is to the actual wedding date, the less likely you are to get your money back — establishments and other wedding professionals are simply protecting their own business.

That said, your contracts are legally binding documents, so if your vendors fail to provide what your contract states, you could take them to court — but if you don’t hold up your end of the deal, they could take you to court as well.

selin. “Make absolutely sure that you completely understand the refund policy. Sometimes these clauses are so complex that it takes time to read through them and fully understand them.”

5. Receipts When you order something, such as a dress, a tuxedo, invitations or favors, the contract can be as brief as a store receipt. That said, it should still include: • Wedding date • Style (a number, a detailed description, or the full invitation text, for example) • Date item will be picked up • Price and payment schedule • Outline of what the price includes (such as alterations, accessories, delivery, and envelopes) And remember — don’t sign the contract unless you’re 100 percent comfortable with it, and both you and the vendor should sign and date two copies so you can each have one.

What to expect at a religious wedding ceremony (MS) — Weddings can be as unique and varied as the couples tying the knot. Quite often couples like to include certain twists on the ceremony and celebration to personalize their big days. But just as there are surprises at weddings, there also are many traditions that will be adhered to during ceremonies.

Couples who opt for religious wedding ceremonies often adhere to certain rules and traditions fostered by their faiths. Guests who may be unfamiliar with traditions outside of their own beliefs may not know what to expect during certain ceremonies.

JEWISH CELEBRATIONS The world’s Jewish population is divided among many distinctive denominations and further classifications. Although there may be subtle differences in wedding ceremonies between the sects, Jewish wedding traditions tend to be consistent across the groups.

According to the “Encyclopedia of Hinduism,” many will include the Kanyadaan, or giving away of the daughter by her father; Panigrahana, or holding one’s hands by a fire to signify the union; and Saptapadi, which is taking seven steps and making seven promises to each other before the fire. The couple may have their clothing tied together during the seven promises ritual to represent their lifelong bond.
