Special Olympics Young Athlete Program Open to All Kids Ages 2-7!

What: The Young Athletes Program is an innovative and inclusive sports/play program for ALL children ages 2 to 7, which encourages children with and without intellectual disabilities to have fun and learn sporting skills at the same time. Through the Young Athletes Program exercises and activities, a child acquires and improves fundamental skills such as balance, running, jumping, catching, throwing, and kicking. The program is also loaded with opportunities for language development, social interaction and learning numbers, colors, shapes and more. Lifelong friendships are developed within this program as acceptance of everyone’s differences is encouraged. Designed specifically for ALL children of ALL ability levels. Activities are designed to be fun and playful, increasing a child’s interest and participation Activities are adaptable based on participants’ skill level. The Young Athletes Program offers fun and fitness for ALL children of ALL ability stages! ALL children learn acceptance for one another providing a gateway to reduce bullying as the children grow older. There are no participation fees associated with this program.

General Information Mission Statement

The Middlebury Parks & Recreation Department (MPR) shall provide lands, facilities, and services for community members of all ages and all income levels. It shall provide programs for both sport and leisure. The department shall serve as instructor, facilitator, and partner in efforts to promote and improve quality of life for participants.

MPR will work with an involved public and business community to provide a healthy and aesthetically pleasing environment with opportunities for cultural growth.

The department should be flexible enough to meet the changing needs and tastes of the community, while finding creative ways to deliver recreation programs and facilities that are affordable to the residents of Middlebury.

Anyone wishing to make a reservation must complete a facility use application, available in our offices or on-line at the Town web site.

Facility Use Request Forms are considered on a first come basis, depending on availability. Rental fees may apply.

• Advanced registration is required for all programs, classes or special events, unless otherwise stated under the program information.

• All fees are due at the time of registration, we cannot ‘hold’ a space for anyone without full payment at time of registration.

• There is a $25 service fee on all returned checks and/or declined debit and credit cards.

REFUND POLICY

• Full refunds will be given for all classes by MPR. • If you need to cancel your registration before the second session of the program, we will refund you a pro-rated registration fee, minus 10% processing fee, or issue a credit, good for one calendar year, for the full class fee. After the second session is attended, eligibility for a refund is void.

• Please be aware that refund requests may take up to 30 days to process.

• Refunds will not be issued from a credit.

• Refunds will not be issued for programs costing $10 or less, unless the program is cancelled by MPR. • One-day programs, trips, or special events are not covered under this policy (i.e. no refunds or credit available) • Contracted programs by community instructors have their own guidelines, call for more detailed information.

• Every effort is made to ensure that the information in this guide is accurate. We reserve the right to add, withdraw, or revise programs or events as needed. For updated information, please visit our web site often.

ACCESSIBILITY

Individuals with or without disabilities may register for all programs offered by MPR provided program safety can be met. The Department provides reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. Contact MPR offices in advance of the program start date to discuss accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Middlebury Parks and Recreation is pleased to be able to offer scholarships to participate in all of our programs. The scholarship guidelines are based on the free and reduced lunch guidelines within the schools. If you feel like you might like to apply for a scholarship or just would like some more information please contact our office.

NON-RESIDENT POLICY

Non Residents of Middlebury are allowed to register for all Parks and Recreation programs. Non-Residents will be charged an additional fee of 15% for each program registered for. A Non-Resident is defined as someone who does not live in Middlebury or pay property taxes to the Town of Middlebury.

Young Dribblers Drop-In Basketball Program Who: Children in Grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade When: Sunday afternoons from 2pm-3pm starting December 6th What: Players will receive instruction on basic skills that will help them develop into better basketball players as they move through the youth program.

Little Tigers Basketball Program For Kids in Grades K-2 Dates: Starts 1/9/2015 and continues on consecutive Saturdays 1/16, 1/23, and 1/30, for a total of 4 sessions. There is no registration, just show up.

When: Saturday mornings from 8:30-9:30 Where: Middlebury Union High School Gym What: The Little Tigers basketball program is being offered again to children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. The MUHS boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball coaches, Kyle Lussier and Jen Heath, will direct the program. MUHS varsity basketball players will assist with the instruction.

Focus: The goal of the program is to foster interest and excitement for playing basketball. The emphasis will be on having fun while introducing important fundamental skills.

Suggested donation of $5 per session to support the MUHS basketball programs.

Bristol sees passing of an era

By GAEN MURPHREE BRISTOL — For the past 20 years, scale attendant George Smith, 89, has made taking the trash to the dump an extraordinary experience.

Bristol residents came out in droves last Saturday to thank Smith for his long service to Bristol, shake hands, and say farewell to the town’s landfill and to Smith’s quietly charismatic presence and welcoming smile.

Saturday, Aug. 1, was the Bristol town landfill’s last day.

Smith sat under an orange umbrella, sipping coffee,

shaking hands and chatting with one person after another from the ever-expanding web of friendships and community ties he’s fostered and created. A big red box of Milk-Bones sat in front of him. Even the dogs had signed the almost two-foot-by-three-foot handmade card from Bristol well wishers: “Thanks for the biscuits, WOOF! — The Dogs,” was written alongside “Gonna miss this!,” “Love,” “Thanks,” “You will be missed!” and many other sentiments.

“We’ll miss all of the friendly help at the Bristol landfill,” said Liz Sayre, 30. “It’s the people. These are the people that I’ve been seeing here since I was a little kid, (See Landfill closing, Page 12A)

Bristol ready for next steps in trash, recycling

among four Vermont companies that had been invited to respond to Middlebury’s request for proposals (RFPs) to develop the 1.42-acre, town-owned parcel off Bakery Lane, behind the Ilsley Public Library.

NexBridge was alone in responding to the RFP at Monday’s deadline.

The other groups that had been in the mix — DEW Properties LLC of

Williston; Redstone of Burlington; and The Retrovest Company, also of Burlington — elected to take a pass.

39th Annual Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble Presented by Middlebury Fitness

Sunday November 22nd, 2015 • 12pm

Please join us for the 39th annual running of the Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble. 5k and 10k scenic options available. Each runner will receive a race prize and bib with a timing chip attached. Prizes for first place finishers in 5 and 10k races (male/female) and top kids finishers under 12. Each runner will also be entered into a raffle to win prizes such as Turkeys, gift certificates and ski passes. 3 dollars from each registration will be donated to the local food shelf to help feed families in need. This program will be stimulating and a great learning environment in addition to exposing young girls to careers that may be non-traditional or unknown to them at this age.

We will have teachers and students from Middlebury College, Community College of Vermont, and women in careers that span Science, Technology, Economics, Art, and Math/Music/Mechanics (any of the M’s).

This will be a five-week course that meets from 3:30 – 5:30 pm weekly and we welcome parents to participate if they have interests in these fields, can provide transportation, if necessary, and bring snacks for the girls.

We want true engagement between professionals in these areas, guest speakers, tours of facilities, labs, and hands-on experiences. The curriculum is still in development and we are meeting with college students who have expressed interest in this STEAM program and are reaching out to teachers and professors and putting structure around the program and focusing on the curriculum delivery.

The anticipated cost of the program is proposed to be between $150 - $200 for all ten weeks and scholarships are available through Middlebury Parks & Recreation.

Dog Obedience Classes

Puppy Kindergarten Sundays 10:00-10:30 Session I: Nov 29-Jan 10 (No class Dec 27), Session II: Jan 24-March 6 (No class Feb 14): Open to puppies 10-18 weeks of age the start date of the class.

This class is absolutely critical for puppies to become well-functioning, safe happy, adult dogs. Puppies absolutely must be socialized with many humans and friendly dogs by four months of age to prevent fear towards people and other dogs. Unsocialized puppies often end up with fear aggression by the time they are one year in age. Don’t wait until your dog is an unruly adolescent with fear aggression and behavior issues, now is the time to get your puppy started on the right foot. This is a fun playtime with built in short training sessions to create a foundation of learning. See the supply list below for what to bring. Class is $60 for six weeks for Residents and $69.00 for Non Residents.

This class will show you how to gain your dog’s respect through controlling access to all things dogs love, while rewarding good behavior, and teaches obedience cues. Have an older dog? No problem!

Training needs to be improved and maintained and is a lifelong activity for both you and your dog, and provides the mental stimulation your dog needs. Register online or in person at Middlebury Rec. Dept. Open to dogs age four months or older. Some cues taught include Attention, Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Come, Leave it, Drop it, directions changes, heel, and more! Six week class is $95 for Residents and $109.25 for NonResidents Doggie Games: Sundays 12:30-1:30pm Nov 29-Jan 10 (No class Dec 27) An enjoyable class that is a unique opportunity to have fun and enjoy your dog while continuing the training dogs love by motivating dogs and owners to meet goals and perform. With tricks and games like biscuit balance, musical chairs, round up challenge, and playing possum, you end up with training opportunities like reliable sit-and down-stays. Agility fun such as the jump and short tunnel will be introduced, as well as a session on nosework. This series can be super amusing and fun for you and your dog. Eligible dogs: Must have completed basic training class here or with another trainer. This class is for friendly, confident, non-reactive dogs. There will be a lot of dogs at this

workshop running around off-leash so please do not bring reactive, fearful, or antisocial dogs.

Adult Dog Training II, Sundays 12:30-1:30pm Jan 24-March 6 (No class Feb 14) This 6-week group class expands on lessons learned in Level 1, and introduces distractions and outdoor activity, so your dog will learn to listen in many situations. Our goal is to enable owners to enjoy their dog’s joy for life by re-channeling the dog’s exuberance (hyperactivity, jumping-up, barking and pulling onleash) or poor responsiveness to owners, into equally enthusiastic obedience. Emphasis is based on superprompt sits and downs, reliable recalls, and rock-solid stays, and controlled on-leash walking and heeling.

Requirements: Pre-requisite: This class is designed for dogs who have completed Adult Dog Level I. An equivalent basic obedience course from another school may be substituted as the prerequisite with instructor permission only. Dogs must be friendly with other dogs and people.

Supply list for Dog Classes: Please bring an up to date copy of your vet records showing rabies vaccination to the first class. Puppies may not yet have rabies vaccination; simply bring records documenting the first round of shots for puppies. Other supplies include: Strong leash, treat training bag pouch (optional), training treats (pea sized training treats that your dog loves such as pieces of freeze dried liver, hot dog pieces, the dog’s own kibble, etc.) For strong pullers I recommend the “Easy Walk” harness which you can purchase online or at Agway.
