WELCOME

T O T H E 2 4 T H A N N U A L N O R T H S TA R C L A S S I C S H O W + S A L E ...............

HELLO CATTLEMEN & WOMEN! Welcome back to the North Star Classic for our 24th year here at the ND Winter Show Event Center. We are looking forward to a phenomenal year. I am so proud and thrilled to have you and the cattle here in the Winter Show barns! I am in my 3rd season here at the ND Winter Show Event Center and am happy to report we are doing pretty great. Our 86th Annual Winter Show this past March was a rough one, due to Mother Nature and a wintry mess wreaking havoc the week of Winter Show. However, we pushed through and made the best of it. We had happy fair goers with great events filling the week, as always. Just not as many people were able to make it out for the show. We are hopeful that Winter Show 2024 will find the weather a bit more cooperative! The 2024 North Dakota Winter Show will be held March 6th-10th, with the concert on March 2nd. As we head into North Star Classic this year, Kelcey Hoffmann & Jaci Cargo are back with us as the Event Coordinators. As always, these ladies, their families and crew of workers, have put in tons of time and effort planning this year’s Classic for you all to enjoy. I would like to personally thank the businesses, cattlemen & ranches that sponsored, advertised, and donated. There are some great packages available to purchase during the Cattleman’s Ball & Sale, get your bidding hands ready! This event could not happen without your support. This will be a great weekend for our cattle and ag industry. I hope you all enjoy seeing old & new friends, do some shopping with our vendors and enjoy the various breed shows & sales. I hope you enjoy the Classic, making new memories and reliving past ones! We are so happy to have the barn filled with cattle and to have you all participating!

Thanks again & see you soon. Brandee D. Moore General Manager, ND Winter Show

GREETINGS FELLOW ANIMAL AGRICULTURE ENTHUSIASTS! WITH GREAT EXCITEMENT, WE INVITE YOU TO THE 24TH ANNUAL NORTH STAR CLASSIC! Cattle from across North Dakota and surrounding states will start being stalled Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the open show to begin Friday morning. Friday evening we welcome you to attend the Cattlemen’s Ball & Sale in the South Exhibit Building. Join us for a Prime Rib Dinner as we honor the 2023 Livestock Honoree, Joana Friesz and host the Cattlemen’s Ball Sale. We will cap off the evening with raffle drawings, including $6,250.00 in cash prizes! The Cattlemen’s Ball Sale is once again filled with unique opportunities to own highly sought after genetic embryos, flushing opportunities, and memory making packages. We’re confident we’ve got something for everyone! On behalf of the livestock committee and all of us at the North Star Classic we would like to thank the cattle operations that have put forth their very best for the Cattlemen’s Ball Sale; Baumgarten Cattle Company, Spickler Ranch North, Twedt Red Angus, Hawkins Cattle, and Quandt Cattle Co. Saturday at the North Star Classic is a packed day with a youth Fitting Clinic, Fairest of Them All Jackpot Show, and Showmanship. As well as the Open Pen Show and the North Star Classic All Breeds Cattle Sale. A sale that has been known to bring in many great youth projects as well as bred heifers that will become an avid part of your herd. Sunday we hone in on the youth side of things as we have the Hubbard Feeds/Showrite Junior Breeding Heifer Show and the AgCountry Prospect Show. New this year, we are excited to offer breed steer classes in the AgCountry Prospect Show! From the exhibitors to the crews behind the scenes, we thank you for the support in the first 23 years of the North Star Classic and look forward to hosting you for year 24.

One of my favorite heifer calves we raised this year and continues to impress more and more as she matures. 17L’s maternal sister was shown very successfully by Kaylee Erdmann in 2022, being named champion Hereford at the 2022 ND State fair, and Champion Hereford female in the open show here at North Star last winter to name of few. Bred off generations of superb maternal cow power, one that will no doubt be found in the show ring and then go on to make a foundation female. Bright future ahead for 17L.

J

JOANA FRIESZ

oana Friesz- A familiar name at the North Star Classic! Whether you’ve seen her putting on the North Dakota Hereford Sale, exhibiting her own livestock, or serving donuts and treats from the Hereford trailer, she’s one you want on your team. Joana is an advocate for the North Star Classic as she sits on the livestock committee and is always willing to do what she can to ensure a successful event. Joana’s passion for the livestock industry far exceeds most. She is well known for Friesz Livestock’s herd of Hereford Cattle and multiple breeds of the highest quality breeding sheep. Not only has she raised cattle and sheep, but has previously been successful on the swine and goat production side of animal agriculture as well.

Even though her boys have aged out of the junior show ring, she has still seen much success in several open shows across the country, including several Fleece champions. Joana proves that showing livestock isn’t the only way to promote animal agriculture with Friesz Family Farm where she promotes wool products as well as homegrown lamb and beef. What Joana is likely most known for is her willingness to serve at various levels of the agriculture community. She has served as an advisor for the North Dakota Junior Hereford Association, been a local 4H leader, been a Morton County Fair Board Member, a past president of the American Corriedale Association, a past vice president and board member of

PAGE 20

the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Association and has mentored MANY youth that are wanting to get involved with a livestock project. Joana has been known to toss a few extra kids in for a national show to give them an experience they may not get anywhere else. She currently serves as the Secretary for the North Dakota Hereford Association and a member of the New Salem Almont Vo-ag Advisory Committee. Thank you, Joana, for your dedication to the livestock industry not only at the North Star Classic but in the state of North Dakota. We are honored to award you as the 2023 North Star Classic Livestock Honoree.

THANK YOU. The success of this event is due to a group of volunteers that dedicate the time to find judges, secure consignors, setup and tear down the facility, and guide staff. This group steps up to the plate to have the hard conversations and to help continue that North Star Classic tradition that we all have grown to love. We thank you for your commitment, each and every year.

The North Dakota Stockmenʼs Associationʼs headquarters is the home and command post of the 94-year-old organization. Members were proud to erect its current building in 1974, and it has served the organization well over nearly 50 years. Since then, the NDSA has grown in members and services and the Stockmenʼs Foundation was launched and functions out of this space.

The NDSA and NDSF are working together on a Building Campaign. The NDSA purchased a new lot in Bismarck in 2021. The organizations are building the new headquarters there. Ground was broken in April 2023, and the building is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. Fundraising is still ongoing and we invite you to be a part of this historic project.

Help us Honor the Past and Build for the Future! Tax-deductible giving options, including cash, cattle and commodities, are available for this project. Call (701) 223-2522 or visit www.ndstockmen.org for more information.
