Educators work to meet the diverse needs of learners that populate classrooms as an educational mission. Using the iLife and iWork suite in the math classroom is relevant for teaching and learning because the skills that require drill and practice lend themselves to the Macintosh computer and its software. Supporting the centrality of standards, the iLife and iWork Suites ensure that students truly understand math content and apply it in meaningful ways. Participants in this workshop will spend a short-time viewing examples of current trends in the digital math classroom where educational value in seen through increased student engagement and a greater focus on formative assessment practices by the instructor. Participants will then become math “students” themselves by following the workflow below: The Nose Knows

“Students” will use... Pages to create their collaborative workspace for math equations, graphs, and math videos of mathematical explanations. Photo Booth to take a profile picture of their nose. Grapher to hold the profile picture on a grid so that a rate of change or slope can be determined graphically. iMovie to record themselves teaching another how to solve math equations related to slope algebraically. Participants will join a discussion around ways the iLife and iWork Suites effectively move students up Bloomʼs Taxonomy from remembering mathematical content through rote memorization to creating and evaluating mathematical content through experiential learning.
