bubble canopy
AU16 | GALO CANIZARES a community center for holmes county, ohio
inspired by the forest stretching out in both directions from the site and borrowing from the humble tradition of the amish, bubble canopy becomes a community center firmly grounded to the natural. the swelling and sinking of the landscape and of the buildings themselves conjure an idyllic vision of rolling hills - while giving visitors a myriad of experiences in relationship to the ground plane. the domed roofs cleave apart by lines echoing the topography, allowing light into the interior. glass walls encourage visual exploration of the interior and provide a sense of wonder and mystery.
the program of the community center includes a community theater and auditorium space, music practice rooms, art classrooms, a fitness center, health and wellness center, and offices
the community-oriented program acts as a pin which connects the arts wing and the wellness/administrative wing. all spaces are radially organized around the community

AU16 | JACKIE GARGUS a fitness center for ohio state university
a redesign of the jesse owens north recreation center currently serving residents of the ohio state university, swoosh reimagines the recreation center as a space for multi-faceted wellness: mental, emotional, physical, and social. fitness and administrative space is organized along the orthagonal edge of the building, creating a hard edge to the commercial street. the large expanse of green space on the site pulls upward, swirls around and shoots outward toward campus, creating social spaces below its expanse.
the slope of the roof’s extension becomes an informal area for students to relax, a south-facing hill that looks toward campus

with the challenge of designing a booth to make the voting experience memorable, the butterfly ballot booth uses 3 areas of enclosure which provide different moments of compression and expansion, in both the vertical and horizontal directions the voting area is lit from above with skylights which intersect with the oculus of the Knowlton School of Architecture building
