RAGDALE CAMPUS MAP VISIT LAKE FOREST OPEN LANDS The Midwestern prairies owe their existence to the formation of the Rocky Mountains millions of years ago. The impact of the new mountains on wind patterns created a “rain shadow,” on the eastern side of the mountains. The community of species held by the prairie today is the culmination of nature’s work over thousands of years. Today, the Illinois prairie has 300 unique species, only 10 of which are widespread grasses. Of the forbs (non-grass species of herbaceous flowering plants) 36 are found regularly, 50 with less frequency, and the remaining are found in scattered areas. Some of the forbs found in the Illinois prairie are even classified as “rare.” Here are just a few of the plant species you might spot on a walk in the prairie: - Nodding Ladies Tresses - Golden Alexander - Wild Geranium - Blazing Star - Milkweed

History 1897 Chicago Architect Howard Van Doren Shaw designed and built the American Arts and Crafts style Ragdale House as a summer retreat for his family. 1912 Shaw built the Ragdale Ring, the outdoor theater where the family and their friends staged plays for the Lake Forest community through the 1930s. Carl Sandburg and Vachel Lindsay were friends of the Shaws and are said to have attended plays at the Ragdale Ring. 1943 The Meadow Studio was built on the prairie as a sculpture studio for Shaw’s daughter Sylvia Shaw Judson. Her most famous sculpture is the Bird Girl, which was feature on the cover of the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. 1976 Shaw’s granddaughter, poet Alice Judson Hayes, founded the Ragdale Foundation, a nonprofit artists’ community, providing a peaceful place for artists to work. 1980 The Foundation acquired the Ragdale Barnhouse from the Preston family, who had remodeled it in the 1950s. The addition of the Barnhouse made it possible for Ragdale to house twelve artists and writers at a time. Both the Barnhouse and the Ragdale House were added to the National Register of Historic Places. 1986 Alice Judson Hayes donated the buildings and the five-acre grounds to the City of Lake Forest, preserving the Ragdale property. 1991 The Friends Studio was constructed, providing live/work spaces for visual artists, dancers and composers. This large, well-lit space also functions as a place for performances and exhibitions. 2001 The Ragdale Foundation Board and Executive Director Susan Tillett secure a 99-year lease with the City of Lake Forest, ensuring Ragdale’s long-term future as a thriving artists’ community and asset of Lake Forest. 2005 Ragdale completed a $4.5 million capital campaign, which funded the renovation of the Barnhouse, upgrade of artist facilities, the restoration of Shaw’s landscape, and built a $2.5 million endowment. 2006 The Ragdale Foundation celebrates its 30th Anniversary. Highlights include a spring Ragdale Preview Day with free tours and open studios, a fall Family Day, and a 30th Anniversary Alumni Exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center, opening in November 2006. 2007-08 Meadow studio designed and built by IIT Architecture Students. 2011 Renovation of the Ragdale House.

EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT We believe: • Everyone deserves equal access to a full, vibrant creative life, which is essential to a healthy and democratic society. • Cultural equity is critical to the long-term viability of the arts sector. • Inequity and injustice occur when individuals have unequal access to resources. • We must all continually hold ourselves accountable, because acknowledging and challenging our inequities is how we can effect change. • Artists, their art, their process, and the organizations they create and support play an essential role in witnessing, demonstrating, and providing inspiration to resolve societal inequity and injustice.
We strive: • To create a culture of equity by ensuring that all people—including but not limited to those who have been historically underrepresented based on race/ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, socioeconomic status, geography, citizenship status, or religion—are represented in the development of Ragdale’s policies; its support of artists; the nurturing of accessible, thriving venues for expression; and the fair distribution of programmatic, financial, and informational resources. • To pursue cultural consciousness throughout our organization through substantive learning, transparent policies, and consistent evaluation. • To commit time and resources to expand more diverse leadership within our board, staff, and advisory bodies. • To acknowledge and dismantle inequities and barriers to entry within our policies, systems, programs, and services. • To establish and nurture programs and policies that engage the full breadth of society.
