PREPARING NIGERIA'S AUTO INDUSTRY FOR GLOBAL DOMINATION.

G

rowing up as a kid in a small city was very fun for me, great parents, awesome siblings to constantly pick fights with, great school, and the opportunity to be taken to school every day with either a Volkswagen Golf GTI mark II or a Mercedes Benz 230E, V-boot as we called it. Unlike other kids of my age group, I never felt enthusiastic about football and it was quite difficult sleeping as everyone wanted to discuss who was where on the table and I didn't care much for that. Rather than play an empty bottle of water after school with the boys, I always preferred to stay alone, close to the car park to identify cars through the names written behind them. Blessed are the days of the Peugeot 505 Evolution, the Datsun Laurel and the Toyota Starlet. Fast forward to senior secondary school and Sodiq Sanni came into the picture, my first experience with a fellow car enthusiast with whom I had conversations and arguments around numerous cars! Ah! Those were Good times. My university days were no better but I met with some rather excellent car fans. Aside from being car enthusiasts, we yearned to have an easily accessible Nigerian produced

car magazine, our very own TopGear Magazine. While my fashion enthusiast friends in the university had unlimited access to Nigerian Fashion magazines, I on the other hand had zero access to Nigerian car magazines because there was hardly any in existence. It's an awfully frustrating situation, one similar to that of a sexually perverted man who has never gotten any woman in his life. I never had access to car magazines growing up and I still don't have access to them as a young adult, so the thought came up, why not start one? and so, I and some other frustrated fellows decided to make one for ourselves, then the journey to Nigeria's first automotive magazine Carvolution Magazine began. This magazine is dedicated to all car enthusiasts/ petrol heads in Nigeria and Africa at large who have always wanted a thoroughbred magazine by fellow enthusiasts. We have started this and we shall do all that can be done to keep it exciting and distant from mediocrity. We will also do what we can to ensure consistency with this

magazine. I appreciate the efforts of the contributors of this magazine for your great work, I also appreciate Mr Suleiman, Foluso and Miss Titilope for t h e i r fe r ve n t s u p p o r t t o w a rd s ensuring this magazine is published. I also appreciate the folks at Seechs Media for their patience and a great design. I thank you all. At Motoring Nigeria, our aim is to promote Nigeria's growing car, bike and motorsport culture and contribute our development to Nigeria's automotive industry in the face of the revolution its currently undergoing. With Carvolution Magazine, we aim to inspire a new generation of automotive enthusiasts, engineers and disruptors in the industry in preparation for the global domination of the automotive world because whether you like it or not, Nigeria's automotive industry is coming! And that's saying it the way it is.

once was going to show a client who doubles as a friend a vehicle he was very much interested in purchasing. I'd bathed my baby at a car wash and was looking forward to the praises from my friend's lips. Of course, he loved the black exterior colour, styling, body build, alloy wheels blah blah blah, but his praises came to an abrupt end when he popped the hood. 'ogun o' (god of iron) was the next thing I heard. His act didn't end there. He literally sang ogun's oriki and danced round the car several times before coming to a final stop affront the vehicle. Then he clasped his hands together, went on his knees and began worshiping the engine. It was an entity truly worthy of worship; a basket mouthed threeeeeeee pooooooiiiiiinnnnt fiiiiiiiiiive (3.5L) V6.

The same engine sitting underneath the hood of a Lexus RX350 SUV. Here's a little analogy to help you understand; it's like a seven year old adolescent carrying the genitalia of a thirty-year old adult inside his pant. At this point, I was swollen to my elastic limit and couldn't hold my laughter any longer. I looked down at the kneeling clown and pictured his thought. He must have likened it's fuel intake rate to the flow of running water in the gutters during a heavy downpour. Now, imagine what his reactions to the engine seated underneath a 2010 Ford Mustang GT would be? Or Mercedes AMG CLS63

He literally sang ogun's oriki a n d d a n c e d ro u n d t h e c a r several times before coming to a final stop affront the vehicle. Then he clasped his hands together, went on his knees and began worshiping the engine

5.5L V8 Bi-turbo? Yeah, you read that right, bi-freakingturbo!In my line of work, clients hardly give cars with bigger engine displacement a second look. In fact, I've had folks request for inline-four engines popularly called 'four plugs' that can travel from Lagos to Abuja, a distance of over 600km, with their fuel gauge indicator still sitting on full tank at arrival. Haba! No bother buy fuel bros, just find motor wey dey drink water. LOL. But wait a minute,, who wouldn't desire such? Especially this period when petrol sells at #140 per litre. It's this same reason some folks operate generators with their fuel release switch in half-on position these days. 5 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

So what makes the V6 engine this dreaded? Very simple; fuel consumption!. A V6 is a V shaped engine with six cylinders mounted on the crankshaft in two banks of three cylinders each, usually set at either a 60 or 90 degree angle to each other. The I4 popularly called '4 plug' is a type of engine with all its four cylinders arranged in a straight line. The few advantage of the former over the latter lies in its greater power output and smoother drive, but these are achieved at the mercy of your gas tank. From my little walk around cars, no matter how economically driven I've handled a V6, it still doesn't match up to an I4 in terms of fuel economy.

One other advantage of the V6 is it's rapid response when there's a need for quick overtake. That instant surge of power matched by an equivalent gear selected by the gearbox in an auto transmission is thrilling. It's more energetic compared to an I4 that appear to doubt it's decision when the accelerator is slammed on.Little wonder the few who intentionally scout for V6 engines are travelers while adrenaline junkies love the American muscles more. Ask me to define an American muscle and I'll say; it's when a V8 sits inside a Volkswagen Beetle! By the way, that's the only time I'll ever be willing to drive a Beetle. Pipe dream right? Well, we'll see about that! It's also pertinent to note that your car irrespective of its engine displacement will consume fuel at a lesser rate on an high or expressway than within the town where more braking has to be done in traffic jams and pothole maneuvers.

6 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

Ask me to define an American muscle and I'll say; it's when a V8 sits inside a Volkswagen Beetle!

There are also those who desire a combination of I4 engines, better power output and a relatively good fuel economy. I guess it's for this same reason some turbocharged four cylinders were birthed. A typical example is the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.4L Turbo spitting about 180 hp and its higher output version producing between 215 and 230 hp. It's a cool figure but still 30 knots behind the un-turbocharged 2007 Toyota Camry factory fitted to produce about 268 horsepower my friend danced around. Even though she must have lost some horses over the years, you can still bank on her for speed, power and acceleration, but if I'm to make a pick of a V6, I'll rather stick to a 3.0L. Though of lesser power output, life still makes more sense that way #smiles

MN INTERVIEW

H

to

n this interview, Motoring Nigeria caught up with the founders of Arewa Customs, an auto tuning company based in Kaduna. Muftahu Abdulsalam and Muktar Hamza talk about their foray into the auto tuning business and what drives them to do what they do.

I

1. Please introduce yourself(ves) and tell us a little about your background? We the architects and initiators of Arewa Customs Autos. Muftahu. A. Abdulsalam (Director General) & Muktar Hamza Makarfi (CEO). Both Hail from Arewa(Northern Nigeria). I Muftahu from Katsina State, attended Universal Academy Primary school and Kaduna Capital School secondary and Muktar From Kaduna, attended Tarbiyya Primary School and Technical College Kaduna. We Met at Kaduna Polytechnic in 2007 where we acquired our certificate in Architecture 2. When did you start your business and how much capital did you use to start? We kicked off in 2009, With Zero Naira Capital, per say. Unlike most businesses set up with basic aim to make money.... Our Capital was purely hobby and passion based. Therefore, financial capital was undefined. 3. What services do you offer? Our Brand Started with sale of petty polo stickers and other bumper sticker decals, that gradually rose up to a full automobile customization company, tuning cars, bikes and any other thing on wheels. Our products and services on EXTERIOR: Paint job, Car wrap, Vertical doors (Lambo doors), bodykits, Rims/Wheels, GT-Spoilers, & General body fabrications. INTERIOR: Leather

Seat/Door panel Upgrades, In-Car entertainment systems (DVD players/Monitor screens), Stereo and Custom sound build, & general restoration old dead beaten rides.... We also host auto shows and exhibitions. We are Naijas' very own "Pimp My Ride". 4. What inspired your business idea? The insatiable need for uniqueness and difference. Especially in our personal and the public rising desire for pimped out and custom built rides, was the main drive that pushed our ideas beyond our limits....towards an enterprise which was yet untapped. 5. What are you currently working on? Currently, we are working on a very interesting project, a Chevrolet Camaro SS 2008 model, we initially installed manual Lambo doors on it, which the client now needs it to be more upgraded to automatic Lambo door (fully automated operation of the door opening to closing all by the press of a remote control or button). It's actually the 1st of its kind we've ever done.... Then two Nissan 350Zs 2004 and 2006 models vinyl wrap and a 1999 BMW E36 convertible, a masterpiece yet to be unveiled. 6. Tell us about Innovation 2015 and your newly opened garage? Innovations 2015 Motto is a bold step to new projects we've not done before, at the same time doing old project in a new way. like car wrapping....Vertical Doors and custom sound and visual entertainment builds. Talking about doing things New, Alhamdulillah to our newly moved in garage. The place, CAR CRAFT WORKSHOP, is an ultra modern workshop, built to international standard. Which basically 7 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

offers mechanical and electrical diagnostic repairs. We Arewa Customs, some say: "So far, we the best in the game". Teaming up with them as the body and customs aspect, makes both of us fully operational in this auto haven. "After all, what's a surgeon without a theatre?".....So our new workshop is a very big achievement in 2015. A Home to cater for our beloved babes (Rides). 7. What consistently motivates you in this business? Motivation as we all know is the fuel that drives us on the road to success, our parents, family & friends support, we would say have made us come this far. And the need to be free from 9-5 and self reliance. And to bring to our own community what seemed to be only reached oversees....right in their door step. 8. What are the challenges you face in the automotive business? From the start, we faced a fair amount of challenges, of doubts unavailability of custom parts. But that is past now, thanks to the technology age, we're able to source our parts easily from all around the world in the online market. One ultimate challenge we face is the unsatisfying hunger for creativity, such a dynamic enterprise has a consistent hunger for new ideas and designs for every project, because it's not ideal repeating designs, which constantly requires an exhilarating mental thoughts. So this challenge we'll say is "Forever in Existence". 9. Who are your business role models ? Self Made Ryan, owner of WestCoast Customs who did all the builds in the all time famous MTV Base "Pimp My Ride" hosted by the Rapper Exibit. . And our godfather and pioneer in customization in Nigeria Mahmud Zayyad (May His Soul Rest In Peace), who designed the Peugeot 505 Super Evolution. Are prominent in our field and we'll forever respect their time and works. 10. Any other interests aside the automotive industry? As We earlier Mentioned, we're trained building architects. 'Wetin Our Papa paid school fees for...Lol' we also do really love it, it's all encircled around design and creativity...so we also engage in building designs any day, any time... 'if moto no wan gree pay well'. 11. What are your expectations for the year ahead and where do you see your brand in 5 years? In the very near future, we expect our approach and endeavour to open new horizons in the auto biz, to bring in motorsports legally, and to promote car culture in the country. Such events aside creating job opportunities & financial revenue it will also serve to promote peace and unity, by bringing together auto enthusiasts from all regions in the country. Where we see our brand in 5 years, like any positive entity, growth and progress is inevitable, no specifics, but certainly. Count down 5 years from now, we'll

8 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

start picking Old dead beaten rides off our Fans front door to get 'em pimped on TV.#ArewaCustoms "Pimp My Ride" 12. What do you do to relax ? I know for people like you, the line separating work and play is a very thing one... To Relax, we cruise in our rides and park them at a landscape spot with a clear view, and just sit and stare at them to spend the moment. The fact we love what we do, while we work we feel the thrill of play as we do our work. Eventually that thin line separating work and play is non-existent. It's our total way of Life. 13. Any advice for other entrepreneurs out there? Our advice to all individuals not only entrepreneurs striving out there, is to identify a passion, and tailor your ability to that idea. Take calculated risks and perseverance, if you fail, try again. To be utmost successful you need two things: "passion and ability". Because to have the passion and no ability, or ability without the passion is only slavery to a job, so both must go together for you to be who you wanna be. Stay Humble. 14. A question I never fail to ask car enthusiasts I meet...mine is a1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, so what is your favourite car of all time? Interesting, as for me Mufty: "The Japanese Wizard, Nissan GT-R. Nicknamed 'Godzilla'..... As for my Partner Mukky Makarfi: "Supercar Killer, Nissan GT-R 'Godzilla' any day any time"..... Hahah, it's obvious we have the same choice of favourite car.... But we still on the claim of who copied who?.....Lol. thing is that car is a piece of work! 15. How can we reach you for business? Our Workshop is situated at Address: KM 2 Zaria-Kaduna Expressway, Unguwan Kaji, Kaduna,Kaduna State. Tel: 08065395560, 07034727227. DID YOU

KNOW

...Richard Francis

S

ince the start of time, Man has always had a thing for riding and wheels and this has developed in time either through obsession or just mere curiosity. There're a lot of history behind the good, bad, ugly and sexy cars we have around us today which unfortunately some of us know nothing about them. The history behind this beautiful is really long and seems to never end. Anyway, I wouldn't say I know them all but the little I know, I'll share with you. DID YOU KNOW? The first world speeding ticket was issued in the year 1899, to a German taxi driver for driving at 12mph. Yes, I agree with you that it's absurd! But rules are rules. So the next time you get pulled over for speeding, have it in mind that you not the first neither will you be the last. The Hennessey Venom GT is the fastest car with 270.49mph. This was achieved at the Kennedy Space Center on February 14th, thus becoming the fastest production car in the world by beating the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport's previous record of 269.86 mph. Amazing right!

In 1807 Nicéphore Niépce and his brother Claude are believed to have built the world's first internal combustion engine. They called it a Pyréolophore. However, they chose to install it in a boat not a car. That same year a Swiss inventor François Isaac de Rivaz finished his own internal combustion engine and used it to create the world's first internal combustion engine vehicle. In 1907, the world's first purpose-built motor racing circuit was opened near Weybridge in Surrey, England, United Kingdom. The circuit which was 2.75-mile (4.43 km) hosted its last race in 1939 and today part of it forms the Brooklands Museum, a major aviation and motoring museum, as well as a venue for vintage car, motorcycle and other transport-related events. There are more than 15 million cars in Lagos, Nigeria alone. A research by NAICOM (National Insurance Commission) shows this. The Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited (IVM) made history late in November 2014, when it unveiled 500 made-in-Nigeria cars, built at its plant in Umudim, Nnewi, Anambra State, thus becoming the first indigenous manufacturer to achieve this milestone. The dashboard was originally a piece of wood attached to the front of a horse-drawn carriage that would prevent mud from splattering all over the drive as the horse galloped. The height is the world's lowest street legal car. The “flatmobile" built by Perry Watkins is just 19inches from the ground. Flat, asphalt roads were introduced for cyclists and not for motorists as it's commonly believed.

The average car like a Toyota for example has about 30,000 parts, from the doors to the windows, wipers, headlamps, pointers, down to the shock absorbers including the smallest screws, nuts and bolts.

The price of the most expensive vehicle ever made, a 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coup is $9.7million.

Yes, there has been some little arguments here and there about who created the first car but please allow me to clear the air.

The fine for the first motor offense, which occurred in the U.K was just 5 shillings. It was issued to Gas Engine pioneer John Henry Knight in 1895 for not having a license and driving at 9mph...Very hilarious!

In 1768, the first steam powered automobile capable of human transportation was built by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot.

The world's first car number plates were issued by the French police in 1893. The first petrol pump was installed in USA in 1906.

In 1807, François Isaac de Rivaz designed the first car powered by an internal combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen. In 1886 the first petrol or gasoline powered automobile the Benz Patent-Motorwagen was invented by Karl Benz. This is also considered to be the first "production" vehicle as Benz made several identical copies. Not satisfied? You need help. The first woman to drive a car in Nigeria was Funmilayo RansomeKuti.

The world's largest speeding fine of $1000000 was given to a Swedish man, who got caught while driving at a speed of 180mph in Switzerland. Adolf Hitler, while in prison wrote to a Mercedes-benz car dealership for a car loan. The city with most Rolls Royce per capita is Hong Kong. Volkswagen named many of their cars after winds. Passat (After The German Word For Trade Wind), Golf (After Golf Stream), Bora (After Bora), Polo (After Polar Winds), and Jetta (After Jet Stream). Toyota is the largest car manufactured on daily basis. It produces 13,000 cars everyday.

The first well documented automobile accident happened on the 31st of August, 1869 in the City of Birr in Ireland. No need to share all the gory details with you.

"The new car smell" composes of over 50 volatile organic compound. Fortunately, they are non-toxic. Try not to imagine if they were toxic. One out of every four cars produced in the world is from China.

There are over 1 billion vehicles in the world and it keeps rising annually. As of 2010 there were more than one billion motor vehicles in use in the world excluding off-road vehicles and heavy construction equipment.

The automobile is the most recycled product in the world. If you were to travel vertically at 60mph, it would take you 6 months to reach the moon.

The United States has the largest fleet of motor vehicles in the world, with 239.8 million in 2010. Vehicle ownership per capita in the US is also the highest in the world with 769 vehicles in operation per 1000 people.

60 million cars are produced per year, that is 165,000 cars per day. 1 billion cars are in active use across the world. Holding a remote car key close to your head doubles its range. Your skull acts as an amplifier. 9 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

Eleko Motor Race: This is an off-road racing event which is held monthly at Eleko beach, Lagos State. Initiated by Bamidele Fadimiluyi & Edward Osakwe. The idea for this event came up as a result of frustration when Bamidele, driving through the Lekki expressway met a dead end as a result of a protest by the locals decided to take the beach line route. Here, you meet a bevy of off-road enthusiasts with their rigged out cars and bikes taking their turns to compete, trying to win the race which for now is mostly a time trial event. RCMC Bikers Converge An event put together by Rock City Motorcycle Club (RCMC) Abeokuta. The maiden edition held last year and it was a blast as more than 200 bikers from Nigeria and beyond witnessed the 3-day event. This event is also characterized by various activities aimed at raising funds for charity. Planning is already in high gear for the second edition which will take place from 24th June to 26th June 2016.

Koenigsseg Regera.

o my brief was simple, my editor asked me to blow his mind and regale him of a car that he probably wouldn't drive in his lifetime, a car that would never ever be seen on a Nigerian road (I repeat never ever for emphasis sake). There youhave it my brief. Now this is a tough one considering fact that if you spend a lot of time on this Instagram page ...(I sight you @SupercarsofNigeria) you'll be left with just one thing..... Never underestimate Nigerians! We're one heck of petrol heads around here, I mean you see some cars on the page and you're like .... In Nigeria already? Sigh. All paid for in

cash. no instalment or fear of repossession. Oh well, I digress. The point is, what car could I possibly write about that might seemingly look similar to my brief? Well, the good lord opened my eyes to Scandinavia most precisely the land of birth of one of my favorite footballers Zlatan Ibrahimovic . Well, by now you have guessed that my destination country is Sweden. But while the swedes are noted for giving us Volvo and the seatbelt( yup, I'm sure you didn't know that). In a quiet town of Ă‚ngenholm, a Rich kid decided to contribute his quota to the world and give us hyper cars. That man's name is.......

11 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

Christian von koenigsseg. And the car that eventually ticked all boxes is none other than the Koenigsseg Regera. Here's the thing, I could have chosen any Koenigsseg and they would still have passed the bill, but why choose just any Koenigsseg, when you can have the latest, right. The Regera is coined from the Swedish word meaning "To rule" "To reign" which is quite apt considering the fact that at 0-100km/h it clocks at just under 2.8secs making it the fastest accelerating car in the world! Koenigsseg produces fewer cars in its lifetime than Ferrari produces in a week, yet the car manufacturer happens to stay in the headlines for the most positive reasons .

The Regera adds to that glowing list of impressive headlines, as the first hybrid hypercar that would be built by the Swedish company. The figures are somewhere beyond being merely mind blowing . The Regera follows the example set by the Mclaren P1, the Ferrari LaFerrari, and the Porsche 918 by using a hybrid drivetrain, albeit one completely unlike anything we've seen before. It uses both a twinturbocharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine and three electric motors for a total combined output of 1.11 megawatts, which converts to 1509 metric horsepower—or 1489 horsepower on America's SAE measuring stick. Koenigsegg claims the 0-to-400-kph (249 mph) acceleration time of less than 20 seconds.

Let's talk about those eyes ..... They say, the eyes is the window into the soul (don't ask who said it, methinks it makes sense) and a peek into the soul of the Regera through the headlamps might actually convince you. As someone who has a background in creative design, I'm an absolute sucker for innovation and non- conformity, and with this piece of beauty, the good people at Koenigsseg achieved that. What makes it even more spectacular is the fact that have all had cockpits like blinged-up Group C racers, but the Regera looks plush and spacious by comparison, the big central display screen even features Apple CarPlay. More Technical Chops.... The drivetrain. The gasoline side features the novel Koenigsegg Direct Drive transmission: In effect, a singlespeed gear reduction for the mighty V-8 engine. Between the engine and the 2.85:1 rear final drive there's no conventional gearbox, just a hydraulic coupling that, when closed, links

12 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

they achieved this feat entirely inhouse without the input of professional designers(how cool is that?). The Regera is styled to be a luxurious alternative to the already existing Agera model, from the front it looks almost different (those eyes!!!) The side and rear profiles are dominated by the aero channels and the huge deployable rear wing. The cabin is the biggest surprise; Koenigsegg's previous models

the two directly. Below 30 mph, this can slip slightly, but it isn't a proper clutch and won't provide propulsion at very low speeds where the Regera relies instead on its electric motors. Above 30 mph, the Regera's engine speed and wheel speed rise in direct proportion, with the engine's 8250-rpm redline corresponding to the top speed of 249 mph. In its innovativeness Koenigsegg built a car with one gear that uses electric power and an internal combustion engine working in concert to create one of the fastest accelerating cars of all time. And according to Jalopnik,This is how it works.

The Regera uses Koenigsegg's 5.0 liter turbo V8 along with three electric motors. They are powered by a nine-kWh, 620volt, water-cooled battery pack, which Koenigsegg says is the most power dense battery pack ever created for a production car. The electric motor on the crankshaft makes 215 horsepower

(and also acts as a starter motor/generator) while the electric motors on the rear wheels make 241 horsepower each. This also allows for torque vectoring between the rear wheels. Real torque vectoring, not brake actuated. Okay...at this juncture I know you're probably bored reading all that. I'm also bored writing them also.

The fun of down shifting and planning for the acceleration is quickly forgotten and not missed. It needs to be experienced

The Koenigsseg is truly unique among Hypercars and in the words of company founder “This is of course very different to what people are used to in sports cars," "It's nice to shift down, hear the engine howl and then shoot off. However, given the massive electrical support and the power of the internal-combustion engine over 2500 rpm, the experience is otherworldly. At low rpm, the engine will still feel truly monstrous as the combined torque is unbelievable. The fun of shifting down and planning for the acceleration is quickly

forgotten and not missed. It needs to be experienced.”Well, good luck experiencing the Regera as the base price for a single unit is estimated to be $1,890,000 without taxes or Charges. And to make it more exclusive, only 80 units will be produced, to put that into perspective as at 2014, there were 1645 dollar billionaires in the world. Even most billionaires won't have this car. What then is our fate as per the masses? We can only drool and dream. But while you're dreaming and driving the Koenigsegg, remember to use your seatbelt and drive carefully. AUTOMOTIVE MUSCLE LIST 2016

n 2013, the former minister of trade industry and investment Olusegun Aganga unvield the grand plan to revive and rebuild the Nation's almost nonexistent automotive sector by introducing the nation's automotive bill which in simple terms is aimed at igniting a shift from dependence on imported cars to locally produced cars. Fast forward to 2015; the automotive revolution is in high gear and we have more than 12 assembly plants in the country(proposed and completed).

I

generate high octane impacts on the sector. These are the people we refer to as the muscles of the industry, the movers, shakers and disruptors on the frontline of Nigeria's automotive revolution.

The list contains 10 people we are most likely to hear about through the year 2016. We only have 10 people on the list for 2016. Right! I know what you are thinking, too small a number right, don't worry, we just received a shipment of our new ultra bright torch with a beam strong enough to bring to light every individual doing a It has no doubt been a good year for the industry and the commendable job when it comes to the development of progress achieved wouldn't have been possible without Nigeria's automotive sector. We are watching! the efforts of individuals whose works directly or indirectly 14 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

10. Bamidele Fadimiluyi | Initiator,Eleko Motor Race. The Nigerian Italian motorsport enthusiast, passionate about motorsport development in Nigeria. He started the Eleko Motor Race, an off-road racing event which is funded by himself and his friend Edward Osakwe. The first edition started on the November of 2014 with two subsequent races in 2015 the idea was to have monthly events but has become less frequent in recent times. Let's just say it is too early to judge the success or failure of this event because we know quitting is not in his dictionary. 2016 will be an year of great things regarding Motorsport in Nigeria therefore stay tuned. 9. Mirko Plath | Managing Director, Weststar Associates. Mirko Plath began his career at Daimler AG, the popular manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz, and has a strong background in sales and marketing within the automobile sector. The Boss of Weststar Associates, He is responsible for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class having 78% of market share of Nigerian luxury car market. He has also been able to expand the portfolio of his company to include the distributorship of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles which means that there is a high chance that the brand new Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge or Ram brand that your neighbour will acquire in 2016 might come from his dealership. 8. Chief Michael Ade Ojo | Founder/Director Elizade Nigeria Limited. We know him to be the largest distributor of Toyota vehicles in the country. Sometime in May 2015, he disclosed that a Toyota assembly plant will be ready in Nigeria between July and August 2015. In December, he announced the completion of the plant with production to commence in the second quarter of 2016. Will Nigerians witness the assemblage of their best-selling Toyota models in the country in 2016? Time will tell. 7. Chief Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma | Chairman, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing-IVM The Nnewi born chairman of the first indigenous automobile manufacturing company in Nigeria IVM received accolades from all and sundry when he introduced his company to Nigerians a few years ago. His plant manufactures all types of automobiles except sedans. We hear he is perfecting his grand plan that will help him achieve his dream of making imported "tokunbo" cars unviable in Nigeria through his affordable sedans. Will Nigerians in 2016 see the introduction of IVM Fox sedan and Amazon models? Wait we shall. 6. Muftahu Abdulsalam | Director General, Arewa Customs Autos. One of the most talented youths in the industry, he and his equally talented partner Muktar Hamza Markafi who is the CEO can turn your papa's aged and derelict BMW E30 under that mango tree in your compound into a dazzling beauty. Trained as an architect, he has been into the game since his days in school and has impressively honed his skills with his educational training coming in handy. He had some impressive projects in 2015 all tagged under "Innovation 2015". Let's see if Arewa Customs Autos will continue to push the limits of Auto tuning in 2016.

5. Okao Oduagbon | Founder and President, Motorcycle Sports Club of Nigeria (MSCN) A passionate biker and motorsport enthusiast who is committed to making motorsport a mainstream sport in Nigeria. He started with motocross races in 2012 in Evuobanosa, Edo State which has morphed into The NIGERIA Superbike road race, held annually on the last weekend in November, in Urhonigbe, Edo State. The 2015 edition was a success and plans are on for an even bigger 2016 edition. Not bad at all for someone who has been funding the development of motorcycle sports in Nigeria from his personal limited resources. Our Calendar is already marked for the 2016 Bikers Trophy (The BT) race day. 4. Kunle Shonaike | Founding CEO, Automedics Limited. Widely known for his efforts in educating Nigerian motorists and offering auto technicians skills-upgrade training for higher competencies to work on modern vehicles. He organized the first edition of The Autofest in 2015, a well promoted weeklong car show/training of sorts which more than 3,000 auto technicians registered for. Motoring Nigeria was surprised that not much was said or heard of after the event but sources say it was marred by low attendance at the start of the show, But hey! It does not come as a big surprise, after all, it's the first edition. We don't know how successful the event was but one thing we know is that the second edition will be bigger and better than the first. Can't wait! 3. Tomi Hodonu | General Manager, Cheki.com.ng The only female on our list, Tomi Hodonu is one of those few individials who are bent on disrupting the way buyers purchase cars in Nigeria. For someone who was in the US e-commerce industry when it began with years of experience to boast of, she has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with in the industry. Checki.com is said to be Nigeria's foremost car advertising website with over 78,000 cars as at July 2015. We are expecting her to achieve even higher than that in 2016. 2. Cosmas Maduka | Chairman/CEO, Coscharis Motors. The billionaire who started from fixing cars, started Coscharis from scratch and built it into a conglomerate. Earlier in the year, Ford announced that they will assemble the Ranger pickup in Nigeria in conjunction with Coscharis starting in the fourth quarter of 2015 and they kept to their promise. Coscharis Group are the sole distributors of BMW and Land Rover cars in West Africa. 1. Engr Aminu Jalal | Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council. The tale of the current revolution in Nigeria's automotive sector cannot be told without the mention of his name. The Nigerian automotive sector has witnessed a huge development under his leadership. Not long ago he awarded 12 licences for the establishment of 12 new vehicle assembly plants in the country. He has announced plans to gradually shift the focus from bringing back assembly operations to local content development and quality control. He surely still has a lot of work to do and luckily for the industry, he knows that. We expect to hear a lot about him in 2016.

MN INTERVIEW

we were into events management and packaging. I also ran a business consulting firm(Platinum Ideas and Innovations),a media outfit(Chronx Media int'l),and an entertainment outfit(Chronique Records Nigeria). I've also been into partnership businesses with some other people. I was a partner at "Lyrics Int'l Magazine",where I had a column called "Chronique's Tyme Out". I was also a managing partner with "Victory Multimedia Studios" where we were into record and video production,3D animations, movie productions, etc. Outside all of these, I also went into a partnership business with my dad, and we were into the distribution of cement in large quantities. Now, I tried doing all of these almost concurrently but it didn't work out well. I was largely inexperienced, and later discovered that each of these businesses, were businesses that needed a lot of work to manage. It was totally not possible for me In this exclusive interview, Rio Ighodalo Ignis, CEO of AutoLounge, an auto sales company located in Lagos talks about his to handle all at the same time, with my small crew of staffs/workers. The partnership with my dad didn't work business and the perks and shortcomings of the industry. because after some time, the relationship was tilting towards father and son relationship instead of being 1. Please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your more of business and you know when sentiments gets background: into business, it's bound to fail. My name is Rio Ighodalo Ignis also known by my alter ego, Rio Bill$. I'm a young Nigerian entrepreneur/businessman who I started my first business(Chronique Records Nigeria),in hails from Ekpoma in Edo state, Nigeria. My dad is from Edo state, and my mum is from Ondo state. I was born into a family 2006 and registered the company in 2008. In a nutshell, I've been in business now as an entrepreneur, for 9 years of bankers(my dad and mum are both retired bankers) and my and majority of my earlier days in business, were more parents have over 60 yrs of banking experience(combined of a learning period. I must say that I'm happy I started together) with banks like Barclays bank(U.K),Merchant those other businesses because at the end of the day, I adventurers(U.K),CBN(Nigeria),First Bank Nigeria learnt a lot from them, which I now apply in running the plc(Nigeria),Cooperative bank(Nigeria),etc. I studied Auto-Lounge franchise. I started the Auto-Lounge-Byaccountancy at the Lagos City Polytechnic, Lagos, Nigeria, and Chronx brand/auto business, in 2012. Although, I had I'm currently a student member of the Association of Certified flirted around car sales business before then, but wasn't Chattered Accountants(ACCA),UK. I'm a Christian by religion, too into it then. and I'm from a "large family". I'm my mum's only son and have 3 beautiful sisters. I'm the 8th child of my dad and I have 14 I started with "ZERO" capital. The only capital I needed siblings(we're 15 in number). I have bankers, I.T consultants, then, was my brain and luckily for me, I'm blessed by medical doctors, surgeons, engineers, lawyers, pharmacists, God with a certain level of wisdom/intelligence. I started economists, etc as siblings. *winks*. out by trying to help my brother-in-law sell his Toyota I'm not from a "wealthy family" as such, but also not from a Avensis and based on the calls I was getting, I thought it poor home. Let's just say we're lost somewhere in the middle class. My parents were quite strict(both of them) while we were would be nice to continue. I reached out to couple of car growing up and as such, it helped to guide and direct me on the dealers within my neighbourhood and tried selling their vehicles for them, and that's how the business kicked up. right path. Guess that's enough for now...*winks* I went into automobile business after I got fed up with my 2. When did you start your business and how much capital did experiences running the previous businesses. I discovered most of them(especially the record label), you use to start: were quite capital intensive and that the little amount I Well, I've started several businesses and had to shut down was spending in bits to push these businesses, were some temporarily, due to the work load involved in running all going down the drain without significant results. I concurrently. Reason is cause, people aren't always reliable when you hand over certain stuffs to them; no one can run your decided to pick a business that would bring in steady funds which could be deployed, into the other businesses business for you like you'd do it. I once ran an event bit by bits.... management outfit called "The Thrilogy Events Company" and 16 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

MN INTERVIEW

3. What services do you offer? We offer sales and rental services, freight/clearing services, sales of vehicle parts, logistics handling, etc at AutoLounge-By-Chronx. At Auto-Lounge-By-Chronx,we offer services to clients in all cadres of life, and from all walks of life. These services cuts across both luxury and economy services. We do not discriminate against clients with low income cos we know fully well that all fingers aren't equal. We're into the sales of luxury vehicles, mid-range vehicles, and also armoured vehicles. We also offer some specialized services for owners of armoured cars. Whether you're looking to purchase a vehicle, or sell one, we'd be at your service. We're also working on an exclusive luxury service package for top of the range clients. 4. What inspired your business idea? Like I stated earlier, I was fed up with spending and not receiving on other businesses I had started on my own, and those that I partnered with others in. At that time, I decided to diversify into something that could fetch almost instant returns. But then again, as a new entrant into the business, I had to be innovative in my approach to the business, and to constantly brainstorm on how to be different from my competitors. I kept coming up with new ideas on how to move my business forward. I'd also state here, that the passion I have for the business, also inspired me. If I had no passion for this, I wouldn't even be here in the first place. 5. How has the 70% tariff on new cars affected your business? Well, that tariff actually affects cars that are fully built units(FBU),and that's for brand new cars. I don't import brand new cars at the moment and as such, can't really complain about it. However, the increase in tariff for foreign used vehicles, definitely means that prices would go up. At the end of the day, we are Nigerians and it appears like we're very good at adjusting to whatever situation we find ourselves in. It initially affected sales but I think the 2015 general elections, did more harm to the business. 6. What consistently motivates you in this business? The desire and drive to succeed, plus the passion for the business. It's something I enjoy doing. I'm a very focused and business minded person and as such, everytime I fall, I find a way of bouncing back. I'm a big dreamer and a big thinker and as such, I'm always looking ahead to the next business. I love to punch way above my weight because it brings me into contact with people I hitherto wouldn't have had access to; the kind of products/services you sell/render, determines the kind of people that get

attracted to you. I love push beyond boundaries. I don't even get to sleep or eat regularly because I'm always responding to car requests on my phones, at the office, and via social media. 7. What don't you like in Nigeria's automotive business? I don't like a lot. The automotive business in Nigeria, is not really structured and as such, it's like an everything goes kind of thing. I could talk about a lot ,and we won't even leave here. There are different issues we can thrash out. No 1: Greed: it's common knowledge that as car dealers, we can't possibly have every car our clients request and as such, we need to network amongst dealer colleagues to get some of these requests. Often times, when you conclude with your colleagues, and you connect him/her with clients, they close the deals and start telling you stories. Most dealers are so desperate, dishonest and hungry and as such, they tend to make it difficult for one to trust a person. I've got lots of various kinds of experiences to share. No 2: Unseriousness: I can't count how many times I've had to wait endlessly for some dealers to bring their cars to client after we both agreed beforehand on the transaction. Client comes around and waits all day but can't see the so called car/dealer, and leaves disappointed. No 3: Lack of loyalty: people change when there is cash involved and start misbehaving. It's difficult to trust these folks. No 4: The middleman factor: there's actually nothing wrong with the middlemen helping to get client because at some point in time, we all become middlemen in the business when we don't have the car a client is requesting, in stock. However, there are some middlemen who know nothing about what it costs to land a vehicle into the country. They go all around with very unreasonable budgets and would negotiate you to the last penny, and still expect a commission from you. Some of them go about with ridiculous budgets and as such, makes the business look like it isn't favourable. There's also the greed part of middlemen. I've had a situation where I was supposed to sell my 2010 foreign used LR4 and my profit was just 300k but the middleman who brought the job, was going to make 700k. I wasn't disturbed about it because I always feel you're entitled to whatever you put on the price I give to you, so long as your client can pay. But in this case, the dude was insisting I come down on my price because he wanted to make 1 million naira on the deal. He

17 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

MN INTERVIEW

threatened to pull the plugs on the deal if I didn't accede to His request. I called His bluff off and truly, he messed up the deal. I was shocked. I've sold cars where the middlemen earned more than me, and I didn't become greedy by claiming I'm the owner of the car, and can't allow them earn more than myself... 8. Who are your business role models ? Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote is my business role model. He's investing in different key sectors of the economy, and making good money. Like Dangote, I love to have my hands in several pies so I can create multiple streams of income. I admire his business acumen. I'm hoping someday, I'd be able to achieve the feat of being Africa's youngest billionaire under $40 years of age *winks*. 9. What are your other interests apart from this business? Showbiz and entertainment, business consulting, media, etc. Let me tell you a secret. I'm actually someone who has a lot of interest anything. I draw and paint very well, I sing and rap quite well, I'm also a record producer and also direct musical videos. I also like to brainstorm on ideas and provide solutions to teething problems. I spend a lot of time thinking and creating new ideas... 10. Any expectations for 2016? Well, I intend to push the AutoLounge-By-Chronx brand to the next level by God's grace. The political situation in the country this year, hasn't allowed us to push through with certain ideas because we weren't sure what was going to happen, due to the heated

18 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

general elections. Now that that part has been sorted out, we intend to take things step by step and see how far we can go. 11. Where do you see your brand in 5 years? In the next 5 years, I honestly desire to have at least one AutoLounge-By-Chronx outlet, in every state capital of the 36 states of the federation. It's my dream that Auto-Lounge-By-Chronx is transformed into one of the leading automobile companies in Nigeria. We get a lot of requests from clients in places like Abuja and Port-Harcourt. So, once we're able to have Lagos on total lockdown, we're moving into these 2 cities and from there, we'd spread the gospel around. 12. What do you do to relax? I know for people like you, the line separating work and play is a very thing one... Unfortunately, I hardly have time to relax. I work from Monday to Saturday and Sunday is the only day in a week that I have for myself. Sometimes, I get requests from clients on Sundays too but most times I turn it down; the body needs rest. But if you're ready to make payment for a 2015 range rover or a G-wagon on Sunday, I'd hit the road straight. The rest can wait till later on. I enjoy what I do, and my work is fun to me. I hardly even have time to sleep during the week; I manage to sleep for 4/5 hrs each day and sometimes, it's even lesser than that. Like today, I had to stay up all night for this interview, and I almost slept off at a point. But when I want to relax outside my job, I like to listen to good music, surf the internet for information and read up as much as I can, online. I'm an internet

addict. I'm not an outgoing person and I get bored attending parties; I've had so much of that in the past. I'm basically the indoor type of person. 13. Got any advice for young entrepreneurs out there? First things ďŹ rst, be sure entrepreneurship is what you want. You might not earn a dime for months when you start off and if you're not patient, you'd easily quit. You need a large heart, and lots of shock absorbers to be an entrepreneur. You'd fail very well when you start(due to lack of experience);don't let it discourage you. It's part of the learning process. Also, do not expect to just hit it off straight, and start making so much money; it doesn't work that way. You must also have a strong passion for whatever kind of business you get into, and must be focussed. If you don't like what you do, and you don't have passion for it, you can't succeed in it. You'd fall and fail several times but always give it one more try; failure is a part of the life of every successful entrepreneur. From your failures, you'd learn how not to make those mistakes that has caused you to fail. You must be dogged and be ready to go all out to get what you want legally. Trust and integrity matters a lot; if you lack these, you'd go nowhere. Be honest as much as you can. More so, believe in God to make things happen for you. 14. So what is your favourite car of all time? Hmmmm. That's a tough one. I love luxury rides and I love big cars. If I had to choose, it would be between the range rover vogue and the GL450/550. I have driven both cars very well, and I love the

MN INTERVIEW

balance they give on the road. I haven't driven the G-wagon yet (I've only sold them) and as such, can't tell you much about its drive but it's also a collector's item. But anything Benz is fantastic for me. For the Land Rover, I'm only interested in the Vogue or the LR4. I don't like the new sport nor the Evoque; they look small. I love cars with big engines. The Lexus RX330,350 and 400h are also very good. They drive very smoothly and are lovely to cruise. 15. How can we contact you for business? We're at Km 19,Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, Ikeja. My fear about 2016 is the escalating tension/rivalry between the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro...If care is not taken, the earth might be pulled into another world war in just a matter of months. The United Nations and all stakeholders need to act fast and work together to prevent a further escalation which could result in total destruction and chaos! Else, we can only await the disastrous consequences. Anonymous (2015)

19 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

Nigeria's Festival of Speed. S

o the 2015 edition of Nigeria's Superbike Road Race has come and gone. Motoring Nigeria was present to cover every single bit of the event which was a grand success and of course a significant improvement compared to last year's event. It was an exhilarating weekend for all those who attended the event as everybody got their own excessive dose of adrenaline Friday 27th of November, 2015 was the date slated for arrival at Motel Bellisima in the ancient city of Benin, Edo state. On that day, Nigerians witnessed the presence of bikers on various highways as they made their way to Benin from all over the country. Saturday morning was quite unique as everyone woke up feeling all energetic and ready to race but before that, we first had to travel about 1.5 hours from Benin through BeninAsaba expressway to the race location- Urhonigbe, Edo State. On our arrival at Urhonighe, we were welcomed by the sheer serenity of the area, we knew we were in a whole different environment as the children, women and men lined up the smooth virgin asphalt welcoming us with smiles and waving at us till we got to the race venue. Riding to the venue and it was clear that the organisers had found a 32km stretch of road that was "perfect" for street race course having obtained the approval of the Government of Edo State to shut down the road for the purpose of the race. It is a 32 km stretch of smooth track like asphalt surface, with long straights where the racers easily hit above 290km/hr and sharp, slow and fast curves that test the braking and cornering ability of the racers. It was clear we were in for a racing treat.

drone performances by the drone pilot who was supposed to be using the drone to video the event, but hey, its okay because the villagers liked it and I know that because they never stopped waving at the drone. After all these, the race began, with up to 40 contestants covering the 32km route each. Male and female winners emerged in both the 600cc (capacity) and 1000cc categories. Jack Affara who won last year's race also clinched the first position in The BT Championship 1000cc Category this year covering 32km in 10 mins 28 seconds, second position went to Ahmed Alpacino who covered 32km in 10 mins 42 seconds and the third position went to Mohammed (Mo Ducati) who covered 32km in 10mins 54seconds. The female winners were Oreoluwa Ojo (15mins 23seconds), Jeminat Olumegbon (15mins 31seconds) and Kelly Jumbo (16mins 40seconds). The Above 1000cc Category winners were Argo Raak (10mins 11seconds), Ini Ralph (10mins 57seconds) and Darlinton (11mins 1second).After the race, we proceeded to the finish line at Ugbokirima where trophies were awarded to the winners. After all said and done, we again hit the highway for the ride back to Benin where some people chilled and others decided to cool off by swimming. Evening time came and that signalled the beginning of the Ultimate Bike Girl Nigeria Pageant at Hexagon Hotel, where Miss Onyinye Okereke emerged as the winner. To spice up the evening, a car raffle draw was held and was won by Miss Oreoluwa Ojo who went home with a brand new Kia Picanto. Sunday the 29th of November, 2015 was departure day and we prepared for the hard ride back to base.

This year also saw the presence of two global power brands in motorsport in attendance - RedBull and Yamaha Racing. The event started with a few practice laps for bikers who wanted to get accustomed to the beautiful curves the road had to offer. The practice laps were followed by a dance presentation which sort of snowballed into a competition (who knew bikers could dance). This was followed by the introduction of the contestants for the Ultimate Bike Girl Nigeria Pageant and occasional

I have attended some motorsport events in Nigeria and this stands as the most memorable. I say kudos to the organizers for striving to introduce genuine motorsport to Nigeria, even though there is still great room for improvement. This was serious racing! As with all races, there is the likelihood of crashes. In this year's event, there were about seven crashes. Most of the crashes happening at a famous high speed right turn curve. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries and the racers are back home and well and already planning for next years event which comes up again on the 26th of November, 2016. Going by the successes achieved at this year's event, it will be correct to say that motorsport, superbike racing, has taken off in Nigeria. IF you pump RED, like me, don't miss next year's event. 22 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

The Menace Called Micras

...Christian Maduka

S

o after being away for quite some time, I return to my place of birth, my first love, my dream land ( if it remains so after this observation) and most importantly, the place where I truly feel at home, Ibadan, Oyo state Nigeria. There's something about the city that appeals to my better senses. The serenity, the peace, the orderly pace with which traffic moves, the calmness that permeates the air when you drive around. It's like a the perfect mix between New York and Boise, Idaho (not like I've been to either, but you know ... Seen enough Hollywood to know that driving is not for the faint hearted in the former, and a relative breeze in the latter). But recently something seems to be off. This relatively drive-easy town has suddenly been overtaken by pests, and I'm not talking about the Okadas or the Keke-NAPEPs or even the Ajumose buses, no. It's the damned MICRAS! Nissan Micra to be specific. They look a whole lot like this... What is a Nissan Micra? Nissan needed a rival for the already burgeoning Toyota starlet and hence the Micra was conceived. The Micra is something of an old breed, having been in production

since 1982!, and it's actually being critically acclaimed for its reliability, excellent build? and user friendliness. I mean all these are pretty cool (throw in low fuel consumption) and you can see that this car was going to be a hit in developing countries, then the Oyo state discovered it and this supposedly glorious vehicle changed for the worse. Sigh. I was in a friend's car the other day and we stopped at a traffic light quietly chilling for it to turn green, when all of a sudden a Micra taxi kissed our ass (figuratively) Just see the driver outta his car, quite sure that's an argument going on...

You can see that this car was going to be a hit in developing countries, then the Oyo state discovered it and this supposedly glorious vehicle changed for the worse 24 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

You see, as an autophile, I'm absolutely game for the occasional car driver/ taxi driver scuffles, me thinks as a Nigerian commuter we need comic reliefs every once in a while. Else we'll just die of sadness and heartbreak prematurely. However when this supposed comic reliefs start turning to nuisances you that "it has passed becareful" (I promise you it sounds better when my mom says that phrase in my local tongue). I mean how else can you explain how a taxi driver gets involved in a fender bender, and a scratch with two different people in the same week!? Apparently it was the same Micra driver who scratched my own vehicle earlier in the week. Well my friend isn't as long suffering as myself, so he came down and hooked the driver and you know how the story goes, the "Ejo sir, e ma binus" had the day. And a quick search on Twitter brought about several complaints against these same Micra drivers. Just see the culprits...

But it got me thinking. How did it become like this? Is this a case of poverty alleviation that constitutes a different nuisance or what? I know this is Ibadan and I'm sure the Lagos readers are rolling their minds eye that it's worse in Lagos. I agree... But. How about sensitization of the drivers on our roads? Proper lessons on how to drive (really, how many attended a proper driving school) Road culture (sigh, this is just a lost cause) This nuisance can't continue. Or how will I ride my Aventador in Ibadan (yup, Gidicars has taught me that it's possible) struggling with these things on the same road??

Mercedes Benz GLE 450 Coupe

BMW X6

Mercedes Benz introduced a 'x6-killer' in the Mercedes Benz GLE which has motor enthusiasts saying 'what took them so long'.

...Christian Maduka

F

irst there was the SUV, the ubiquitous utility vehicle that roamed the various suburbs satisfying families and individuals alike. But as the saying goes "familiarity breeds contempt" and as is typically human, once something becomes popular, it loses its 'coolness' and off we go in search of the next new 'cool' thing . But the thing is, we never really got enough of the SUV to condemn it to the abyss of Car afterlife, instead innovation sought to re-introduce the SUV to us albeit in a special form, and hence the 'Crossover coupe' was born. Bringing about compromises in size and relative capacity. It was an imperfect compromise, but a compromise that works effectively! Originally a concept car , segment leader BMW brought the crossover coupe dream to life in the X6 released for sale to much scorn and skepticism (depending on whose account you're reading) of motor enthusiasts the world over in April 2008. But hey ... The X6 has grown in leap and bounds ever since (over 240,000 units have being sold since then) steadily racking in profit for the Bavaria company and has even undergone a facelift. Of course not to be outdone in the crossover gig.

26 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

This article isn't about the what took one long to get to the market, or why one has dominated the market for so long. No, this article is about comparing two luxury crossover coupes to see who wins this edition of the eternal battle between the Bimmer and the Merc. So what do we know ... BMW X6: Engine: TwinPower Turbo Inline 6 Transmission: 8-Speed Automatic w/ paddle shifters Base price- $60,795 0-60- 5.7 secs TopSpeed-127mph Power rating- 300 hp / 300 lb-ft Torque A 300-hp 3.0-liter turbo inline-six with an eight-speed automatic which comes with either rear- or all-wheel drive. An audacious 445-hp 4.4-liter turbo V-8 is optional and comes only with all-wheel drive. The standard Driving Dynamics Control system allows for five distinct driving modes and an available air suspension provides even more fine-tuning. What more can I say... The statistics speak for themselves. And if by now you still think the X6 is a flash in the pan, well think again. Because some 240,000 people would beg to differ. And you really can't blame them. BMW has a winning formula in the x6 and it looks like it's here for the long run.

Mercedes Benz GLE: Engine: Bi-Turbo V6 Transmission: 9-Speed Automatic w/ paddle shifters Estimated base price: $66,025 Estimated 0-60- 4.2 secs TopSpeed- 155mph Power rating: 362 HP / 384 lb-ft Torque Not to be outdone, the good people at Mercedes Benz have finally yielded to calls to provide is their own version of the crossover coupe. The GLE brings about a refreshing view from what we've come to expect. Officially dubbed the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe it features a 362 horsepower V6 biturbo engine that produces 384 lb-ft of torque mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The power is delivered via

Mercedes' patented 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The GLE is available with all of Mercedes-Benz safety systems including Pre-Safe braking with pedestrian detection, cross traffic assist, and their parktronic park assist viewable through an 8-inch TFT display on the console. A very serious car is hitting our roads soon and it will be unwise to ignore these statistics that point to a very serious sports crossover coupe. At long last we have a worthy competitor for the X6. How it stacks to the x6 physically still remains to be seen. But going by price, the GLE offers a little bit more (faster 0-60, higher TopSpeed etc) for a $6k plus premium. The arrival of this car no doubt will give even the staunchest of loyalist a little bit of dilemma which is what we need ..... After all variety they say, is the spice of life!

RoadKill Episode 15 Season 1 Finale. Having gone to meet and explain everything to Big Joe, he agreed to help in the plan but asked first that the plan should be laid out for him. Mba and Timi, the two who came up with the idea took some time to explain how the plan would go down to everybody. They went over and over it again, and after ending one session, someone always had questions to ask. "Okay fine. We hook up a rope to the roof from the helicopter and pull out the safe...wait please, who are those in the helicopter again?" Idris asked. Timi sighed, worn out from repeating the same thing over and over again. "Maybe I should go over it one more time. Mba says the Senate President takes his wife out every Thursday night. He takes most of his security detail with him, leaving only four soldiers behind. These soldiers usually stay in the little house attached to the side of the gate. You with me so far?" Timi looked around to see their faces. They all nodded. "Good," he said, then continued. "Okay. Mba, driving the truck, the rams the gate open and blocks the only door of the little house with the truck. Quickly following behind is Aisha on the motorbike. She sails in and throws in the knockout gas through the window into the soldiers quarters. That done, she hooks a grappling line affixed to her bike to the door, then pulls the door off its hinges. She gets down, races to the top floor and finds the safe. Now you, Idris will jump from the helicopter down to the roof, right above where Aisha is. You'll use some C4 to blow the roof open...” "Wait, wait...it's that part that's got me worried. You want me to jump from a helicopter?" Idris asked wryly. "You'll be using a grappling line too..." Timi replied, putting Idris at ease. Timi looked round again to make sure everyone was still following. After confirming that, he moved on. “After blowing the roof open, you attach your grappling hook to the safe. Find an angle or an hinge or anything. Just find a way to attach your hook to safe. Then you stand on the safe. Ikenna...” "Wait me?" Ikenna interrupted. Ikenna was Big Joe's prodigy. He worked at Big Joe's shop too. He wasn't too thrilled about being in a helicopter because he had a big phobia for heights. When he was little, he climbed a tall fence because his friends dared him to. Ikenna fell and broke both hands. His face was also badly bruised and he still had two scars from the stitches on his face. "Yes you Ikenna, I've said this before. You stay in the helicopter and you reel Idris along with the safe back in. Aisha and Mba will scramble out of there after that and Big Joe flies the helicopter clear of the area too. At the alley at Green Palms, Bridget and I will be waiting in the pickup. When you Big Joe fly the helicopter to our location, you will reel out the safe slowly and drop in the back our pickup. Bridget and I will bring the safe home, and then the contents are ours. Simple enough right?" Everyone nodded. This time, Timi was glad there was no questions. Finally everyone had finally understood.

Suddenly Big Joe's workshop started feeling unbearably hot. It was the tension everyone was experiencing. Robbing the Senate President wasn't what someone did every day. To make matters worse, they weren't robbing the man of his money which would have been easier to pull of actually, they were robbing him of probably the most safe guarded documents in his house. Documents that proved what sort of a scumbag the man really was. If they failed...if they failed, the best they could hope for was being sent to some hellhole to languish for the rest of their lives. The worst...the worst was death and that was the most probable course of action the Senate President would take. The man had no qualms about taking life. He relished it. He loved killing, especially someone who had crossed him. Mba had made sure they were aware of the dangers they were all getting themselves in. He told them they could decide not to take part in the mission, but everyone had replied they wanted to be part of history. If someone was going to do something as crazy as robbing the Senate President, they wanted to be part. **************************************************** The large mean looking Mercedes Benz truck, a 1998 6.0L turbo-diesel Unimog U1250 4x4 came speeding at an unfathomable speed. Mba headed for the gate head on, confident that the Unimog he was driving, with its super strong steel reinforced anterior, was powerful enough to bring down the daunting black gate that stood at the entrance of the Senate President's mansion. The front part of the truck pulled a container no shorter than ten feet. It tore down the black metal gate in a swift second as it impacted it. Metal scraps fell everywhere with bolts and nuts bouncing on and off the ground. The impact was so strong that even a large chunk of eight foot tall white painted wall crumbled at the instance of impact. Mba swiftly steered the truck to the right, jamming the right side of the truck against the only door of the quarters assigned to the soldiers. Aisha came speeding on a red 2012 MV Agusta Rivale 800 motorbike behind him, her dark blue helmet clamped tight to her face. The big thick black tyres spun incredibly as she made into the compound. The bike had a 125bhp motor and its tremendous curves and lines could leave you breathless. She took a gas canister from the cross bag on her back, leaned her motorcycle to the right and with her left hand, threw the canister over her head right through the window of the small quarters. The canister bounced and gave a clanking sound as it hit the tiles inside the room. The soldiers immediately ran to the door and tried to get out. But the door would not budge. Aisha smiled to herself, satisfied that she and Mba had successfully taken out all the guards on duty...except she was wrong. Two of the four soldiers that were supposed to be on guard had been at the back of the giant all white duplex and as such were not locked in the tiny quarters. The duplex was huge. It had a balcony in front with a chandelier hanging from the PVC ceiling. Down below in front of the house where six pillars arranged in an arc. The entire compound was interlocked except the parts close to the wall that served as flower beds. There were different kinds of flowers planted there. There was Barbados, Hibiscus, Sun flowers etc. 29 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

AC's hung from almost every part of the house. All windows were double hung and were all locked tight. On hearing the loud crash the two ran to the front of the house and immediately opened fire on Aisha and Mba. Aisha reacted quickly, kicking her motorbike back into action, she leaned right and left and right again, dodging the bullets of the soldiers as she drove nearer to them. When she was close enough she let go of her bike and jumped off, taking cover behind one of the many tall pillars that stood in front of the duplex. The bike hit one of the soldiers head on, knocking him out while the other one jumped out of the way. Just as the soldier who had jumped out of the way got back on his feet, Aisha got in front of him and kicked his rifle out of his hands. The soldier grabbed Aisha by the neck and threw her back with so much force that she crashed back into one of the pillars she had been hiding behind. However, before the soldier could do any further damage, Mba who had got out of his truck tackled the soldier from behind, sending them both forcefully to the ground. The soldier elbowed Mba off his back and made to stand up, but Aisha suddenly hit him with his own rifle knocking the soldier right out. Unknowingly to Aisha and Mba, things were about to get much worse as one of the soldiers trapped in the small quarters had managed to call and tell the Senate President that someone was attacking his house before being knocked out by the gas. The Senate President who at the time had not even reached his destination yet had now turned around, with a convoy; six security detail vehicles and had even called for backup. Aisha took a moment to get her breath back. "You okay?" Mba asked."I just took out two soldiers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria...best day ever-" she replied. She ran to her bike, raised it and pushed it to the front of the door. She hooked a grappling line attached to her bike to the door. Then she turned away from the door and drove forward. The motorcycle pulled the door, tearing it totally off the door post. "-And it just keeps getting better..." Aisha finished. Mba stayed out on lookout as Aisha ran upstairs to where the safe was. She reached the top floor, and speaking through her comlink, alerted Idris that she had found the safe. Downstairs, one of the soldiers who Aisha had knocked out started to come about. Mba picked the rifle Aisha had earlier used to knock him out to hit him again, sending him back to sleep. Seconds later, Aisha started to hear noise the fan blades of a helicopter getting louder and louder. Idris then replied that they were around. Big Joe steadied the helicopter in the sky while allowing Ikenna and Idris to unfasten the grappling line that would be used. Idris held tightly to the rope as Ikenna began to reel him down slowly. Gusts of air blew into Idris' face as he was let down from the helicopter to the big convoluted green roof on the Senate President's residence. He walked over to the right spot under which Aisha was, moving slowly so as not to slip. He planted a C4 above where Aisha had told him the safe was then moved a reasonable distance away and telling Aisha to do the same before detonating the charge. A enormous hole blew open in the roof. He attached the hooked part of the grappling line to the safe and signalled to Peter to start reeling him up again. Just then, Mba spoke to Aisha in his com link. “We have a problem. Better get downstairs at once, I can hear Police Sirens in the distance. They know we are here. Aisha ran back downstairs

and mounted her bike just as Mba opened the back of his truck, revealing his own bike. "This truck wouldn't make for a good getaway vehicle," he smiled. Aisha agreed. She waited for Mba to mount his own bike, then both of them sped out of the compound. It was a one way street so they inevitably crossed paths with the incoming police but sped past them so fast that they confused the police squad cars. Two of the squad cars in front tried to make a U-turn to follow the two bikers but crashed into the cars behind them. The last two squad cars however successfully navigated a reverse and started to chase Aisha and Mba. The remaining police cars made it into the compound where Idris was dangling in the air with a safe from a helicopter. The police instantly opened fire on Idris who screamed into his com link, "Get me out of here!" Big Joe sent the helicopter into a sideways manoeuvre. Ikenna increased the pace at which he was reeling Idris up, but just as Idris hand touched the open door of the helicopter, a police bullet hit the rope holding the safe, snapping it immediately. Idris' super quick reflexes allowed him to grab unto the safe, about the size of a square travelling box, with his left hand while he held unto the helicopter with his right. Ikenna rushed to help him into the helicopter before another bullet hit Idris himself. As Idris made safely into the helicopter, "Remind me to never ever agree to doing that again," he blurted out. The helicopter continued on its way. Meanwhile things were getting much harder for Aisha and Mba who now had an entire fleet of police cars chasing after them. Aisha kept looking behind her every five seconds to make sure no police car was getting too close to them. "We need a tiny road where we can lose them," she told Mba. "Yeah, there's a turning up ahead." The two of them further charged up their speeds, blasting through the night time with nothing but their bike headlamps and the moon lighting the way. Once at the turning, they cut to the right so suddenly that three of the squad cars behind them simply shot past the turning, and the ones which managed to stop just ended up compressing into one another like sardines in a can. However, before either Mba or Aisha could breathe a sigh of relief, they found that four police bikes were on their tails again. "This is going to be a long night," Aisha murmured. The helicopter made it to the alley at Green Palms and Ikenna and Idris quickly but carefully lowered the safe now reattached to the remaining length of the line into the back of Timi's pickup truck. Bridget got out of the passenger seat and climbed into the back of the pickup truck herself to unhook the safe and let Ikenna and Idris reel in the grappling line again. She watched the rope disappear back into the helicopter then turned to face the safe. She had held a portable scanner like device to the safe and the device immediately started beeping."What's that?" Timi asked as he heard the rapid beeping. "Bad news Timi," Bridget replied. "The safe's got a tracker inside it. We can't take the safe home else the Senate President would be able to find us easily. We need to improvise and crack the safe right here, right now so I can destroy the tracker. All you need to do is keep this car still." That was not to be as the Senate President along with his convoy who had been tracing the signal of the tracker all this while blasted into the alley way. Timi quickly kicked the engine into start and darted out of the alley before he could be

cornered in by the Senate President's men. This shook both Bridget and the safe violently at the back of the pickup. Bridget held unto to something as Timi threw the car right and left to unhinge the cars that had started to chase him. It seemed nothing was going smoothly according to plan that night. Aisha saw someone park his car up front and calculated that the man was about to open his door. She sped dangerously close to car and just as she dashed past it, the man indeed opened his door causing one of the police bikes chasing her to crash into the door. Of the three remaining police bikes, two were hot on Mba's tail while the last one focused squarely on getting Aisha. Mba sped off the road into the pedestrian and darted past one of the numerous lamp posts on the pedestrian. The two police bikes chasing him followed. Mba started weaving around the many lamp posts and the police bikes copied him. One soon made a mistake and crashed right into a lamp post knocking him off his bike. Now Mba and Aisha had one police bike each chasing them. Timi kept slithering across the road like a snake, refusing to stay in one lane. He kept darting to and fro from lane to lane making it difficult for his pursuers to keep up. But all that effort was useless as long as the signal coming from the safe wasn't shut down. Bridget got to work. Luckily, she had brought her equipment with her and they were right there at the back of the truck. She picked up one of the devices she needed but it fell from her hand as Timi made a sudden left turn. One of the cars chasing them crashed into the side of a building attempting to make the turn too. Bridget picked up the device again and got to work. Just then, their pursuers started firing at them, unloading the full fury of AK 47 rifles at them. Bridget ducked and covered her head with her arms. This was going to be extremely difficult. Timi realised there were at least two people in every car chasing them: one driving, the other seated in the passenger seat. It was the ones in the passenger seat that were firing at Timi and Bridget. They needed help and they needed help now. Timi spoke into his com link, begging anyone of his teammates to come to their aid. Aisha heard the plea for help and was determined to answer. She sped up, enticing a similar action from the cop chasing her. She suddenly whirled round, making a complete U-turn and faced the incoming police officer. The police officer was so shocked. He was afraid whether Aisha had a gun. He pushed his brakes and unexpectedly lost control of his bike. He was thrown halfway across the street as the bike tumbled into the ground. Aisha got off her bike, ran to the police officer and took his pistol. Then she made back to her bike and headed to go help Timi. As Timi darted into another main street, Aisha saw his pickup up ahead and simultaneously sped up a ramp. She flew into the air, shooting the front tyres of the car nearest in pursuit to Timi making it skid out of control, then jumped off her bike and threw herself in such a way that she landed at the back of Timi's pick up. air, shooting the front tyres of the car nearest in pursuit to Timi making it skid out of control, then jumped off her bike and threw herself in such a way that she landed at the back of Timi's pick up. The remaining drivers of Senate President Micheal Aghedo's team opened their mouths in awe at what they had just seen. With the pickup still under an onslaught of gun fire, Aisha was wise to keep her head down just like Bridget. Aisha waited patiently for when she would get to take out the tyres of their pursuers...and she would soon get her chance. Idris head Timi's call for help too and informed Big Joe to fly over to Timi's location. "What do you intend to do?" Big Joe asked him. Idris started reeling out the grappling line. "Using this rope, I'm going to jump down atop one of those cars," Idris replied as he opened the helicopter's door and stood by the edge, grappling line in hand."Idris that's crazy," Big Joe stated. “I know, and that's why I'm doing it," Idris replied and leapt out of the helicopter, hanging on tight to the rope. Part of the rope had been cut so it wasn't long enough Idris to drop safely atop one of the vehicles. Instead, Idris had to let go at quite a height and jump one of the cars on the road. He missed. He had jumped on a ordinary civilian vehicle and not on one of the Senate President's Chevrolet convoy. However, Idris hung tight to the TOYOTA Corolla 2012 he had jumped on as the driver swirled. Idris timed his jump perfectly this time, leaping off the roof of the TOYOTA unto the back of the black Chevrolet Cruze that was one of the cars in the Senate President's convoy. As Idris landed on the Cruze, his legs slipped off the car to the ground and he had to cling even tighter to the back of the Cruze as it dragged him on. Idris mustered all the strength he could and jumped back unto the Cruze. His shoes had been almost totally worn off by friction in the little time he had been dragged. The Senate President henchman in the passenger seat opened his door and turned to fire at Idris. However, he lost balance and fell to the road and was hit by another car that belonged to the Senate President's convoy. Idris crawled to the passenger door, got in and two seconds later the driver was sent crashing out of the car. Idris got into the driver's seat and began ramming other cars that were chasing Timi. This was the opportunity Aisha had been awaiting. She raised her head and took aim at the Senate President's cars, firing their tyres one after the other and sending them all on collision courses. Idris continued his own attack at them, ramming into the other Chevrolets and sending them off the road. Bridget finally got some leeway to start working on the safe. She soon had it open and immediately destroyed the tracker once she found it. Behind her, there were only two vehicles left in pursuit. One of them was the Chevrolet Suburban the Senate President himself was in. Timi engaged full evasive manoeuvres darting into a dark alley road and coming out at the other end so fast not even Idris was able to follow. Idris took another way and vanished also. The Senate President, upon discovering that he had completely lost Timi and his teammate began to scream at his henchmen. He started throwing a tantrum ordering everyone from the police to his soldiers to anyone who would listen to smoke Timi and team of miscreants out. 31 CARVOLUTION / FEBRUARY 2016

But there was really nothing the police nor anyone for that matter could do. The Storm Chasers were gone... ***************************************************** Everyone soon arrived at Big Joe's shop. Mba arrived before everyone else. He didn't encounter any additional problems after taking out the last police officer that was chasing after him. Big Joe and Ikenna were the next. Then Timi, carrying

the safe, Bridget and Aisha came next. The last to arrive was Idris. They celebrated that night, knowing they had pulled off the craziest thing either of them could think of. Now they had the proof they need. They were finally going to take down the Senate President. They were going to end his tyrannical reign. I don't need to give you reasons why you need to go read the previous episodes now do I?

REAL WAYS TO SAVE FUEL

...Minkail Adesoji

reak up with your partner if he or she is fat. If you have fat friends, make sure you are going out in their car not the other way around. With the increase in price of PMS, people have been wondering how to save fuel. Nigerians always see opportunity in every situation which means some people started importing stuff they say will reduce the rate at which you petrol burn by 25%. Petrol cannot be diesel. So here I am giving you tips on how to reduce your fuel consumption. If you are driving a Corolla, you really don't have to worry except you are not ready to use a car. If you drive cars like Infinity FX45, Benz S550 etc this post is not for you. You are meant to spend alot on fuel.

B

10. Avoid excessive idling. If you idle your car for more than a minute, it will save gas to turn off the engine. 11. Ignite the engine. Wait for the rev cursor to return to 1. Then move slowly. Your car will warm up b4 you get to the main road or highway. NB: New cars don't need to be warmed up. 12. The Air conditioner consumes fuel. Use it only when its necessary. In the afternoon, in traffic or when it pours. 13. Keep track of your fuel economy so you can quickly identify when your vehicle is in need of a tune-up or other service.

So many Tips but I will shortlist a little that you can follow. 1. Drive at the speed limit. This is the single most effective solution to 14. Pretend that there is a raw egg between your foot and the increasing efficiency. The most fuel-efficient speed may be the point accelerator pedal in your vehicle. You don't want to break the egg at which your vehicle shifts to high gear. For most vehicles, this is and get the mess on your floor boards so you'll be less inclined to somewhere around 80mph. mash down the throttle pedal. The idea is to encourage gentle accelerations and avoid flooring or lead footing your vehicle. 2. Try to avoid traffic on busy days or times when it is raining, windy or barometric pressure is high. Rain, headwind and high barometric 5. When you see a red light in the distance, start to slow down pressure create extra air drag that uses more fuel to create and moderately well before, and wait for it to turn green so you can maintain forward motion (a tailwind helps). stroll on through, hopefully maintaining quite a bit of speed 3. Get rid of any unnecessary weight in your car or truck like golf clubs 16. One great way to save fuel is to do minimal braking for turns. or unnecessary tools, materials and YOUR FAT GF,. Lowering the When coming up to a turn or bend, threshold brake at the limit of tailgate on a pickup truck actually reduces your gas mileage by adhesion and slowly release the brakes as your turn the wheel. reducing drag. Once your come out of the turn you will still be near the speed limit. 4. Avoid wasting fuel from pressing the gas to regain the speed lost from braking when following closely (tailgating) which forces you to 17. Don't top off! correct your following distance by applying your brakes, slowing Never fill past the auto-stop on the pump – anything above that forward motion. can spill and can be negated by emissions systems! Either way, topped-off fuel is wasted! 5. Every time you punch the gas to quickly accelerate after stopping you are burning extra fuel and increasing tire wear. 18. When you arrive home, take the time to reverse park into your garage/parking lot. Do this while the engine is already up to 6. It increases fuel consumption when you allow the vehicle speed temperature instead of spending time in the morning reversing to drift lower and then accelerate back up than it does to maintain a and manoeuvring the car out while the engine is cold and steady position on the accelerator. consuming more fuel. 7. Change your air filter. A dirty air filter will rob the engine of power and efficiency. It will use more gas than a clean filter. 8. Keep the tires inflated to the proper pressure to increase your travelling distance on a tank of gas. Keep a tire gauge handy and check the pressure. Tires naturally lose air over a period of time. 9. Service your car at manufacturers recommended intervals. Tokunbo or New. Changing spark plugs and co when their performance begins to drop.

19. Know Your Route I use a simple GPS that I bought for only $99. Whenever I am unfamiliar with the route, I plug in the address to avoid getting lost and wasting miles. It also works great for finding food and fuel stops along the route of your trip. 20. Most effective way is to sell your car. We will help you do that at Minkail Autos Ltd.`
