Welcome to the 2020 ASO Learning Program
Vincent Ciccarello Managing Director
Rob Stobbe CEO, SA Power Networks
The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is an enthusiastic ambassador for music education in South Australian schools. We believe that every child deserves access to quality musical experiences and that these important interactions can have a lasting impact.
The solutions we’re going to require to navigate the future of business are going to be founded in creativity. Learning a musical instrument and the benefits of music education instill these creative problem solving skills at all levels and stages of development. SA Power Networks believes in the transformative power of music and are proud to continue our partnership with the ASO’s incredible Learning Program.
Our 2020 Learning Program reflects this with its increase in school incursions including Orchestra Fantastica!, Little Maestros, Herman and Rosie and a brand new commission based on Alison Lester’s book Are we there yet? All of these programs provide support to teachers through professional development workshops to ensure the greatest impact in the classroom and at the performances. We’re thrilled to begin the year with a symposium in collaboration with Musica Viva and the Australian Society for Music Education (ASME) which will see renowned music specialist Dr Anita Collins in Adelaide to deliver new research on music as the key to language and reading. We are furthermore delighted to announce that another leading light in international practices in music education, Paul Rissmann, solidifies his commitment to the ASO Learning Program by becoming our first ever Creative Partner. This partnership builds on Paul’s relationship with the ASO (a relationship we are most proud of) which in 2020 will be entering its seventh year. Paul will again lead our 2020 Festival of Learning, and embark on another exciting Creative Project with students in senior secondary school at the end of the year. We encourage you to explore all that our Learning Program has to offer, and trust that you’ll find something suitable for both you and your students in 2020. We look forward to welcoming you, and together ensuring we create a space for music.
Access to music education is crucial, and the breadth of activity in 2020 provides a number of gateways to switch on students to music. From school excursions through to the Festival of Learning and the incredible Big Rehearsals where participants learn through side-by-side participation with ASO musicians, students are supported at all stages of their musical and creative development. The inspiring opportunities that the ASO continues to provide to our community give us great faith in the future of our state, and help ensure that the cultural health of our city and its future generations stays alive and well.
The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra acknowledges that the land we make music on is the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We pay respect to Elders past and present and recognize and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that this is of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today.

Dr Anita Collins
Music: The Keys to Language and Reading In our fourth annual symposium co-presented by Musica Viva, ASME and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, we are delighted to welcome back keynote speaker Dr Anita Collins, internationally recognised educator, researcher and writer in the field of brain development and music learning. Recent neuroscientific research has revealed the incredible relationship between music and language learning. Music and language processing share multiple neural networks in the young child’s brain and indeed music is our brain’s first language. This same research has examined the powerful and effective use of music learning to improve language acquisition through to reading fluently. Music is particularly successful in improving neural connectivity and may support the literacy levels of delayed readers, children with dyslexia and children whose reading is poor due to attention issues such as ADHD. Come along to this symposium to learn more about the music and language connection and put into practice the effective strategies based on research findings.
Dr Anita Collins Dr Anita Collins is an award-winning educator, researcher and writer in the field of brain development and music learning. Anita is best known for her role as on-screen expert and campaign lead for the Don’t Stop the Music documentary that aired on the ABC in late 2018. She is internationally recognized for her unique work in translating the scientific research of neuroscientists and psychologists to the everyday parent, teacher and student. Over the last two years Anita has interviewed close to 100 researchers in labs across the US, Canada, Europe and Australia so she can share the most up to date research with educators. Increasingly Anita is being invited to provide expert opinion on education, creativity, strategic direction and innovation.
