WELCOME

Vincent Ciccarello Managing Director

“Music is important for the following reasons: it is abstract, it doesn’t mean anything outside itself. Music does not describe. Music does not narrate. Music does not tell stories. Music evokes. Music suggests, music implies, and music opens up the mind of a child in an extraordinary way. This abstraction about what music is offers a child the chance to move into a really special way of thinking.” Richard Gill AO Acclaimed Australian conductor and passionate advocate for music education, the late Richard Gill worked tirelessly to promote the benefits of music for all ages. We at the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra firmly believe in Richard’s message; it’s a belief that underpins our commitment to present concerts for families and the wider community. In 2019 we again present a wide range of concerts and musical activities for all ages. Whether you’re a parent of pre-schoolers, or a community musician keen to rehearse while sitting next to the professional musicians of the ASO, you’ll find this program has lots to offer. We are particularly proud to commission and present new work and in 2019, after the extraordinary success of What do you do with an idea? we present another World Premiere and several South Australian premieres. Space Race, based on the new book by celebrated SA author Phil Cummings, launches to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing. We’re also delighted to bring you Who needs a conductor anyway?, as part of the DreamBIG Festival in May, and Dreams of Air and Flight during the ASO’s own Festival of Learning in August. The ASO continues to redefine what it means to be a symphony orchestra in the 21st Century. Please join us in this wonderful musical journey.

Who Needs a Conductor, Anyway? In this South Australian premiere, the mysteries of the conductor are unveiled in this beautiful and funny foray into classical music starring world-class pianist Simon Tedeschi and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. We’ve got the orchestra and the pianist: what happens if there’s no conductor? Why can’t everyone just play how they like? (And seriously, how hard can conducting be, anyway?). Celebrated Australian pianist Simon Tedeschi actually has no idea, but with the musicians of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and some of the most famous concertos of all time, he’ll put these and other questions to the test. A captivating concert for curious minds and ears.
