Module One and Two Revision

01__SPIRAL Natural pattern: Red cabbage

Plasticine Model: Spiralling suspended beehivelike surface.

Analytical Drawing: Fibonacci Spiral Paper model: Spiral extrusion Triangle geometrical shape

Interface: Spirals around the arm

02__OVERLAPPING Digitization of Surface: Simplification of the initial module one surface Creating the double layer surfaces and applying pattern concepts (concaving, spiraling). Panelling: Overlapping triangles (Custom 3D Panels)

Surface Remodelling

LOOP

+ EASIER TO PANEL No weird angled or squished surface that messed up the panelling. +MORE REALISTIC The end of the handle is reachable and also made the making process easier.

REASON FOR CHANGE The initial inner layer was too complicated and made the panelling harder to make (especially at the edge because the surface is too abstract).

My initial analytical drawing of the red cabbage goes with a loop Fibonacci spiral Inspiration surface Klein bottle

Panelling Adjustments

Simplication of the initial.

01 X - 12 Y-7 Offset border faces with holes in all faces. Easier to unroll, but does not show the curvature of the surface.

The initial one did not have a backface. Later on in the actual making process, this pattern will make it difficult to stack the panel layers.

02 X - 12 Y - 18 Offset border faces but the front faces of the triangles does not have holes. More complex panels

The new pattern has a backface which allows stacking in panelling layers.

ERRORS Overlapping panels in curved surfaces and joints. - TOP (curved) - JOINT between handle and main -BOTTOM (curved)

Panelling Stitches Basic triangular panels are made manually (cyan shaded) to stitch the irregular panells and to avoid overlapping. BOTTOM FIX Rearranging the bottom layer to stick the point of the pyramid with the upper layer; not freely released.

PROTOTYPE ONE ERRORS

01 TOP PYRAMID

To make it easier to unroll, I deleted several faces. Turns out many of the faces I deleted are essencial parts of the model; providing a base for the layers to be stacked.

03 TOP: CURVED SURFACE

SOLUTION Add the top faces and separate the unroll pieces so that it can be unrolled.

SOLUTION: Panels simplification (attaching the point of the pyramid into the upper layer instead of overlapping).

02 BOTTOM: OVERLAPPING

Because this is the panels before being modified into a simpler one (refer to panelling stiches to see the fixed bottom part).

One of the errors when panelling a curved surface, it got difficult when making them on stiff paper.

04 UNROLLING TYPE

Because the handle has a centered pattern on its 2D panel, I cannot unrolled it vertically because paper cannot create a peak. Diagonally, it is also impossible to unroll it because of the surface geometry.

05 TABS

Too small and not uniformed for each strips.

06 ODD SCORE LINES

Needs panelling simplification; the lines are impossible o fold.

07 FOLDING INSIDE OUT

Theoritically, the score lines should be dashed. But, I don’t like how the dashed lines can be seen when the lights are installed.

Horizontally unrolled is the successfull one

PROTOTYPE LIGHTING EFFECTS

02

03

Placing the lights on the outer layer ; in the sides of the panel

Placing the lights on the inner layer.

Dashed lines are transparent when installed with lights.

EVALUATION The lights are focused only on the parts which are installed. The lights are not spread evenly and it does not create my desired lighting effect.

EVALUATION The lights were nicely spread across all panels. It also created the soft glow from the bottom in each panel.

EVALUATION Even though my model has to be fold inside out, I prefer to use score lines instead of dash because the lighting effect it produces is not appealing.

LIGHTING EFFECTS

My lantern has achieved both diffused and filtered lighting effects, because the LED Lights are placed on the inner skin, thus creating a filtered effect from the 2D panel and 3D panel of the external skin. The diffused lighting effect comes from the closed triangular panel (see picture above). It creates a soft glow at the bottom of each panel which is my desired lighting effect from my previous precedent.

LANTERN INTERFACE Held the lantern from the handle like a cup, and held the bottom part with the other hand.
