HOUND AND HORSE

FREE JULY 2017

Hello everyone, Winter is heating up with July Fever upon us and this year it promises to be a Red Hot race. Synonymous with fashion, not only does every young fashion designer aspire to have their creations spotted, this is a race many jockeys dream of winning. We take a peek inside the life of two apprentices from the world renowned South African Jockey Academy and interview Diego de Gouveia and Serino Moodley both of whom are getting into their stride. KZN Dressage Champs incorporating the Young Horse Final, takes place early in the month, with all the top riders from the region taking part. We wish them all Good Luck and hope their scores are high. Take a look at our Q and A with Ros Hill, a National Panel B Judge, and gain an insight as to what the judge is looking for. We have started a new section listing Stable Yards, Riding Schools and Instructors, and with the winter school holidays about to start, you may want to take a look and see what these centres have to offer. The Hound section is growing and we now have The Dog Guru, our Canine Myth Buster, who is at hand to answer those difficult doggy questions. Wrap up warm for winter everyone! Top Tips for a Fabulous day at the Durban July The top tips in the Hound and Horse’s experience on how to survive the Durban July: 1. Uber is a necessity. No one should be drinking and driving, but besides that, you save yourself a bit of a walk. 2. Secure your spot. Find the party that’s best for you and ensure that your entrance ticket to the course is included in the package. 3. If you’re wearing high heels, take a second pair or keep off the grass. You may also want to sneak a pair of dancing flats into your handbag. 4. Know the theme! To avoid wearing an ensemble that will render you a fashion pariah. It’s all about the look! PS: Don’t leave home without your fascinator. 5. Never clash colours with your July partner. Co-ordination is important! 6. If you consider your outfit exceptional, head for the Race Day Fashion Competition that takes place on the race track in front of the grand stand at 09H45 sharp. You can wear your own entry whether you have race horse legs or not. 7. Warmth is key - after 3pm. 8. Champers is the top tipple of the day. 9. If you’re going to have a flutter, know the form. 10. Don’t forget to ask your farrier for a burning red hot tip! 11. It’s important know the difference between a Trifecta, Quartet, Double and Swinger. 12. To avoid disappointment don’t misplace the winning ticket! 2

Turn & Burn Results

The last weekend in June was host to the popular Turn and Burn, Bike versus Horse event in Lions River. Hound & Horse were there, intrigued to see how horse and bike competed against each other. Western Mounted Games Riders were put to the test against the horse power of two wheeled machines, not something you see every day. The horses were the first to go and set the pace. Tight turns and fast paces were essential and each horse was timed against the clock. There were 5 events in all. Speed ball, Big T, Barrel racing, Quad and the exciting Single stake. The horses set good times for the motor bikes to race against. The horses were put away safely and then the bikes had their turn in the arena against the clock. The horses are able to turn much quicker than the bikes which evens up the times for the bike power on the straight and makes it more difficult than one would think to beat the four-legged beast! Congratulations to Steve Baker on taking the overall win, on his bike.

There was a friendly, family atmosphere, it is great spectator sport, there were cold beers and delicious food. It was everything needed for a super day out in the countryside. We will most definitely be back!

Learning the Art of Crossing the Line.

Picture: Claire Wager

The progression from apprentice to fully fledged Jockey is a rite of passage. There are constant tests of skill, personality and self belief that line the pathway. Diego de Gouveia and Serino Moodley are two apprentices at the South African Jockey Academy in Summerveld who have embarked on a career of life on the turf. They gave an insight into their journey so far. Two very different characters with the same goal. Diego is quick to answer, competitive and with a sharp wit while Serino comes across as more laid back, but both are equally focused on their goal of becoming successful jockeys. Serino had competed in Show Jumping growing up, whereas Diego’s experience was limited to the odd gallop along the 18th fairway of a golf course on a berg pony. Apprentices are taught horsemanship from scratch. In their first year they learn everything from tacking up to feeding and carry out daily stable duties. Their riding education begins immediately. It begins on the lunge to master the basics. Once this is accomplished they progress to riding the academy horses. These are old

campaigners with a few tricks up their sleeves, some pull, others duck out, but all provide unique tests that prepare the apprentices for their next step. Riding work. They both agreed that, “When you first start out riding work, you get your white cap! That means danger, a warning to others that you are new and inexperienced, stay away, look out!”. The trainers put them up on the older experienced horses for them to get a feel, “you may be lucky if you can get 5 rides a day, however once the trainers get to know you and you start riding more horses you are awarded a Blue Cap. This means you can ride the gallops and go to the stalls. You can end up riding twenty -five or more horses per morning”. A 4am start is the norm as life at the academy crams in work riding and school. The riding masters, all gimlet eyed ex-jockeys, assess and analyse their performance daily. They make the decision as to when an apprentice is ready to race. This is the day they sign their papers and gain their apprentice racing license. This

does

not

mean 6

they

are

automatically given rides. Now begins the task of actually securing a race ride, “Once the license is issued, you go beg for rides, with big sorry eyes to all the people that you are riding for. As an appy you try to ride for every single trainer that you can, you try your best , you check out the noms and go knocking on doors, you have to compete for rides with the experienced jocks.” They both agree that the build up to the first race is hectic and it all passes in a blur. “The starting stalls are never easy, you have a plan and your instructions, but it doesn’t always go that way, you have to have a plan B and a plan C, you have to put yourself out there or else you will never get across the line.” It is the first win that stands out. For Diego, “The trainer said, don’t jump slow, hold its head up, be patient and I will see you in the winners box, I said OK, jumped out and the next minute I was crossing the line”, for Serino it was a little different, “I sat at the back of the field and just got up on the line, but is the one race you never forget”. 8 Hot Tips for the Dressage Arena by well known rider, Mariska Botha

1. Do a fantastic warm-up. Allow sufficient time before your test to do a really good warm-up. 2. Take your time after the bell rings. When the judge rings the bell, don’t get flustered. You have 45 seconds from the sound of the bell to entering the arena. 3. Show a super centerline. The centerline is your first chance and last chance to make an impression. 4. Practice your salute. Ensure your horse is OK with a halt followed by one hand off the reins. 5. Ride accurately. Make sure you work out how big your circles and any other shapes you’re asked to show are. 6. What if it all goes wrong? The part of the test that’s gone wrong is done with, you’re not going to be able to fix it. Keep going and show the judge you can do better. 7. Know your test! Even if you have a caller make sure you’re familiar with your test. 8. HAVE FUN!!! We ride for many reasons but one of them should be for enjoyment! 7

Sitting at A with Ros Hill: Being a Dressage Judge takes a sound depth of knowledge, a keen eye for detail and quick decision making. With this in mind Hound and Horse sat at A with National B panel judge Ros Hill to find out if this is indeed the case. Q: If you were asked to describe dressage in a few sentences what would you say? A: It is seeing the happy harmony between rider and horse while they perform their athletic dances. Q: What would you say is your responsibility as a judge? A: To record a fair, unbiased and knowledgeable record of what is produced by the horse and rider and to maintain a standard throughout. We need to not only note the faults and errors but to recognise the quality and good points and remark on them. We all thrive in a positive environment, horses too, encouragement is hugely important. Q: Do you prefer one breed over another for dressage? A: It’s hard to resist the graceful and elastic modern Warmblood. Power and strength is impressive but grace and elegance definitely appeals to me Q: What qualities do you look for in a horse? A: A willing, relaxed attitude, pleasing rhythm and elastic paces. Q: What makes a dressage test stand out for you? A: A test where a horse shows the above qualities with a rider who sits calmly and elegantly while producing a flowing test with flair. Q: What do you feel is the most difficult movement to judge? A:

The

hardest

movements

to

Picture: Ros Hill

judge are those that happen in quick succession. The passage/ piaffe/passage movements and the transitions between them take place so fast. When they’re not really well executed, a rapid assessment, mark and comment must be given, at the same time as watching and assessing the next transitions. Difficult but not impossible. Q: What test riding advice would you give to riders who are starting out in Dressage? A: Get a knowledgeable trainer who is trained, qualified and above all empathetic. To improve you need eyes on the ground helping you. Watch other riders and horses, watch their lessons. It’s a beneficial way to learn. Above all, learn what’s required. Know the dimensions of a 20m circle, learn to ride accurately to the markers. Don’t throw away marks on something as simple as forgetting to salute the judge! Q: What is the greatest reward for dressage judging? A: Oh the horses! There are few better ways of spending your time than outdoors watching these beautiful creatures listening to and harmonising with their riders. Ok, so the rainy and cold days can be a trial and not all horses and riders are in harmony, but 8

even then there’s reward in passing on knowledge where it’s needed and recognising and affirming the good riding and training of those who’ve worked really hard to achieve this. Q: And so Ros, what is there that people don’t know about you ? A: I’m sure there are many who know that Andrew is a professional cyclist and a successful one too! This is probably because in between classes at shows on the weekends, I’m forever catching up on his progress in his races. He shares my passion for riding, only his steed has wheels while mine has four legs! My other son, David, was a top sportsman as well, achieving provincial and national honours in hockey and cricket but his professional career and family commitments don’t allow for serious sport nowadays. And my favourite pastime, other than riding my horse, is to be outdoors in the bush or in the mountains, watching birds and nature. Drinking a white wine as the sun goes down and the jackals call. Nothing can beat that for me, and when I can share this with my friends and family, that just makes life perfect.

Dear Ginny, To whip or not to whip? That is my question. Yours, Perplexed from Pietermaritzburg Dear Perplexed, The long, the short, the when to, and the when to withhold, with regards to the whip, are all questions that have kept many equestrians awake till late into night. Know the rules. This is of utmost importance. Each discipline has a specific rule set for the type of whip that is permissible. A quick session on the couch with the rule book will clarify what you can and cannot carry. Adhere to the rules as not only will you face a public elimination by the judge but you will also have to endure the sniggers and scorn of your fellow equestrians. Imagine what would be said if you carried a Quirt while Show Jumping. Know what is appropriate. This goes without saying, excessive use of the whip is never acceptable, no matter what the circumstance. You will face suspension and a fine for such behaviour. Chasing fellow competitors around the 3*Eventing Riders briefing with a Lunge whip, could draw frowns, as would cracking your Australian stock whip in the Dressage warm up arena. This may result in elimination if not eviction from the competition. Know how. No whip should be used overhand. No rider may carry two whips in competition. No whip may be used after elimination. In fact use of the whip should be kept to the absolute minimum, spare the rod and ruin the child does not hold true when training horses, less is more in this game. The Dressage whip should only ever be used with a light flick of the wrist, like a gentle tickle from a feather duster.

PS:

Lastly Darling, remember the whip is an artificial aid and using the whip in other circumstances is entirely at your own discretion. #justsaying Yours Ever

HOUNDS Canine Myth Buster: Puppies & Social Learning : Dealing with Biting Behaviour Puppies MOUTH – those needle-like teeth can rip and tear and cause a lot of painful nips. Children especially battle with puppies being too mouthy, and new puppy parents often have bleeding arms for weeks. Dogs and puppies have amazingly precise control of their powerful jaws and are able to bite hard, or practice bite inhibition or just ‘snap and miss’ with ease. Teaching your puppy to have great bite inhibition is essential. Puppies will often teach each other during play, just what “too hard” is, by yelping and ending the game. Mommy dogs will monitor play and end any games that get too rough. Teaching them the same rules for human interaction is easy! Games with your pup will be much more rewarding, once the sharp teeth are no longer weapons of mass destruction! Firstly, your puppy does not want to hurt you, he is not using you to teethe, and he is unaware that you do not have hair like he does. When playing with and teaching young pups, always be kind and gentle. Do NOT smack your puppy for biting you, your quick reactions may encourage further biting as he assumes it is play time, or he may turn his play into a real bite –so you would be teaching your pup to bite, or simply make him afraid of you, which will affect your long term relationship.

Use exaggerated body language, “yelp” loudly by saying OUCH! End the game right there. Stand up, walk away, reward your puppy for stopping biting you with a treat, toy or verbal praise (touching in a pat may instigate further nipping). Redirect mouthing humans, by teaching him to rather hold onto a rope toy or suitable play thing. Use words like HOLD and FETCH while he is playing to start teaching a fun retrieve as well. Teach all members of the household to engage in games where biting is NOT allowed (So, no rough and tumble “wrestling matches”), rather use toys for your puppy to bite and chew! **Adult dogs with excessive mouthing behaviour, can also be redirected in the same way, but it is prudent to consider hiring a professional behaviourist to assist in most cases****
