BUZZARD POINT Summary • Project scope calls for the development of a master plan for Buzzard Point, a currently-underused waterfront district in Washington, DC near the Nationals Stadium. The design solution creates a vibrant new district that celebrates the feeling of discovery and community. This is done by deviation from the standard street grid with curved streets to impart an experience of curiosity and exploration. It also creates a new landmark within a new neighborhood that encourages safe walking, organic interactions, and cultural activity.

Location • Located along the Anacostia River, near its juncture with the Potomac River • Framed by Fort McNair along its western edge and the Nationals Stadium directly to its northeast corner. • Strong relationship to the Capitol by way of South Capitol Street’s terminus before the South Capitol Street Bridge.

GREENING JEFFERSON AVENUE Summary • As part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Greening America’s Capitals program under the Smart Growth initiative, capital cities apply with proposals to improve green infrastructure for particular areas within the city with the aid of design firms. Jefferson Avenue, a major road in Richmond, Virginia, is a vibrant and growing community of environmentallyconscious people; the city of Richmond requested for assistance in improving the avenue’s friendliness for pedestrian and bicyclists alike, as well as improving the area’s overall green infrastructure for stormwater management (to mitigate flooding) and increased public green spaces.

Location • The study area along Jefferson Avenue between 21st and 25th Streets is links two historic neighborhoods in Richmond: Church Hill and Union Hill, and is a significant transportation corridor into Richmond’s growing downtown area.
