the real arctic for real travellers “I took the road less travelled by, and that has made all the difference
go where few have gone before In a world crowded by people and cars, concrete and ever increasing trivial matters, there is one company that offers an experience that transcends mere travel - a company that offers you a chance to immerse yourself in the last great wilderness – to experience up close the world above the Arctic Circle. That company is Arctic Kingdom. Fiercely dedicated to creating authentic and awe-inspiring trips to the high Arctic, we are, in fact, the only company in the world to offer such land-based travel experiences and special interest trips for individuals and small private groups. We know the Arctic like no other company and love to share it. Upscale and exclusive, we offer both scheduled trips available to anyone and custom expeditions for clients such as Disney, National Geographic, the occasional world-renowned polar explorer and of course, discerning travellers. Cover Photo: Sheattie, one of our senior floe edge guides
Ensuring that you touch, see, hear, smell and taste ‘the last great wilderness of our planet’ and the proud people who live there drives everything we do.
We travel in small, groups of 4-12 fellow adventurers. (Any Inuit guide will tell you that a larger group size compromises your ability to feel and see what the Arctic has to offer.)
We’ve done away with the hotel walls and permanently parked the tundra buggy. With no cruise ship railings, no trail markers, and no clip-boarded pre-programmed, pre-packaged schedules we put as little as humanly possible between you and the Arctic you’ve come to experience.
One of the most captivating places on earth, the Arctic boasts vast stretches of treeless tundra, icebergs, abundant wildlife, rich Inuit culture and a remarkably invigorating isolation from the rest of the world. To truly experience the Arctic is to understand the essential Inuit belief that everything in nature is infused with the spirit of life.
We intentionally guide you comfortably out of your comfort zone where your pulse will quicken and your senses will sharpen – a sure ticket to revitalized awareness. And while our trips are very carefully planned on the one hand, they are at the heart, an emotional experience guaranteed to elicit life-long memories that will remain keen and vibrant long after you’ve returned home.
Gaze into the wild eyes of a snow-white polar bear that no other human being has ever seen. Hear the sound of whales (before you see them). Touch the aqua blue surface of a millennium old iceberg. Listen to the riveting yet humbly told stories of someone who was born in an Igloo and has never lived below the Arctic Circle.
why us? This is not a land to take lightly and if you’re only going to visit the Arctic once (or if you really have fallen in love with it), don’t you want to see, touch, feel, experience, the real Arctic? Our approach to luxury adventure in the Arctic is about the richness and authenticity of the experience rather than the number of Michelin stars. We enjoy a great restaurant, bottle of wine, or five-star hotel as much as anyone but we also know that nothing tastes better than an exceptionally well-prepared meal after a day of tracking polar bears. Squeezing every great moment of your time with us is our sole mission. You no doubt will have high expectations and we aim to exceed them. We believe we are uniquely qualified to do this because we possess two (proprietary) competitive advantages: our approach to guiding and our gear! “Arctic Kingdom - the world’s leading company for managing complicated logistics in the North” –Scott Polar Research Institute 1. Our Approach to Guiding We bring you the best of both worlds – old & new. Our local guides and elders have been travelling and living on the land all their lives. They are constantly in search of hidden treasures; their knowledge and secrets are built into every one of our trips. Combine this old world traditional knowledge with the very latest in new world ‘cutting edge’ Arctic equipment and technology – (from satellite imagery for wildlife tracking), to rigid polar bear proof structures and the latest spotting scopes and the result is an exemplary experience: one that ensures three things: i. Authenticity of experience – “the real arctic for real travellers” ii. A higher probability you will see animals you came to see iii. Luxury, safety, comfort and warmth 2. Our Gear Quite simply, because we own all of our own equipment, no other operator can provide access to the depth and breadth of activities we can. Whether you want to build an igloo with an Inuit elder or film a multi-million dollar Disney film production (as we did when we helped Disney film the movie Oceans) – we have the gear. What this means is that your range of options and activities is greater with us than with anyone else. We own everything from compressors and hyperbaric chambers to airboats, hot air balloons and 15 types of the latest arctic camp set-ups - all stored in different communities throughout the Arctic.
Arctic Kingdom’s cutting edge use of technology has been featured in articles by the European Space Agency and as an Intel case study on remote communications. Although we have access to almost every kind of advanced technology in the field, the best navigational route may come from a suggestion of one of our Inuit guides, who for generations have lived in an area and may offer advice not obvious as a first choice from technology alone. To have both options and all of the data, modern high tech and proven wisdom passed down through generations is to have: “the best of both worlds” START YOUR ADVENTURE TODAY! +1 (416) 322-7066

trip types Designed for upscale adventurers in search of a transformational travel experience our Arctic itineraries immerse the traveller in the spirit of the Arctic and allow them to participate in something meaningful, authentic and real. Whether you’re planning your first and possibly only Arctic trip and want it to be the ultimate, or you’re planning another visit and you know you want more - we have the itineraries that ensure you will experience the real Arctic. Scheduled Trips A scheduled trip has a fixed date, fixed itinerary and fixed price where you can join a group of up to 12 fellow adventurers Private Trips A private trip is any trip that is not open to the general public, it therefore has a flexible departure date. There are three types of private trips: 1. Block Trips: a block trip is a private trip based on any of our scheduled itineraries, the easiest way to block a trip is to simply take over an existing departure date for your group. 2. Private Adventures: these are set itineraries that have been pre-planned and run before. Starting prices are based on a minimum
private group size of 4-8. While the core architecture of these trips is fixed, tweaking and customizing them can easily be accomplished – see our website for a long list of Private Adventures that include: dog-sledding, skiing, hot air ballooning, a helicopter flight to see Polar Bear dens and cubs, catching arctic char, snorkelling with whales, or building (and sleeping in) an igloo above the Arctic circle.
There are few trips that still startle the imagination – climbing Everest, sailing around the world, crossing the Sahara, going to space or going to the Pole – for those who can make the commitment the reward is stamped forever. “More people have gone into space or climbed Mount Everest than have sledged to the North Pole”
3. Private Family Trips: this concept is simple; take one of our trips (scheduled or private) and let us weave-in enriching opportunities for kids, teenagers and adults. There is nowhere like the Arctic, where elders are revered and respected, to bridge a generation gap and create lifelong memories.
“Why would someone willingly subject themself to the most arduous adventure imaginable? Are these individuals possessed with strength of spirit far in excess of most people? Do they feel the need to pursue scientific inquiry or patriotism beyond what is common to others? Or do their exploits simply hint at unbridled hubris and unquenchable pride? Perhaps, in reality, a complex mixture of motives including service and self-interest combine to drive these intense individuals.” –Tom Fitzpatrick
Custom Expedition Planning If you can imagine it, we can make it happen. We can do for you what we do for National Geographic, Disney, the military and world-renowned polar explorers. Whether your dream is a full-on expedition to the North Pole or simply (or not quite so simply) to hot air balloon over it, video an elusive Greenland shark, or dive an Arctic shipwreck, we can make it happen. The possibilities are as wide open as the north.

safety, environment & leadership Thanks to years of experience in the north, we know what it takes to see the real Arctic - safely. Our expedition leaders are highly skilled Arctic expedition professionals. And our Inuit guides aren’t just visitors to the north. It’s where they’ve lived and worked all their lives. What’s more, this knowledge and expertise is backed by a comprehensive Arctic Safety Plan, training, and state-ofthe-art technology. Whether it’s diving, transportation or logistical equipment, we own and use the best available. Top of the line systems ensure instant communication with Arctic Kingdom headquarters and local response teams. With the finest satellite phones, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs), survival suits, life rafts, electric fences, perimeter alarms and more, we take care of your safety so that you can enjoy your trip worry-free.
Stewards of the Environment You’re planning an Arctic trip because you understand that the north is a unique, priceless and fragile region. And so do we. That’s why Arctic Kingdom is dedicated to sharing our knowledge of this matchless habitat with the rest of the world. It’s why everything we do is built on the foundation of preserving the delicate environment and protecting this unique part of the world.
Leadership Graham Dickson is founder & Chief Expedition Officer for Arctic Kingdom Polar Expeditions, the world’s only company to specialize in the animals of the arctic and to have successfully led diving expeditions for all of the arctic’s marine animals. In 2005, Graham was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Based on our belief in environmental leadership, all of our trips are designed on the principle of zero-footprint camping. All of our interactions with wildlife are conducted with the utmost care and respect, with the minimum amount of impact. We also support the work of global charitable organizations in protecting the arctic environment, the ocean, and the animals and the peoples who call the arctic home. Sometimes the letters we receive from our travellers are so extraordinary that we can only stand humbly before them, an excerpt from a letter below (a recent participant on our Pond Inlet floe edge trip) stands as a testament to the power of a “best of both worlds” authentic Arctic experience … …home seemed a long way behind me and Baffin Island, still just an unknown and distant destination and as I settled into my travels north, I realized that I had not really thought about what I was doing. I had no expectations. Indeed the trip was not even my idea, but that of a good friend and avid Arctic enthusiast and traveler. And while the adventure angle appealed to me I had no idea, no appreciation for what I would experience in the days to come. Words really can do no justice to capturing the majesty of the landscape and the deepness of the Inuit people. Sure I’d seen Polar Bears in the zoo, but this was like seeing them for the first time. And as real as the adventure was, it was tempered and contrasted by the luxuriousness of our camp, the tents which the term itself
belies their spaciousness and comfort, the full washrooms with shower (a real winner with my wife I will tell you) and the food which was simply superb. So to my friends at Arctic Kingdom, I say well done and thanks… thanks for the exemplary planning, the Canada Goose parkas, the surprisingly and well appreciated comfortable seats in the sleds (aka qamutiks) and of course, thanks to our guides whose willingness to share their amazing knowledge and friendship helped define for us an adventure the like of which we will never again enjoy… unless of course, we book for next year. My wife is already lining up friends to join us.

Day 2 Early morning departure for Kuujjuaq and transfer planes to Kangiqsuallujjuaq. Overnight in local hotel.
Day 3 From town you travel by qamutiq (kam-oo-tick) - Inuit name for ‘sled’) towed by a snowmobile. Each qamutik has two sheltered seats on the back that look like “lazy boy chairs” on shock absorbers. The trails will take you over lakes, past the tree-line and to the sea coast approximately a 4 hour journey. Along the way you may see arctic fox, polar bears. Arrive at the Igloo Dome luxury base camp set directly on the coast of Ungava bay in the foothills of the Torngat Mountains and relax in your private Igloo dome. POLAR BEARS AND NORTHERN LIGHTS OF THE TORNGAT MOUNTAINS
vertical walls of ice, and continued eye stimuli, yet the adventure has only begun
Day 4-8 One Day Helicopter Sortie in search of Polar Bear and the Torngat Caribou Herd We fly over the ice floe where the ice meets open water and see a mother and cubs at an open body of water. We land on a small island and observe the mother the cubs that follow close behind. We spot countless polar bears along the way, as well as the rare Torngat Caribou herd – only accessible by helicopter.
Daily Polar Bear Sorties via Snowmobile and Cabriolet Sleds We conduct daily sorties out onto the sea ice and directly in the midst of the polar bear country via snowmobile and the covered sleds. There are countless polar bear tracks criss-crossing the sea ice and evidence that polar bears are in the area. We spot polar bears climbing islands, or hunting seal in an open body of water
known as a polynya or simply crossing the ice heading to a new hunting ground. From the curious young juvenile bears, to mothers with cubs, to an absolute giant of an alpha male, there are all types of polar bears to observe in their natural habitat. It's quite possible that we are the first time these polar bears have ever been encountered by a human. Northern Lights Situated directly in the prime Northern Lights viewing band where the most intense and reliable northern lights occur, we eagerly await sunset each evening and the first hints of the northern lights to appear in the darkening night sky.
Day 9 Morning flight through Kuujjuaq to Montreal.
experience designer We are proud to set the bar even higher for a whole new level of remote luxury adventuring. The foothills of the Torngat mountains of northern Quebec (Nunavik) is truly an undiscovered region that rarely sees a traveler. We are thrilled to work with the local Inuit to open up this area for our new premiere luxury Igloo Dome base camp for polar bear and northern lights viewing. It is amazing. Want to know more? Ask for me any time. Thomas Lennartz

bears, glaciers, Inuit culture and icebergs make this an unparalleled adventure.
itinerary (group size 8-12 people) The following itinerary is used as a guideline for what to expect, but due to animal movements, ice conditions and weather, the daily itinerary may change.
Day 0 Arrive in Ottawa and check into Ottawa hotel.
Day 1 Depart Ottawa for Iqaluit and onto Pond Inlet (approximately 4hrs of flying time). Your journey begins when you arrive in Pond Inlet. After dinner, enjoy a truly authentic cultural presentation of Inuit throat singing, drum dancing and storytelling by local elders. Overnight in Pond Inlet hotel.
Day 2 After breakfast, you will meet your guides on the beach (yes! there are sand beaches in the Arctic as well!) and depart for the floe-edge where ice meets open water. You will travel by qamutiq (kamoo-tick - Inuit name for ‘sled’) towed by a snowmobile across the sea ice. Each qamutik has two sheltered seats on the back that look like “lazy boy chairs” on shock absorbers. Your route of
• View a vast array of wildlife on their annual migration such as pods of the tusked mystical Narwhal • Observe the king of the Arctic – the polar bear eye to eye in his natural habitat on the pack ice • Kayak at the floe edge amongst floating ice, watching Arctic life unfold around you • Experience the real Arctic, up close and personal fully escorted and in partnership with the local Inuit people
activities • wildlife viewing • photography • kayaking • by request: snorkel or scuba diving
testimonial The narwhal whales were an amazing sight and I had one swim right under my feet at the floe edge. The kayaking was excellent...I look forward to my next adventure with you! A. M. - Ontario, Canada
NARWHAL AND POLAR BEAR FLOE EDGE ADVENTURE
approximately 90km/55 miles (3-6 hours) may include tea-stops at historic grave sites, hanging glaciers, and an abandoned whaling station. The final destination will be the ice floe edge where a base camp will be set up within 50 feet of the ice edge (conditions permitting). It is an incredibly picturesque journey, we go slow to allow you to see all the spectacular sights at a relaxed pace . Enjoy being 'out on the land' as the Inuit like to call it.
Day 3-6 Your ice floe edge base camp will enable you to enjoy the warm spring weather (midday sun 24 hrs/day) and engage in a variety of activities both on the land and at the floe-edge. The likelihood is high that you will see narwhals, ring seals and over 15 species of migratory birds. (for April and early May departures there is also a high likelihood of seeing beluga whales). During the week, there is a chance to observe polar bears in the pack ice possibly on the prowl for seals or sunning themselves.
Finally, not as frequently seen as the narwhal, we may be fortunate to see bowhead and beluga whales and/or walrus . Pure white ivory gulls, gaudy king eider ducks, low flying northern fulmars, thickbilled murres, Kittiwakes, and greater snow geese are just a few of the bird species to be seen. Ice conditions permitting, there will be a visit to the bird sanctuary with 20,000 plus birds nesting not far away.
Day 7 Return to Pond Inlet late in the afternoon, explore the hamlet and possibly purchase soapstone carvings or local prints. Overnight in Pond Inlet (local hotel).
Day 8 Early morning departure via Iqaluit for Ottawa.
NARWHAL AND POLAR BEAR FLOE EDGE ADVENTURE
experience designer Surrounded by glacier capped mountains, Pond Inlet rightly claims to being the ‘jewel of the Arctic’. This is one of my favorite (of many) Arctic locations. To see the mystical narwhal is a sight I guarantee you will never forget. To see a polar bear that, perhaps, no human being has ever seen is equally unforgettable! Ask for me anytime to give you a first hand account of this experience. Andrew White

Day 0 Arrive in Ottawa and check into Ottawa hotel.
Day 1 Depart Ottawa for Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut and Canada's newest territory. Change planes and arrive in Igloolik/Hall Beach - the starting communities from which our journey begins. themselves. We observe the walrus diving for clams and repeatedly hauling themselves out of the water and back up onto their resting platform on the ice.
Day 3 We travel by boat far out into the Foxe Basin where we come upon a pair of walrus huddled on the ice pack. We quietly watch these enormous animals and take photographs from both the ice and boat getting as close as our expedition leaders and Inuit guides will allow. We enjoy a hot lunch on the very same piece of ice as the walrus, which are not at all concerned by our presence. On the journey back we spot a few Bowhead whales cruising the icy waters.
Day 4 We journey out again by boat. The bright sun reflecting off the crystal-clear flat waters is simply magical. We come upon four large floating islands of ice covered with Walrus. At least a hundred animals sit on each island and steam rises from the group as they sun
Day 5 The wind has picked up and we decide to explore the land and ice closer to the base camp. We take some time to visit nearby Thule ruins and learn about traditional Inuit life.
Day 6 The sea is completely mirror calm. We spot a Polar Bear swimming amongst the ice on the hunt for Walrus . We return to the floe edge where the Bowheads patrol and enjoy relaxing amongst the regular whale sounds.
Day 7 Early morning departure to return to Ottawa

SUMMER POLAR BEARS AND WALRUS OF COATS ISLAND
Remote and exotic - Coats Island is a

wildlife haven for polar bears, walrus & a myriad of birds witnessed by only an elite few
itinerary (group size 8-12 people) The following itinerary is used as a guideline for what to expect, but due to animal movements, ice conditions and weather, the daily itinerary may change.
Day 0 Arrive in Winnipeg and check into hotel.
Day 1 Early morning departure for Coral Harbour. Overnight in local hotel.
Day 2 Travel by local boat to the luxurious yet rustic land-based camp where you'll be welcomed by fresh beverages and hot meal prepared by our chef. See hundreds of walrus on “Walrus Island” on the way. Walrus island is home to hundreds of walrus in the summertime. The walrus herds congregate in different groups on various beach areas along the island. The island has a constant buzz of activity. While hundreds of walrus jostle for
• Be one of the elite few to observe polar bears in their natural habitat on the exotic Coats Island of northern Hudson Bay • Spend hours getting up close to the hundreds of walrus sunbathing on nearby Walrus Island. Maybe even see a polar bear on the hunt! • Visit the local bird sanctuary where there are 30.000+ nesting birds. A sight to behold • Experience the real Arctic in stylish yet rustic designer remote eco-camp.
activities • wildlife viewing • boat cruising • hiking • upscale tent camping
testimonial So many polar bears and walrus, outrageously good food...it was a joy to be able to see all that we have in the comfort of this great camp. A. & D. London - U.K.

position on the beaches, others dive in search of clams or take a swim to cool off. Keep you eyes open for mothers carrying their young on their backs. The rocky terrain and gentle slopes allows you to easily hike in for a closer look while still remaining out of site so as not to frighten the walrus. Each group of walrus will have one walrus that is always on the lookout and will alert the others to move quickly to the water if they feel danger (such as a polar bear) is approaching.
Day 3-7 Search the coast and nearby islands for bears. In the summertime, when seal isn't available, they feed on walrus, caribou, and fish. Bears can be found patrolling the shores in search of food and it is along the shores and its surrounding islands that we will look for them. In the summer landscape, they are easy to spot and once at a good vantage point, we will shut off the engines and watch the bears in their natural habitat.
Bird Sanctuary Visit the nearby bird sanctuary where 30,000+ birds such as black billed murres are nesting. Hike on Islands Take a short hike in the morning around camp and keep an eye out for lemmings, arctic hares, or caribou. In the evening we have a wonderful dinner of arctic char and watch the long evening sunset with a glass of wine while the reflections dance before our eyes.
Day 7 Return to local community and visit an archaeological site of the Sallirmiut - the last of the Thule tribes. Overnight in Coral Harbour.
Day 8 Afternoon flight to Winnipeg after a visit to Kirchoffer Falls and possible Arctic Char fishing.
experience designer When I first came here in 2006 with a german wildlife film crew, we were astonished by how beautiful Coats and Walrus Island are, and by the sheer number of animals. I also thought “how is it that no one comes here? We need to change that. This is now one of the best locations to see polar bears and walrus on one single trip during the Arctic summer. Come fall in love with it as I did. Want to know more? Ask for me any time. Krisytn Thoburn

life defining moments...
exotic flowers, make this a journey colorful to the extreme
itinerary (group size 8-12 people) The following itinerary is used as a guideline for what to expect, but due to animal movements, ice conditions and weather, the daily itinerary may change.
Day 0 Arrival in Ottawa. Check into the hotel of your choice.
Day 1 Depart Ottawa for Iqaluit by jet. Transfer planes for Qikiqtarjuaq. Fly over Auyuittuq National Park. Keep an eye out for Mt. Asgard and Mt. Thor with the world’s tallest vertical cliffs at over 5000ft. On arrival, transfer to your waiting local cruiser boat and thread your way past islands to the upscale base camp located on a pebble beach. Keep an eye out for polar bears on islands as you pass by!
Day 2-7 From the pebble beach base camp you will experience the true essence of the Arctic in the summer. The following is a sample of what can be done over the course of your stay:
• Experience and observe polar bears at eye-level in their natural habitat as they ring edges of surrounding islands in search of seals • Bowhead whales spyhopping, finning and slapping their flukes sometimes meters away • Vast fiords and aweinspiring Penny Ice Cap glaciers that end abruptly in the sea • Dorset ruins, Inuit culture, blue berries and crimson arctic sunsets
activities • wildlife viewing • boat cruising • hiking and kayaking
Surrounded by islands and steep walled fiords, the scenery, the activities and opportunities of observing bowhead whales and polar bears is second to none at this time of year. Polar bears often

testimonial We had a great time! We had a great guide introducing us to Inuit culture as well as wildlife. We enjoyed getting to know our guides and their family. The scenery is too amazing to capture in pictures. D. H. - California, USA
POLAR BEARS, BOWHEAD WHALES AND GLACIERS OF BAFFIN ISLAND
are seen on islands throughout the area. In some cases, more than 20 polar bears have been seen on the boat ride from Qikiqtarjuaq to base camp alone. Travel by boat down the long and deep fiords including Coronation Fiord and North Pangnirtung Fiord with sheer walls 1000’s of feet high on each side. Bowhead whales, the largest whale in Canadian waters, are known to frequent the open waters about a 30 min boat ride from camp. A day trip to the Akshakyuk Pass in one of Canada’s most beautiful National Parks. You can hike at the base of North Pangnirtung Fiord amongst braided streams that flow into the fiord from the pass. Visit Dorset ruins about 1 hour boat ride further south along the coast of Baffin Island. As we get closer to the Dorset ruins, keep an eye out for Bowhead whales. Hike at the Penny Ice Cap glacier that sweeps down Baffin Island and into Coronation Fiord. To see where the ice caps - one of the last ice age glaciers to remain,
meets ocean and calves icebergs is a wonder few have seen. Relax and absorb the long Arctic sunset where it seems almost impossible that the sun hangs on the horizon - almost as if someone hit the pause button as it pans across the mountains and bathes the land in a crimson light. All this from the upscale base camp of which the location was carefully selected to be near the most picturesque lakes and boulder strewn rivers. Take a glass and drink. It doesn’t get any fresher or more pure than this. While in camp, feel free to pick blue berries, or try fishing for Arctic Char.
Day 5 Transfer back to Qikiqtarjuaq by boat and take a mid-morning flight back to Iqaluit and onto Ottawa.
POLAR BEARS, BOWHEAD WHALES AND GLACIERS OF BAFFIN ISLAND
experience designer Just say “Qikiqtarjuaq” to anyone from Baffin Island and all respond with the same “It’s beautiful!”...and there’s a good reason why! ARVIAT POLAR BEARS & NORTHERN LIGHTS FLY-IN CABIN ADVENTURE
ARVIAT POLAR BEAR & NORTHERN LIGHTS FLY-IN CABIN ADVENTURE
Global warming is a reality, and is pushing the polar bears north to Arviat
life defining moments...
away from Churchill. We drop you right in the middle of them
itinerary (maximum 8 people) The following itinerary is used as a guideline for what to expect, but due to animal movements, ice conditions and weather, the daily itinerary may change.
Day 0 Arrival in Winnipeg. Check in to the hotel of your choice.
Day 1 Depart Winnipeg for Churchill. On arrival transfer to a waiting private charter aircraft for a 40 min flight to the Arviat Polar Bear Cabins situated halfway between Churchill and Arviat on the Hudson Bay Coast only a couple of miles south of the mighty Gellini River. The cabin placement is very strategic for reliable polar bear encounters and amazing photography. As the river to the north of the cabins is 5km wide, polar bears are traveling north along the Hudson Bay coastline but are prevented from moving any further north due to the river. This is where the cabins have been placed. Directly in ‘polar bear alley’ where we live with them, observe and photograph them while they wait for both the river and the Hudson Bay coast to freeze up.
• Be the first to live where the polar bears live. Observe them 24-7 from the new Arviat Polar Bear Cabin Compound • Remote and rustic, yet the most real and authentic polar bear viewing possible anywhere in the world • Aerial flight seeing in search of the Quamirjuaq Caribou herd • Day hike for on the ground, eye-to-eye photographic encounters with polar bears • Shimmering northern lights
activities • polar bear viewing • day hikes with guides • northern lights observation • dogsledding
testimonial Every year we have seen more and more bears. Last year alone we saw more than 300 polar bears pass through. They come right to the cabins. Ryan S - Arviat Inuit Guide
ARVIAT POLAR BEARS & NORTHERN LIGHTS FLY-IN CABIN ADVENTURE
Day 2-4 Polar Bear Observation, Trekking and eye-to-eye photography Aside from observing polar bears when they come right into the complex (we deliberately have not installed a perimeter fence around the camp to provide a more natural experience of interaction). Our Inuit guides know these polar bears intimately. They understand their behaviour after years of living amongst them. Your Inuit guides will take you on day hikes outside of the Arviat Polar Bear Cabin complex. Knowing that your guides will keep you safe, you’ll be able to approach polar bears from the ground for up close photographic opportunities. Expert Guiding In many instances, the polar bears are friendly, in good spirits and will not approach. At times there will be a curious polar bear who will come towards us, yet, our guides will keep us a safe distance at all times. This is the most authentic, safe and up close
method of approaching polar bears and seeing them eye to eye anywhere. Northern Lights Situated directly in a prime Northern Lights viewing band where the most intense and reliable northern lights occur, we eagerly await sunset each evening and the first hints of the northern lights to appear in the darkening night sky.
experience designer
Day 5 The local Quamirjuaq Caribou herd at times comes within a few miles of the Arviat Polar Bear Cabin complex. On the return flight back to Churchill, we will check the up to date coordinates of the herd and attempt to search and locate the 400 thousand large herd. Transfer to the late evening scheduled flight back to Winnipeg from Churchill.
I am very excited about this new polar bear experience. Arviat, the little known community just north of Churchill, has been seeing more and more polar bears every year. We are proud to be working in partnership with local community to open the new Arviat Polar Bear viewing compound complete with rustic cabins. No fences, no vehicles (aside from our aircraft). You live where the polar bears live. Yet in safety and comfort. Want to know more? Ask for me any time. Graham Dickson

NARWHAL AND POLAR BEAR FLOE EDGE SCUBA DIVE ADVENTURE
The best diving you’ll do in your life. Dive through cracks, along icebergs, in pack ice, on the Arctic sea floor and enter a whole new
life changing memories...
world that will astound you at every breathe.
itinerary The following itinerary is used as a guideline for what to expect, but due to animal movements, ice conditions and weather, the daily itinerary may change.
Day 0 Arrive in Ottawa and check into Ottawa hotel.
Day 1 Depart Ottawa for Iqaluit and onto Pond Inlet, the starting community from which your journey begins. After dinner, enjoy a cultural presentation of Inuit throat singing, drum dancing and storytelling by local elders.
Day 2 After breakfast, you will meet your guides on the beach (yes! there are sand beaches in the Arctic as well!) and depart for floe-edge where ice meets open water. You will be traveling Inuit-style by qamutik (kam-ootick) and snowmobile across the sea ice. Your route of approximately 90km (3-6 hours) may include tea-stops at historic grave sites, hanging glaciers, and an abandoned whaling stations The final destination will be the ice floe edge where a base camp will be set up just back from the ice
• Electric blues of ice all around. Dive in cathedrals of ice, ice caves, tunnels. A surreal new world • Narwhals may approach out of curiosity while diving at the floe edge. • From macro sea floor life, to big ice formations, the variety of options to dive make no two days the same. From overhead to no diving in open water. • Experience the real Arctic, up close and personal fully escorted and in partnership with the local Inuit people
activities • scuba diving /snorkeling • upscale sea ice camping • wildlife viewing
testimonial The dives were some of my favorite dives ever...and not a small compliment either considering I have over 1000 dives. Outstanding! T. M. - Saskatchewan, Canada Best dive I’ve ever had! K.N. - Waterloo, Canada NARWHAL AND POLAR BEAR FLOE EDGE SCUBA DIVE ADVENTURE
edge (ice conditions permitting). It is an incredibly picturesque journey and we take our time to allow you to see all the new sights at a relaxed pace to enjoy being 'out on the land' as the Inuit like to call it.
Day 3-6 Your ice floe edge base camp will enable you to enjoy the warm spring weather and engage in a variety of activities both on land and at the floe-edge. The first dive on arrival will be a check-out dive in open water. Explore the Arctic sea floor, sea anemones, urchins, starfish and glittering jelly fish. Each dive will build on the previous dives experiences - from open water diving off of the floe edge, to diving in pack ice- where ice is 10 feet above the surface, but shoots down 90 feet or more in spires reminiscent of an upside down cathedral tower. Become enamoured and amazed at the surreal world of blue, turquise juxtaposed with the black depths below. The play of
light on ice and water is a photographers delight. Dive sites change year to year as ice condition differ, but when possible we will attempt to dive alongside a grounded iceberg accessed through cracks. The dimpled sides, old water run-off tunnels and different light patterns emanating from cracks and melt water pools from above is mindbendingly cool. Where and when possible, we will attempt to dive with the passing Narwhal. Potentially also see polar bears. Minimum dive certification is Advanced. Drysuit experience preferred but we can work with you to get you comfortable.
Day 7 Return to Pond Inlet for an unhurried journey over the sea ice. Explore Pond Inlet and possibly purchase soapstone carvings or local prints.
Day 8
Early morning departure for Ottawa.
