Active Adventures

11:00 AM

The Un-Cruise Advantage We play outside—rain or shine.   We play in the water.  In the woods.  Even in the mud. We think it’s pretty cool and our guests tend to agree.  It’s all about the untamed wild and woolly wilderness and the many ways you get to discover it.  But no matter your interest, our goal is to provide you with a mix of outdoor opportunities while making it easy to enjoy moments or hours of escape and relaxation. The   choice and pace are yours. It could be kayaking and paddle boarding one morning and snorkeling the day after that. Another day may offer a gentle afternoon shore walk or have you feeling the muscles burn with a rigorous hike (or a little bushwhacking.) And if you just feel like taking it easy, that’s okay too.  For those who take their adventure on the lighter side, you can enjoy riding in the skiff or chatting up the Captain on the bridge.

2:25 PM

Whether you are looking for mild, moderate or rigorous outdoor pursuits, or a more Zen wilderness experience, we offer activities to suit a variety of skill levels during your un-cruise. We also rank our hiking excursions with an activity level rating to ensure you are comfortable with your selection: 1 – Easy; 2 – Moderate; 3 – Challenging; 4 – Strenuous; 5 – Difficult.  Depending on where you might be exploring, the Expedition Leaders and Guides will provide needed insight for you to make a safe and enjoyable choice.

Gearing Up Each expedition ship is equipped with top-of-the-line kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. T   here is a nominal daily use charge for snorkeling gear and wet suits.  Limited quantities of hiking poles are available on board for your use.   What to pack varies depending on your destination.   A detailed packing list for each destination is available on our website and in your travel documents. Adventure Activities Include: • Whale Watching • Unbelievable Kayaking • Paddle Boarding • Inflatable Boat Excursions • Unspoiled Wilderness Hiking • Caving

• Unmatched Glacier Viewing • “Polar Bear Plunges" • Birding • Untamed Wildlife Observation • Tropical Beachcombing • Waterfall and Shore Hikes

Educational opportunities come in many forms. Underwater hydrophones, bow-mounted cameras, and microscopes provide closer exploration.  We'll also visit with locals for engaging cultural encounters. You   can visit the Captain on the bridge and have oneon-one conversations with our expert naturalists.  Learn about the wildlife and region during onboard lectures that occur depending on where we are and what we’re doing.

Beach Time

Adventure opportunities abound, but just in case you want more, we’ve arranged some additional excursions with local experts to further enhance your experience. Guided fishing, flightseeing, camping trips (to name a few) are available for purchase on board. InnerSea Discoveries | 5

Southeast Alaska & Glacier Bay Unmatched Hands-on Exploration Shaped by massive glaciers over millions of years, the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska (also known as the  Alaska Panhandle) reveals wildlife-rich fjords and spectacular scenery.   The Tongass National Forest—the largest in the US—is 16.8 million acres and consumes the majority of the area.  Other features include Glacier Bay National Park; Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands; and Misty Fjords National Monument.

10:15 AM

Russian settlers left their legacy in churches and towering totem poles reflect the history of the local T   lingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Indians.    For centuries these protected waterways have served as important travel corridors for Native Indians, explorers, and gold-rushers seeking their fortunes. T   oday there are still no roads connecting the towns of Southeast Alaska,  and modern day residents still travel by water as their predecessors did. Glacier Bay National Park is recognized as a biosphere reserve, as established in 1986 under the MAB (Man & Biosphere) program of the International Coordinating Council.  In 1992 the 3.3-million-acre park also became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, 15,000-foot mountains rise straight out of the ocean and massive glaciers flow across the landscape,  covering thousands of square miles. Explore this unforgettable “natural laboratory” where receding glaciers reveal a landscape that has been covered with ice for tens of thousands of years.

4:20 PM

When’s the Best Time to Visit? That question seems to often come up no matter what destination. W   ith Alaska travel, it’s almost always the first question asked. Rain, bears, whales, sunlight, temperature, number of people, fishing, snow level, insects, flowers, birds, northern lights—how much, how little, how long, where exactly, how thick, what variety, how high/low—these are all key interests when planning your Alaskan vacation. It’s The Big Land, and therefore, there is no “cookie cutter” answer. The following guideline best describes when “skies are most blue” and when salmon change hue...

8 Days / 7 Nights — Juneau to Sitka (or reverse) Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and remote wilderness exploration highlight this adventure. Spend days cruising among massive icebergs, hiking into wildlife-rich forests; standing atop a glacier; kayaking, paddle boarding and riding a skiff along a dramatic fjord; learning about the Tlingit culture; and whale watching. Day 1: Juneau — Embark Welcome aboard! Meet the crew, settle in, and relax with your shipmates. Within minutes you’ll cruise the scenic channels of the Inside Passage. Days 2-4: Glacier Bay National Park Early morning, you’ll enter Glacier Bay National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve.  Here you’ll pick up the National Park Ranger who will be with you to explore coves and corners of the bay that most visitors miss. One of America’s crown jewel national parks will be yours to explore and marvel at for the next three days. Here in the bay there are sea lions, mountain goats, bears, moose, eagles, and spectacular scenic backdrops.

8 | The Un-Cruise  Adventure

Linger near South Marble Island and spot the many species of birds that call this area home, keeping your eyes on the water and the island for brightlycolored puffins.  After searching for more wildlife, stop at the Park Service’s Headquarters at Bartlett Cove for a hike through the rainforest or possibly a native cultural presentation. Tidewater glaciers sweep like rivers of ice down massive mountain valleys, terminating before you in the waters of Glacier Bay.  Enjoy two consecutive evenings in virtual isolation inside Glacier Bay at anchor in a hidden cove as larger vessels have exited the bay. Conditions permitting, you’ll also have a rare opportunity to hike or kayak or tour via shore boat. Day 5: Icy Strait Set your course for arguably the richest whale waters in Southeast Alaska. Join the Captain on the bridge or the Expedition Leaders/Naturalists out on deck in search of marine mammals, primarily in the Icy Strait/Pt. Adolphus area.  Ride the skiffs for a closer inspection of the remote coastline with eyes set on the shoreline for possible bear sightings.

Day 6: Chichagof Island Meander along the waterfall coast of Chichagof Island. In the spirit of expedition un-cruising, marvel at the grand scenery as our crew expertly guides you through the hidden treasures of the region.   Anchored in a remote shelter for the evening, there'll be another grand opportunity to lower the kayaks and skiffs. Enjoy another delectable dinner onboard and relax in the hot tub before calling it a day. Day 7: Peril Strait Running 50 miles from Chatham Strait to Salisbury Sound, this haven for small ships is scenically highlighted by a very narrow connecting passageway called Sergius Narrows and an opening at Hoonah Sound. This wildlife-rich waterway is a great place to explore the shoreline for bear, the waters for otters and whales, and to watch for eagles. T   he passage narrows to only 300 feet in one spot (24 feet deep.) After an adventurous, but “non-perilous” day, toast your voyage with a festive Farewell Dinner and a “photo journal” of your trip presented by your Expedition Leaders.

Itinerary Highlights • Glacier Bay National Park & Biosphere Reserve • 3 Days of in-depth exploration with a Glacier Bay Park Ranger • Glacier viewing in Glacier Bay • Whale watching in Icy Strait • Wildlife viewing along Peril Strait • Bartlett Cove trails and visitor center

Day 8: Sitka — Disembark Gather for breakfast this morning as you cruise into Russian-influenced Sitka for disembarkation.   A transfer will be provided to the airport or our hotel. Due to the nature of our explorations, itineraries are guidelines and will change in order to maximize wildlife and natural encounters. Variations   in itinerary and the order of days may occur.

Day 5: Wrangell Home to native culture, wildlife, and wonder—Wrangell is one of the oldest towns in Alaska and the only one ever governed by four nations. Brush up on your Tlingit culture at Chief Shakes Tribal House for native storytelling. V  iew recently carved totem poles at Kiksetti Totem Park.

Day 6: Yes Bay Wildlife abounds in Yes Bay and the surrounding Tongass National Forest—orca, porpoise, seals, sea lions, brown and black bears, mink, marten, and eagles.  Say yes to a kayak paddle up the bay or a wildlife-seeking hike along a scenic trail. Day 7: Misty Fjords National Monument Representing nearly every ecosystem in Southeast Alaska—its steep walls and glacial valleys filled with sea water are a haven for wildlife. By kayak or skiff, glide through Walker Cove soaking in the splendor of this largely forgotten corner of the world. Day 8: Ketchikan Alaska’s southernmost city and “salmon capital of the world” also claims fame to having the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles. Spend your day exploring the Saxman Totem Village and the notorious Creek Street, once a red-light district. Keep watch for eagles as we cruise out of Ketchikan.

“The loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean” — Mark Twain

9:15 AM 22 | The Un-Cruise  Adventure

The Hawaiian Islands

2:45 PM

Uncommon Exploration Experience the islands from a different perspective.  As the 50th state of the United States, and the only US state made up entirely of islands, the Hawaiian Islands are best known for their beauty, beaches, water activities, and active volcanoes. Explore tropical waters by kayak, paddle board, snorkel, and skiff, and the shoreline by foot. T   he 76-guest Wilderness Explorer provides an exceptional base for active adventures.

1:00 PM

A Wildlife and Marine Sanctuary Formerly known as the “Sandwich Islands”—as named by Captain Cook following his visit in 1778—this archipelago of volcanic islands and atolls sits at the center of the North Pacific Ocean marking the northeast corner of Polynesia.  The island chain forms the largest marine sanctuary in the world, consisting of more than 7,000 marine species, about a quarter of which are found nowhere else on earth.  The protected islands and atolls offer a breeding site for millions of seabirds, and are home to endemic, exotic and endangered animals, including the Hawaiian monk seal, the nene goose (official state bird), the Hawaiian Honu green turtle, and the pueo or Hawaiian owl.  The shallow-warm waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands provide one of the world’s most important habitats for humpback whales. Two-thirds of the North Pacific population migrates to Hawaii each winter for breeding, calving, and nursing.  We encounter many of these same humpbacks in Alaska where they feed during the summer months.

Legend and Lore Dipping into coves, primarily on the leeward side of the islands, our flexible 7-night adventure actively explores the islands of Lana’i, Moloka’i, Maui, and the submerged crater of Molokini.  A long the way, experience traditional Hawaiian culture with opportunities to get to know the locals by visiting their land and their homes.

AdventureBound Hawaii 8 Days / 7 Nights — Roundtrip Maui

A marine sanctuary, remote sandy beaches, towering volcanic peaks, and pristine islets with partially submerged craters are your playground. Hike to waterfalls, kayak and paddle board in tropical waters, snorkel alongside turtles, restore a taro field, and “talk story” with locals. Get your aloha on with this 7-night Hawaiian Islands wilderness adventure. Kalaupapa N.P.

Molokini

Lana’i Kaho’olawe

Day 1: Maui / Lana’i — Embark Transfer to our hospitality suite in Lahaina for a warm aloha from your Expedition Leader.  Following an introduction to your weeklong adventure, a ferry carries you to Lana’i’s Kaumalapau Harbor to the awaiting Wilderness Explorer.   Search for marine life during a sunset cruise before dropping anchor for the evening. Day 2: Coastal Lana’i Steep rock faces, white-sand beaches, and ancient volcanic plugs sitting both above and below the water surface line the shores of Lana’i.  Gear up for a day of play.  Hike along shore or snorkel, paddle board, kayak, and explore by skiff.  The Humpback National Marine Sanctuary—located between Lana’i, Moloka’i, and Maui—provides front-row seats in these productive marine breeding grounds. Day 3: Lana’i’s Manele Bay Start your day searching for dolphins at sunrise.  Or sleep in and later, drop in on a yoga class on the top deck. T   he choice is all yours! T   his morning, options for golf, cycling, horseback riding, and hiking ashore are on you adventure menu.  Take advantage of all the equipment on board for activities, and relaxation. Day 4: Maui / Molokini An included sunrise treat takes you ashore to Maui’s Haleakala National Park—an elevation of 10,000 feet.   By midday, be on deck for whale watching as you sail to Molokini for drift snorkeling at this almost submerged crater off the coast of Maui.  Squeeze in some swimming, skiffing, or napping before dinner.

Day 5: Maui Nui Marine Mammal Search Seek out Hawaii's famous marine mammals, highlighted by the humpback whales that arrive in late fall and leave in the spring escorting their newborn

calves to a summer-long feast in Alaska. T   he Captain takes you to the best spots for observation. At anchor, snorkel with sea turtles and a colorful variety of sea creatures. Listen for the sounds of the humpback via submerged hydrophones and watch the underwater action from aboard as the bow-mounted camera conveniently catches the below surface scenery and marine life. Days 6-7: Moloka’i – Halawa Valley Meet the people of Moloka’i and experience their land and traditions as few visitors ever do. Hike the switchbacks of the Kalaupapa Trail or ride on a surefooted mule (optional). Hands-on activities await in the Halawa Valley: hike with a local resident through his land to a hideaway waterfall; learn about the history and archaeology of this ancient homeland; restore local taro terraces; help ready poi for an evening pa’ina (local feast); and explore the charming paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town of Kaunakakai.  Spend an evening “talking story” with a local guest and enjoying a traditional pa’ina, complete with a home-style Hawaiian music “jam” session.

Itinerary Highlights • Hands-on cultural experiences in Moloka’i’s Halawa Valley • Rare sunrise visit to Haleakala National Park • Enjoy a true Hawaiian pa’ina • Humpback whale watching off Moloka’i, Maui, and Lana’i • Visit ancient Hawaiian ruins and help rebuild ancestral taro terraces • Drift snorkeling at the Molokini crater • Explore the cliff-lined bays and warm beaches on Lana’i

Day 8: Lana’i / Maui — Disembark Aloha! The Wilderness Explorer returns to Lana’i’s Kaumalapau Harbor.  We’ll transfer you via ferry to Lahaina and onward to Kahului A   irport or our nearby hotel to begin your post-cruise extension. Due to the nature of our explorations, itineraries are guidelines and will change in order to maximize wildlife and natural encounters. Variations   in itinerary and the order of days may occur.

Guests must notify us in writing at the time of booking of any physical or mental illness, disability or other conditions for which special accommodations or the use of a wheelchair is necessary or contemplated.  Also we must be notified of any medical treatment that may render the guest unfit for travel or constitute a risk or danger to the guest or anyone else onboard. Guests needing any form of assistance and those who are physically disabled must be accompanied by someone who will take full responsibility for any needed assistance during the cruise and in the event of an emergency. We reserve the right to refuse passage to anyone who, in our sole opinion, may affect the health, safety or enjoyment of other guests. Guests requiring a wheelchair must provide their own collapsible wheelchair. Please be aware that some ports of call, shore excursions, docks, gangways and other ship requirements may preclude a wheelchair guest from leaving the vessel; this decision will be made by the Captain and is binding. Additionally, there may be certain physical conditions, including raised doorway thresholds from 2 to 16 inches, stairways and narrow passageways within the vessels that may limit or preclude the accessibility of wheelchair guests to some areas. Due to the limitations of vessel facilities, bookings cannot be accepted for women who will be 30 weeks or more pregnant at the conclusion of travel. Women in their third trimester (greater than 24 weeks, but less than 30 weeks) must submit a letter from their physician granting permission to travel by ship (and for air travel, if applicable).
