this project is a revisited work from the spring 2012 semester at judson university. it addresses the issues surrounding the urban food desert in the east garfield park area of chicago. analysis focused on influences created by surrounding metra bus hubs and the two educational facilities adjacent to the site.

the site sits between kedzie ave and sacramento blvd and is near a green line stop on the “L”. programmatic requirements include a retail market/ educational facility, a barn with attached cooling and processing areas, greenhouses, and hoop houses.

education/green line influence

by using the influences of education and transportation, this project aims at blending cultures through encouraging education and better food choices than those currently available in east garfield park.

k-rob architectural delineation repeat this project involved selecting a work that was either a winner or honorable mention in the k-rob architectural delineation contest and duplicating it without tracing. the original image had to be expanded from its original size (215x287 px) in order to be made legible. graphite and colored pencil on vellum. the original (left) was rendered by steve quevedo of the university of texas (arlington) and was awarded best in show and juror citation victories in the 2005 competition.

church on the water study this set of drawings began as the same twelve-minute exploration done for the architectural canon studies (middle). ando’s church on the water provided a good degree of frustration with white pencil on black paper for the medium. as a result, i decided to draw the same image again, after the original sketch to better capture the image. initially the same time limits were applied, and eighteen minutes were later added on to further refine the final produt.

architectural canon perspective drawings

exercises involved drawing the original image as shown. there is a set time limit for different stages of drawing. two minutes are given for structuring the sketch, six for adding understanding, and four for value (top left). each is to be done using progressively softer line weights, usually ranging from 4h to 2b. after this, a second perspective is drawn without a new image using the same time guidelines (bottom left). original master work: s채yn채tsalo town hall, alvar aalto

taking cues from rem koolhaas and the seattle public library, this design seeks to use the library as a container and meeting place for digital and print media. this idea aimed at preserving the boook as an artifact while embracing the changing technologies of this century. analysis led to considering axes of opportunity on-site through pedestrian and vehicular traffic. a minor axis connects the library to the town hall/archival building to the northeast with an invitation to the residential community to the south of the site. from this, a hierarchy developed with community spaces providing the foundation, or first level of the library. the second level houses media spaces, a gallery, and a conference room/screening room for presentations and special events. the third floor is devoted to traditional bound books with research stacks and individual study rooms with one group research space. initial massing models (left) experimented with opening the site for pedestrian traffic along these axes and allowing the local businesses to play a role with classes, wine tastings, and other community functions.
