Coordination

Junior Architect – Primarily tasked with stages four to six for high-end residential projects, but also explored master planning of an ecologically responsible logistics facility, as well alternative green-building materials. Experienced a short stint working on a construction site for an eco park where building materials were mostly recycled materials such as plastic waste or shipping containers.

COMPETITION PROJECT SUMMARY The project suggests an extrovert architectural nature, more joyful and ecstatic, with a looser, more open framework that stimulates the spaces within us. An arts centre by its very nature allows for a whimsical freedom to approach the architecture as an artwork; the curvilinear gives rise to a poetry that influences life and transforms the university through an explicit spatial dimension, generating form innate to the concept. The design accommodates ideas, relations and blended conditions to create an experiential space, acting as a precinct typology that functionally suspends the parallel dynamics of fluidity and rigidity to facilitate evolution and growth. Culturality is continuously dis-entangled and re-entangled through the medium of creativity towards generating a vibrant intercultural interchange. The design intention is a move towards finding a renewed and revitalized vocabulary for human life in the city, simultaneously evolving through democratic, scientific, and artful aspects. The successful integration of mutually evolving societies begins where differing idioms are laminated into a threshold architecture. This does not represent a compromise, inherent to our uncertainties, but as a dynamic ecological logic within our differences and reciprocation of ideas emanating from the rich capital, from which our architecture could begin to reinvigorate its educational paradigm. This project is a competition entry developed from my dissertation, and entered into an international competition as an alternative design to traditional universities. Part of a two person team. Later published in a book and online. Hosted by Non Architecture

The design intention is a move towards finding a new vocabulary for human life in the city, simultaneously evolving through democratic, scientific and artful aspects. This tends to imply that rather than a city designed for efficiency and planning for general distribution of basic systems as if urban quality can simply be gridded up as a resource, but rather creating a focus on hotspots as nodes of insipient and potential that commits itself to sensory, vivid phenomena – like ripples in a pond from dropped pebbles – through new facilities, popular events or new monuments.

By revising place, image, modes of and uses of monuments in Durban’s inner city, intercultural ideas can be generated through a building that acts as an icon, a logo; a mascot, for change. As a new concept of monument, the intercultural precinct could mark a point in Durban’s social history, to keep the vibrant charisma of place and infuse new energies to create fresh growth. The building is not an end in itself, but by mutually creating energy for its surroundings, injecting mutual functions, kinetic qualities and proactive spaces into it. To design is to hope : what are we hoping for?

Heimdallr's Post Heimdallr's Post serves as a gateway to understanding the Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, located on Kurgi farm in northern Latvia. The concept draws from the myth of the Bilröst as the burning rainbow bridge between heaven and earth, as it soars into the sky to serve as an observation tower and an ecological education centre for the region. The form is inspired through a biomicicry of equine anatomy, following the elegant curve of the Ardennes' muscular contours, accentuating the dynamic flow of a perceiver's eyeline as it it drawn upwards towards the clouds. Atop the tower sits an observation post from where the vast nature reserve can be admired.

This project is a competition entry Part of a two person team.

The structure grounds itself with fluid, monolithic plinth of concrete that translates into a light, screened superstructure that is bronze-coloured to provide a warm, soft, rich silhouette in the natural landscape. The natural wetlands of the surrounding terrain is then weaved through the architecture to integrate the project into the environment and encourage natural ecosystems to develop again in the farmland.

OVER THE EDGE coursework project The Unravel concept explores a more tangible approach to design through emotion and sculpture. The approach to this concept started with visualizing desired adjectives to best describe the impression one would feel when experiencing the architecture – followed by sculpting a form without first sketching it out on paper. The form is of a singular ribbon that wraps around a conical enclosure – the studio – before unfurling out and swooping up into an obelisk expression. The fluidity and femininity of the curvilinear line are characteristic of some forms of Arabic calligraphy – particularly of ‘ummi’ – the Arabic word for ‘mother’ and an inspiration for the form.

The allegorical driver of ‘unravelling’ is indicative of shedding socially accepted norms of what can drive architecture, allowing an artist the freedom to reach beyond collective imagination and show how fragile yet resilient reality can be. “An architect’s role is to show how fiction can become fact”
