A Visit to Teluk Intan

A Visit to Teluk Intan

Teluk Intan, located in the Hilir Perak District of Perak that surrounds by Perak river, Malaysia, is a town with a rich history and culture. Teluk Intan is already known town because of its unique landmark, Menara Condong. Not only that, Teluk Intan is also best for tourist attractions because the rich of culture as well history and its natural features.

This visit to Teluk Intan intoduced us to more potential of Teluk Intan from many different aspects, such as architectural, historical landmarks and monuments, culinary, art and craft, perfomances, natural wonders, festivals and cultural events.

The visitation to this town is a way to understand their uniqueness that we cannot experience at other places, understand what is missing and lacking and what need to improve.

WEBSITE

Group 3 for design studio 4 is focusing on video animation of 3D Teluk Intan, journey video during site visit, and macro site analysis, such as climatic condition(sun, rain, and wind) and senses.

CULTURAL MAPPING

A cultural mapping project is a project to get closer with the culture and unique atmosphere of Teluk Intan through self-exploration, interview and online research. In a smaller group, I and my team focused on festivals, cultural events and community mapping of Teluk Intan. After the project, we realized that Teluk Intan has a lot to offer from festivals like tanglung festivals and Guan Gon festival, community events like night market and donation projects, cultural events like Chitrai Pournami, and performances like dragon dance and lion dance.

MICRO SITE STUDY

Each group has different site. For my group, it’s site C.

Site C is located at one of big junction of old Teluk Intan town and the grass field at one of the corner. Within this area, there is a war memorial stone or also known as Batu Tenggek.

Around this area, there are some heritage trails such as Mosque Sultan Idris II Mosque, St Luke Church, and old court.

It’s actually a first gate when you entering the old town of Teluk Intan.

TELUK INTAN’S DISSECTION

Visual representation of Teluk Intan

Teluk Anson(now Teluk Intan) is located at a strategic position where port facilities and railway lines can connect to the north and south part of the Peninsula. One of the development programs for Teluk Anson was transportation systems that made Teluk Anson become the focus of the arrival of various communities.

The origin are those coming from Sumatra, Java and Southern Thailand and were a class of merchants and farmers at the time. The Chinese came from the Strait Settlements, had a good relation with the British and were involved a lot in economic development. The Chinese community is made up of Hokkian, Teuchu, Hakka, Cantonese, and Hailam. Then, the Indian community is composed of ethnicities such as Telegu, Punjabi, and Tamil. (A.wright & T. H. Reid, 1914)

The process of urbanization took place quickly after the British colonial built the town of Teluk Anson. This process of urbanization has made rural communities coming from the agricultural sector compete to carry out economic activities in the city because they have tended to economic activities in the form of manufacturing, business and trade (K. J. Pelzer, 1941)

While developing the town, the communities needed a place for worship. During the 1860s, the Indian Muslim community built a mosque in the town center where the first ‘Khutbah’ and prayers were held. Then, in 1883, the Hokkian Chinese community built Hock Soon Keong Temple for centerpoint, where they solved problems from giving aid to the poor to solving fights between clans. Other than those, more worship buildings were built during British colonization such as St Luke Church, Tamil Methodist Church, Madrasah Al-Ihsaniah, Sri Thendayuthapani Temple, Kampung Batak Rabit Jamek Mosque, and Church of St. Anthony of Padua. (From Teluk Intan Heritage Trail guidance book)

The basic concept : Diversity on the community that affects the way of living in Teluk Intan

First layer - Teluk Intan as one body

Teluk Intan has very diverse communities and it makes the town vibrant. The merge of people from different communities make Teluk Intan unique. The layer consists of ornaments of Teluk Intan various community

Second layer - Pattern

At here, the communities divided to three part, each community has unique pattern, whether it taken from the sacred place, clothes, or even when they are doing they festivals.

Third layer - Various activities by the community

Each community has its own belief , and that belief creates performance or activity that different from one to another.

PLACEMAKING 3

Gallery Bridge

The idea of bridge came from the site itself, where it kind of hard to cross over from one corner to another corner. It is essential to have something on top as well since the sun at there is hot, so the roof plays role as sun shading. Bridge also help to overlook Batu Tenggek from top, because bridge has clearance height.

IDEATION CASE STUDY

YUSUHARA BRIDGE - KENGO KUMA

This bridge is inspired me on function of the bridge to main building, where at one end there is main building that connected and on another end, there is a lift that bring visitors up and down from another side.

TIMBER BRIDGE IN GULOU WATERFRONT

This bridge most likely inspired me on how the wood joinery and construction works for the bridge. Since, the proposed bridge material is timber. The joinery that overlap to each other creates beautiful framework of the bridge.

Gallery Bridge

Teluk Intan has solid cultural diversity and has 3 strong ethnicities. Each ethnicity has their own uniqueness and unique performance and events. In this vibrant town as well, they celebrate any festivals together including religious and non-religious festivals.

Problem Statement :

Teluk Intan tourists promote Teluk Intan as cultural heritage tourism especially when they have a lot of events in one small town. Tourists when come need to know what events happened in Teluk Intan, so they need clear information and place to see the performance.

Design Idea:

Place is inspired by the pattern of the Malay, Chinese and Tamil as well as local material. This bridge has purpose to serve tourist with festival exhibitions in each table.

Design Development :

Bridge to connect P3 site and religious site

Bridge needs clearance height at least more than 4m because Teluk Intan has some truck passing by In this proposal, Bridge cannot immediately connect to the mosque, because the actual pedestrian walkway is not enough area, so safety road and pedestrian walkway merged and created underpass for vehicles

Cultural Tourism Ideation

Cultural Tourism Ideation

The ideation of proposal is to have a place for tourists to go through the progression of Teluk Intan from Bristish colonialism era to Teluk Intan era that now celebrates a lot of diverse festivals and community events throughtout clothing. While they look back, they also can rent out some clothes to have great memories with Teluk Intan old town, while they can take pictures or even join the parade that community holds.

In the same building, there will be a fashion stage for local to show up their clothes, the theme is following the theme of what is going on at Teluk Intan at the moment, like for example, if near to chinese new year period, they might do fashion show to show some clothes or even artwork that red or even show the dragon or pheonix on it. Goal is to teach young locals to protect what they have and inherit it to the next generation. For tourists itself, it is to attract them to wear those clothes and vibing around Teluk Intan old town!

CASE STUDY

It is designed by Alberto Campo Baeza, the museum aspires to be “the most beautiful building.” Its architectural form is similar to the Central Headquarters of the CAJA GRANADA Savings Bank, which Campo Baeza built in 2001.

Andalucia’s Museum of Memory is located Granada, Spain that completed in 2009. It is built to communicate the whole history of Andalusia. From the Roman times, Strabo (an ancient geographer) described the inhabitants of Andalusia as “the most cultured of the Iberians, with laws in verse.” Visitors will be welcome by interactive journey of Andalusia’s culture and past within its four large hall room with the collection of Andalucia’s memory.

The ramp from this case study is inspired me to develop more program. Not only that, I learnt more on how to construct helical walkway and what kind of material that being used.

ANDALUCIA MEMORIAL MUSEUM

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is located on the last five acres of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., once the center of the nation’s slave trade, prominently across from the Washington Monument.

There are four panel modules in total, with opacities ranging from 65% to 90% depending on the orientation. To determine the best location for each module, the architects used algorithmically controlled energy analysis software as well as full-scale mock-ups on-site. This ensures that exhibition spaces are shielded from direct sunlight and glare while allowing public spaces to benefit from an abundance of natural light.

This is a facade case study that inspired me to create dissection of ornaments that exist at Teluk Intan. It focus on giving expression as well as sun-shading to the interior of the proposal.

RAMP IDEATION

RAMP IDEATION RESKETCH

In the first ideation, it used double helical walkway to immerse with the progression of Teluk Intan through clothing.

IMPROVEMENT

Resketching to get better visualization of how the ramp being used. It surrrounded by the clothes showcase from bottom to the top.

Ramp has some requiredments needed to be followed, like the degree of the ramp (1/12) as well as human heights. Since the walkway is going to be used by human, so the the distance between foot to the base of the ramp must can fit at least 1.8 m of human. After several calculation, only single ramp can be applied.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

MOCK UP #1 VERTICAL CIRCULATION

The proposed building will have 3 floors in total. The helical walkway or the helical ramp is being used to support vertical circulation toward the building.

LINKED BRIDGE AS ENTRANCE

While P3 form-making, there is one consideration that need to think of, which is the linked bridge. This is one of the scenario if the linked bridge is being used as the entrance

MOCK UP #2

LINKED BRIDGE AS THE ENTRANCE

The bridge is connected to lobby by the glass lift that overlook the workshop or anything that happened inside the building.

MOCK UP #3

LINKED BRIDGE AS THE ENTRANCE

Another scenario, is using the linked bridge to bring visitor from other site through transparent walkway that overlook what is happening inside

MOCK UP #4

BRIDGE AS END POINT

At this point, the main entrance is only one, however the linked bridge still can function as the entrance. The linked bridge itself functions as link between proposed building to the other heritage site that has heritage trails, such as Mosque Sultan II Idriss and St Luke Church

MOCK UP #5

CONCLUSION

The linked bridge is used as end point, however it still can function as the additional entance. The linked bridge’s location is adjusted based on the proposed building. Circular tower is added as vertical circulation.

The base level of second floor is following the proposed bridge.

FINAL PROPOSAL 5

DESIGN IDEA

The idea comes from cultural diversity at Teluk Intan which makes small town has a huge range of activities, event as well as festivals. At first, I thought about festivals that related to costume, which enhcance the ambient of the festivals more. It will be more beneficial for local community to have more tourists to enjoy what they have within the town, including participating local events, visiting Teluk Intan heritage trail, and vibing around Teluk Intan.

However, tourists usually comes to Teluk Intan for its already famous Leaning Tower, come only for visit and then go out from Teluk Intan without exploring the gem of Teluk Intan.

In this proposal, tourist will explore Teluk Intan in diferent ways, which is throughout the costumes and clothing from British colonial era until Teluk Intan now. Clothing reflects the social, economic and political context of different eras. From clothing, tourists may discover the hidden story of Teluk Intan as well as imerse with the progresion of Teluk Intan.

MASTER PLANNING

The Thread of Time Gallery has linked bridge to other heritage trails, which are Sultan Idriss II’s mosque and St. Luke church. Tourists may rent out the costume to take pictures around Teluk Intan and many heritage trails.

For master planing, it will be concetion to Batu Tenggek since the Batu Tenggek was placed by British soldier which means there is a proof that Teluk Intan was being colonized by the British back then.

HELICAL WALKWAY OR SPIRAL RAMP

The spiral ramp use as vertical circulation for the building as wel as part of the building program, the ramp is being use to lok through the costume from British colonial era until now that relate to Teluk Intan. The way its going up reflects how Teluk Intan from now to Teluk Intan in the current era.

The ramp itself is made by steel and supported by 4 concrete columns.

BALCONY DETAIL

The balcony is proposed by the same language of proposed bridge for project 2. It’s inspired by the shape of flower in Chitrai Pournami festivals. The function of it to make way back for cat-walkers to go to backstage and for tourists to overlok the view of old Teluk Intan Town.

FACADE STUDY

The facade is a disection of the pattern around Teluk Intan. The pattern and ornaments from worship places such as mosque and temple, and festivals like chitrai pournami. The facade itself, then later being simplified following the first masing of the panel.

This panel is made by customized timber panel. This panels are located at the openings of the buildings, mostly at the facade that face to the junction of Teluk Intan. The facade panel creates the interplay of shadow and light around that oepnings.
