Located on the upper two floors of the Hotel Van Zandt, Strata encourages relaxation and exploration for it’s visitors. The contemporary bath house involves a series of undulating wood members that direct the user through the many bathes within the space. The form of Strata creates an intimate and social setting for the users while also providing functional uses such as seating, stairs and over head conditions. The selective use of natural materials and lighting seeks to generate a mood of serendity and a tranquil atmosphere. Strata refers to the horizontal layering of elements within the bath house, the slate ground plane, the volumes of water and the undulating depositing of wood members.

The porous nature of the wall system/ screen allows for visual connection between the individual users of the space. However, a sense of privacy is created due to how densely packed the wood members are.

Emerged is a housing complex comprised of many different typologies of apartments, open office space for coworking, a market, and recreational activities. The organization of the complex allows both private and public spaces for the individuals living on the site. There are many levels throughout the site that create interesting experiences for individuals. The housing structures are designed on top of a plinth which contains the office spaces. The arrangement of apartments are based off Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation which allows for more density. The negative space that the buildings provide create courtyards for the residences; while the market, located underneath the highway, creates a physical connection between both halves of the site.

TRI-COLOR Acoustical Panel Illustrator, Photoshop In collaboration with Katie Kligerman

The Tri-Color acoustical panel is an innovative assembly that is composed of the sponges from ink cartridges. The idea of the innovative assembly was to design an acoustical panel made of up recycled materials. The organization of the sponges is a gradient of the colors providing an aesthetic quality. The panels can be arranged as a series or be strictly individual.

The Care Clinic is an encouraging and supportive facility. The design is centered around the patient’s experience, acknowledging that each patient will have a unique experience. There are a variety of spaces like the care room, meditation space and library that cater to the individuality of the cancer journey. This individual experience will be facilitated by physical separation of space, a care based side and recreational side. The use of technology will help establish a more personal feeling in the space. Patients will feel at home in the comfortable nooks located throughout the care clinic and will feel energized by the graphic patterns and lighting in every space. Each space will be primarily guided by the patient’s experience with secondary focus on the comfort of the care givers and care providers.

Plan

Patients in the AYA community are in need of space that gives them a sense of belonging as well as give them the encouragement and motivation they need to beat the disease.

Using graphics to define the care center was a driving design concept. In the space, graphics are used as a wayfinding technique, as well as, an experiential mechanism. There is an emphasis on giving patients a unique experience that could only be achieved through graphics.

STUDY ABROAD The European Study Abroad program allows for students to engage architecture in a different way then studio. The program involves traveling to four different countries (Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, and France) and studying in Paris for two months. During the travel portion of the trip, we were encourage to capture the architecture, space, and light through sketches.

The Landing

Gensler Houston, Intern Project In collaboration with Alexa McCallum, Alec Moran,Cassandra Crawford, Elizabeth Stinespring, Emma Wright, Hannah Monroe, Jackie Chen, Jasper Gregory, Kamini Chavda, Kaushik Anatharam, Jenny Liu, Malachi Pursley, Michele Lee, Nicole Lide, Nina McDermott, Olivia Jiang

The Landing is a transportation hub for Metro at the north end of downtown Houston. Houston is in need of a transit hub that provides needs for commuters who are traveling in from the surrounding areas. Located right across from Buffalo Bayou, The Landing serves as a connecting point, drawing people in from the bayou, commuters, as well as, employees around the area. The whole idea was to bring and move people together by providing activities for all to enjoy.
