Peace of the mountains inspires artist in Keene By Griffin Kelly

E

mma Silverstein is a potter, bassist, drummer, singer and a ballet dancer, but a better word that sums up her is artist. This 22-year-old from Southbury, Connecticut, works at Craigardan, a nonprofit organization on Hurricane Road in Keene that provides residencies, community classes and workshops for different art forms such as pottery, culinary arts and agriculture. She works as a potter and is currently making 150 dining sets of plates, bowls and cups for Craigardan’s benefit dinner in the spring. She makes her own schedule and spends a good amount of time throwing clay on a pottery wheel. After the pieces are molded and her hands are dripping with water and clay, she puts the ceramics in a kiln that heats up to more than 2,000 degrees above zero. Silverstein said she thinks people are fairly detached from their objects today. Not that she’s promoting materialism, but she thinks people don’t often recognize the effort and care that goes into a plate or bowl, or that people don’t recognize that an object’s legacy and usefulness might surpass their own. “It’s cool to think that the objects I make will outlive me by thousands of years,” she said. Silverstein lives in a house owned by Craigarden on the shoulder of Hurricane Mountain. To the north, Big Crow and Little Crow mountains can be seen. The house is down a long and slightly steep path that ices over heavily in the winter, making it difficult for some cars to get back to the road. Luckily, Silverstein doesn’t have to worry about automobile troubles. She doesn’t have a car and can walk the quarter-mile through the woods to the ceramics studio. Her room is the perfect size for one person. A twin bed

rests by the door while a secondhand drum set resides in the corner next to Fender Squier bass guitar. A white Casio miniature keyboard sits on a shelf on top of a record player she barely uses because it has only internal speakers, so the sound quality isn’t the best. On her nightstand are other noise makers: bells, a mouth harp and stuff you can hit with a drum stick. When she plays at local venues, such as the January Jam open mics in Upper Jay, she has a distinct voice and style that make the cover songs all her own. Whether she’s beating a floor tom to the rhythm of a train and singing “Subway” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or playing her bass-only rendition of Roxy Music’s “In Every Dream Home a Heartache,” when she starts, it’s as if there are no other sounds. The Adirondacks and Craigarden offer the environments Silverstein looks for in a place to create. “It’s quite secluded on the top of this little mountain,” she said. “So I have a lot of time to be quiet and think, or be quiet and not think.” Silverstein doesn’t think the Adirondacks are a place for every artist. Some people need a lot of social interaction to fuel their work. “It would be more beneficial for artists who are working with or for stillness or quietness or the environment, because there’s more earth than people up here,” she said. “For a clay artist, that’s perfect.” However, she also thinks being a little uncomfortable is a good thing, especially for someone her age. “Sometimes you want to put yourself in a place where you don’t know if you’d thrive or not,” she said. “Don’t underestimate yourself just because you’re young. A lot of the things around here are powered by the enthusiasm of young people.”

C Consider onsider S School chool D Districts istricts Contributor Emily Luxford

As you begin the hunt for a new home, several elements will contribute to the guidelines framing your search.

Petrova Elementary School Principal Bryan Munn, left, gives a high five to a student as he arrives for the first day of school.

Number of bedrooms and bathrooms, square footage and neighborhood will all play a role — but so should schools. Even if you don’t have —and don’t plan to have —any children, the quality of a school district will affect the cost of a home, whether you are aware of it or not.

HIGHER LISTING PRICES

This is both a benefit and (possibly) a disadvantage. Wellplaced homes in sought-after school districts are popular — and will therefore always garner a nice price. People with children are willing to pay more to ensure their kids receive a good education. Yes, it will cost you more now, but it will mean more money for you later if and when you sell. Is the probable payoff later worth the higher purchase price now? Keep in mind you will most likely get more house for your money outside of a sought-after school district if square footage is your primary concern.

HIGHER TAXES

Property taxes are a significant factor in overall home cost and maintenance. Homes in highly ranked school districts tend to have higher property taxes. Houses just outside the boundaries will retain features of the neighborhood you desire but will most likely have considerably lower property taxes.

MARKET SECURITY

Homes in a coveted school district have a way of weathering real estate market dips — which can be a welcomed piece of security in our recovering economy. A quality education will always hold value, and so will any means of getting one. If you are looking for your next home to be a true investment, don’t ignore school rankings when you make your choice.

“International complexion brings the opportunity to live in an exceptional place and have an exceptional education.” “There is no other place where a 16 year old can do more in one week than in Lake Placid.” – Michael Maher, Northwood School Principal in Lake Placid

“Our area has a very long history of embracing community. You don’t have to be living next door to be considered a neighbor. Our schools are no exception. We have top notch teachers and support staff who hold students accountable, bring forth their best and, most importantly, love and care for them. We work closely with our families and relationships are held with the utmost importance in a child’s success and happiness. There are [countless] activities for all ages and interests inside these seemingly endless acres of lakes, beautiful mountains, and happy, caring people.” – Bryan Munn, Petrova Elementary Principal in Saranac Lake

“We bring nature into the classroom and the classroom into nature.

The Adirondacks is rich with tradition and history unlike any other, and with it the freedom to live, grow and learn in the beauty of the mountains.”

– Sonja Franklin, Lake Placid Elementary Principal in Lake Placid

High sound from the lake bottom

Schroon Lake man crafts submerged logs into guitars By GRIFFIN KELLY Eric Bright held up a thin piece of Adirondack red spruce and tapped it in different spots. Knock, knock, knock. “See, you can hear the nice tone in it,” Bright said. “That means it’ll produce a good sound.” He did it again with a piece of maple. Knock, knock, knock. “It’s a little duller,” he said. “It won’t sound as good as the spruce.” In a few months that thin piece of spruce will be the top of a guitar, handcrafted by Bright. Bright loves working with his hands, but his day job never really called for it. He worked in special education in the BOCES system for 33 years. He retired a few years back and now spends his days building guitars out of logs he finds at the bottom of Schroon Lake for his company, BassRock Guitars. “When I was getting closer to retiring,” Bright said, “I took a course from Dave Nichols up near Malone.” Nichols is legendary as a North Country luthier. In the class, Bright learned how to build his own guitar in just one week. He loved it so much he started planning how to make his own shop. Bright’s house rests on the shore of Schroon Lake opposite state Route 9. There’s a back road that connects to the highway, but that takes a while and might not even be passable during the fall and winter. So Bright and his wife, Mary, normally just cross the lake if they need to take out the garbage, pick up mail, buy groceries or visit his studio in town, where he houses his finished guitars. In the summer they take a boat, and in the winter when the lake is frozen, they walk, ski or snowmobile. The basement is dedicated to the guitar shop. It kind of looks like a smaller version of a high school shop class with a drill press, band saw and belt sander. Clamps and tools hang from the ceiling for easy access.

Tacked to the wall is a list of female names. Audrey, Belle, Kate and Lucinda are just a few of them. “You always name your guitars after a woman,” Bright said. He had two finished guitars in his shop that day. The names are written on the inside of the instruments. He lowered a mirror into the sound hole of the first guitar and read the name. “Rosemary,” it said. He read the next one. Her name was Lucy. “When you play them both,” Bright said, “you can really tell the difference between Rosemary and Lucy.” Rosemary and Lucy are guitars now, but their stories began more than 100 years ago. In the 1800s, logs were transported by way of water. At certain times rivers and lakes would be full of timber, making the water barely visible. Some of the logs became soaked with water and sank to the bottom of lakes. These are the ones Bright goes after. There’s a defining feature of the logs from the old days: Each one measured exactly 13 feet, 4 inches long. Bright remembers sitting on the dock of his home and wondering if any of the wood in the shallows was from one of the old logging companies. “I remember going out with a tape measure with my daughter and measuring it, and sure enough, it was right: 13 feet, 4 inches long,” he said. “So because I have all these crazy ideas, we got a rope around it and we dragged it. I didn’t have a tractor back then, so it took five or six of us to pull that log out of the lake.” The log sat outside the house for a while before Bright decided to slice it up with his chainsaw. After the first cut, he smelled a sour aroma and thought the wood must be oak. He brought the wood to Nichols, who realized it was actually Adirondack red spruce, which some consider to be the best wood for guitar tops as it creates a loud yet smooth tone. Now every summer, Bright and his daughter Katie snorkel in Schroon Lake, searching for 13 foot, 4 inch logs. “It’s like a treasure hunt,” he said.
