The Sembrich reopens, announces 2022 summer festival

BOLTON LANDING — The Sembrich reopened in May following an extensive historic preservation project that provided critical updates to the treasured facility. The project included a new roof, improved lighting, complete rewiring of the building, HVAC replacement, restoration of historic light fixtures, and more. The newly improved facility will host several performances in The Sembrich’s 2022 Summer Festival “Reimagining the Classics,” as well as new museum exhibits.

“We are thrilled to welcome visitors back into our historic building to experience the magic of music and history in a delightful lakeside setting,” said Executive Director Suzanna M. Bernd. “The Sembrich Studio will be 100 years old in 2024. Thanks to the work completed in this project, we look forward to sharing the beauty of The Sembrich for another 100 years.”

The 2022 Summer Festival “Reimagining the Classics” will explore reinvention — from transcriptions and arrangements of beloved classics, to rhapsodies and variations on themes of popular composers. Some events will return to the intimacy of the historic Sembrich Studio and others will be held under a lakeside performance tent. Events begin in June and run through early September.

Highlights of the summer festival include:

Reimagining The Classics: Breaking Operatic Traditions - Michael Capasso, New York City Opera General Director, shares his insights on favorite works by Verdi and Puccini, exploring a variety of productions and performance practices from the past 150 years. Soprano Kristin Sampson illuminates the afternoon with famous arias.

Promenade Series: This new outdoor series, modeled on the famous Proms of London, features a wide range of musical styles including classical, light classics, and jazz. This year’s Promenade Series performers are the cutting-edge trio Empire Wild, the comedically virtuosic Bridge & Wolak Music & Comedy Duo, and celebrated trumpeter Chris Coletti.

Spectacular Stradivarius: Elizabeth Pitcairn and The Red Violin — Celebrated violin virtuoso Elizabeth Pitcairn and her legendary “Red Mendelssohn” Stradivarius join her Luzerne Music Center colleagues for an evening of violin showpieces and chamber music! This event will be a fundraiser to help support The Sembrich’s Studio Centennial Campaign.

Touba Family Foundation World Music Wednesday Concerts: This popular lakeside series, now in its 12th season, explores musical traditions from around the globe. This year’s concerts will feature lively music from French Canada by dynamic ensemble .T.., exotic strains of flamenco, jazz, Balkan, classical, bluegrass, and North and East African
