1. SHAPES OF LIFE
SEMESTER 7 | Ar. Sandeep Pethe
Life, as we know it is beyond the elemental and visual form. A house is the symbol of a family’s identity. For this, the house must represent individuality, be flexible to growth and change to adapt to different users.
Moving away from the container, into the unconctained space, we stumble upon the fine nuances that contribute to the overall experience of architecture. These open-to-sky spaces are the heart of Indian lifestyle and process of space-making. They activate the environmental, utalitarian, social, recreational and perceptual realms of society.

High Density, Medium Rise;
A typical village in India grows organically. An environment is curated as an when the need is identified by a grouped many.
Meandering pathways that lead you into unexpected spaces, sometimes take you by surprise but often leave you wondering what makes us human.

TYPOLOGY I
The utility of the uncontained space is governed by creating a hierarchy of contained and uncontained spaces.
Small courts create an intimate setting that is desirable for young children. Since these are adjacent to living units, spill-over activities can take place here. Pathways intersected with larger courts not greater than 20m. A sense of openness enhances the function and utility of such spaces.
These open spaces blur the social distinction by drawing in people to actively or passively take part in these zones.

TYPOLOGY II
A contemporary interpretation of a wada, with a central courtyard & dwelling units looking into it. This creats a large lightwell and constantly redirects the user into a void.
An unfamiliar social realm is created which lies in-between the public & private notion of spacemaking.
What makes the courtyard versatile is the scale of the courtyard itself along with the enclosure from all 3 sides.

“I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a theif. Such is the wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage and therefore, I propse that we replace her old & ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their natuve culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.”

As one wanders through the dirt roads on the Rajmachi Hills in Lonavla, they stumble across a campus that is filled with life & movement. Some of the young adults actively engaged in a discussion about the India-Australia series while others are enjoying a cup of coffee in order to keep them awake for the long day ahead of them. A crew of enthusiastic students, reimagining the short film, In Which Annie Gives It To Those. There’s a group of students hauled around the bridge that flows over the narrow water streams, reciting Tum Toofan Samajh Paaoge? On the lawns around the huts, a troupe, practicing for an upcoming dance festival have attracted students to sit around and watch them perform. One might stumble upon an artist collective with their percious palettes scattered in various parts of the campus, trying to capture the picturesque Pawna Lake with the backdrop of rolling landscapes.

LIFE AT THE CAMPUS
The teaching & learning philosophy is adopted from the Indian Vedic Systems, where a shishya (student) approaches his Guru (teacher) for knowledge. An open learning campus, which aims at vertical courses, thus break barriers of a typical classroom system, and instead have shared ‘trays’ or studios, where in students of all ages can work and collaborate. The Northern light illuminates the entire library without heating it up. Students can have discussions in common spaces or can further seggregate in different chambers with medatative silence. The ambiance of the library is welcoming, since its situated in the center of the campus, making it easily accessible. On the Eastern fringe, lies the faculty housing while, the Western flank holds 200 indefatigable students.

3. WATER & MEMORY
SEMESTER 8 | Ar. Rachna Rakshe
Pune city is located in the State of Maharashtra. It lies at the convergence og two rivers Mula and Mutha. The Mula and Mutha rivers originate from the Sahyadri ranges, traverse across the now Pune city and form Mula-Mutha, which eventually drains into Bhima River. The total length of the three rivers is approximately 44 km. Home to many colleges and universities, Pune has made its mark as an education epicenter, winning itself the title of “The Oxford of the East”. Pune has emerged as a new startup hub in recent years with information technology (IT), engineering and automotive companies sprouting. The city is also known for cultural activities such as classical music, spirituality, theatre, sports and literature. In 2018, the Ease of Living Index by the Indian Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry ranked Pune as the most liveable city in India.

Located on the North-Eastern Side of the Mutha River lies the Vaikunth Smashanbhumi, a crematorium site used by people from all over Pune.
An attempt to blur the edges of water & land by finely integrating wetlands within the campus, giving the river room to breathe. These natural landscapes formed aid in healing those who suffer from loss.
Destigmatising a crematorium by interating public spacing in certain areas makes one appriciate the larger scheme of life.

PEOPLES’ CITY
SEMESTER 7 | COMPETITION Lagos - Plastic City
Known as the Silicon Valley of Africa, Lagos, unlike other parts of Nigeria, is a city & a state. It means, a whole state/province is in the same place, and no matter how deep or shallow your pocket is, there is a neighbourhood for you.
We identified Alaba International Market is one such neighbourhood, that is located near a plastic polluted water body and has a strong context of large market space. We further divided the site into 3 zones; Commercial, Residential & Waterfront zone.
Alaba International Market has no barriers. The market is characterized by huge numbers of sellers and buyers with willingness to purchase based on their needs and income, enhancing long term adjustments to changing the market conditions. Serving as a hotspot for the local residents and businesses, in return generates a considerable amount of waste, which is plastic based.

View of Residential Proposal
Studio apartments, being compact and affordable, are most suited for this region, where residents constantly keep shifting from one home to another. Keeping small scale businessmen, fishermen and ocal craftsmen in mind, these houses are designed in such a manner that the living rooms act as multipurpose area that can be converted as per the needs of the people living there. The fenestrations are provided on opposite walls to enable cross-ventilation.

MARKETPLACE .
It is 7 pm in Alaba International Market. The evening light flickers as the market crowds. The hum-drum of customers haggling with the shop-owners compete with the chattering crickets & bats. You can find here a plethora of thrift shops, serving the needs of kids and adults alike.

The 3 km long road in the market is entirely made pedestrian-friendly and is laid with plastic tiles. This caters to the problem of water-logging, as plastic has a smooth surface, easily enables the water to run off. The road gently slopes towards the drains on either sides, channelizing the water and ensuring minimum wastage of water.
The commercial shops on either sides of the roads, with a straight flight staircase leading to the marketplace, which is spread across on the first floor. Pause & buffer zones are inserted at regular intervals to ensure that the crowd gets some breathing space whilst shopping.

OAN 2021 Grants Entry | Dr. Ashwini Pethe & Dr. Neeti Trivedi
We arrive at empathetic responses when there exists an emotional connection with the place we’re designing in, and such associations arise with childhood attachment.
The site is located 22 km from Pune, near Loni Kalbhor. With a population of 8421 (as of Census 2011) and an area of 665.17 hectares, the main occupation of the residents here is farming.

The village square is one of the most active regions. During the day it acts as a circulation space as vehicles. The square recieves harsh and direct sunlight during afternoons and is hence used for parking. As dusk sets in, the square is occupied by local vendors, aged people, children, mothers, to come out and connect with their society. The square is also used to celebrate cultural events such as marriages, small family function, pujas, etc.
“POSESSION”
In a world of black & white, roads are for movement & buildings for social & business purposes. Occupation & activity is thus woven into floorscapes & building facades.
