ARCHITECTURAL THESIS : HABITAT FOR URBAN POOR
HABITAT FOR URBAN POOR ARCHITECTURAL THESIS ( 2014 )
THE CRUX The rapid urbanization and economic growth in Indian cities because of better resources, job availability and better opportunities in various fields, the increase in rate of migration from rural areas to urban cities has been alarming. Due to such unchecked migration and urban sprawl, problems and issues related to health, hygiene, shelter etc are rising and has become a matter of serious concern. In India, the number of migrants who moved from rural to urban areas stood at 52 million out of a total population of 1.02 billion, as per the 2001 Census. And according to the census in 2011, the number of 78 million is a jump of 51%. The share of rural-to-urban migrants in the population rose from 5.06% in 2001 to 6.5% in 2011.
THE INTENT How and what should be the approach to provide a humane habitat for people living in blighted areas of the urban cities which mainly consists of LIG (low income group) and MIG (middle income group) section of the society? It is here that the working class dwell, without which the city wouldn’t exist and develop as it is right now. The long lost Indian culture of living as a community, irrespective of diversity in culture, ethnicity, religion etc still exist in these areas. This thesis was an attempt to research & study the existing public housing buildings provided by the MHADA (Maharashtra Housing & Development Authority), and thereafter to propose a much more sensible design approach on the self-sufficient low-lying areas of Dharavi in Mumbai, which is considered to be one of the world’s largest slum. Effective design solutions and innovative ideas spanning across layers of cultural, physical, social, economic and other relevant realms and paradigms were explored by researching and studying the evolution of housing typologies in Mumbai. DESIGN GONCEPTS & IDEAS
BUILDING TYPOLOGY DEVELOPMENT TYPE - 1 ( LOW RISE - MEDIUM DENSITY ) These units have mixed use spaces with a minimum standard carpet area of 30 sq.m. The ground floor has space with generous heights which could be used for shops or small scale industries. The volume of these units are higher and is modulated to achieve extra space with lesser floor area. The upper floors have mezzanines which accommodates sleeping/private spaces for small families of 2-3 individuals
TYPE - 2 ( MEDIUM RISE - HIGH DENSITY ) These units are slightly bigger in size with carpet area of 50 sq.m with standard heights. The units are staggered in plan and section to achieve open / terrace spaces which could be used for multiple functions and shared among the units as a connecting or common spaces. These open spaces could be purchased or rented/leased for additional incremental space by families in the future. Apart from that, additional structural framework is also added which facilitates for growth in the future making the building a living/dynamic physical entity, as families occupy these spaces.
TYPE - 3 ( HIGH RISE - HIGH DENSITY ) This type is a combination of type 1 & 2 with an addition of a structural frame which consisted of communal spaces and functions including play areas, education center, community kitchen, elevated terrace farms, medical & healthcare facilities etc.

TERRACE EXTENSION FREELANCE WORK (2019)
An extension to a 25 year old parent’s residence has been a slow work-in-progress project to explore alternative methods of constructions and climate responsive architecture in the tropical contexts of Kerala. The design is quite straight forward and simple, driven by principles and forces of minimalism, modernism, climatic factors, structure and functionality. The 3m wide and 9m long open plan space on the terrace takes about 1/4th space of the 1725 sft. existing residence. Connected with a passage from the staircase inside the house and an external spiral staircase from ground level, the structure is tucked away towards the rear end of the building. With ample terrace space in front for a terrace garden, it opens up to a view of a huge rock right in front of the house. The skeleton structure is fabricated out of modest 60x40mm box sections of M.S and the zincalume roof on top is supported by a space frame made of 10mm slender M.S rods. The latticed clay jaalis cover the structure on the shorter ends ( East & West facing ), acting like a porous skin of the structure allowing light and ventilation. The longer ends ( North and South facing ) consists of operable windows, louvers and sliding doors which adds to the porosity of the structure but also can be closed shut for privacy and security.

RESTAURANT INTERIORS (ADAPTIVE RE-USE) FREELANCE WORK (2019)
Few of the old long building along the coast of Calicut which was once used as godowns during the sea trade, still stands strong. A port city with a flourishing sea trade history, these old godowns and offices lined the coast of Calicut and bustled with traders. As the sea trade stopped, these old buildings slowly transformed into small hotels and ice cream shops over the years, and the beach became a hub for general public and tourists to spend their leisure time. The 8.25m x 6.5m x 2.5m volume in one of these existing building, accommodated a restaurant which was proposed for refurbishment and to transform the interiors into a space which reflects and respects the generous volume and the integral character of the old building. The low height false ceiling was removed to increase the volume of the space which would make the space feel bigger instead of low and congested. The design and interventions were kept as minimal as possible to avoid over designing the space into something too quirky and also due to budget constraints. The client’s call to have a Madurai theme to match the cuisine served in the restaurant, lead to adding simple and minimal spaces for photos, wall art and objects which evoke visuals and memories of cultures and people of Madurai in Tamil nadu.

TRANSFORMATION
The space had an existing low height false ceiling and wallpapers which were all cleared off and taken apart. The entrance part had 2 glass boxes which was used as live cooking counters with a small passage in between them which acted as an entrance into the space.
The removal of the false ceiling opened up a generous volume which gave the sense of vastness in the small space with a limited floor area. One of the glass boxes in the entrance was also removed to create a bigger entrance and for wind movement, as it faced the sea.
3 of the walls had photo frames, wall art and collected objects which captured the essence of Tamil culture and its people. With tamil employees playing folk tamil songs, the experience and the ambiance was heightened a little more.
LITHOS - BOUTIQUE RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS INTERNSHIP WORK AT ARIJEET RAIKAR DESIGN STUDIO, GOA ( 2015 )
Situated in the wilderness of Anjuna, this residential apartment was designed with G+2 floors for sale and rent. With 12 compact living units including 4 furnished units to be rented as serviced apartment, the design followed a very minimal yet a premium approach in terms of its layouts and aesthetics. I had the opportunity to contribute and participate during the project’s conceptual & design process. I was also involved in making 3D models, visualizations & drawings along with site visits and documentation process.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE INTERNSHIP WORK AT ARIJEET RAIKAR DESIGN STUDIO, GOA ( 2015 )
Situated in a dense, yet culturally vibrant part of Madurai city, this 25m x 15m plot for a residence was designed for a family of 4. The requirement was to have 3 bed rooms and 1 guest room , along with recreational spaces like a home theatre and a terrace garden. The design expresses itself as a minimal and modern building in terms of scale, size and its spirit. I was part of the team to produce working drawings, 3D models and site documentation.

OFFICE TABLE FURNITURE DESIGN (2015) An office table with 8x4 feet dimension, designed to accommodate 4 employees was one of the early furniture designing projects i was involved in. The design had to include 4 individual drawers for the 4 professionals and an extra wide drawer at one of the short end to store big sheets of drawings. It also included storage for stationaries in the middle, and a slot to pull wires from the power points under the table. With sleek and minimal aesthetics, this table was made out of ply wood which was then coated with black lacquer and finished.
